ASIAN GAMES: Philippine medalists given additional financial incentives

Medalists from the recently-concluded Asian Games just got richer after getting additional financial incentives for their hard work and success. The incentives, which were a sum of the funds given by the MVP Group, San Miguel Corporation and the PBA, were given to the athletes in a special ceremony before the Ginebra-San Miguel tussle at the Big Dome Sunday evening. Bronze medalists were awarded PHP 300,000 while silver medalists got PHP 500,000 and gold medalists were bestowed a prize of PHP 2,000,000 each.  The latter prize was is in addition of the previous incentives awarded by the Philippine government and the private sector of PHP 7,000,000 for the gold medalists. Some medalists were on-hand in the awarding ceremony, including Pauline Lopez (bronze, taekwondo); Agatha Wong (bronze, taijijian, taijiquan); Rogen Ladon (silver, boxing), Hidilyn Diaz (gold, weightlifting), Yuka Saso (gold, golf).  The winning National Sports Associations were also given a cash prize in a ceremony earlier this day. Finishing the quadriennial meet with a 4 gold- 2 silver-15 bronze medal count, the Philippines finished 19 out of 46 participating nations, coming up short of a top-15 finish that the national sports governing bodies had set for themselves, but a noticeable improvement from the 1-3-11 medal haul in the Incheon Games in 2014.  Philippine Olympics Committee (POC) President Ricky Vargas was nonetheless proud of the national athletes, whose countless hours of hard work and dedication had brought pride to the country. "That was difficult. We got 4 golds, which was something that we were very happy with. Also we just hit 19. Yung goal natin maging 15 eh darating rin tayo doon. Or even better," Vargas said after the ceremonies.  The ABAP President also added that additional private sponsors had pledged their support for the athletes in the upcoming South East Asian Games to be held in Clark and Manila late 2019. "They are coming in, and I am very happy that they are coming in. And they have confirmed their support just today. I spoke to some of them who were there in the Owner's Lounge there. So importante yun. Importante rin ang POC, di ba?" "So nag-meeting rin kami with [PSC Chairman William 'Butch] Ramirez and complete support for the South East Asian Games. They're coming to our place. To our home. We will perform well in our home."   __   Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary.   .....»»

