Taurasi scores 26, helps US reach World Cup gold-medal game

By Doug Feinberg, Associated Press SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA LAGUNA, Spain (AP) — Just as it has done for most of the tournament, the U.S. used a big third quarter keyed by Diana Taurarsi and Breanna Stewart to pull away from an opponent. This time, it was Belgium, whose one-point halftime deficit turned into 16 by the end of the third period. Taurasi finished with 26 points, including hitting five 3-pointers, to help the U.S. win 93-77 on Saturday in the semifinals of the FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. "We got some stops, they are a really good team. They've been playing together for a long time, you can tell," Taurasi said of the third quarter in which the U.S. outscored Belgium 33-18. "We got a couple more stops, we made a couple more plays on offense, wore them down a little bit." Breanna Stewart added 20 points while Brittney Griner had 16 for the Americans, who will be going for a third straight gold medal at the worlds — something the country has never done. "That's what we're here for," said Elena Delle Donne, who is on her first World Cup team. The U.S. has won 21 consecutive World Cup games and will play Australia for the title Sunday. The U.S. has won all 17 meetings between the teams, including a 10-0 mark in the World Cup. Belgium, making its first appearance in the World Cup, was led by Emma Meesseman's 23 points. The Belgians already had surpassed their goal of reaching the quarterfinals. A bronze medal would be an excellent achievement. "I don't know who is going to play us," Meesseman said. "I know we're going to give all we have left." Belgium hung around for 25 minutes thanks to Meesseman and solid outside shooting. The score was 52-52 midway through the third quarter before the U.S. closed the period with a 21-5 run. Griner, Stewart and Jewell Loyd keyed the spurt. Belgium came no closer than 14 the rest of the way. Meesseman got her team going early, scoring 13 points in the opening quarter as Belgium shot 56 percent to lead 26-21 after one quarter. The U.S. rallied behind Taurasi and Elena Delle Donne, who had seven points in the second quarter to give the Americans a 40-39 halftime lead. HELPER MARK: Sue Bird is now one assist shy of matching Dawn Staley's career mark of 103 for USA Basketball at the World Cup. She had seven against Belgium to match her best-ever in the Worlds. Staley, when hearing that Bird was one assist away, joked that "she's not playing." Bird was honored to have a shot at her coach's mark. "I think anytime you can break a record, it's one of those things later, when it's all said and done, you have a true appreciation. This one is a little different when it is someone like Dawn who's holding it." MILESTONE REACHED: The U.S. scored the 10,000th point in its World Cup history on the first basket of the game by Griner. No other team is close. "If I ever go on jeopardy they will say Brittney Griner scored the 10,000th point," she said laughing. "That's awesome. That's a lot of scoring for the USA. TIP-INS: Taurasi was two points short of matching her World Cup high of 28 set against Brazil in 2006. SKIPPING THE WNBA SEASON: Meesseman decided to train with the Belgium team all year instead of playing for the Washington Mystics in the WNBA this past season. She didn't second-guess her decision when the Mystics made the WNBA Finals for the first time. She was thrilled for her teammates — Delle Donne among them — but was happy with her choice to train. SCOREBOARD: Australia beat Spain 72-66; China topped Canada 62-58 and will meet France for fifth place. France beat Nigeria 84-62. Nigeria and Canada will play for seventh. UP NEXT: Belgium: Bronze-medal game against Spain. U.S.: Gold-medal game against Australia......»»

