SEA Games: Team PHI hauls 23 gold medals in Day 1

Team Philippines tied its total gold medal output two years ago with a deluge of mints in Day 1 of the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Sunday. The host bets burned the dance floor with 10 gold medals in dancesport while Rambo Chicano opened the flood gates as he drew first blood for the host nation. A total of 23 gold medals went to the coffers of the Philippines as it duplicated the country’s total output in Kuala Lumpur two years ago. The PHI actually won 24 gold in 2017 but was stripped of its lone gold in equestrian after Colin Syquia was disqualified after his horse Adventure E tested positive of banned a substance.   Chicano made up for the absence of two-time gold medalist Nikko Huelgas, who came up short for qualifying in the competition, as he crossed the finish line with a clocking of 1:53:26 at the Subic Bay Boardwalk to deliver the Philippines its first gold medal. But it was the dancesport team that took the spotlight as the Filipino dancers strutted their way to 10 mints at the Royce Hotel in Clark. Only four gold medals out of the 14 mints at stake slipped from the hands of the home team. Partners Wilbert Aunzo and Pearl Marie Caneda collected gold medals in single dance samba, single dance chacha and single dance rumba. Michael Angelo Marquez and Stephanie Sabalo won golds in pasodoble, jive and all five dances so while the tandem of Sean Aranar and Ana Nualla won in tango and Viennese Waltz while the pair of Mark Gayon and Mary Joy Renigen ruled the waltz and foxtrot. At the Angeles University Foundation in Pampanga, arnis accounted for five gold from Jezebel Morcillo in women’s bantamweight, Dexter Bolambao in men’s bantamweight, Villardo Cunamay in men’s lightweight, Nino Mark Talledo in men’s featherweight and Mark Banares in men’s welterweight.        In wushu, Agatha Wong notched Team PHI's second gold of the day with a succesful defense of her women's taijiquan crown at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. Tokyo Olympics bet Caloy Yulo opened his gymnastics campaign with a gold medal in the men’s all-around at the Rizal Memorial Stadium. Two gold medals came from sepak takraw in the men’s and women’s hoop events while Kim Mangrobang completed the Philippines’ triathlon win after ruling the distaff side. Rick Jason Senales men’s 90 kg. while IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia bagged the gold in online chess. The Philippines won 12 silver and nine bronze medals to close out Day 1. Alisson Perticheto and Christopher Caluza bagged silver medals in women’s and men’s figure skating, respectively.  Kim Remolino finished second to Chicano while Kim Kilgroe gave the Filipinas a 1-2 finish in triathlon. Other silver medalists were Jude Oliver Rodriguez (arnis), John Fabliar Ceniza (weightlifting), Niño Surban (cycling), Jenielou Mosqueda (kurash), Michael Angelo Marquez and Stephanie Sabalo and partners Mark Jayson Gayon and Mary Joy Renigen (dancsport), men’s polo and men’s water polo......»»

NCAA 95: Navarro, David the latest former Stags to find form in LPU

Two years ago, Renzo Navarro and Jayson David were part of a resurgent San Sebastian College-Recoletos that returned to the Final Four. Now in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament, Navarro and David are part of a rejiggered Lyceum of the Philippines University crew on a quest for continued contention. And on Tuesday, Navarro and David proved their worth to the Pirates - up against their former teammates with the Golden Stags, no less. The two connived for the bookending threes to the 13-0 run inside the last seven minutes that erased a five-point deficit and erected the edge the their side would keep for the rest of the game. In the end, Navarro turned in his best game in maroon and grey with 11 points while David contributed 10 markers, six rebounds, and three assists of his own. The two follow in the footsteps of the likes of ex-MVP CJ Perez, Nino Ibanez, Jeff Santos, and Rhanzelle Yong who once donned the red and yellow before rising and shining bright for the Pirates. Head coach Topex Robinson, himself a Sebastino, made it a point to say, however, that the much-anticipated match-up was never about them against their former team. "We were not out there to play for ourselves. Yes, they played for San Sebastian two years ago and they played their first game against their former team, but it's not Jayson and Renzo against San Sebastian," he said. He then continued, "It's about LPU vs San Sebastian. 'Di nila laban yun. They're just here to support each other." Indeed, the transferees could only agree with their mentor. As Navarro put it, "Since high school kasi, dun ako naglaro e tapos ngayon, kalaban ko sila. Siyempre, laging may extra motivation for me, pero enjoy lang talaga kasi pag kalaro mo mga kapatid mo, mga teammate mo." He then continued, "'Di naman ako naglaro para may mapatunayan. Gusto ko lang mag-enjoy kasi parang nasa practice lang kami sa laro kanina." David shares the same sentiment. "In-enjoy ko lang yung game kasi parang nasa scrimmage lang ako nung sa Baste e. Parang dati lang," he said. In the end, Coach Topex is only grateful to have fellow Sebastinos with him in Intramuros. "Renzo's been struggling a bit, but today, he showed his character. We're just so bless to have Renzo here and that also goes with Jayson," he said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
