UAAP Season 81: DLSU, Ateneo in early clash of titans

Three-time defending champion De La Salle University takes on archrival Ateneo de Manila University in an early clash of titans on Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena. The four-peat-seeking Lady Spikers gets their first acid test at 4:00 p.m. in the duel that will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, iWant and via livestream. “Sabi nga nila na sa proverbial statement na ‘go to the ring of fire.’ Sabi nga ni coach (Ramil De Jesus) whoever we play in the first game ready kami,” said Tin Tiamzon, one of the remaining veterans left to lead DLSU. The Lady Spikers won their third grand slam in the past 20 years at the expense of Far Eastern University last year in the final eligibility year of Kim Kianna Dy, former Most Valuable Player Majoy Baron and libero Dawn Macandili. DLSU also lost two more veterans during the offseason after Gyra Barroga and Arianne Layug decided to move up to the semi-pro league. De Jesus will now lean on his remaining grizzled soldiers in Tiamzon, Des Cheng, Aduke Ogunsanya and May Luna. The Taft-based squad will parade transferee Lourdes Clemente and rookie Jolina Dela Cruz. Meanwhile, Ateneo will begin its post-coach Tai Bundit era under new mentor former Blue Eagles tactician Oliver Almadro. “Siyempre may halong pressure, may halong excitement, may accepting the blessing. Pero siyempre di natin matatawaran na La Salle kaagad. Ang masasabi ko lang ay my team is on track sa conditioning and sa program namin,” said Almadro, who was once an assistant coach of De Jesus at DLSU back in 2007. “But of course we’re looking at it na ang first game mo ay bakbakan agad.” Leading the charge of Ateneo are graduating players Bea De Leon and Maddie Madayag, Kat Tolentino, Ponggay Gaston and last year’s Best Setter winner Deanna Wong with promising rookie Vanessa Gandler.     ---      Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles   .....»»

Opening game loss not dampening UE Lady Warriors’ confidence

MANILA, Philippines---A defeat in the opening game of the UAAP Season 81 women's volleyball tournament isn't enough to dampen University of the East's confidence. Captain Kath Arado said the Lady Warriors' five-set loss to University of the Philippines, 25-12, 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12, Saturday at Filoil Flying V Center is just a cross mark in their schedule. UAAP Season 81: Dapat ‘wag makuntento ang team -- Diaz

Far Eastern University built huge momentum after crushing defending champion National University in straight sets to open the UAAP Season 81 men’s volleyball tournament. It took the Tamaraws a quick 70-minute workout to dispose the still adjusting Bulldogs, 25-12, 25-18, 25-17, Saturday at the FilOil Flying V Centre, but head coach Rey Diaz warned his wards that the season’s just starting.     “Maganda siyang simula kasi we defeated NU. Alam natin nagbigay sila ng titulo para sa Pilipinas. Pero dapat bantayan kasi mahirap na kalaban sa isang team ay ‘yung overconfidence,” said Diaz after their win over the 2018 ASEAN University Games gold medalists. “‘Dapat ‘wag makuntento ang team. ‘Yun lang ang gagawin ko, na paaalalahanan na wag maging kuntento ang team kasi ang season nagsisimula pa lang. Alam naman natin ang UAAP habang tumatagal mas sumasaya,” Diaz added. FEU played a very disciplined game, picking high percentage attacks behind Owen Suarez’s heady plays and limiting the number of errors committed to only nine compared to NU’s atrocious 32 miscues.   The Tams took advantage of the Bulldogs’ struggles in adjusting to rookie setter Joshua Retamar, who took the starting position after veteran playmaker Kim Dayandante was deemed ineligible for his final season. Skipper Richard Solis and the rest of his FEU crew know that they still have a long way to go in their journey.    “Sa amin, natalo namin ang champion pero ‘wag magre-relax kasi sabi ni coach mahaba pa ang tatahakin, may mga struggle pa kaming haharapin,” said Solis, who had nine points. “Always mag-ensayo ng mabuti para sa mga sususunod pang makakalaban.” FEU will take on University of the Philippines, which suffered a four-set upset loss to University of the East, on Wednesday.   ---     Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles    .....»»

