4-time All-Star Alana Beard retires from WNBA after 15 years

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Alana Beard, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year who won a WNBA championship with the Los Angeles Sparks, is retiring after 15 years. In 2016, she helped the Sparks win a third WNBA title. She is third in all-time steals in the league with 710. Beard won Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2017 and '18. She also played for the Washington Mystics. The Sparks announced her decision Thursday. Team managing partner and governor Eric Holoman thanked Beard for what he called her "historic contributions" to the franchise and the league. The guard-forward from Shreveport, Louisiana, was a four-time All-Star. "I am so grateful for the many years I've been able to play the game I love, for the amazing players I've had the opportunity to play with and compete against, and for the tremendous fans I've been lucky enough to play in front of," Beard said. "I am excited for my next chapter and ready to pursue my next career. I look forward to using my platform to create opportunities for the communities that supported me throughout my journey, women and people of color." Beard had career averages of 11.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.7 steals, while shooting 43% from the field. She started 402 of 419 regular-season games and made 42 playoff appearances.  Beard was taken second overall in the 2004 WNBA Draft by the Mystics. She attended Duke, where she became the first NCAA player to score 2,600 points, dish out 500 assists and record 400 steals. .....»»

NCAA Season 95: Racraquin displays maturity in latest San Beda conquest

Cesca Racraquin knows too well that any team can bite back if taken lightly. So when San Beda University’s intensity dipped midway in the third set of the Lady Red Spikers’ match against San Sebastian College, she had to pull her team together and set her teammates’ minds back at the task at hand.     “Nag-relax na parang akala namin panalo na eh,” said the Season 92 Rookie of the Year and now San Beda skipper. The Lady Spikers saw its early lead in the third set evaporate and even trailed the Lady Stags by one before waking up from sudden slump with a five-point spurt to regain control of the frame on their way to a 25-13, 25-9, 25-21, win Tuesday for back-to-back wins in the NCAA Season 95 women’s volleyball competition. Racraquin needed to bark at her teammates in the closing stretch of the third set to bring San Beda back to order. “Nagagalit na ako sa loob. Pinapagalitan ko na sila kasi parang yung galaw nila parang ‘OK para matapos na lang’. Hindi na aggressive katulad noong first and second sets, yun ang nangyari kaya humabol sila at nalamangan na kami,” said Racraquin, who led all scorers with 19 points off 13 kills and six aces with three excellent receptions. Her teammates responded with a five-point barrage to turn a 17-18 deficit in the third to a 22-18 lead. “Pinagalitan ko na sila na, ‘Bakit ganyan ang galawan ninyo? Panalo na ba tayo? Hindi pa tayo panalo,’” Racraquin said. “Umayos naman sila. Parang nag-reel in sila na parang ‘Ok hindi pa panalo. Tapusin na lang muna namin hanggang 25 saka na lang kami magre-relax.’” Racraquin pushed San Beda to match point, 24-21, before Kim Manzano finished off the Lady Stags with a quick kill to close the one-hour, 27-minute encounter. The win pushed San Beda, which barely escaped Jose Rizal University in a five-set decision last Saturday, to a two-way tie with defending three-time champion Arellano University. The Lady Red Spikers’ last two games gave them a valuable lesson heading into their next assignments. ---    Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
