Juventus revenues and losses rise in Ronaldo s 1st season

TURIN, Italy (AP) — Juventus' revenues increased by more than 100 million euros in Cristiano Ronaldo's first season with the club but losses doubled due in part to the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's hefty transfer fee of 100 million euros and a salary of 31 million euros ($34 million). The publicly traded club released financial statements Friday and proposed a capital increase of 300 million euros to cover costs through 2023-24. Revenues rose from 504 to 621 million euros, while losses increased from 19 to 40 million euros during a season in which Juventus was knocked out of the Champions League in the quarterfinals. Juventus would have earned 30 million euros more from UEFA if it had reached the Champions League final. Ticket sales rose by nearly 15 million euros last season while player and coaching staff wages increased by 68 million euros to 301 million euros. There was also a boom in merchandise sales. Ronaldo transferred from Real Madrid to Juventus in July 2018. The statement also included details on Adidas' sponsorship of the team. The contract was modified in December to an eight-year deal through 2026-27 for a total of 408 million euros plus bonuses......»»

UAAP 82: Lady Warriors deal Lady Maroons 35th defeat in a row

ANTIPOLO -- University of the East denied University of the Philippines from earning history at its expense, pulling off the 68-66 victory Saturday in the UAAP Season 82 Women's Basketball Tournament at Ynares Center here. Queen Ordas drilled the go-ahead three-point play that put the Lady Warriors up, 66-63 with 1:43 left to play as the Lady Maroons failed to convert on their end. With UP forced to foul in the waning seconds, Princess Pedregosa calmly sank her charities to make it a five-point game, 68-63 for UE with 11.6 ticks on the clock. Pesky Pesquera buried a trey on the other end to cut the lead down to two, but the Lady Warriors were just too slick as the Lady Maroons failed to foul as the buzzer horned. UE finally snapped its four-game losing skid to win its breakthrough victory this year, while keeping UP winless at 0-5 and continuing its 35-game losing skid. "Syempre, yun ang pinaka-pressure sa amin na may losing streak sila. Rebuilding kami pero yung players namin, mas beterano kaysa sa UP, kaya kung kaya naming kunin, kunin dapat namin," said coach Aileen Lebornio. Tin Cortizano led the Lady Warriors with 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block, while Nins Cuadero got 14 points and nine boards. Pedregosa also did her share with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Ordas got nine points and 11 boards, as Lebornio lauded the standout showing of playmaker Jearzy Ganade, who tallied nine points, 12 assists, and five rebounds for UE. "Last four games namin, doon kami pinapatay. Sabi ko sa kanya, dalhin mo yung team. Wag kang matakot magkamali. Pag nagkamali ka, mali ko yun," said Lebornio. Pesquera topped the Lady Maroons with 22 points on a 4-of-7 shooting from deep, to go with her 10 rebounds and four assists, while Stiff Larrosa had 16 points, four boards, and two dimes. The Scores: UE 68 -- Cortizano 19, Cuadero 14, Pedregosa 13, Ganade 9, Ordas 9, Nama 2, Tinio 2, Caraig 0, Fernandez 0, Terrinal 0. UAAP 82: UST opens double championship defense

University of Sto. Tomas opens quest for another golden double in the UAAP Season 82 Beach Volleyball tournament Sunday at Sands SM By The Bay. Ushering the post-Sisi Rondina era, the Tigresses will set in motion their bid for a fourth consecutive crown against University of the Philippines at 10:40 a.m. UST begins its back-to-back men's title bid against National University in an early showdown of favorites at 8 a.m., before returning in the afternoon session with a 1:20 p.m. duel with University of the East. Babylove Barbon, last season's top rookie who is more than ready to carry the Tigresses torch in the years to come, will have Gen Eslapor as her new partner. Setting its sights for a record seventh championship overall, UST will have to do it without Rondina, who has already completed her checkered collegiate career in the sand court. In her five years with the Tigresses, four-time MVP Rondina gave her school four titles. A perennial contender in the highly-popular Beach Volleyball Republic On Tour and were among the Philippine representatives in the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Boracay Open 1-Star last May, Barbon and Eslapor are looking good to continue UST's dominance in the sport.  Derie Virtusio will be the third player. Jaron Requinton, who with Krung Arbasto put the Growling Tigers back in the throne last year, will have Efraem Dimaculangan as his partner. De La Salle hopes to give UST a run for its money behind Tin Tiamzon and rookie Justine Jazareno. The Lady Spikers will play their season opener versus the Lady Bulldogs at 11:20 a.m. Together with Michelle Morente, Tiamzon led De La Salle to a runner-up finish last year. The Lady Maroons will have a brand new set of players, with Rosie Rosier, Euricka Eslapor and alternate Noreen Estrellanes hoping to sustain their podium finishes that Isa Molde, Justin Dorog and Tots Carlos gave in the last two years. In other season-opening matches, Ateneo, with Ponggay Gaston and rookie Roma Mae Doromal in tow, goes up against Far Eastern University at 12 noon, before Adamson University and UE caps first day of women's action at 12:40 p.m. Seeking to rebound from last year's third place finish, the Bulldogs will bank on James Natividad and James Buytrago. Incidentally, UST and NU are tied for the most number of men's titles with four. The Bulldogs' other opening day opponent will be Ateneo at 2:40 p.m. FEU's Jude Garcia and Doy Barrica will be one of the Tigers' biggest threats for the crown as the last season's second placers tackle Adamson University at 8:40 a.m. and UP at 2 p.m. Other men's morning matches are UE-Ateneo at 9:20 a.m. and UP-De La Salle at 10 a.m., while Adamson University-De La Salle will round up opening day action at 3:20 p.m......»»

