Yup, Jalen Green just bested a pro dunker in NBTC Slam Dunk Contest

As if there was even any doubt about his talent, Jalen Green put all of those to rest on Friday at the MOA Arena. Not even an hour after taking flight in the 2018 NBTC Division 1 All-Star Game, the Filipino-blooded top sophomore in the US put on a show in the Slam Dunk Contest. And with four jaw-dropping slam jams, he left no doubt in winning the showcase. For Green, toppling Carlos, who won last year’s event, was the cherry on top of the cake that was his first visit to the Philippines. “That’s the biggest part right there, beating a professional dunker,” he said. More personally, though, the 6-foot-6, 16-year-old said he was just glad to have entertained his kababayans. “I came to a different country to put on a show. I just love the energy here,” he said. He then continued, “I’m really excited to win this.” --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

La Salle Lipa reclaims NBTC Division 2 crown

La Salle Lipa is now the winningest team in the three-year history of the National Basketball Training Center Division 2. The Chevrons won their second division championship by getting the better of Letran Bataan, 49-44, in the ultimate matchup of the 2018 Exped SM NBTC Division 2 National Finals at the MOA Arena, Friday. Matthew Virtucio was the hero for the Batanguenos, scoring 15 points, including the back-to-back triples inside the last five minutes which erased a one-point deficit and erected a 44-40 lead in favor of his team. “They boys really gave it their all. In the end, because of experience, we were able to deliver,” said head coach J-Rex Atienza. Isaiah De Leon converted his own triple to pull the Squires back to within one, but Dale Lupac had the quick counter for La Salle Lipa with four straight points for a 48-43 edge with 52.2 seconds remaining. Letran Bataan would no longer threaten from that point. Virtucio was no one man show for the Chevrons as Lupac had 10 points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals and Ian Abila chipped in nine markers, 18 big boards, and three steals. The win reclaims for Batangas the NBTC Division 2 crown it last wore in 2016. “At the end of the day, it’s just God-given. Our motivation is that we have 10 players graduating and it’s our last time to get it done,” said Atienza. For the Squires, Kevin Raymundo topped the scoring column with 13 points while De Leon got 11 markers, six rebounds, and two assists. The NBTC Division 2 was inaugurated in 2016. Richard Gomez buckles down to work as 18th Asian Games Chef de Mission

Ormoc City Mayor Richard Gomez began his first official activity as the country’s Chef de Mission to the 18th Asian Games in Indonesia this year by sitting down with the joint technical working group of the Philippine Olympic Committee and the Philippine Sports Commission at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex in Manila on Friday. “We have only four months left before the Asian Games,” said Gomez who immediately buckled down to work upon his appointment as CDM by newly-elected POC President Ricky Vargas. Budget, medical and administrative staffing, delegation size and quotas as well as provisions like luggage, track suits and parade uniforms were among the matters discussed by the 2018 Asian Games Task Force. Gomez imparted that they will not be veering away much from the estimated team size given by previously-tasked 18th AG CDM Julian Camacho.   "We still do not have the final numbers, but there will be not much difference from the previous projection," Gomez clarified, with adjustment seen to be applied for measurable sports. “We are strongly considering the inclusion of men’s basketball and women’s volleyball,” he added.  He also expressed his pleasure in seeing good coordination between Judo and Kurash. PSC Chairman William Ramirez said during the meeting that he shall respect whatever number (delegation size and composition) Gomez will endorse for support of the PSC. “We leave the decision to the POC. The PSC shall support as best we can,” Ramirez remarked. Ramirez also gave orders to assemble a medical team from the PSC’s Philippine Sports Institute to assist Asian Games-bound athletes. This is not the first time Gomez will be leading a delegation to battle in a multi-sporting event.  He was also the Chef de Mission in the 2014 Phuket Asian Beach Games, where the Philippines reached its best finish since the game’s inception in 2008 held in Bali, Indonesia......»»