Liz Cambage emotional after win over Spain

By Doug Feinberg, Associated Press SAN CRISTOBAL DE LA LAGUNA, Spain (AP) — Liz Cambage teared up as the final seconds ran off the clock and Australia was set to advance to the gold medal game of the Women's Basketball World Cup for the first time since 2006. Getting this far, she finally feels validated. "This is the furthest I've been at this level. I've never played a gold medal game at this level," Cambage said choking up. "I've also carried a little bit of a weight on my shoulders for eight years. My first world, we didn't even medal. It was the worst the Opals had done. The next Olympics we got bronze, the girls had never done it before. I felt I was bad luck for the Australia team. It's not a nice feeling. This is the furthest I've been at this level. I'm proud of myself and proud of these girls." Cambage was the biggest reason why they've reached the gold medal game. She had 33 points and 15 rebounds to lead Australia to a 72-66 win over Spain on Saturday. Trailing 58-50 to start the fourth quarter, Australia scored the first nine points of the period, including six by Cambage to take a 59-58 lead. The teams went back and forth over the next few minutes. Spain led 64-61 with 4:01 left before Cambage converted a three-point play to tie the game. That started an 11-2 run to close the game. As the clock wound down, Australia was celebrating. Australia will play the U.S. trying to win its second gold medal ever. The Opals won the gold in 2006 — the last time the Americans didn't win. "What we're chasing, you dream of as little girls," Cambage said. "I watched Penny Taylor and Lauren Jackson win that medal (in 2006). It's been a battle for all these years. We have such a strong group. Anyone can win on any given day." It will take a tremendous effort by the Australians to knock off the U.S. Australia is 0-17 against the U.S. in the World Cup and Olympics, including going 0-10 in the worlds. "It is a big challenge, one we're looking forward to," Australia coach Sandy Brondello said. "I believe in this team. One game, anyone can beat anyone. We have to play at our best. We need all 12 players playing at our best. USA is the favorites and we'll give it our best shot, hopefully that's good enough." The Australians will need another huge game from Cambage, who is the leading scorer in the tournament. She might not have the Spanish crowd to fire her up in the gold medal game. The 6-foot-8 center was enemy No. 1 of the Spanish fans in their semifinal on Saturday night — a role she relished. After getting a foul in the first half, she cupped her hand to her ear to get them to jeer louder. When she blocked a shot in the fourth quarter, Cambage pounded her chest to the fans on the baseline which drew an unsportsmanlike foul call from the officials. "I got to do my thing. I got to play the bad guy tonight," Cambage said smiling. "I always said Kanye's line 'scream from the haters' has a nice ring to it. I loved being booed I don't know if I need to see a psychologist about that. Having the crowd against me is something that has always picked me up. I don't know what it is. I've been getting it since I was a kid.".....»»

ASIAN GAMES: PHI boxers take center stage Friday

JAKARTA --- Nesthy Petecio takes on a vaunted Chinese she beat earlier this year and Joel Bacho fights an Iranian with a milder resume as the Philippines opens its campaign in boxing in the 18th Asian Games on Friday at the Jakarta International Expo Hall. Petecio, the 26-year-old Davao City pride who has practically fought in every major international competition in the last five years, faces China’s Yin Jun Hua in the preliminaries of the women’s bantamweight (57 kgs division). Who is Yin? Read this: Silver medalist in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, bronze medalist in the Jeju 2014 world championships, gold medalist in the 2017 Ho Chi Min Asian championships and gold medalist—but in the 60 kgs class—in the Incheon 2014 Asian Games. Petecio? She bagged silver in the Jeju worlds, also silver in the 2015 Ulanqab (China) Asian championships and was a consistent silver medalist in the Southeast Asian Games from 2013 to 2017. But one good thing going for Petecio is she beat Yin in the semifinals of the Korotkov Memorial Cup in Russia last May. It was Petecio’s first win in five meetings over the Chinese as she went on to win the gold. “This is like a gold medal fight,” said Philippine team coach Nolito “Boy” Velasco of the Petecio-Yin fight. Bacho, 25, meanwhile, takes on Iran’s Sajjad Kazemzadeh in a men’s welterweight duel. Bacho, an Asian Championships campaigner from Babatngon in Leyte, is expected to work a little harder against the Iranian, a bronze medal winner in last year’s Tashkent Asian Championships. The other Filipino boxers drew opening day byes—lightweight James Palicte, flyweight Olympian Rogen Ladon, light flyweight Carlo Paalam and middleweight Eumir Felix Marcial in the men’s division and flyweight Irish Magno in the women’s contest......»»

Batang Gilas falls short of bronze, still bound for FIBA Worlds

Batang Gilas has bowed out of the 2018 FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship with two loses in a row. Just a day after getting eliminated from contention by Australia, the Filipinos again faltered in the battle for third on Saturday, this time in the face of a more determined China side, 76-57, at the Stadium 29 in Thailand. Both Kai Sotto and AJ Edu had bounced back games individually, with the former finishing with 16 points, eight rebounds, and one block and the latter ending with 14 markers, eight boards, and one rejection. However, they were the only two players who proved to be effective for the Philippines, as all of Dave Ildefonso, Migs Oczon, and Dalph Panopio only combined for 21 points in 9-of-30 shooting. Four day ago, Batang Gilas dominated the same Chinese side by a score of 73-63 to top their group in the preliminary round. After that, however, they were at the wrong end of routs by Australia in the semifinals and then China in the battle for third. Even with back-to-back losses the tournament, the Filipinos have already booked a ticket to the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup by virtue of reching the semifinals. In doing so, they downed Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, China, and Bahrain along the way. BOX SCORES CHINA 76 – Wang QZ 27, Xu 18, Li 9, Guo 8, Jiang HR 7, Wang YZ 7, Chen 0, Shi 0.