TERRIFIC 12: Lance looking forward to “fun” semis vs. San Miguel Beer

MACAU — East Asia Super League’s The Terrific 12 here is Lance Stephenson’s first tournament with China’s Liaoning Flying Leopards. He’s played two games and he has two wins with his new team. On Saturday, Stephenson has a meeting with the PBA’s best team as the Flying Leopards and the San Miguel Beermen duke it out in the semifinals of the Terrific 12. The Beermen, who have been equally impressive here, will be fun to go against says Stephenson. “It’s gonna be a lot of fun,” he said. The Terrific 12 is pre-season for both Liaoning and San Miguel but that won’t stop the former one-time Laker from going all out. Stephenson wants that Terrific 12 title before he starts the CBA season. “Every game that I play, I approach it as a championship game,” Lance said. “When I’m on the floor, I wanna win. My goal is to learn my teammates so we’d be ready for the competition,” Stephenson added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PVL: Flying Titans eye end of five-game skid

Struggling ChocoMucho tries to turn its fortune around as it attempts to repeat over winless Chef’s Classics on Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan. After a promising 2-1 start, the Flying Titans saw themselves spiraling down with five consecutive losses to finish the first round in seventh place. ChocoMucho looks to check its skid at 2:00 p.m. against the last team it defeated in the first round a month ago. The match will air live on LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, iWant and via livestream. The Flying Titans are coming off a sorry five-set loss to Motolite last Sunday in their first game without prized middle blocker Maddie Madayag, who joined the national team in Thailand for a training camp and to participate in the inaugural ASEAN Grand Prix from Sept. 20-22 in Nakhon Ratchasima. Her departure left league-leading scorer Kat Tolentino to shoulder most of the scoring load but her 33-point production the last time out wasn’t enough to stop ChocoMucho’s bleeding. Shannen Palec, Arianne Angustia, Cindy Imbo and Kim Gequillana must step up their game to help Tolentino on offense to duplicate their first round win over the Lady Red Spikers. Chef’s Classics is still looking for its breakthrough win after dropping its first nine games. Nieza Viray and Justine Tiu need to get as much help as they can from the rest of the Lady Red Spikers to barge in the win column.   ---   Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

PVL: Lady Troopers try to reignite win streak

PacificTown Army started the second round on a high note and the Lady Troopers hope to sustain that momentum when they take on slumping BaliPure on Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center in Bulacan. Game time is at 4:00 p.m. and will air live on LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, iWant and via livestream. PacificTown Army defeated Chef’s Classics in straight sets last Wednesday to get back on the winning track after closing the first round with a stinging setback to Air Force last week for a 5-4 win-loss card. The Lady Troopers has fully adjusted from the absence of opposite hitter Jovelyn Gonzaga, who with head coach Kungfu Reyes joined the national team in Thailand to play in the ongoing inaugural ASEAN Grand Prix in Nakhon Ratchasima.      The trio of Honey Royse Tubino, Jem Gutierrez and Ging Balse-Pabayo, who tallied double-digit scoring the last time out, will again lead the charge of PacificTown Army against the squad they beat in four sets in the first round. On the other hand, BaliPure tries to stop a five-game bleeding behind the troika of Grazielle Bombita, Menchie Tubiera and Shirley Salamagos. The Water Defenders suffered a straight sets beating at the hands of unbeaten defending champion Creamline last Wednesday to fall to a 2-8 mark.     ---   Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
