Vardy fires Leicester to 2nd in EPL, Chelsea extends run

By James Ellingworth, Associated Press Could Leicester do it again? Even if another shock Premier League title isn't on the cards, the outsider which won in 2016 is firmly a part of English soccer's top four this season. Beating Arsenal 2-0 on Saturday leaves Leicester second, five points off leader Liverpool, and with a nine-point cushion to the fifth spot. It also deepens the gloom at Arsenal, where Unai Emery is dealing with a five-game winless run as well as the now former captain Granit Xhaka's rift with fans. Chelsea is third, level on points with Leicester, after winning its sixth league game in a row — a 2-0 victory against Crystal Palace. Tottenham drew 1-1 with Sheffield United in a game full of video-review controversy and hasn't won consecutive games since April. Liverpool and fourth-place Manchester City play Sunday. VARDY'S PARTY Jamie Vardy remains the Premier League's top scorer after another dominant game against Arsenal. Vardy opened the scoring in the 68th minute with his 11th league goal of the season off a square ball from Youri Tielemans, finishing off a slick team move. Vardy set up the second for James Maddison in the 75th, holding up the ball in the penalty area before feeding it for the onrushing Maddison to hit a powerful low shot from outside the penalty area. Arsenal had chances to score in the first half, with Alexandre Lacazette in particular wasting good opportunities. After scoring two, Leicester came close to a third. Arsenal sits sixth and is dropping away from the race for Champions League spots. Xhaka was out of the squad again for the Leicester game as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang remained captain. PULISIC SCORES Abraham has been on strong scoring form all season, and now American midfielder Christian Pulisic has joined him. After Palace kept the game goalless in the first half with solid defending and more than a little luck, Chelsea did its job in the second to win 2-0. Abraham scored his 10th Premier League goal of the season in the 52nd off a neat backheel pass from Willian, and Pulisic made sure of the win in the 79th, heading in a looping, deflected shot from Michy Batshuayi. Pulisic scored his fifth goal in three league games "In the first half we started well, then allowed our tempo to drop, but when we came out in the second half with the intent that we did, we won the game relatively comfortably - a nice, solid win with a clean sheet," Chelsea manager Frank Lampard said. Man City is the next opponent for Lampard's Chelsea on Nov. 23. SON BOUNCES BACK Son Heung-min scored for Spurs, but he wasn't originally meant to be playing at all. Son was due to be suspended after a red card in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Everton for a challenge which led to Andre Gomes suffering a broken and dislocated ankle. Son left the field in tears after that incident, but his red card was overturned a day later on appeal. He followed up by scoring twice in the 4-0 win over Red Star. Sheffield was frustrated when John Lundstram hit the post and the video assistant referee ruled out a goal for David McGoldrick because of an offside in the build-up. VAR was kinder to Sheffield when George Baldock's cross ended up in the net at the far post in the 78th. A video review found Chris Basham hadn't been offside as the ball flew past his head. Spurs' inconsistent form is one reason for the pressure on manager Mauricio Pochettino, but the league table is damning for last season's Champions League finalist. Tottenham is 17 points off leader Liverpool, but just seven ahead of last-place Norwich. SAINTS IN TROUBLE Everton traveled to struggling Southampton on the verge of the relegation zone but eased the pressure with a 2-1 win. Everton now enjoys a six-point cushion over 18th-place Watford, while Southampton is 19th and winless in its last seven league games. Newcastle beat Bournemouth 2-1, while Burnley turned around a run of three defeats with a 3-0 win at home to West Ham......»»