Kiefer Ravena now 1-0 against Jeron Teng as coach

Kiefer Ravena and Jeron Teng have long been pitted against each other as main men for Ateneo de Manila University and De La Salle University, respectively. And when they got to the PBA, they were again serendipitously matched up with one another in the 2018 PBA Philippine Cup quarterfinals with Ravena in NLEX and Teng in Alaska. Now, even in the NBTC, they two remain very much entangled. Ravena called the shots for Team Dedication while Teng was the tactician for Team Passion in the 2018 NBTC Division 2 All-Star Game on Friday at the MOA Arena. In the end, Ravena’s squad got the better of Teng’s, 91-89. And in the end, Kiefer had a leg up on Jeron – in their first-ever coaching showdown. “Malaking bagay ‘to, siyempre. Kung sino mas magaling na player, mahaba-habang debate pa yun,” the former said. He then continued, “Pero at least ngayon, ako, mas magaling mag-coach.” For his part, Teng took the loss in stride and said he will just try for a bounce back in the next edition of the event. “Next year, magko-coach ulit ako rito,” he said. Whatever the result, both PBA rookies were nothing but impressed with the young talent from the provinces. “Maraming tumatak sa akin. (Kevin) Barranco, (Harold) Alarcon, (Marc) Angcap. Sayang lang, talo kami,” Jeron said. Ravena had the same thoughts about the wealth of talent in the Philippines. “Yung Rap Dimayuga, (Shawn) Algire, (James) Barrera, at Ryan Cruz, yun yung naging pandiin na lima ko. I’m very glad we pulled off the victory,” he remarked. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Bullpups bump off Greenies to get back on top of NBTC Division 1

Coming off a heartbreaking loss in the UAAP Juniors Finals just 21 days ago, the Nazareth School of National University Bullpups did not allow themselves to be on the wrong end of the history books once more, surviving a late surge by Joel Cagulangan and the La Salle Greenhills Greenies, 80-78, to claim the 2018 Exped Socks SM-NBTC National Championship, on Friday at the MOA Arena. This is the Bullpups' second national championship in the last three years. Moreover, this is Goldwin Monteverde's first major championship. "Siyempre very challenging talaga yung liga, from 32 teams, mage-end up ka sa number one. Masaya talaga para sa amin," shared Monteverde as the Bullpups had to go through Bacolod Tay Tung High School, Adamson High School, FilAm Sports, and Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu to get to the championship round. But it could not have been possible if it were not for the timely stops the Bullpups made to close out the game. After leading by as much as 13 points in the contest and 11 points with 4:33 left, Joel Cagulangan single-handedly powered the Greenies to an 11-0 run. The rally was capped by a strong drive to the basket by the top high school floor general in the country with 49.5 seconds left to knot the game at 77-all. Gerry Abadiano, though, was able to overpower Makoy Marcos to the rim, drawing a foul and knocking down both free throws to put the Bullpups up 20 seconds later. "As expected naman si Gerry talaga sa ilang beses na nakasama ko siya, even in tough games makikita mo na nagde-deliver siya," Monteverde beamed about Abadiano, who was his player in Adamson two years ago. "Ang maganda both ends of the floor, nakakapag-play siya ng good defense and at the same time, sa offense din." Off a timeout, Cagulangan was able to fish a foul from Paul Manalang. After making the first free throw, however, he muffed the second one. Mark Sangco was there for the offensive rebound, but Cagulangan's attempt was swatted away by Michael Malonzo. A split on the stripe by Rhayyan Amsali still gave LSGH a shot but Sidney Mosqueda struggled to give a good inbound that led to a desperation heave by Inand Fornilos that unfortunately did not go in. "Siguro for one, sometimes may mga bitter lessons din like yung last season namin sa UAAP, it boiled down to last two possessions," Monteverde recalled about Game 3 of the UAAP Juniors Finals that saw them squander a six-point lead late that led to a 58-63 defeat. Abadiano, who was crowned the Final's Most Outstanding Player, had 24 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Cyril Gonzales and Terrence Fortea finished with 12 and 11 markers, respectively. Cagulangan, who was named as the Most Outsanding Player of the tournament, led LSGH with 25 points. Fornilos, on the other hand, filled up the stat sheet with 18 poitns on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with 14 rebounds and four blocks. Making history is not the only motivation for San Miguel Beer heading into the 2018 Philippine Cup Finals against Magnolia starting Friday night. Hamilton: Australian GP could be start of competitive season

