Information war led to Khashoggi’s murder

David Ignatius WASHINGTON, DC: When Jamal Khashoggi entered the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on Oct. 2, he didn’t know he was walking into a killing zone. He had become the prime target in a 21st-century information war — one that involved hacking, kidnapping and ultimately murder — waged by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman… link: Information war led to Khashoggi’s murder.....»»

George H.W. Bush — kinder, gentler Republican

Every day Donald Trump comes closer to perfecting his Rodrigo Duterte impression. The CIA briefing on the Khashoggi murder essentially confirms that the Washington Post journalist was killed, then dismembered. There's no directive to "kill him." But as one U.S. senator said, "There's a smoking saw." But what do we hear from Trump about the culpability of the Saudi Crown Prince BSM? It's still "Maybe he did, maybe he didn't." That's the president of the free world, sounding like a White Duterte. In that sense, the 41stU.S. President George H.W. Bush departs the living at a good time. He lies in state, while the current president just lies. That was Bush's main role in current p...Keep on reading: George H.W. Bush — kinder, gentler Republican.....»»

Little Mermaid’s ‘Kiss the Girl’ song criticized by student over consent issue

For anyone who spent their childhood watching Disney movies, the image of Sebastian from "The Little Mermaid" singing "Kiss the Girl" during Ariel and Prince Eric's romantic rowboat scene perhaps remains one of the most memorable. But for Princeton University student Noa Wollstein, the song, even when sung by an animated anthropomorphic crab, is "more misogynistic and dismissive of consent than cute." Wollstein, in a scathing op-ed for the Daily Princetonian, called on to Princeton all-male a cappella group Tigertones last Nov. 26, to stop singing the song from their lineup. Wollstein highlighted the premise of the song, which encourages Prince Eric to kiss Ariel "without askin...Keep on reading: Little Mermaid’s ‘Kiss the Girl’ song criticized by student over consent issue.....»»

UAAP Season 81 fencing: UE claims men s 7-peat, Ateneo rules women s side

University of the East retained the men's championship, while teenage sensation Maxine Esteban powered Ateneo de Manila University in winning its first women's crown in 12 years as the UAAP Season 81 fencing tournament came to a close Sunday at the Victoria Sports Tower in Quezon City. The foil team of CJ Concepcion, JC Concepcion, Sammuel Tranquilan and Xavier Arabaca won the gold on the final day of the competition that served as an icing for the Red Warriors to extend their reign to a seventh straight year. The Recto-based fencers already annexed the crown Saturday, as the saber team of CJ Concepcion, JC Concepcion, Tranquilan and Jinro Villanueva emerged triumphant. UE, which also captured three silver medals, also clinched a league-best 13th title overall. The Warriors earlier swept the individual events, as CJ Concepcion nabbed the saber gold while Tranquilan topped the epee and foil events.        For the second straight season, Tranquilan was named the MVP.   Esteban's gold medal triumphs in the individual foil and saber events, as well as the Lady Eagles' victory in the team foil brought the Katipunan-based fencers back on top of the women's division. Esteban captured the Rookie-MVP award as Ateneo bagged its second title overall, and the first since 2006 behind sisters Faye and Veeg Garcia.  It also ended UE's amazing 11-year run in the throne. University of Santo Tomas' lady fencers finished second place with two golds courtesy of Marielle Peralta in the individual epee, and the team foil of Peralta, Andrea Bernal, Pauline Bernarte and Mira Dorimon.  The Tigresses also won a silver and two bronzes. The Lady Warriors finally won a gold in the fourth day, as Carla Arreza, Nicole Cortey, Joy Javinar and Marry Jae Lonzaga topped the team saber category.  UE also went home with three silvers and three bronzes to settle for third. De La Salle's gold medal quest in men’s team epee Saturday was enough to claim second place to go with a silver and three bronzes, while Ateneo's one-silver, five-bronze haul sealed third spot. Green Fencer Darryl Lumahan was named the top rookie. In the juniors division, UE achieved another golden double with Samantha Catantan and Prince John Francis Felipe claiming the season MVP awards in the girls and boys division once more. The Junior Warriors achieved a eight-peat in the girls division, while the boys streaked to their ninth straight championship. UST's Patricia Daradar was the girls Rookie of the Year winner......»»

They are stronger. They are a joy to work with," Effie Naas smiles as she takes a brief break from coaching three pairs of dancers who alternate in the roles of Snow White and the Prince. It is the fifth time in the 49-year history of Ballet Philippines that this original full-length ballet by Naas is being restaged. Collaborating with her are former principal dancers who played the leads in prior stagings: Perry Sevidal, who played Dopey, one of the seven dwarfs in the original 1988 production; Ria Bautista and Biag Gaongen who danced Snow White and the Prince, respectively, in the more recent 2007 restaging. Pinoy Pride 45: Albert Pagara knocks out Ghanaian foe in one round

Hard-hitting ALA Boxing star "Prince" Albert Pagara needed only one round to dispose of Ghanaian challenger George Krampah to retain the WBO Inter-Continental Super Bantamweight Championship in the co-main event of Pinoy Pride 45, Saturday evening in Cebu City. Racela on Eboña: Grabe yung puso ng batang yun

Barkley Eboña was a force of nature in Far Eastern University's Final Four-clinching win over De La Salle University. Aside from scoring 12 points, it was his rebounding prowess that was on full display all game long. He had a total of 16 rebounds, 10 of those coming from offensive possessions. He was the only player in the game that had  double-digit rebounds.  Plus, in terms of offensive boards, Eboña almost equalled all of La Salle's 11. His effort on both ends did not go unnoticed as coach Olsen Racela singled him out during the post-game press conference. "He just typifies the ‘Be Brave’ spirit ng FEU. The way he goes for those rebounds, the way he defends. He had 10 offensive rebounds. Grabe ‘yung puso ng batang ‘yun. He gave us a lot of extra possessions in this game," said the FEU mentor whose team had 54 rebounds compared to La Salle's 41. Due to his never say die attitude on court, it was just natural for Eboña to feel some physical pain during the match. In the dying minutes of the game, he was seen stretching both of his legs on the bench as he was experiencing severe cramps  from all the jumping and the hustling. But with 4:30 left in the game, Prince Orizu fouled out and Racela had no choice but to field the hurting Eboña back in. Regardless of what the Tamaraw was feeling, he said he could still fight. "Mahirap kasi dalawang paa ko nag-cramps. Inisip ko na lang na wala nang bukas. Bigay ko na lahat. Kung ano man mangyari, wala nang magagawa. Basta at the end of the day, wala akong pinagsisihan,” said Eboña. Practically playing with cramped legs and all heart, Eboña still played like there was no tomorrow. There was a specific sequence in the last few seconds where he was against four Green Archers going for the rebound but, it was the lone Tamaraw that soared above them all for the ball. Eboña's all-heart performance paid off as FEU sealed their spot back in the Final Four. They are set to face the top seeded team Ateneo de Manila University on Sunday for the semifinals. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @the9cruz.....»»