Germany, Netherlands win as Croatia drops points

By James Ellingworth, Associated Press Germany flirted with defeat for a second straight European Championship qualifier before Marcel Halstenberg's first international goal lifted the team to a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland on Monday. Coming off a 4-2 loss to the Netherlands, Germany's recovery was unconvincing, helped by Northern Ireland wasting good chances. The Dutch delivered another impressive attacking display as Memphis Depay marked his 50th game for the Netherlands by scoring one goal and setting up two more in a 4-0 win over Estonia. Belgium made qualifying seem a pushover by beating Scotland 4-0 to keep a perfect winning record, but other favorites faltered. Croatia and Poland both dropped points but remained top of their increasingly competitive groups. REBUILD CONTINUES Germany's still in rebuild mode. More than a year on from its embarrassing group-stage elimination at the World Cup, Joachim Löw's team still struggles to get what should be routine wins. Just as South Korea ran Germany into the ground at the World Cup, so hard pressing from Northern Ireland nearly earned an upset win in Belfast. The host had the better of the first half. Conor Washington had one good shot saved by Manuel Neuer, and later tripped over the ball in front of goal, missing the best chance of the game. Germany emerged from the break refreshed and needed just three minutes before Halstenberg volleyed the ball into the net after Julian Brandt flicked on a cross. Stuart Dallas then went close for Nothern Ireland, who continued to challenge until deep into stoppage time, when Serge Gnabry grabbed Germany's second goal on a counter. "They pressed us hard in the first half, but at some point they got tired," Halstenberg said. Asked if Germany was getting back to the level of Europe's best, he was diplomatic. "It's hard to say." Ryan Babel was crucial in the Netherlands' come-from-behind win over Germany on Friday and he tore up another defense on Monday, scoring twice against Estonia. It was the first time Babel scored two in an international game and left the Dutch third in Group B, though they've played one game fewer than everyone else. The Netherlands' home-and-away games against Northern Ireland next month and in November will likely decide the automatic qualifying places in Group C. CROATIA CHECKED World Cup finalist Croatia was held by outsider Azerbaijan to 1-1 on Monday, denting its chances of reaching next year's European Championship. Croatia won an early penalty for handball, converted by captain Luka Modric, but Azerbaijan wing back Tamkin Khalilzade cut in from the left in the 72nd minute and beat Dejan Lovren before shooting past goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic. For Azerbaijan, a Euro 2020 host, it was the first point of the qualifying campaign after four straight defeats. Croatia leads Group E by a single point from Slovakia and Hungary with two qualifying spots available. Slovakia beat Hungary 2-1 to move up to second. The other team in the hunt for qualification, Wales, was playing a friendly. BELGIUM TAKES IT EASY Scotland's Hampden Park was a walk in the park for Belgium. The visitors were three goals up after just 32 minutes as they kept a perfect record of six wins from six in qualifying. With an 11-point cushion to third-placed Kazakhstan, Belgium could seal qualification in its next game against San Marino. Belgium's goal difference of +18 is the best of any team in the qualifying competition and its gone five competitive games without conceding. Russia kept second place in Group I, but was lackluster in beating Kazakhstan 1-0, needing an 89th-minute headed goal from right back Mario Fernandes. Cyprus beat San Marino 4-0. After a fourth defeat, Scotland was in fifth place. It has never finished a European Championship qualifying campaign below fourth. POLAND SCORELESS AGAIN Poland looked a dead cert to qualify until last week, and now that seems a long time ago. After four straight wins, a 2-0 loss to Slovenia on Friday rattled the Poles. A 0-0 draw with Austria on Monday left Poland with its lead cut to two points. Slovenia earned a second big win in four days, beating Israel 3-2 to snatch second place in Group G. The competition's top scorer, Eran Zahavi, netted his ninth goal in qualifying as Israel turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead, but Roman Bezjak drew Slovenia level before winger Benjamin Verdic scored the winner. Fourth-placed North Macedonia kept long-shot qualifying hopes alive by beating Latvia 2-0......»»

POC president Vargas removes board members

Philippine Olympic Committee Ricky Vargas sacked members of the board during a heated general assembly on Monday. Vargas gave membership committee head Robert Bachmann, board members Joey Romasanta, Peping Cojuangco, chef de mission Monsour Del Rosario and deputy CDM Charlie Ho the boot from their respective positions saying that ‘the individuals I mentioned have lost my trust and confidence.’ He stripped Bachmann of his position as membership committee chair and was replaced by General Lucas Managuelod. Vargas withdrew the chairmanship of Cojuangco in the constitutional amendments committee and assumed the position. Del Rosario and Ho were forced to vacate their positions and will be replaced within the few days, Romasanta was bumped off his spot as CDM to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with Vargas nominating POC chairman Bambol Tolentino as his replacement.                Vargas’ decision came after the group held unauthorized meetings last April 30 and last Saturday.   Vargas said that he did not approve of these meetings but the group went ahead anyway even without his, Tolentino and Secretary-General Patrick Gregorio’s presence. The letter that resulted out of the April 30 meeting was signed by board member Clint Aranas, who Vargas said ‘never attended a single board meeting or general assembly in recent memory’, International Olympic Committee representative to the PHI Mikee Cojuangco-Jaworski and members of the board namely former POC president Cojuangco, 1st vice-president Romasanta, 2nd vice-president Jeff Tamayo, treasurer Julian Camacho and auditor Jonne Go. “I am puzzled by the inclusion of Ms. Jaworski. I will send a query to the IOC about their representative meddling in the internal affairs of our organization. My understanding is, she is part of the POC board to protect the interest of the IOC and the Olympic Programme. Not to interfere in internal conflict,” said Vargas in his statement. Vargas called the letter of the meetings as ‘offensive, insulting, vilifying and demeaning’ as it pointed several questions about him with a stern 5-day deadline to reply ‘like a reprimanded subordinate or a recalcitrant child.’    “But this was too much. It was too offensive for me to honor so I kept my peace and let the deadline pass as I prepared to take my case to you here in this General Assembly,” said Vargas. The president swiped at the group saying, ‘This group sees me as an interloper, an outsider. I am not one of them. I am unwelcome.’ Before adjourning the meeting, Vargas in his statement dropped the hammer on the group......»»