UAAP Season 81: Naga-adjust pa lang kami -- Bagunas

National University top hitter Bryan Bagunas admitted that the Bulldogs are still adjusting with the absence of starting setter Kim Dayandante.    The Bulldogs’ struggles were just too obvious after suffering a shocking 12-25, 18-25, 17-25, loss at the hands of Far Eastern University Saturday in the UAAP Season 81 men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOiul Flying V Centre in San Juan. Bagunas was the only NU player in double digits with 15 points on a 14-of-37 spiking clip.     “Siguro sa ngayon naga-adjust pa lang kami kasi late na nasabi na di makakapaglaro si Kim eh. Mga three days before this game saka sinabi na di makakapaglaro si Kim so nandun ang adjustment namin ngayon,” said Bagunas. Dayandante was dropped from the roster after the eligibility screening. Rookie Joshua Retamar got a baptism of fire as starter, tallying 18 excellent sets in 82 attempts. “Sa set play naga-adjust pa kami kasi sa mga laro namin sa labas ang ginagamit namin si Kim Dayandante nga so wala pa yung jell namin sa (bagong) setter namin,” Bagunas added. Another problem that plagued the ASEAN University Games gold medalists is the number of errors they committed. NU threw 32 points off their miscues. “Isa pa rin ‘yun ang errors na ‘di namin na-control na naman. Nandoon na naman ‘yung sakit namin bumabalik,” Bagunas said. “Siguro kailangan pa naming ma-maintan ‘yung dati na nali-lessen namin ang error namin.” Still, the Bulldogs remained positive despite the loss. “Sabi naman nila coach Dante (Alinsunurin) start pa lang ito hanggang May pa ito,” said Bagunas. “’Di pa rito natatapos ang season so umpisahan uli namin sa training. Talagang pupukpukin na namin ang jell namin para sa next game.” NU will face University of the East next week.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

UAAP Season 81: Lady Maroons survive opening day scare

University of the Philippines weathered University of the East’s upset scare with a hard-earned, 25-12, 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12, opening day win Saturday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.   The veteran duo of Isa Molde and Tots Carlos delivered the goods for the Lady Maroons, who are considered as one of the top contenders after winning two pre-season titles, in the fifth set to silence the feisty Lady Warriors.   "They are very good five sets. We played as a team that is why we we're able to get the last two sets. As I said before nothing comes easy. We win but we struggle some times," said UP head coach Godfrey Okumu. "The sets we won we won with ease but the ones we lost, we lost terribly. I hope we put this behind us and move forward to our next game."     Molde posted 23 points off 19 kills, two aces and two kill blocks to pace the Dilima-based squad. The Season 78 rookie of the year added 10 excellent receptions for the Lady Maroons.  Carlos chipped in 17 markers icluding 15 off spikes while Justine Dorog added 12 points for UP, which landed 61 spikes behind setter Ayel Estranero's 44 excellent sets. The Lady Maroons recovered from a 1-2 match deficit to force a deciding frame but found the Lady Warriors a tough nut to crack. UP went up 13-9 before  UE answered with straight points. Dorog put the Lady Maroons at match point , Judith Abil saved a point for the Lady Warriors before Jessma Ramos sealed the win for UP with a strong swipe off UE's block.        The Lady Maroons survived a scare in the fourth set, staving off the Lady Warriors’ charge from a nine-point deficit, 1-10. UE chopped its deficit to 14-16 behind Judith Abil and Me-Anne Mendrez’s heroics but UP answered with a scorching rally to force a deciding frame.       Judith Abil led the Lady Warriors’ fightback in the third set after trailing, 13-19. The graduating hitter Abil tied the frame at 21. Both squads traded points in the next plays before Mariella Gabarda pushed UE at set point. The Lady Warriors stole the frame after Marist Layug’s soft shot went out.     Abil got 20 points and 21 excellent receptions while Mendrez had eight markers for UE. Prized libero Kath Arado tallied 32 digs and 18 receives in a lost cause.    --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles  .....»»

