Even in Year 16, LeBron James refusing to slow down

By Tim Reynolds, Associated Press MIAMI (AP) — LeBron James stopped worrying about his place in history long ago. His legacy has been secure for years. The argument about where he ranks, whether or not he’s the best player to ever step on a basketball court, will continue forever and there will never be a definitive answer. That is, unless he keeps doing things like this. In his 16th season, James can still make the game look absurdly easy. The latest entry on the long list of his unforgettable nights came Sunday (Monday, PHL time), when James scored 51 points and led the Los Angeles Lakers to a 113-97 win over the Miami Heat. He’s only the second player to score at least 50 in a game this deep into an NBA career; the other is Kobe Bryant, in his final game, and that was aided by 50 shot attempts. “I’ve always been a guy to let the game talk for itself, speak for itself,” James said. “My body of work speaks for itself, still to this day, 16 years in.” He paused for a second, breaking into a big smile. “If there’s ever a discussion,” James said, “games like this will make sure you figure it out.” Bryant had gone more than seven years without a 50-point game before April 13, 2016, when he went 22-for-50 and scored 60 points at Staples Center as the Laker faithful roared for his work one final time. James hadn’t gone six months since his last 50-point night; it was Game 1 of last season’s NBA Finals, the one where J.R. Smith forgot the score in the final seconds and Cleveland lost to Golden State on the way to a sweep. James was methodical on Sunday (Monday, PHL time); he was 19-for-31 from the field, 6-for-8 from three-point range, getting to 51 points on a deep three-pointer in the final seconds with the outcome already long decided. “That’s all coaching,” Lakers coach Luke Walton said. “Just great coaching. ... No, the way he sees the game, he knows what he’s doing out there.” Through 16 games, though there’s nothing to suggest that he’s going to slow down this season — or anytime soon — James is his usual sensational self. He’s averaging 28.8 points on 52 percent shooting, with 7.7 rebounds and 6.9 assists per game. No one in NBA history has ever averaged that many points in a 16th season or later. Bryant is the only player to average more than 25 points this deep into a career; he averaged 27.9 points in 2011-12, 27.3 points in 2012-13. But it’s not just the scoring. Only Steve Nash, John Stockton and Jason Kidd — three of the best point guards ever — averaged this many assists at this point in their career. “He’s the best player in the world,” Lakers guard Lonzo Ball said. Added fellow Laker Kyle Kuzma: “He could average 40 if he wanted.” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, who had James for four seasons in Miami, describes James’ game in one word: “Timeless.” “Doesn’t matter what year, doesn’t matter how old,” Spoelstra said. “Consistency is as much of a talent as any physical or mental talent. He’s five-star in all of those.” James hasn’t won an MVP award in any of the past five seasons. For as good as he’s been, for as long as he’s been that good, it’s hard to believe that his first 15 seasons only resulted in him winning that award four times. He should be in the conversation again this year, and thought he should have won the award last year. “I just go out and my love for the game keeps me going,” James said. “My ability to put in the work, and see what happens after that. I know if I put in the work and be true to the game, then everything else will take care of itself.”.....»»

Walker scores 29, leads Hornets to 113-102 win over Hawks

By Richard Walker, Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Kemba Walker had 29 points and seven assists, extending his strong start to the season as the Charlotte Hornets beat the Atlanta Hawks 113-102 on Tuesday night (Wednesday, PHL time). Marvin Williams added 20 points for the Hornets (6-5), who won for the third time on a four-game homestand. Walker has scored 25 or more seven times in 11 games. Jeremy Lamb and Malik Monk each had 13 points for Charlotte. Nic Batum scored 10. Playing against his former team, Jeremy Lin had 19 points off the bench to lead the Hawks (3-7), who led by seven late in the first half. The young Hawks started 2018 first-round draft picks Trae Young, Kevin Huerter and Omari Spellman for the first time this season and pushed Charlotte before losing for the eighth time in the last nine meetings. Young finished with 18 points and 10 assists. Kent Bazemore added 16 points. Even after falling behind 81-77 entering the fourth quarter, the Hawks forged an 84-83 advantage with 10:04 to play before the Hornets went on a 19-4 surge to give them a comfortable lead down the stretch. Charlotte eventually led by as many as 15. Neither team led by more than seven until the fourth quarter. Atlanta was up 54-51 at halftime. TIP-INS Hawks: Count first-year Atlanta coach Lloyd Pierce among those who consider Walker one of the NBA's top players. "I'm a huge fan of Kemba. I've known Kemba for a long time. You're seeing a confident and elite scorer," he said. Pierce first met Walker at Nike Elite camps years ago and in August 2017 was a part of the NBA Africa trip with the Hornets' two-time All-Star guard. Hornets: Michael Kidd-Gilchrist dislocated his right pinkie in the first half but returned to play in the second. ... Charlotte coach James Borrego thinks the 20-year-old Young fits the league perfectly. "He fits today's NBA for sure. The minute he crosses halfcourt, he's a threat. He's a guy that can play-make, get to the rim, pass, finish, shoot the ball. The Hawks have a very good point guard for years to come," Borrego said. UP NEXT Hawks: Host the New York Knicks on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time). Hornets: At the Philadelphia 76ers on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time)......»»

