5 CAFGU killed, 3 wounded in clash with NPA in Quezon province
Five members of CAFGU Active Auxiliary (CAA) have died following an encounter with members of New People's Army this Friday morning in Quezon province, the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ Southern Luzon Command spokesperson, Col. Dennis Cana, said. Lt. Col. Hector Estolas, the spokesperson of the 2nd Infantry Division (2ID), said the encounter occurred around 7:00 a.m. at Sitio Pag-asa, Barangay Mapulot, which borders Tagkawayan town and the municipality of Labo in Camarines Norte. Estolas said the CAFGUs were patrolling the area with one of their soldiers in Barangay Mapulot when they encountered the armed group. The troops were hit by an anti-personnel mine first before being fired upon by the enemies, he added. Three more militiamen under the CAA Detachment Mapulot and a lone soldier from the 85th Infantry Battalion were also wounded in the encounter. Estolas said the CAFGUs and military were conducting a patrol operation in response to a tip about the presence of around 60 to 70 armed men in the area. Meanwhile, Cana said families of the CAA are being notified and the remains were being transported to funeral services for proper respect and disposition. “We are giving our salute to these brave Filipinos who willingly gave their lives in the service of our country. They died protecting the community against these communist terrorists,” Cana said. The military is conducting an ongoing pursuit operation against the rebels. Cana said the NPAs may have come from a nearby province and may have thought that they still had their old haven in Brgy Mapulot, an area historically the ground of the famous NPA leader “Ka Roger.” “However, Information from the populace revealed the presence of the CT in the hinterlands, which our government troops acted upon. Quezon province had declared being insurgency free, and the people wanted to make it stay that way,” Cana said. Zelda, Mario movie boost Nintendo profits
Nintendo reported on Thursday a 52 percent jump in first-quarter net profits thanks to brisk sales of its latest "Zelda" game and the release of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie". Recording net income of 181 billion yen ($1.26 billion), the Japanese gaming giant left its net profit forecast for the full year to March 2024 unchanged at 340 billion yen. "The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom" had a "good start" after its release in May, recording sales of 18.51 million units, Nintendo said in a statement. The title's success not only led to a "significant increase" in software unit sales, but also drove hardware sales, Nintendo added. The game featuring the exploits of Princess Zelda and the elf-like warrior Link has sold 125 million copies worldwide since its first edition in 1986. The rapid sales of Zelda outstripped this year's other blockbuster game release, "Hogwarts Legacy", based on the "Harry Potter" series, which took two weeks to register 12 million sales. The April release of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" -- a joint project of Universal, Nintendo and Illumination studios -- proved to be another bonanza for the Kyoto-based firm. It was the year's first film to pass the global $1 billion mark at the box office. The film reignited interest among customers in the gaming series and generated "widespread positive effects" on everything from merchandise to smartphone apps, Nintendo said. Its premiere "positively impacted sales of 'Mario' related titles, with 'Mario Kart 8 Deluxe' recording sales of 1.67 million units (for cumulative sales of 55.46 million units)", the company said. Initially "it was said that the performance of the film would have nothing to do with Nintendo’s earnings, but it actually boosted sales of Switch consoles", Hideki Yasuda, an analyst at Toyo Securities, told AFP ahead of Thursday's results. All in all, hardware sales increased 13.9 percent on-year to 3.91 million units, and software sales increased 26.1 percent to 52.21 million units. Nintendo's April-June results were also buoyed by a weaker yen, which "inflated repatriated sales", Yasuda said. ‘Call of Duty’ to remain on Playstation
Tech giants Microsoft and Sony reached a deal to keep releasing the popular "Call of Duty" video games on the Playstation game console, Microsoft announced Sunday. Microsoft, the owner of the rival Xbox console, moved to acquire game studio Activision Blizzard -- which produces "Call of Duty" -- in January 2022. That move sparked fears of consolidation in the gaming industry, leading US and British regulators to hold up the finalization of the acquisition. Sunday's "binding agreement" means that "Call of Duty" games will continue to be released on both the Xbox and the Sony Playstation. "We are pleased to announce that Microsoft and PlayStation have signed a binding agreement to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation following the acquisition of Activision Blizzard," tweeted Microsoft's gaming head Phil Spencer. "From Day One of this acquisition, we’ve