By Justin Bergman, Associated Press MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Lewis Hamilton won the Formula One driver's title in three of the last four years, but the Mercedes driver said Thursday on the eve of the season-opening Australian Grand Prix that he believes this year could be one of the most competitive yet in the sport. Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel, who pushed the British driver hard last season, performed well in testing a few weeks ago in Spain, along with teammate Kimi Raikkonen. And Hamilton said F1 fans will "be surprised just how competitive" Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen will be in Melbourne after putting a frustrating and inconsistent 2017 behind them. "There's a lot of hype around our team," Hamilton said. "I'm excited to see how we all fare up when we get to practice." For Mercedes, the hype at the start of each season is well-deserved: the team has dominated Formula One since 2014, winning four straight constructors' championships and 63 of 79 total races. But Ferrari demonstrated it could challenge Mercedes for a good portion of last season — Vettel actually led Hamilton through 12 races before the Mercedes driver took the lead for good at the Italian Grand Prix. Vettel said although he still believes Hamilton is the favorite to win the title again this year, his team has reason to be confident. "Our car is great . there's plenty to look forward to," he said. "Usually around this point, you don't know where the others are. That's why it's a bit pointless to come here and say you'll blow everyone away based on testing. I think we are in good shape. We could be in better shape, but it's always like that." Hamilton and Vettel have something else to vie for this year — a chance to pull even with former Argentine driver Juan Manuel Fangio for second place on the all-time championship list. Both drivers are tied with four titles, one short of Fangio's five. Michael Schumacher leads the list with seven titles. But for both Hamilton and Vettel, this statistic isn't top of mind. At least not at this early point of the season. "It's a long, long season," Hamilton said. "You don't really think about what could be, in the sense of matching others." And don't count out Red Bull. After a disastrous 2017 that saw the team struggle with engine problems and Ricciardo and Verstappen fail to finish 13 races combined, Red Bull is coming into the new season with hopes of challenging for victories again. "I think the car, compared to last year, definitely made good improvements," said the 20-year-old Verstappen, who finished last season strongly with two wins and a second-place finish in his last six races. "From my personal feeling, we have quite a strong car, but we have to wait and see how good our overall package is with the straights here (in Melbourne)." Ricciardo said anything will be better than last year's Australian GP, when he crashed in qualifying, started the race from pit lane due to a mechanical problem and then was forced to retire on the 28th lap. "Last year, we missed the anthem on the grid because I was in the garage trying to get the (car) going. I missed a lot of the Sunday build-up which was not fun," he said. "So, for sure this preparation is going to make more fun this weekend and we'll see where that fun takes us." It could take Red Bull all the way to the top of the podium — a result that couldn't come at a better time for Ricciardo, whose contract with the team expires at the end of 2018. "He's in a great place still with Red Bull," Hamilton said. "I think this year, he can really have a fighting chance to win the championship." Ricciardo, who's also facing a spirited challenge from his precocious teammate for the No. 1 position on Red Bull, said he's putting contract talks on hold to focus on starting the season strongly. "This is the year," he said. "Obviously, our prep's been good and I really, really hope Lewis is right and we will have a chance to fight for title and that will ultimately make me happy." Hamilton, though, isn't about to give an inch. He sounded a bit world-weary on Thursday, saying that after 12 seasons he's "not the most excited" about doing media conferences anymore, but he believes he still has as much passion for the sport as he did when he started out. "In my mind, I'm trying to break down new barriers, push the envelope," he said. "I'm seeing how far I can take the opportunity I have and obviously the ability I have to my full potential. I don't know what that is, and that's what I'm discovering.".....»»
