No truth to the allegation of corruption -- Ramirez on SEA Games

Philippine Sports Commission chairman Butch Ramirez on Friday denied the allegations that the country’s preparation for the hosting of the 30th Southeast Asian Games has been tainted by corruption. “There is no truth to the allegation of corruption,” said Ramirez in a statement. “Yesterday, Cong. Alan Peter Cayetano, and myself sat down with Sen. Bong Go and Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea to sort out issues being reported by news outfits in the past days.” Reports earlier this week surfaced that President Rodrigo Duterte is taking the embattled Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (Phisgoc) Foundation, Inc., a private body that aimed to organize the 30th SEA Games, out of commission and will be subjected to investigation due to alleged corruption and other irregularities. Ramirez cleared that all transactions made regarding the buildup for the biennial meet are met with ‘utmost transparency’. “We assure the athletes and the general public that all decisions and transactions will be done with utmost transparency,” he said. “The PSC, through the guidance of the Department of Budget Management and assistance of the Procurement Service shall work together to ensure that public funds are protected and that all disbursements or expenses follow existing government rules and laws.” A unity meeting to form a cohesive team for the country’s final push in the preparations of regional meet has been set. Ramirez, the chef de mission of Team Philippines, said all national sports associations that will participate in the coming Games and their athletes are invited during the gathering scheduled July 24 at the Malacanang Palace. The top brass of the Phisgoc and the PSC are also enjoined to attend the meeting to pledge their cooperation and all-out support to the entire organization of hosting the 11-nation sportsfest. “If we want to win as one, we should embrace a united front,” said Ramirez after attending the meeting with Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Senator Bong Go, Taguig City Congressman Alan Peter Cayetano and Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo on Thursday in Malacanang. “One team, one goal. The country should come together and be united in supporting this government effort,” added Ramirez, who led Team Philippines to its first overall title in SEA Games during the 2005 Manila hosting. Each national sports association has been tasked to bring along five athletes during the 10:00 a.m. Malacanang assembly. A total of 57 sports will be played during the Nov. 30-Dec. 11 Games to be held in three main clusters—Metro Manila, New Clark City and Subic. Ramirez has expressed high hopes that the meeting will encourage officials of the Phisgoc, POC and the PSC to move in one direction with four months to go before the biggest multi-sports event in the Asean region unfolds. Medialdea, Go and Cayetano, who also sits as chairman of Phisgoc, are expected to attend the gathering where at least 300 sports officials and athletes will be present......»»

De Guzman willing to sacrifice playing time if needed

Philippine national men’s volleyball team captain John Vic De Guzman is not bothered by critics as long as he’s doing his part for the cause. The very vocal skipper is even willing to give up some precious playing time if needed. De Guzman, who has been with the national team since 2015, said that the squad is still adjusting and looking for the right combination and all of the members in the 20-man pool are still vying for spots to see action in the 30th Southeast Asian Games in Manila in November. “This is a team sport naman kumbaga kung individual sport ito, siguro talagang ipaglalaban ko kung ano ang para sa akin,” said the opposite hitter and the Nationals’ team captain since 2017. “Pero this time kasi ‘yun nga healthy competition, kung sino ang deserving at kung sino ang talagang ipasok ng coach na sa tingin ng coaches siya ang magde-deliver sa ganitong specific na game, sa ganitong specific na sitwasyon, why not? Suporta lang kahit anong mangyari.” The Nationals got a taste of international competition with a fruitful stint in the 2019 Thailand Open Sealect Tuna Volleyball Championships in Sisaket a few weeks back. The Filipinos captured the bronze medal to boost their morale as they build up for the biennial meet. However, De Guzman and the rest of the squad know that there are still doubters and non-believers that hurled criticisms on the team’s shortcomings. “Sa mga haters, actually maging specific na tayo sa part na yun, nababasa namin siya. Well sa mga players na kagaya namin, nalulungkot kami kasi kumbaga yung sakripisyo na ibinibigay namin hindi naman ito para sa pansarili naming kagustuhan eh. Di naman kami naglalaro sa national team para may ipagyabang or may patunayan na magaling kami individually,” said De Guzman. “Naglalaro kami para maging proud ang sambayanang Pilipino. [Para] yun sa pride ng country natin na malaman ng ibang bansa na may ganito tayong klase ng sistema,” he added But instead of being down, they are taking these criticisms as a challenge to fuel their desire to bring honor and glory to the country that is slowly building its volleyball program to be at par with those in the region.    “Nagiging thankful kami sa kanila kasi nagdo-double time kami and mas tyinatyaga namin na pagbutihan pa para lang baka sakali na maintindihan nila at maunawaan nila yung pinangagalingan namin,” said De Guzman. The Nationals will fly to Thailand for a training camp from July 28 to August 10 and will set up another camp in Japan from November 5 to 20.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles  .....»»

The true Igorot is the politicized Igorot

We were politicized the moment we acquired this "Igorot consciousness," our collective social knowledge which drives us to take pride in being an Igorot, to defend our ancestral domain, and struggle for our right to self-determination. As early as the Spanish colonial era, Igorot consciousness took shape in our forefathers' armed resistance against the Spanish military and missionaries. In the early post-colonial years, Igorot students studying in Baguio City and Metro Manila formed organizations such as the BIBAK (Benguet-Ifugao-Bontok-Apayao- Kalinga) Association as an expression of indigenous pride. Under Martial Law, the Cordillera region became a battleground for indigenous people's rights during the anti-Cellophil and anti-Chico Dam struggles......»»