been committed to addressing the concerns of regulators, platform and game developers, and consumers," said Microsoft President Brad Smith. "Even after we cross the finish line for this deal’s approval, we will remain focused on ensuring that 'Call of Duty' remains available on more platforms and for more consumers than ever before." In December, ahead of the merger, Spencer had announced that Microsoft was committed to bringing "Call of Duty" to Nintendo, another console maker, following the completion of the acquisition. Sony had previously sought to block Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which also produces mega-hits "Candy Crush" and "World of Warcraft." The acquisition would make Microsoft the third biggest company in the gaming industry, in terms of revenue, behind Tencent and Sony. Momshie Jolens excited for daughter Vika’s first appearance on show
“Momshie” Jolina Magdangal-Escueta excitedly shared on Instagram a clip of daughter Vika, butterfly crown adorning her head, on her first appearance on “Magandang Buhay”. Vika is the second child of Jolina and Mark Escueta, the drummer of Rivermaya. The couple’s eldest, 9-year-old Pele, accompanied his sister on the show. It also marked for the first time all the momshie hosts’ children on the show. Mela and Stela, Melai’s kids with Jason Franciso, and Nate Alcasid, Regine Velasquez and Ogie Alcasid’s son, were all on hand to greet Vika on her 5th birthday. Jolina shared that for Vika’s birthday, the whole family went to Japan because Vika herself had requested it. Asked what she had enjoyed about the trip, Vika answered Nintendo World. Even the cold weather couldn’t put a dampener on her excitement, “It was basically raining, but soon it stopped.” Asked what fun things she enjoys doing, her brother Pele answered, “She likes putting stickers on… scrapbooks.” The show revealed the children’s appetite for travel as Nate revealed he wanted to go to Australia. Regine explained that because of the pandemic, they hadn’t been able to, but that it would be a good time to visit soon as Nate hadn’t seen his half-sister Sara in a long time. Sara is the daughter of Michelle Van Eimeren and Ogie Alcasid. Their other daughter Leila lives in Manila. Mela and Stela, who went viral with their over-the-top chicken nuggets convo, were their old intrepid selves regaling the audience with their hilarious antics. Stela even told a story about when she was in church, ”Nakita ko crush ko, pero pagkita ko…” she gestured that her crush gave her the thumbs down. Mela said she wanted to travel to Gensan, HK, Japan and Korea, while Stela wanted to go to Disneyland. SMIC bets on clean energy
SM Investments Corp., through its wholly owned Philippine Geothermal Production Co. Inc., is boosting its investments in renewable energy in support of the country’s growing advocacy for green energy and sustainable development. As a leading provider of clean and sustainable geothermal energy in the country, PGPC targets to increase its steam production by approximately another 300 megawatts of baseload renewable energy through its new exploration projects. This is set to increase its geothermal capacity to an estimated total of 600 megawatts. These new projects are in Northern Luzon: Kalinga, Daklan, and Cagayan; and Southern Luzon: Mount Labo and Malinao, which will form part of PGPC’s annual investment of approximately P3 billion a year. “SM is committed towards harnessing clean energy by increasing its capacity to provide steam. The Philippines’ location within the ‘Ring of Fire’ provides a huge opportunity for a low-carbon source of power. This is proven by PGPC’s half a century of reliable and consistent production of steam converted into renewable baseload electricity for its communities,” said Frederic C. DyBuncio, president and CEO of SM Investments. The post SMIC bets on clean energy appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

SM unit targets baseload RE supply
Philippine Geothermal Production Company Inc., a wholly-owned unit of SM Investments Corporation, will ramp up its steam production through new exploration projects as it targets to generate an additional 300 megawatts of baseload renewable energy. The company said Tuesday that the planned expansion will increase its geothermal capacity to an estimated total of 600 megawatts pr MW. PGPC has so far identified new projects in Northern Luzon: Kalinga, Daklan, and Cagayan; and Southern Luzon: Mount Labo and Malinao, which will form part of the company’s investment of approximately P3 billion annually. Ring of fire “SM is committed to harnessing clean energy by increasing its capacity to provide steam. The Philippines’ location within the ‘Ring of Fire’ provides a huge opportunity for a low-carbon source of power,” SMIC president and CEO Frederic DyBuncio said. “This is proven by PGPC’s half a century of reliable and consistent production of steam converted into renewable baseload electricity for its communities,” he added. PGPC boasts a safe, clean, and renewable process for harnessing power. For instance, the steam fields in Mak-Ban and Tiwi capitalize on the earth’s natural heat to produce steam that is captured by production wells. Third-party power plants The steam is delivered to third-party power plants to generate electricity which then goes to power transmission lines for distribution to homes and offices. As of March, the Mak-Ban and Tiwi steam fields have contributed to at least 57.5 billion kilograms in reducing carbon dioxide emissions since the start of its commercial operation — equivalent to 188,802 hectares of trees. SM remains committed to sustainability through investments in renewable energy that serve more communities nationwide as part of a wider range of initiatives of the SM Green Movement. Jica scholars learn mining
