UAAP Season 81: Eh dun na kami kilala -- Cheng on DLSU swag

Graduating De La Salle University hitter Des Cheng roared as she walked backwards while staring at Ateneo de Manila University’s Kat Tolentino following a monster block in the second set. It was Cheng’s classic swagger that volleyball fans just love to love or hate depending on which side they're on.      But the open spiker cleared that it just came out naturally, especially in this kind of exciting and intense match between two proud schools.    “’Di ko alam kasi siyempre, hello! It’s Ateneo-La Salle. So parang kahit anong sabihin mo may rivalry talaga kahit sabihin mong wala,” said Cheng, who scored 13 points in the defending three-time champion Lady Spikers’ 25-14, 25-17, 16-25, 25-19, victory over the Lady Eagles Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena. Cheng was very animated during the match smiling, laughing, doing the finger wag and whatever gesture she could think of to celebrate a point. Hindi ‘yung every point makakapuntos ka tapos tatahimik ka tapos parang, ‘Yeheey!’ ganun lang,’” said Cheng, who added 14 receives and nine digs for an all-around performance. The veteran expected that non-DLSU supporters would think that the Lady Spikers went over the top with their on-court reactions but this is what they’re known for and they are not gonna change that. Des Cheng breaks out the finger wag ☝ #UAAPSeason81Volleyball pic.twitter.com/bbVBMIYoGK — ABS-CBN Sports (@abscbnsports) February 17, 2019 “Eh dun na kami kilala bakit kailangang (i-hold back),” said Cheng. “’Dun kami kilala eh. Sabihin nyo na mayabang kami, swag kami, whatever kung ano ang pagka-interpret nyo it’s OK. Eh kasi yun na ang pagkakakilala nyo sa amin eh di dun nyo na kami i-ano talaga. Pero hindi kami mayabang. Ayun lang po talaga.” Even head coach Ramil De Jesus got into the celebration during that second set highlight, exchanging high-fives with Cheng.       The mentor, according to Cheng, actually asked her to be the spark plug and energizer of the team. “Kasi kailangan. Sabi ni coach, ‘Hindi gagalaw ang team mo kapag walang mag-spark.’ Meaning, kailangan may gagalaw para magi-spark sa kanila tapos susunod lang sila. Kaya kapag nakapuntos ako parang kahit hindi nga ako nakapuntos naga-ano ako na ‘Yeheey, yeheey!’ ganun-ganun,” she said. “Kasi kailangan nila yun kasi kapag walang isang tao na ganoon sino ang magli-lead sa kanila.” And to end her night, Cheng finished off Ateneo with an ace... and a finger wag as exclamation point.   Des Cheng. 10 things to know about NBA All-Star 2019

