PVL: Lady Eagles weather Lady Falcons upset scare for back-to-back wins

Ateneo-Motolite survived an upset scare from a very game Adamson-Akari, 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 15-12, on Sunday to score back-to-back wins in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Kat Tolentino stepped up big time in the deciding set, scoring six points in the frame to help the Lady Eagles improve to 4-1 win-loss record at second spot behind unbeaten BanKo (5-0). Tolentino scattered 28 points off 20 spikes, five kill blocks and three service aces while Jules Samonte added 11 markers off the bench for Ateneo-Motolite. Maddie Madayag and Ponggay Gaston chipped in nine points each for the Lady Eagles' second win in back-to-back weekend schedule after taking down Iriga-Navy in straight sets Saturday.   The incoming third year hitter scored five of Ateneo-Motolite's first nine points as the Lady Eagles built a 9-3 advantage. Behind Bernadette Flora and Ceasa Pinar's heroics, Adamson-Akari closed the gap, 9-8.  Ateneo-Motolite again went ahead, 13-11, before Krich Macaslang scored a hit to push the Lady Falcons within one, 13-12. Tolentino put the Lady Eagles at match point before Vanessa Gandler sealed the win with a cross court hit.    “Every game this is our problem because siguro new system, we always start slow for the past few games we really start slow and we try to fix that problem,” said Ateneo-Motolite head coach Oliver Almadro, who commended the Lady Falcons’ floor defense. “I thank the Lord that we won today, we won yesterday,” he added. “But I’m not happy with what we’ve shown today. It’s because, I guess, we’re getting used to playing pa sa back-to-back (schedule) so siguro being a student and an athlete hindi pa sanay doon sa big games na magkasunod. But we have to be used to it and this is a learning experience for us and we really just have to maximize our strength and really believing kung ano ang ginagawa namin.” The Lady Falcons, who showed superb floor defense but were plagued with terrible errors, dropped their sixth game in as many outings tied with the Lady Oragons. Adamson was in control of the second set, 10-5, but committed 11 of the frame's 13 errors the rest of the way as the Lady Falcons giave Ateneo-Motolite a chance to steal the set and tie the match.  The Lady Eagles again came back from a 14-15 deficit with a 10-4 run capped by an attack error by Flora for a 24-19 lead. Ateneo-Motolite committed a net touch in the next play before Adamson-Akari surrendered the set on another miscue by Flora.         Flora finished with 25 points on 20 kills, three kill blocks and a pair of aces while adding 24 digs and eight excellent receptions. Chiara Permentilla and Gracelchen Ave scored 15 and 12 markers, respectively, for Adamson.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles      .....»»

Coric upsets Federer, facing Djokovic in Shanghai final

By Sandra Harwitt, Associated Press SHANGHAI (AP) — Borna Coric upset defending champion Roger Federer to face Novak Djokovic in the Shanghai Masters final on Sunday. Coric earned passage to the final by taking down the top-seeded Federer 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals on Saturday. "It was one of the best matches of my life," Coric said. Coric said neck pain almost caused him to skip playing in Shanghai. "Today, really, I just came on the court with absolutely no pressure. I basically didn't care, and that's why I played so good." The Croatian gave himself a third career shot at Djokovic. In their previous meetings, Coric failed to take a set off of Djokovic. The soon-to-be-No. 2-ranked Djokovic booked a final appointment after crushing No. 5 Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-1. Coric finished off Federer in style with the final two points an ace and a sizzling forehand crosscourt winner. Coric didn't offer Federer a break point opportunity, while managing to break Federer's serve in the opening game of both sets. In all, Federer presented Coric with seven beak point possibilities. "He had more punch on the ball. He served better," Federer said. "I got off to a bad start in both sets. That combination is plenty here in Shanghai with fast conditions." Federer has won three titles this year - the Australian Open, Rotterdam, Stuttgart - but all of them were earned before the start of Wimbledon in July. Federer was asked several times on Saturday about his schedule for the remainder of the year, as well as for next year. He said he couldn't offer any specifics but did offer a guarantee regarding 2019. "I wish I could tell you all these answers, but I really don't know. But I will play tennis next year, yes," he said. Coric, who is 2-2 against Federer, also beat the 20-time Grand Slam champion in their last outing at Halle in June. "Against that kind of player, you need something to hold on to," he said. "I was holding on to that thought that I beat him the last time." Djokovic's win over Zverev and Federer's demise guaranteed Djokovic will move up from No. 3 to No. 2 in the world rankings on Monday, which has him swapping positions with Federer, but still trailing Rafael Nadal. Djokovic's serve has not been broken this week in 37 service games. He never offered Zverev a break point opportunity, and broke the German's serve on four of six offerings. By the time Zverev was 6-2, 3-1 down, his emotions got the better of him after he hit a routine backhand into the net. He banged his racket on the court, then gave it another swipe before tossing the mangled implement into the crowd. Djokovic posted only nine unforced errors to 24 for Zverev. "I did everything I intended to do on my end," Djokovic said. "It's all working and it's been a couple of perfect matches." Djokovic is targeting his 72nd career title here on Sunday. He has won all three of his previous finals in Shanghai. Djokovic played his 1,000th career match against Zverev, and holds an impressive 827-173 win-loss record. "I wouldn't be so dedicated to this sport if I didn't believe that I can achieve great heights," Djokovic said. "But you always have to kind of pinch yourself, particularly at this stage of my career, and be grateful, because I have had an awesome career so far." He is on a 17-match winning streak and is 26-1 in matches played since the start of Wimbledon. A win on Sunday would deliver a fourth title of the season to Djokovic, beside Wimbledon and the U.S. Open......»»