Braves clinch 1st NL East crown since 2013, top Phillies 5-3

By George Henry, Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — Freddie Freeman stood soaked in champagne with music blaring and his teammates jamming in celebration. This was just how the longtime star first baseman envisioned it when the Atlanta Braves began spring training seven months ago. "You could tell after the first week of workouts that we had the talent to do something special," Freeman said. "Obviously we still needed to put it together. But this is what happens. You win the division after three straight 90-loss seasons." The Braves capped a most surprising season by clinching their first NL East crown since 2013, with Mike Foltynewicz taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday in a 5-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. A year after going 70-92, manager Brian Snitker and his Baby Braves surged back into the playoffs. A loud crowd at SunTrust Park joined the party when rookie Ronald Acuna Jr. caught a flyball for the final out, setting off another round of the Tomahawk Chop and a big celebration on the field. "When we started this series, we knew it was within our grasp," Snitker said. "We knew we couldn't lose track of today. I know I'm redundant saying that all the time, but I felt we just needed to stay current and worry about today's game. These guys have done an unbelievable job of that this year." The Braves will make their first postseason appearance since 2013 on Oct. 4 in the NL Division Series. It has not yet been determined who or where the youth-filled club will play in the best-of-five round. Atlanta won its 18th division title, tying the New York Yankees for the most in the majors since division play began in 1969. The Braves won their fourth straight game and beat second-place Philadelphia for the third day in a row. The Phillies also startled a lot of fans this year and led the division in early August, but faded while going 6-14 this month. Foltynewicz (12-10) tipped his cap to a standing ovation as he left with runners on first and second in the eighth with a 4-0 lead. Jesse Biddle relieved, walked the first batter he faced and gave up two runs on Cesar Hernandez's bases-loaded single. Brad Brach allowed Rhys Hoskins' RBI single before Jonny Venters escaped the jam on a lineout and a grounder. Kurt Suzuki added an RBI single to make it 5-3 in the eighth off Seranthony Dominguez, the seventh pitcher used by Philadelphia. Arodys Vizcaino, in his first save situation since June 17, closed out the ninth for his 16th save in 18 chances, getting Wilson Ramos to ground out, striking out Roman Quinn and retiring Maikel Franco on a flyball to Acuna in left. Phillies starter Jake Arrieta (10-10) lasted two innings, allowing four runs, four hits and three walks in the shortest outing of his nine-year career. "I didn't do my job today," Arrieta said. "You've got tip your cap. They won the division. They really did. This wasn't something that started today, obviously. Individually, the last month I haven't been very good, and we didn't take care of business. We just didn't get the job done. They did." Atlanta led 2-0 in the first when Arrieta walked three of his first four batters, and Johan Camargo hit a two-run single. Freeman hit a two-run single in the second to make it 4-0. Freeman, one of two current Braves who played on the 2013 division-winning team —along with pitcher Julio Teheran — is hitting .389 over his last 14 games. "When Franco hit that ball, I put my hands up right away," Freeman said. "It means everything. This is goal No. 1. It's celebration No. 1. We've still got three more we've got to do. We've got 11 wins to get in October. We've still got to take care of business, but, man, is this a great feeling." Foltynewicz didn't permit a hit until Odubel Herrera singled to begin the seventh. Franco singled with one out in the eighth. The 26-year-old Foltynewicz has matured in his third full season, earning his first All-Star appearance and posting a 2.88 ERA that's almost two full runs lower than his career average entering the year. "We knew we had something special since day one," he said. "We've been telling you guys that all year, but to be able to do it and pull it off is pretty special. They got four runs for me today, which was a good confidence builder to go out there and be aggressive." BIG SURPRISE Atlanta was not projected to contend when the season began. It was coming off three straight 90-loss seasons, had no proven ace and was counting on several young position players to complement Freeman, the lone big bat in the lineup. The team had been embarrassed off the field with former general manager John Coppolella banned from baseball in a signing scandal, but Atlanta moved into first place on May 2 and never trailed in the division race after a 9-1 win over Miami on Aug. 13. Fueled by young budding stars like Acuna, second baseman Ozzie Albies and third baseman Camargo, the Braves won the NL East with an 8½-game lead. New GM Alex Anthopolous watched his team arrive earlier than he expected. When spring training began, he didn't think the team would be a serious contender until next year. "No, I'd lying through my teeth if I thought that," Anthopolous said. "I thought we have a really talented team with high draft picks. We have the potential to be really good and have a chance to get better. We certainly exceeded all those things. Snit, the coaches, the players — they're the ones who deserve all the credit for the year we put together." BIG FADE Philadelphia faltered down the stretch under first-year manager Gabe Kapler. After winning on Aug. 5, the Phillies were 1½ games ahead in the division and 15 games over .500. They have since gone 15-28. "I think this is a really important moment to reflect back to the beginning of the season and really the offseason," Kapler said. "If we said that we were going to be playing a meaningful game on Sept. 22, I think a lot of people would've said that's not a reasonable thought. "On the flip side, this is ultimately a stain. This hurts, but I'm ultimately proud of the guys for putting us in this position and to be fighting in Atlanta kind of the season on the line today." ROUGH DAY Arrieta lasted 2 1/3 innings in a loss for the Chicago Cubs at Pittsburgh in his previous shortest outing Sept. 4, 2017. The Phillies dropped to 14-16 in his starts as Arrieta posted a 6.18 ERA and went 1-4 over his last eight outings. UP NEXT Phillies: RHP Aaron Nola (16-5, 2.44 ERA) has won one of his past four starts with a 5.01 ERA this month. Nola is 6-2 with a 2.24 ERA in 10 career starts against Atlanta. Braves: RHP Anibal Sanchez (6-6, 3.01 ERA) has won one of his past nine starts and has a 3.02 ERA during that span......»»

