Ateneo overwhelms UST for fine finish in UAAP 81 eliminations

Ateneo de Manila University has won seven straight heading into the Final Four of the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Blue Eagles’ latest win was a breeze as they dominated University of Sto. Tomas from start to finish, 102-62, on Wednesday at the MOA Arena. The defending champions began the game as if it was shot out of a cannon, scoring 16 unanswered points in the first six minutes. “We’re happy with the win because one of the first things we told the team is that coach Tab wasn’t there, but his system is already in place,” assistant coach Sandy Arrespacochaga said post-game. Ivorian rookie recruit Angelo Kouame dropped nine of his 22 points in that strong start as he and his team didn’t miss a beat even without head coach Tab Baldwin who was out due to an illness. That strong start ultimately became a 34-13 opening salvo that built up an insurmountable advantage in favor of Ateneo. Fellow first-year player William Navarro joined in on the fun in the second half, scoring eight of his 17 points after halftime while also totaling five rebounds and two assists. BJ Andrade and Jolo Mendoza also added nine points apiece as the Blue Eagles sweep the second round and end the elimination round holding a 12-2 record. “We didn’t want to take a step back or relax. That’s just our sentiments today,” coach Sandy said. Ateneo, though, is still uncertain about whom it will be facing in the Final Four as all of De La Salle University, Far Eastern University, and the University of the Philippines still have fighting chances at the third and fourth-seeds. For the Growling Tigers, Renzo Subido topped the scoring column with 18 points in their first game without super rookie CJ Cansino. They wind up their campaign at 5-9. UAAP: Even in coaching, Ateneo has a next man up

Ateneo de Manila University was yet again not at full strength on Wednesday at the MOA Arena. And yet, the Blue Eagles had more than enough to pound on University of Sto. Tomas by 40 points, 102-62. Throughout the tournament, the defending champions have had to overcome the absences of the likes of Thirdy Ravena, Raffy Verano, and Nieto twins Mike and Matt for certain contests. And this time around, they had to make up for the absence of head coach Tab Baldwin who was not in the venue due to an illness. “It’s kind of funny that we (have been) missing a lot of players for the season tapos ngayon, coach naman yung wala,” assistant coach Sandy Arrespacochaga, who called the shots instead, said post-game. Just like they did when some of their players were missing, though, Ateneo did not panic and stood tall. And just as Tyler Tio stepped up when Nieto wasn’t around and William Navarro came through when Ravena and Verano were out, coach Sandy did his best to make sure they didn’t skip a beat. Of course, the always amiable mentor had help from the players. “We’re happy with the win because one of the first things we told them is that coach Tab (isn’t here), but his system is already in place,” he said. Indeed, the Blue Eagles just did what coach Tab would have expected from them, scoring 16 unanswered points in the first six minutes and never looking back. “We wanted the players to step up because this time around, next man up was everyone else as the shoe we’re trying to fill was coach Tab’s,” coach Sandy said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

The rebuilding Hawks, who feature one of the NBA's youngest rosters, have lost three straight and seven of eight. Jeremy Lin finished with 19 points. His first basket, a 3-pointer from the right corner, came with 5:14 to go in the third, pushing the lead to 93-67. He finished with nine rebounds, nine assists and six points. The Pistons, who have won two straight, took their first 26-point lead on Stanley Johnson's three-point play midway through the second.
