MPBL: Pasaol takes charge for Zambo in Game 1 victory over Batangas

DAVAO CITY -- Fifth seed Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines gutted out a 78-74 victory over fourth-seeded Batangas-Tanduay, to take Game One of the 2019-20 Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Cup best-of-three quarterfinals, Monday at the Rizal Memorial Colleges Gym here. It was Davaoeno Alvin Pasaol who led the charge for Zamboanga, finishing with 17 points, five rebounds, two steals, one block, and an assist. With the crowd cheering them on largely thanks to Pasaol, Zamboanga led by 10, 42-32, early in the third canto. Trailing 76-67 with 3:37 left in the game, the Athletics launched a spirited comeback, scoring six straight points, capped by Jeff Viernes's two freebies with 28.8 ticks, to slash their deficit to just three, 76-73. Then on the other end, Alvin Pasaol's inbound was stolen by Jayson Grimaldo. A scramble for the loose ball occurred and Viernes was fouled by Anton Asistio. However, Viernes split his charities with 15.3 seconds remaining, 76-74, before Robin Roño was fouled. Roño calmly sank both free throws before Viernes missed two triple attempts to end the match. "We need to stay composed kasi playoffs na ito. Good thing we stuck on our defensive plan in the end. We made stops, we controlled the rebounds and hit the crucial free throws," head coach Britt Reroma said. Roño added 13 markers and eight rebounds while Aaron Black chipped in 11 points, four boards, and three dimes. Harold Arboleda chalked up 10 markers and seven rebounds as well. MPBL: Davao overcomes slow start to overpower Bicol

DAVAO CITY -- Reigning South king Davao Occidental-Cocolife shrugged off a slow start, overpowering Bicol-LCC Stores, 77-71, to gain the upper hand in the best-of-three quarterfinals of the 2019-20 Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Season, Monday at the Rizal Memorial Colleges Gym here. With Bicol in control for most of the first half, the Tigers used a huge third quarter, outscoring their foes, 28-19, to turn a 27-36 hole to a 55-53 advantage heading into the fourth period. Joseph Terso's triple at the 1:38 mark of the payoff period gave the Tigers a seven-point lead, 74-67, but Bicol's Jerome Garcia retaliated with quick four points to trim the deficit to just three, 74-71, with 24.8 ticks left. Then Davao's Yvan Ludovice iced the game with three freebies as the Volcanoes could not make the much-needed baskets. "It is playoff basketball. We have to be ready for that kind of situation where our opponent comes out aggressive. We were able to adjust in the second half and good thing we came out with the win," said Davao coach Don Dulay. Mark Yee spearheaded the Tigers with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists while Eman Calo contributed 18 markers off the bench. Billy Ray Robles was the energizer in the second half, pouring in all of his 11 points to go with nine boards, three blocks, two assists, and a steal. Garcia got 15 points for the Volcanoes while Chris Lalata added 12 markers in a losing cause. Ronjay Buenafe only had 10 points on a poor 3-of-12 shooting from the field.