UAAP: UP protests loss to Ateneo

The University of the Philippines is urging the UAAP to put its loss to Ateneo de Manila University under review. “We write to officially protest and implore action against what transpired during the UP vs Ateneo game,” Fighting Maroons team manager Atty. Agaton Uvero said in a letter forwarded to UAAP Season 81 Executive Director Atty. Rebo Saguisag on Tuesday. He then continued, “The UAAP must do something about this not because we lost. Losing is part of the game, but unfairness and bad officiating (are) certainly not. Nobody wins when bad calls or non-calls be game officials are not rectified and allowed to continue.” The development was first reported by Mark Giongco of inquirer.net. A week ago, the Blue Eagles downed the Fighting Maroons, 87-79. In particular, State U pointed out an instance of “unfair” officiating when no foul was called on Ateneo’s William Navarro during a dunk attempt of Nigerian powerhouse Bright Akhuetie in the final frame. That non-call was blasted by head coach Bo Perasol right then and there and that led to his ejection. With that, he incurred an automatic one-game suspension to be served in their next assignment. According to a source, however, the letter is not an official protest of the result of the game, but more of a call for the league to review the refereeing. “It’s really not an official protest. It’s more of a letter from the management with a hope na ma-overturn yung ejection ni coach Bo leading to a one-game suspension,” the source said. Indeed, UAAP house rules state that for an official protest, a team captain should sign his name on the stat sheet right after the game in question. A recent example would be what College of St. Benilde skipper Yankie Haruna did following their close loss to San Sebastian College-Recoletos in the NCAA Season 94. UP also questioned officiating after they only had seven shots from the free throw line compared to the defending champions’ 31. For Ahkuetie, however, that just meant that the Fighting Maroons were not as aggressive as their opponents. “We barely attacked the paint, straight up. (Also, I was) shooting threes,” he said while chuckling post-game. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

UAAP: Coach Bo apologizes to UP for getting ejected

The University of the Philippines will not have head coach Bo Perasol in its next assignment on Sunday opposite University of Sto. Tomas. Coach Bo will have to serve a one-game suspension after he incurred a disqualifying foul in the Fighting Maroons’ 79-87 loss to Ateneo de Manila University on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum. As per the UAAP’s house rules, an ejection would then merit a one-game suspension to be served in the next assignment. For that, the always amiable mentor was the first to take blame. “I was emphasizing to my team na composure and I apologized to them because I was the one who first lost it,” he told reporters post-game. He then continued, “No matter what happens, I have to be accountable to them. No matter how bad the calls are going to be, it’s all part of the game.” Coach Bo was reacting to what he felt was a non-call near the midway mark of the final frame. Then, UP’s Bright Akhuetie tried to dunk on Ateneo’s William Navarro, but missed the attempt. In the eyes of the State U mentor, a foul should have been called and that’s why he was seen rushing at the referee. As he put it, “I think it was an obvious call for me. I think Bright got fouled in there.” He then continued, “I don’t know what was in their minds, but I wanted to make sure they understand. I’m not going to stand there and watch (us) lose because (referees) are not calling it.” Still, Coach Bo had to acknowledge that he probably took it too far. “I just have to be better as a coach. I have to make sure that I will be with them during those times,” he said. Rallying around his ejection, UP came as close as five, but ultimately fell to the defending champions. For that fight, their ejected coach was nothing but proud. “I have to commend my guys for fighting against the defending champions. I think that we made sure that we fought hard,” he said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

UAAP: Don t worry, Eagles youngsters will only be better

Ateneo de Manila University is mostly intact for its title defense. That didn’t stop them from adding a few more weapons, however, in UAAP Juniors champion SJ Belangel, 6-10 Ivorian Angelo Kouame, and former San Beda University forward William Navarro. Come the first game of the Blue Eagles in the UAAP 81 Men’s Basketball Tournament, however, the youngsters all showed rookie jitters and ultimately saw their squad fall to Adamson University, 70-74. Kouame only had a solitary point and 11 rebounds to go along with four turnovers in 19 minutes of play. Navarro, for his part, had five points in 2-of-8 shooting on top of six boards and three errors in 21 minutes of action. The most trying time on the floor, however, had to be that of Belangel who was scoreless in one and a half minutes while also turning the ball over twice. It was when Belangel was on the floor right before halftime that Jerom Lastimosa turned up the pressure and forced three turnovers that led to an 11-0 run that erased a 10-point deficit and erected a 40-39 confidence-boosting lead in favor of the Soaring Falcons. With that, Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin could do nothing but acknowledge that those three indeed showed their youth. “I thought that some of our younger players played like deer (caught) in the headlights. They needed to settle into the job quicker and I don’t think Adamson allowed them to,” he shared. He then continued, “I think there was a little bit of blood in the water and they were the sharks. They really went after them and they were effective doing that.” Still, coach Tab only believes that his youngsters will bounce back. As he put it, “We know our young players are good players. We know that they will learn from that experience.” He then continued, “They feel bad. They feel that maybe, some of this is on their shoulders. I told them, ‘No, it’s not.’” In the end, the always amiable mentor said that all of the Blue Eagles have some bouncing back to do. “When we give up 14 offensive rebounds and 17 second chance points, it has got nothing to do with rookies. It has something to do with defense and boxing out – all of which we failed to do. That ain’t a rookie issue,” he remarked. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