Recognizing the potential of the mining sector in the economies of developing countries such as the Philippines, a scholarship program of the Japan International Cooperation Agency has focused on targeting scholars and training them in Japan on mining development. The “Kizuna” Scholarship Program or “Human Resources Development for Government Officers and Researchers in Mineral Resources Rich Countries” targets government officials, educators, and researchers from Jica partner countries. Scholars are given study opportunities in Japan in areas such as economic ecology, exploration geophysics, resources production and safety engineering, and energy resources engineering. In addition, Kizuna scholars can deepen their understanding of the Japanese society, culture, etc. to become robust bridges between two nations and to enhance our close relationship. “Kizuna” means “the bonds of friendship” in Japanese. In the Philippines, a Filipino senior geologist from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Mines and Geosciences Bureau was the first Filipino to complete this Jica’s unique program for the mining sector. Mel Anthony Casulla completed his doctorate degree from Japan’s Kyushu University under the Kizuna program and is bringing in new ideas in mineral resources development in the country. His research “Geophysical Investigations to Image Crustal Features and Potential Mineralization in the Philippine Island Arc System” was completed under the scholarship. “The Philippines is a complex island arc system where many regions still lack geophysical studies. My research focused on understanding the regional geology and tectonics of the Philippines and the characterization of potential copper-gold mineralization in Eastern Labo in Bicol. We really need this kind of studies if we are to promote mineral resources development,” Casulla said. Casulla also noted that Japan uses advanced technologies such as Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System to organize their mineral-related activities. “I learned from Japan how science-based approach in decision making can solve common society problems. I hope that my research will give new insights and interpretation of the Philippines’ mineral potential,” he said. The post Jica scholars learn mining appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
In style and beauty
Never lose the opportunity to take care of yourself because healthy skin is power. With heat indexes still on high, our skin needs proper attention more than ever, and by that, we mean tweaking a few things in our skincare routine to make it more appropriate for our hot and humid tropical weather. Here are some of the latest cult favorites in the world of beauty. Sun-sational The hottest season of the year may give us great summer memories but also uneven and dry skin. Sun exposure contributes to sunburn, hyperpigmentation and drying out the skin. High humidity also leads to increased sebum production that can make oily skin worse and more prone to breakouts, while dry skin can get flaky and rough. Harmful UV rays can also make fine lines and wrinkles more visible. Staying in air-conditioned rooms, excessive sweating, dehydration and even the chlorine in swimming pools can dry out the skin’s natural moisture that can aggravate your current skin woes even more. It’s time to switch to light hydrating products like those from Japanese cult skincare brand Hada Labo. One of its bestselling products is the face lotion that sells out a bottle every five seconds in Japan. The product is known for making skin soft, bouncy, velvety matte and well-hydrated with five kinds of hyaluronic acid for oily or combination skin. Visit hadalabo.com.ph. The Low pH Niacinamide Micellar Cleansing Water contains key ingredients, such as Niacinamide, Allantoin and Hyaluronic Acid that soothe and hydrate the skin while removing makeup, unclogging pores and regulating excess sebum and oil secretion. Cosrx’s latest cleansing water was developed after discovering that skin irritation begins at the cleansing stage due to strong stimulation and residual impurities. Low pH Niacinamide Micellar Cleansing Water is available on the COSRX stores and at shopee.ph/cosrx.ph. Her choice Paula’s Choice is finally here in the Philippines with its latest product, the Pro-Collagen Multi-Peptide Booster.