By Tim Reynolds, Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — With All-Star festivities set to officially begin Friday (Saturday, PHL time), here are 10 things to know going into the weekend: BACK TO CHARLOTTE Charlotte hosted NBA All-Star weekend in 1991, and now gets it back a second time to join 14 other cities that can say it hosted the league’s showcase midseason event on multiple occasions. Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Houston, New Orleans, New York, Orlando, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Seattle, St. Louis, Los Angeles and the L.A. suburb of Inglewood, California, are the other previous multi-hosting All-Star cities. The Bay Area, the Detroit area and the Dallas area are also two-time hosts, though never technically twice in the same city. LEBRON’S RECORDS LeBron James now has the record for most All-Star captaincies: Two. He and Stephen Curry had the jobs last year when the captain’s format was first introduced to the All-Star weekend, and he and Giannis Antetokounmpo have the jobs this year. But James’ records revolving around this game hardly stop there. By starting on Sunday (Monday, PHL time), James will tie Kobe Bryant with 15 starts in the All-Star Game. James will also extend his record of consecutive starts, which will also rise to 15. Some of the other All-Star records James already holds include total points (343), field goals (141) and three-pointers (35). And by playing two minutes, James will increase his All-Star total in that stat to 416 — one more than Bryant for No. 2 on the all-time list. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has played the most All-Star minutes, 449. FOULING OUT Bold prediction: No one will foul out on Sunday (Monday, PHL time). The last player to foul out of an All-Star Game was Hakeem Olajuwon in 1987. Chris Paul was the most recent to come close, when he was whistled for five fouls in the 2008 game. There have been only 14 instances of someone fouling out of an All-Star Game. Rick Barry and Bob Cousy each fouled out twice; 10 others, including Olajuwon, have done so once. MVPs AT HOME Kemba Walker, the lone Charlotte player in this year’s All-Star Game, has suggested that he’s hoping he can wow the home crowd with an MVP-worthy performance. There’s a history of that sort of thing happening. There have been 14 players who have won All-Star MVP honors in their home cities, spanning a total of 15 games. The list of hometown All-Star MVPs: Anthony Davis (New Orleans, 2017), Kobe Bryant (Los Angeles, 2011), Shaquille O’Neal (Phoenix, 2009 and Los Angeles, 2004), Karl Malone and John Stockton (Utah, 1993), Michael Jordan (Chicago, 1988), Tom Chambers (Seattle, 1987), Jerry West (Los Angeles, 1972), Rick Barry (the San Francisco area, 1967), Adrian Smith (Cincinnati, 1966), Bob Pettit (St. Louis, 1958 and 1962), Wilt Chamberlain (Philadelphia, 1960), Bob Cousy (Boston, 1957) and Ed Macauley (Boston, 1951). AGE MARK Assuming he plays, Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki — one of the special additions to the rosters by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, who also added Miami’s Dwyane Wade to the list — will become the second 40-something to appear in the All-Star Game. Nowitzki is 40; Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played in the game when he was 40 and 41. Michael Jordan almost pulled off the feat; he was eight days shy of turning 40 when he last played in the All-Star Game in 2003. Jordan, now the owner of the Charlotte Hornets and the unofficial host of the weekend, will turn 56 on Sunday. Wade, also assuming he gets into the game, will become the 12th player to be an All-Star at 37 or older. Wade turned 37 last month. HEROES Jason Weinmann and James Shaw Jr. might not be “celebrities,” at least not in the classic sense. But the NBA rightly believes they should be celebrated. Weinmann and Shaw were invited to play in Friday’s All-Star Celebrity Game to commemorate heroic acts. Weinmann, a retired Marine, used a military transport vehicle — which he bought at a government auction years ago — during Hurricane Florence last September to help rescue flood victims in North Carolina and bring them to safety. Shaw disarmed a man who had opened fire at a Waffle House restaurant near Nashville last April and has been heralded as a life-saving hero since for wrestling the AR-15 out of the alleged shooter’s hands by the barrel. G LEAGUE FIRST Khris Middleton of the Milwaukee Bucks is the first member of a new club. He’s the first G League alum to become an NBA All-Star. Middleton spent a short time during the 2012-13 season in the G League, before blossoming into one of the league’s best players and a key to Milwaukee going into the break with an NBA-best 43-14 record. There will be plenty of G League graduates participating on All-Star Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) as well — Middleton, Seth Curry, Danny Green and Joe Harris are all slated to be in the 3-point contest. CASH MATTERS There is some money at stake during All-Star Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) events, and everybody gets something. Everyone in the dunk contest will receive at least $20,000, everyone in the skills challenge gets at least $15,000 and all participants in the 3-point shootout take home at least $10,000. From there, prize money varies by finish — the skills challenge winner gets $55,000, the 3-point shootout champion wins $60,000 and the dunk contest winner takes home $105,000. In all, the Saturday night (Sunday, PHL time) participants will split $610,000. EASTBOUND This All-Star weekend is the first of four straight in Eastern Conference cities. Chicago gets it next year, Indianapolis in 2021 and Cleveland in 2022. The site for the 2023 game remains unknown; Salt Lake City and Sacramento are two sites often mentioned as candidates for that year, and Orlando is a likely suitor for the 2024 game. THE REFS Sunday’s (Monday, PHL time) All-Star Game will be officiated by Scott Foster, Curtis Blair and David Guthrie. It’s a home game of sorts for Guthrie, who resides in Charlotte. Foster worked the 2010 All-Star Game in Dallas. It’s the first All-Star Game for Blair and Guthrie. The Friday and Saturday (Saturday and Sunday, PHL time) events will be worked by a crew of newer refs — third-year official Aaron Smith and fourth-year officials Mitchell Ervin and Gediminas Petraitis......»»