UAAP 81: Different UE team gives favored UP worthy challenge

Yep, this is a different UE Lady Warriors team. As if it wasn’t obvious enough, the Lady Warriors made sure to remind everyone that they’re no longer pushovers, pushing preseason favorite UP to five full sets Saturday at the San Juan Arena to open the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament. Not only did UE push the Lady Maroons to the limit, the Lady Warriors also actually led the game two sets to one. UE’s breakthough win wouldn’t come Saturday though as the Lady Maroons, winners of two preseason champions and were clearly the favorites entering the game, narrowly escaped an upset in five. “Malaking bagay samin yun [five sets], nakaka-taba ng puso,” libero Kat Arado said. “Kasi yun nga, marami ako nakikita sa social media na straight sets kami, never ko nakita na lalaban ang UE. So malaking bagay to. Sayang man but at the same time, confident pa rin kami,” she added. After going through seasons of winless campaigns, the Lady Warriors have come out as a veteran, mature group. However, execution late in sets remain a weak spot for UE and the Lady Warriors are aware that that’s something they need to polish moving forward. “Kinapos talaga kami sa dulo,” Arado said. “Labanan ng maturity talaga, nandoon na yung maturity namin kasi nagku-kulang kami na kumbaga sa UP, ang smooth ng galaw nila. Yun yung trabahuhin namin, yung buo talaga [late in games],” she added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

