PBA: Lee after winning Manila Clasico: 'Di pa rin kami champion'

Magnolia finally won Manila Clasico. The Hotshots took down two-time Brgy. Ginebra in the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup semfinals, completing a 3-1 series win Friday. While that's great and all, Magnolia has only accomplished half of its goal. The Hotshots want a championship and they need four more wins. Eliminating the defending two-time champions won't mean much if they don't take the title for themselves. "We beat the defending champion pero di pa rin kami champion," guard Paul Lee said. "Kailangan namin talunin pa rin kung sino mananalo sa kabila," he added. Alaska currently leads Meralco in the other semfinals series, 2-1. The Hotshots will start the Finals against either of the two teams on December 5 at the MOA Arena. "Job ain't finished pa rin," Lee said. "Malaki chance naman pero chance lang yun eh. Hindi ka naman mananalo ng championship ng basta-basta. Laging sinasabi ni kuya Pin [Marc Pingris] na kung gusto niyo manalo ng championship, kunin niyo," he added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Romeo Travis wants redemption in return to Finals

The first time Romeo Travis came to the PBA, he won Best Import and took his team to the Governors' Cup Finals. Once he got there though, he got swept.  It wa a terrible way to end his maiden voyage to the Philipppines. It took Travis three years to make it back to the PBA and while he might not win Best Import this time, he still has his team in the Finals of the Governors' Cup. He wants to win it this time. "Last time I was here I laid an eg,, I played very bad in the Finals," Travis said after scoring a career-high 50 points for Magnolia in Game 4 to lead the Hotshots past two-time champion Brgy. Ginebra in the semifinals of the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup. "I want redemption, that's why I came back," he added. The last time Romeo Travis was in the PBA Finals, he was with the Alaska Aces. Three years later, he's with the Hotshots. He's pretty good with his new team. "I looked at the roster and I seen they had good veterans and hungry young guys. It was a great mix. With me it was just an opportunity to gel with the team. I didn't want to take over, I just wanted to be part of the team," Travis said. "These guys have allowed me to be part of the team and that's what makes this team special, it's the chemistry. They know I'm not a guy that's going to demand the ball and curse at somebody if I don't get the ball. That's not who am I as a person and as a player. We're one unit right now, we're really clicking," he added. The Aces that Travis used to play with are one win away from the Finals as well and are on the verge of setting up a pretty interesting championship round. While Travis wishes his old teammates good luck, he couldn't care less if it's Alaska that moves on or if it's Meralco. "Whoever wins, we're happy to see them. Good luck to both teams," he said. "I don't have a preference. Good luck to Banchero, Vic Manuel... these are my guys. I hope they do well but I don't care who wins. Either way we're going to have to play them," Travis added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Petron, Generika-Ayala dominate rivals

Petron and Generika-Ayala kept their hot streaks going as they crushed their respective foes in the 2018 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference Saturday at the Caloocan Sports Complex. The Blaze Spikers dominated Cignal HD, 25-22, 25-16, 25-19, while the Lifesavers clobbered Smart, 25-19, 25-12, 25-15. Earlier, Milena Alessandrini scored 24 points while Eya Laure chipped in 19 markers as University of Santo Tomas edged Far Eastern University, 25-16, 13-25, 25-17, 25-15, in the Collegiate Grand Slam. Still, the day belonged to the Lifesavers. Patty Orendain delivered 18 points, 13 digs and 10 excellent receptions as Generika-Ayala captured its third straight win to climb the team standings with a 3-3 win-loss card. Libero Kath Arado said they know Smart is such a veteran and very disciplined team so defeating it in straight set is quite impossible, especially in this tough tourney. “To be honest, we didn’t expect to win in straight sets. We know that Smart is such a strong team with an intact core,” said Arado, the University of the East star who has been consistently manning to floor for the Lifesavers. “But we just did our best and we executed everything we did in practice. Those were the keys that led to this victory.” After barging into the win column via convincing wins over erstwhile leader F2 Logistics and Sta. Lucia, the Lifesavers marched to the warpath oozing with confidence. But after racing to a 16-9 lead in the third set, Aiko Urdas sparked a mini-rally to allow the Giga Hitters to move closer, 12-20, until Orendain restored order and towed the Lifesavers to match point. Skipper Angeli Araneta chipped in eight markers while Ria Meneses had seven points for Generika-Ayala, which displayed tremendous improvement under the mentorship of former Ateneo coach Sherwin Meneses. Grethcel Soltones tallied six points for Smart, which slid to 2-3......»»