PBA: Paul Lee has happiest birthday ever despite loss

Even though the Magnolia Hotshots fell to 0-3 after a James Yap game-winner, Paul Lee still thinks there will be something to look forward to on his birthday tomorrow, Valentine's Day. The Best Player of the Conference of the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup will be celebrating his 30th birthday  as a member of the Gilas Pilipinas pool in practice tomorrow morning. Lee said he will then have a simple dinner with his family along with a very special guest, the couple's new treasure, daughter Tokyo. Tokyo, who just turned four months old last Feb. 8, will be celebrating her daddy's special day for the first time, which has clearly made the spitfire guard all the more exciting Thursday. "['Y]un ang pinaka-maganda dun, 'yung magbi-birthday ako na may baby. So, wala ng mas okay pa doon. 'Yun na ang pinakamasarap na feeling, na birthday ko na mangyayari," Lee said after the Hotshots' 75-74 loss against red-hot Rain or Shine Wednesday evening. Now talking about the game, the UE alumnus thought that the game was over after he hit a difficult step-back jumper which gave his team the 74-72 lead with 6.1 left. So... ayun, we have a break after this game so we need to figure out kung ano talaga 'yung problema ng team, or kung ano 'yung dapat naming gawin. So we have time para ma-figure out," shared Lee.  As the whole league heads to a two-week break to give way for Gilas' most important stretch, he did note that his teammates are already in win-now mode and is confident that they could bounce back from their setbacks. "...[N]apag-usapan namin kanina sa dugout, kailangan 'yung sense of urgency andoon na talaga. Siguro alam naman ng lahat kung ano 'yung sitwasyon namin ngayon, so there's no point na magre-relax pa kami or what," Lee mentioned. __   Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary. .....»»

PlayStation counts ‘bigger, fewer games’ among E3 skip reasoning

"Bigger, fewer games," the ability to reach fans, retailers and press at other times, and a lack of big announcements this June are among reasons for Shawn Layden, chairman of Worldwide Studios at Sony Interactive Entertainment, to have PlayStation skip E3 2019. At the 2018 Electronic Entertainment Expo, Sony's console brand PlayStation focused on an unusually narrow band of four games: "Marvel's Spider-Man", "God of War", "The Last of Us Part II" and "Ghost of Tsushima". Two of those were launched toward the end of the year, leaving "The Last of Us Part II" and "Ghost of Tsushima" in the hopper, though with release dates still unannounced. Jordan: 6 NBA titles tougher than Harden, Westbrook streaks

By Steve Reed, Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Michael Jordan says James Harden’s streak of 30 straight 30-point games and Russell Westbrook’s 10 straight triple-doubles are both impressive and tough to accomplish. But the Charlotte Hornets owner said Tuesday (Wednesday, PHL time) — flashing a big grin — that there is one accomplishment tougher than both those feats: “Which is harder from the player’s standpoint? Six championships by all means.” Michael Jordan’s response to what is tougher to achieve - James Harden’s streak of 30 straight 30-point games OR Russell Westbrook’s 10 straight triple doubles... Classic Jordan. pic.twitter.com/upR8Xj1g07 — Steve Reed (@SteveReedAP) February 12, 2019 Jordan praised both players for what they’re doing, noting that both streaks are hard to accomplish. Jordan said the milestones show “the talent that we have within the league.” “It shows progression in the league,” Jordan said during an interview at his Hornets facility while discussing the upcoming All-Star weekend . “I am very proud of how both guys have done because they are making a mark for the league and I think it really helps grow the league.” Harden needed a late scoring spree on Monday night (Tuesday, PHL time) to extend his streak to 30 games, scoring 11 points in the final 100 seconds as the Rockets defeated the Dallas Mavericks 120-104. Harden, who is playing with a strained left shoulder, reached the 30-point mark by swishing a 30-foot pull-up jumper. Westbrook finished with 21 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists to notch his 10th straight triple-double in the Thunder’s 120-111 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, breaking a tie with Wilt Chamberlain for the most consecutive triple doubles. Both players will be in Charlotte this weekend for the All-Star game......»»