Nets keep turnover-prone 76ers winless on the road

By Brian Mahoney, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — D’Angelo Russell snapped out of a slump with 13 of his 21 points in the second half, and the Brooklyn Nets kept the sloppy Philadelphia 76ers winless on the road with a 122-97 victory on Sunday night (Monday, PHL time). The 76ers committed 28 turnovers, most in the NBA this season, leading to 39 points for the Nets. They fell to 0-5 away from home. They are 6-0 in Philadelphia. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson also scored 21 points and Caris LeVert had 20 for the Nets. They took a small lead into halftime thanks to 17 Philadelphia turnovers, then blew it open with a 41-point third quarter that was one of the biggest in Barclays Center history. They kept pouring it on in the fourth and 76ers coach Brett Brown pulled Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons midway through the period facing a 24-point deficit. Embiid finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds, taking only eight shots a day after going for 39 points and 17 rebounds in a victory over Detroit. Simmons had 20 points and 12 boards. Russell was only 4-for-12 for eight points in the first half, a game after he was on the bench down the stretch in the Nets’ loss to Houston. The point guard shot 5-for-14 in that game and 3-for-15 in the previous one, and the former No. 2 pick’s benching was the biggest topic of conversation leading into the game. But he helped trigger to the big third quarter with eight points in the period and he was only on the bench as the final minutes ticked down this time because there was no crunch time. Joe Harris snapped a 61-all tie with a three-pointer, Russell scored five straight and Harris made another triple to make it 72-61. JJ Redick scored to end that drought but it didn’t change the momentum, as the Nets scored 15 of the next 21 points to open an 87-69 lead. The 76ers limited the Nets to 5-of-28 shooting in the first quarter but led only 21-18 in part because of their 10 turnovers. Philadelphia then made 9-of-14 shots in the second, but coughed it up seven more times to lead to seven points for the Nets, who scored 33 in the period and led 51-47 at halftime. TIP-INS 76ers: Wilson Chandler rested a day after making his 76ers debut by playing 10 minutes. ... Philadelphia had a three-game winning streak against Brooklyn snapped. Nets: Brooklyn improved to 9-4 against Philadelphia at Barclays Center, tied for the most victories against any opponent since moving from New Jersey. The Nets have also beaten Orlando nine times. ... Jarrett Allen had 15 points and 10 rebounds. FAMILIAR FACES The Nets have used the same starting five (LeVert, Russell, Joe Harris, Jared Dudley and Jarrett Allen) for each of the first 10 games of the season. The last time they did that was in the 2002-03 season, when Jason Kidd, Kerry Kittles, Richard Jefferson, Kenyon Martin and Dikembe Mutombo started the first 16 in a row. ... Harris made a three-pointer in his 25th straight game, moving into sole possession of fourth place on the team’s career list. Joe Johnson hit at least one in 37 in a row in 2014. BIG THREE The 41-point third quarter was one off the Nets’ high in Barclays Center, which opened in 2012. They had a 42-point third against Golden State last season and against the 76ers on Dec. 16, 2013. Most points scored by the Nets in a 3rd quarter in Barclays Center history (since 2012-13): UP NEXT 76ers: Visit Chicago on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time). Nets: Visit Phoenix on Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time)......»»

Thunder rally from 19 down in 3rd, top Hornets 111-107

By Steve Reed, Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Russell Westbrook had 29 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds, and the Oklahoma City Thunder overcame a 19-point third-quarter deficit to beat the Charlotte Hornets 111-107 on Thursday night (Friday, PHL time). Alex Abrines had 25 points on five three-pointers for the Thunder, who won their third straight. Malik Monk and Kemba Walker each had 21 points to lead the Hornets, who shot 11-of-41 from three-point range. The Thunder made a concerted effort to slow down Walker, who came in averaging 30 points per game. Walker failed to make a field goal before the break and had just three points, although the Hornets still led 48-44 at halftime. Walker came to life in the third with 10 straight points to help the Hornets push their lead to 19. Westbrook led the Thunder back. With 1:12 left, Westbrook drove and found an open Dennis Schroder with a crosscourt pass for an open three-pointer. After a Charlotte miss, Westbrook used a screen from Steven Adams to get by Michael Kidd-Gilchrist for a layup to push the lead to 108-102. Westbrook punctuated the win with a ferocious dunk with 13 seconds left off a fast break before stopping to glare at the crowd.
