Papua New Guinea under state of emergency after mob burns plane, gov’s house

Papua New Guinea has declared a state of emergency in its rugged Southern Highlands after an armed mob went on the rampage, torching a passenger plane and the local governor's house. They burned down Powi's home and the local courthouse in the town of Mendi late last week and destroyed an aircraft belonging to the national carrier at the airport. No one was hurt, and Air Niugini said the crew of the Dash 8 airliner were safe and had returned to the capital Port Moresby. Maghihintay lang ako dito [for Marck] -- Kianna Dy

We've heard Marck Espejo's side of the question. Now it's Kianna Dy's turn. It's never easy once a couple goes into a long-distance relationship. May it be due to work, travel, immigration, or any other cause, not being physically there for your special someone will take a lot of courage, determination, and of course, love. The UAAP Season 78 women's volleyball Finals MVP said that she is willing to wait for the five-time UAAP MVP as he makes history by joining Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler, one of the teams of the V1 League, Japan's premier volleyball circuit. "Napag-usapan naman na," Espejo then said about the couple's talk about the move. "Syempre supportive naman siya and alam niya naman na ito talaga yung gusto ko. And alam ko naman na pupuntahan niya ako dun," he added. While we won't be seeing Espejo until a good chunk of 2019 had passed, Dy, who was in the DLSU Lady Spikers' meet-and-greet at the Henry Sy Sr. Hall of the DLSU Taft Campus last Saturday, she said a special message that brought kilig for you and me. "I'm super proud of him, because I think it's the first time that a Filipino is going to play [in the Japanese league], and is considered to be an import. Super proud of him. He's making his mark internationally, so I'll support him and maghihintay lang ako dito," KKD said with a big smile on her face. KKD on Marck Espejo's Japan stint: "I'm super proud." Also: "Maghihintay lang ako dito."@abscbnsports — Philip Martin Matel (@philipptionary) June 9, 2018 Leaving Taft as a three-time champion, Dy also left a message for the incoming and aspiring Lady Spikers, who eventually will be part of the hunt in pursuing the team's 12th title. "Mag-tiyaga lang kayo and you know that it won't be easy. But you have to work hard. Patience lang. Patience sa teammates, patience kay Coach. Makuha nyo rin ang championship." Dy, who came in late due to graduation practice also thanked the hundreds of supporters, who braved the unpleasant weather and came to the campus to show support for their beloved team. KKD gets greeted by rousing greeting from fans who braved terrible weather. Kianna came in late from grad practice. PBA: There’s a bit of clicking in my shoulder -- Walker

Blackwater was left without a reinforcement after the first quarter. The Elite managed to hold the fort for the next two periods with Henry Walker sitting at the bench. Playing limp without their best scorer, Blackwater crumbled in the last 12 minutes of the match Friday to fall out of playoffs contention in the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Walker left the game after the first quarter as the import sustained a left shoulder injury in the Elite’s 94-104 loss to quarterfinals-bound Rain or Shine at the Big Dome.    “My shoulder’s just a bit sore. There’s a bit of clicking in my shoulder whenever I try to shoot,” said Walker, who played for only seven and a half minutes. “Been trying to work through it. Today I was shooting before the game and the pain got so bad and I couldn’t help my team.” Walker admitted that he’s been having problems with his shoulder since his first game of the conference in a loss to NLEX and decided not to risk aggravating it further. “Been experiencing it since the first game. Kinda having a little soreness and just getting hit on repeatedly. I just didn’t want to risk it any further,” added Walker, whose only basket came from a driving layup with three seconds left in the first period that gave Blackwater a 28-25 lead. The Elite bowed out of contention with a measly 1-8 win-loss record.  “We got a week so I’ll try to get some treatment,” said Walker. “Rest up and try to rehab. Strengthen the area around it and hopefully be ready for Friday.” With their conference already a bust, Walker and the Elite just want to work on their game and prepare for the Governors’ Cup.      “They’re coming around. They’re realizing they have the ability to play with anybody in the PBA and they’re showing it,” he said. “It took them longer than normal but we’re building towards something. I think in the Govs Cup we’ll see all the hard work pay off.”       --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

PBA: Blackwater achieving goals despite losses, says Bong Ramos

It has not been a great Commissioner's Cup for Blackwater. They had fired long-time coach Leo Isaac at the start of the conference, the only coach they had known since they had entered the league in 2014, and replaced him with Bong Ramos. Since the firing last May, Ramos has incurred a 1-5 record, including an upset win over Magnolia last Wednesday. Despite the record, believe it or not, Blackwater has slowly been achieving goals, says Ramos. The newly-installed coach cited having an 11-point lead versus top-seeded Rain or Shine, before collapsing and eventually giving the game away. "Actually, mahirap talaga talunin ang Rain or Shine, malaki e. Although yung game plan naman namin ok naman di lang talaga masustain. Ang importante sa akin dun na meron pa kaming naachieve na goal. Kung tatanungin ninyo, siyempre building up character," the mentor said after the game. Losing import Henry Walker to a shoulder injury in the first quarter, the Elite banked on an All-Filipino lineup, and almost completed the upset against the top-seeded team of the conference.  But Chris Tiu happened. "Nasunod naman. Kaya nga naka-control kami. Kaya lang, siyempre, sabi ko nga pagdating sa endgame, pag naka-dikit kami may tsamba kami. But na-hit kami ni Chris Tiu ng apat or limang three points, kung talagang titignan mo meron sana kaming tsansa." "Pero ok lang, part of building the character yan e. Pero nakikita ko na nagiging balanse na kami. Yun kasi ang una kong ginawa binalanse ko yung lineup eh." Now eliminated from playoff contention with a 1-8 slate, Ramos could only hope his team shows the same amount of grit against the San Miguel Beermen and the Meralco Bolts to bring end their campaign with a bang in the mid-season tournament. "At least, hindi sa umpisa umaayaw na so hopefully against Meralco and San Miguel next sana lalaban pa din kami. Pag lumaban pa rin kami dun sa dalawang yun kahit na di kami manalo basta lumaban yung team na yan, that means we're on the right track." __   Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary. .....»»

England completes World Cup prep by beating Costa Rica 2-0

LEEDS, England (AP) — Marcus Rashford scored from long range as England beat Costa Rica 2-0 in its final World Cup warm-up match on Thursday. In a rare England match away from Wembley, Danny Welbeck headed in the second after coming off the bench in the second half at Leeds United's Elland Road stadium. The victory came four years after England drew 0-0 with Costa Rica as it slumped out of the World Cup in the group stage. Just five members from Roy Hodgson's squad in Brazil are heading to the World Cup in Russia next year, with Gareth Southgate favoring promise over experience. This is a fresh group bursting with potential and Rashford is among the contenders to star judging by this audition in northern England, where a superb 25 yard (meter) opener in the 13th minute crowned a fine performance. The players were greeted earlier in the day by Prince William, who is president of the English Football Association but won't be traveling to Russia as a fallout from the diplomatic tensions between the countries.