Bataan keeps rising in MPBL

The Bataan Risers are now beginning to pick up their second wind in the 2018-2019 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup, this after the squad posted yet another tough win last Monday at the packed People’s Center in Bataan.   Bataan has added Muntinlupa to its growing list of victims as the up and coming squad repulsed last season’s runner-up, 67-63, to continue staying on top of the standings. The win enabled the  Risers to improve their win-loss record to 19-2. They are the No.1 seed in the tough northern division and are already assured of a top four berth and home court advantage in the playoffs.   But head coach Jojo Lastimosa would rather want to see his team staying on top for a better reason.   “If we get the No.1 spot, we’ll be having home court advantage in each round in the playoffs,” added Lastimosa. “We want to win our remaining games as we want to carry the momentum all the way to the playoffs.”   Beating Muntinlupa was a great test and the Risers were able to live up to the challenge posed by the formidable Cagers team that battled the host squad toe-to-toe.   The biggest play of the night happened in the closing seconds of the game made possible by prized guard Yvan Ludovice.   Picked up in the free agency after being released by Pasay, Ludovice challenged the defense of Muntinlupa then fed Rob Celiz for the marginal basket that ensured the Risers’ victory.   Muntinlupa suffered its third straight loss and fell to a 12-8 card. It’s the second time this season that the Cagers have lost three in a row and the latest setback put them just half a game ahead of closest pursuer Batangas City Athletics in the southern division.   Earlier, Laguna turned to Ralph Olivarez and frontliner Raymond Ilagan as the Heroes outplayed the Valenzuela Classic, 74-66, in    Olivarez finished with 20 points while Ilagan had a double-double performance of 15 points and 17 rebounds as the Heroes stayed in the hunt for a playoff berth by improving their win-loss record to 10-13, good for eighth spot.   The loss was a crucial one for Valenzuela, which dropped to an 8-14 record and fell to 11th spot. Its chances of catching a top eight berth has been reduced from slim to none at all. .....»»

Rickie Fowler shoots 64 for 4-shot lead at Phoenix Open

By John Marshall, Associated Press SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Rickie Fowler had the lead heading into the final round last year at the Phoenix Open, only to see the title slip through his grip for a second time. He will have a big cushion in his third bid to win the championship following a stellar display of golf. Fowler had eight birdies in a 7-under 64 on Saturday at TPC Scottsdale to take a four-shot lead over Matt Kuchar into the final round. Fowler opened with four birdies in six holes and navigated a difficult two-putt on the par-4 18th hole to reach 20-under 193. Now it's time to finish it off. "This one is definitely high on the list, another being Torrey Pines," Fowler said. "I would say between here and there, those would be the two highest on the list other than a major." Kuchar shot a bogey-free 65 to put himself in position for his third victory of the wraparound PGA season. He has been par or better in all 19 rounds this season, winning the Mayakoba Classic and Sony Open. Justin Thomas, who started one behind Fowler, shot 65 and was five back of his friend and desert roommate. Branden Grace and Byeong Hun An were at 13 under on a day golf said goodbye to one of its most distinctive voices. Saturday's third round was the broadcasting finale of NBC lead golf analyst Johnny Miller's career. Miller followed a Hall of Fame playing career with three decades of calling it the way he saw it, regardless of what the players thought of him. Wanting to spend more time with his family, the 71-year-old Miller decided to call it quits after the Phoenix Open, where he won twice to help earn the nickname "Desert Fox." NBC played multiple tributes to Miller during Saturday's coverage and on-course announcer Roger Maltbie's voice cracked as he talked about his friend. "I appreciate the people out there. I do my commentating for you," Miller said. "I'm glad you accepted my form of commentating, which was not normal. It was a little rough at first, but it's just been a pleasure, the friendships I've made." Fowler had the 54-hole lead at last year and fell flat in the final round, shooting 73 to finish six shots behind champion Gary Woodland. He also lost in a playoff in 2016. Fowler put himself in position for a third run at the title with a superb round of golf. He had a one-shot lead over Thomas after closing with four birdies for a 6-under 65 in Friday's second round. Fowler made an eight-foot birdie putt on 18 to reach 13 under and quickly added to it on Saturday, dropping in an 18-foot birdie putt on the par-4 first hole. Fowler, who shot 64 in the opening round, added birdies on Nos. 3, 5 and 6 to reach 17 under, but had a par putt lip out after he hit into the greenside bunker at the par-3 seventh. He hit his approach to two feet for birdie at No. 9, turning in 4-under 31, and followed a birdie at the difficult 11th with a two-putt birdie on No. 13. Fowler reached 20 under with a birdie on the short par-4 17th for a nice cushion heading into what's expected to be a rainy final round. "I've done a good job of kind of everything this week," he said. "Nothing's standing out as super special, just playing solid golf and when I've gotten into trouble, being able to get up and down most of the time." Playing in the group ahead of Fowler, Thomas and Grace, Kuchar had three birdies for a 3-under 32 on the front nine and rolled in a nine-foot birdie putt on the 167-yard 12th hole. He two-putted for birdie on the par-5 13th and made a five-foot birdie on 15 to reach 16 under. Kuchar missed a good opportunity on No. 17, sliding a six-foot birdie putt past the hole, but finished with a nice save from the greenside bunker on No. 18. "It would be amazing to get three wins this early," Kuchar said. "It had been a number of years since I found the winner's circle, so to have gotten two in this year has been amazing." It may take an amazing round of golf to catch Fowler......»»