UAAP Season 81: They’re not an easy team -- Okumu on UE

University of the Philippines head coach Godfrey Okumu was not surprised when it took his wards five grueling sets to shoot down the pesky University of the East. The mentor, actually, expected that kind of tough match. “No, we’ve always struggled with UE,” said Okumu after the Lady Maroons’ 25-12, 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12, escape over the Lady Warriors Saturday to open their campaign in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre. The sophomore coach recalled the same struggle they had against UE during their pre-season meeting in the Philippine Superliga Collegiate Grand Slam.     “I remember last season I was sitting here the same way we won against them. When we played in the PSL we won 3-1 but it was all struggle,” he said. UP needed to come back from a 1-2 match deficit before hanging tough in the tight fifth set behind the veteran trio of Isa Molde, Tots Carlos and Justine Dorog.   “Siyempre naga-adjust din sila sa amin. And lumakas din naman sila compared last season,” said Molde, who had 23 points with 19 coming off kills. “Lalaban at lalaban din naman sila kasi may iba sa kanila na ga-graduate na eh.” Okumu also stressed that UE’s best asset is its floor defense and the presence of graduating libero Kath Arado. The defense specialist scattered 32 digs and had 18 receptions. Me-Anne Mendrez got 18 digs while Judith Abil posted 21 receives. “They have a good libero, she’s doing a good job. We have to accept that it’s very hard to play against a very strong defense,” he said. “We have to think on how we will execute in spiking. They played well and they are a very good team. They’re not an easy team.” UP hitter Tots Carlos shared the same sentiment. “Iba kasi talaga kapag mayroon kang first ball eh. Sobrang galing ni Kath kaya medyo nahirapan kami kaya medyo nag-lay low din kami sa defense namin so nahirapan kami lalo na laging nagi-struggle ang setter kaya nahihirapan din siyang mag-distribute,” she said. Okumu also rued UP’s atrocious number of errors. The Lady Maroons threw away 42 points off their miscues. “The sets we won we’re very, very up to standard but the sets we lost we gave away balls easily, and we have many unforced errors that we should correct. That’s what we talked about the unforced errors,” he said. “I think in the fifth set the opponent had one unforced error and we have around five or six,” Okumu added. “You can see the difference there and we need to work on that.”     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Veteran hitter Tots Carlos and the rest of the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons are determined to prove that their twin titles in the pre-season are no fluke. UP will try to translate its success in the Premier Volleyball League and Philippine Superliga into a good showing if not a championship in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament.  “Two championships hindi naman ibinigay yun na free lang, pinagtrabahuhan namin yun. Sabi nila coach yung championships namin motivation but at the same time pressure,” said Carlos, one of the Lady Maroons’ veterans who is expected to deliver the goods for the Godfrey Okumu-mentored squad. “Kailangan naming panindigan ang mga championships na ‘yun and mag-perform ng maayos this UAAP. Siyempre di kami makakapag-perform kung di kami magtatrabaho.” The Lady Maroons are coming into the season brimming with confidence after their Premier Volleyball League Collegiate Conference and Philippine Superliga Collegiate Grand Slam conquests. UP crushed Far Eastern University in the PVL Finals highlighted by an amazing fifth set comeback while University of Sto. Tomas became the victim of the Lady Maroons in the PSL championship. Those twin crowns were UP’s first major titles after ruling the UAAP 36 years ago.  The Diliman-based squad is also parading an intact core with fourth-year veteran Carlos, who skipped the PVL to recover from a foot injury, Isa Molde and graduating setter Ayel Estranero leading the charge. And for the first time in years, UP is considered as one of the legitimate contenders to challenge the reign of four-peat-seeking De La Salle University.   “Kailangan naming maging confident pero at the same time kasi lahat ng teams pantay-pantay talaga. ‘Di mo alam kung ano ang laro nila eh especially La Salle kasi wala akong nakita nilang laro before the season,” said Carlos. “Sabi nga namin ‘di kami puwedeng pumunta ng season na hindi kami handa. Lalaruin namin ang laro namin and middle of the game mag-adjust kami kung sino man ang opponent namin.” With the showing they made in the pre-season, Carlos admits that it gave their opponents a glimpse of their game, play patterns and strategy.  “Siyempre may fear din pero at the same time sabi ni coach, kasi skills pantay-pantay naman lahat ng mga teams eh pero more on mental and emotional kailangan. ‘Yun ang labanan na lang dito.” Mental toughness, according to her, is one of the most important things that they learned during the pre-season. “I think oo (nakuha ang mental toughness sa pre-season). Kasi winning the championship hindi naman yun madali lang like straight three sets lang eh. Very crucial. Doon ko nakita na sobrang taas ng confidence ng team at ‘yung gusto talaga nila ang game eh,” she said.       --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Far Eastern University head coach George Pascua has one mission order for Celine Domingo for UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament. “(Dapat) gampanan ko ang pagiging Best Middle Blocker ko last season and consistency sa game ko,” said Domingo. The middle blocker will have much responsibility in her hands after the exit of top hitter Bernadeth Pons last year and with veteran opposite hitter Chin-Chin Basas sidelined with a shoulder injury. Domingo averaged 11.14 points per game last year and helped the Season 80 runner-up Lady Tamaraws advance to the Finals for the first time after a decade. She was FEU’s third best scorer in the previous edition behind Pons (15.3 points per game) and Basas (11.7 points per game) Domingo normed 0.73 kill blocks per set to bag the individual award.  Marching into a new war and without the top two scoring options last year, Domingo will have to up the ante in her game to lead the charge of the Lady Tams.     “Dagdag pressure kasi nabawasan ng beterano na maasahan sa loob ng court,” Domingo admitted. Domingo will have returning seasoned players Jerrili Malabanan, Heather Guino-o, Jeanette Villareal, setter Kyle Negrito and libero Buding Duremdes to back her up in FEU’s quest to bring the title back to Morayta. “Hindi kami nagi-expect ng sobra. Parang ang mindset namin ay one game at a time,” said Domingo. “’Di kami nagi-expect pero siyempre gusto naming makabalik ulit ng Finals.”   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