NCAA: Mendoza drops career-high in JRU s comeback win vs EAC

Jose Rizal University has given itself a shot to not finish in last place in the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Heavy Bombers scored the first of the two wins to do just that by riding the hot hands of Jed Mendoza and rising over Emilio Aguinaldo College, 81-78, on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre. Mendoza dropped a career-best 26 points to go along with three rebounds and three assists while Aaron Bordon delivered four points and four rebounds including, more importantly, the defensive stop and layup that sealed the deal in their rise to 3-14 in the season. Clinging onto a one-point lead with seven ticks to go on the clock, Bordon put pressure on Generals’ guard Jethro Mendoza and forced the ball to come loose. He then wasted no time going all the way for the layup that finalized the margin of victory. Already with its third win and with one more assignment left in its schedule, JRU can tie EAC which ended its campaign at 4-14 in ninth-place. And since the Heavy Bombers swept the season series between the two teams, technically, they will stand at ninth while the Generals will stand at 10th overall. JP Magullano paced the Generals with a 15-point, 14-rebound double-double. Playing in his last game in the college ranks, Jerome Garcia scored seven points. NCAA: Bolick doesn t score 50, San Beda still downs Arellano

San Beda University will have a twice-to-beat advantage against whoever it will face in the Final Four of the NCAA 94 Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Red Lions scored the much-welcome playoff incentive after making quick work of also-ran Arellano University, 90-52, on Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Centre. Robert Bolick didn’t have a historic 50-point performance like he did the last time the two teams met, but he still made waves all over with 11 points, nine assists, and five rebounds. As always, Javee Mocon was right there with him and posted a 24-point, 11-rebound double-double. “Springboard sa amin ‘to going into the Lyceum game – especially for our bench players,” he told reporters post-game. It was also Mocon who fronted the 16-8 second quarter that broke the game wide open for the defending champions. The Chiefs would never recover from there and only saw their opponents mount a lead of as much as 38. With the win, San Beda has secured a top two finish in the elimination rounds still with two games left on its schedule. “At least, ngayong twice-to-beat na kami, we will have to consider the rest of our elimination round games as playoff games,” coach Boyet said, referring to their last two assignments against Lyceum of the Philippines University and University of Perpetual Help, both already in the Final Four. On the other hand, already-eliminated Arellano saw its standing fall to 5-12. Dariel Bayla topped the scoring column with 12 points and six rebounds while Ian Alban chipped in 10 markers of his own. NCAA 94: Already in playoff mode, Red Lions welcome all challengers

The actual NCAA Season 94 playoffs is still about a couple of weeks away, but defending champion San Beda has been in "playoff" mode for a while now. And despite officially clinching a twice-to-beat advantage after pounding hapless Arellano Thursday, the Red Lions will remain in playoff mode until the end of their current title defense. Because as champions, they have the biggest targets on their backs. And even though the actual playoffs in NCAA Season 94 is still about a couple of weeks away, San Beda's schedule to complete the regular season already looks like the postseason. San Beda still has Lyceum and Perpetual on deck before the Final Four officially starts. "It's really playoff mode for us," head coach Boyet Fernandez said. "Kasi we don't know eh. Kung ano sa future, as of now, gusto ko lang manalo kami sa Arellano and then look forward for Thursday [vs. Lyceum] and Tuesday [vs. Perpetual," he added. Being in playoff mode also means that the Red Lions are ready for all challengers. With a tough stretch coming up, including the Final Four, San Beda is pretty much saying bring it on. "We will be ready for every game," Fernandez said. "Rest assured that even though we're at the top-2, we're still going to play 100 percent and looking forward to a win every game," he added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

NBA.com 2018-19 GM Survey

By John Schuhmann, NBA.com Can the Golden State Warriors make it three straight and four out of five? The league's decision-makers think so, though a few of them have left the door open for a new champ. In the 17th annual NBA.com GM Survey, the Warriors are once again the overwhelming favorite to win the 2019 championship, just not quite as overwhelming a favorite as they were a year ago, when 93 percent of GMs picked them to repeat. With LeBron James moving to the Western Conference, the GMs have picked the Boston Celtics to return to The Finals after a seven-year absence, and there's some belief out there that the Celtics can dethrone the champs. The Celtics are led by the new "best head coach in the NBA," have one of the league's most promising young cores, and a star that one GM tabbed to win the MVP this season. But Kyrie Irving was just one of nine MVP candidates, the most in the history of the survey. There's no consensus on the player GMs would most like to start a franchise either, with four different players receiving at least five votes on that question. One of those four is LeBron James, who is entering his 16th season and his 13th season as the league's best small forward, according to GMs. He also remains the player that forces coaches to make the most adjustments, the best passer, the best leader, the most versatile player, and the player with the best basketball IQ. The GMs responded to 49 different questions about the best teams, players, coaches, fans, and offseason moves. General managers were not permitted to vote for their own team or personnel. Percentages are based on the pool of respondents to that particular question, rather than all 30 GMs. PREDICTIONS Which team will win the 2019 NBA Finals? 1. Golden State – 87% 2.
