Antetokounmpo scores 33, leads Bucks to rout of Pistons

DAVE HOGG Associated Press DETROIT (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points and 16 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks routed the Detroit Pistons 126-106 on Thursday night. The Bucks led 70-41 at halftime and by as many as 34 points in the second half. Detroit could never get enough stops to mount any significant rally in the final two quarters. Former Piston Khris Middleton added 28 points for the Bucks, who won for the 15th time in 17 games. Eric Bledsoe added 19 points and Brook Lopez scored 18. The Pistons have lost five straight since trading Andre Drummond to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Feb. 6 and were playing for the first time since buying out Reggie Jackson's contract. Christian Wood, one of seven players in the game who has played for both teams, had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Bruce Brown finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The game was lopsided early, with the Bucks leading by 14 at the end of the first quarter and 29 at the half. Detroit's 41 first-half points were only two more than Middleton (20) and Antetokounmpo (19) had on their own. The Milwaukee also had a 14-0 advantage in points off turnovers. TIP INS Bucks: Antetokounmpo was called for a technical for arguing a third-quarter call with Milwaukee leading by 29. ... The win meant the Bucks still haven't lost back-to-back games this season. Pistons: Detroit had two former Bucks, Tony Snell and Thon Maker, in the starting lineup and three more (Wood, Brandon Knight and John Henson) on the bench. Middleton started his career with Detroit and Ersan Ilyasova has also played for the Pistons. BIG POSSESSION The Bucks had a chance at a 7-point possession in the third quarter, thanks to Wood committing a flagrant foul on a made basket. Donte DiVicenzo finished the three-point play and Antetokounmpo added a free throw after a technical on Pistons coach Dwane Casey. Because of the flagrant foul, the Bucks retained the ball, but Antetokounmpo was called for an offensive foul. NBA: Miami s Jones wins slam dunk contest; Hield tops 3-point shootout

CHICAGO (AP) —  Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. celebrated his 23rd birthday by winning the All-Star Slam Dunk Contest, edging Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon in a memorable showdown that required two tiebreaker jams. Jones and Gordon each got a perfect 50 on both of their dunks in the final. Then they got two more perfect scores on their first jam in the dunk-off. Jones then took off from just inside the foul line and threw down a windmill jam with his left hand, drawing a 48 from the panel of five judges. After a short discussion with Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal, Gordon brought out 7-foot-5 Boston Celtics rookie Tacko Fall and positioned him near the basket. He then took the ball from Fall's hands on his way to a thunderous dunk. The United Center gasped as the courtside NBA stars celebrated. But Gordon was awarded a 47, giving the victory to Jones. Gordon also lost a memorable dunk contest to Zach LaVine in 2016. Earlier, Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield made a late surge to win the NBA 3-Point Contest. Hield nailed a two-point money ball from the corner to finish with 27 points, edging Phoenix Suns All-Star Devin Booker by one in the final round. Hield is one of the few bright spots for struggling Sacramento, averaging 20.4 points while shooting about 39 percent from 3-point range. Washington's Davis Bertans opened the second and final round with a 22, before Booker eliminated him. Defending champion Joe Harris of the Brooklyn Nets and Chicago's Zach LaVine were eliminated after they failed to crack the top three in the first round. Five racks with five balls each were set up around the perimeter — two in the corner, two on the wings and one up top. Four of those racks had four balls worth one point each plus a multi-colored two-point ball. The other had nothing but moneyballs. There were also two green balls worth three points set up six feet behind the 3-point line......»»

Ateneo stamps class on winless Letran to sweep PCCL 2020 elims

On the back of a 30-4 third quarter onslaught, Ateneo de Manila University pounded on Colegio de San Juan de Letran and powered its way to the Final Four of the 2020 Philippine Collegiate Champions League. From a tied tally at 35-all at the half, the Blue Eagles rang off 20 unanswered points that eventually ended as a convincing 79-61 victory, Saturday at Filoil Flying V Centre. As always, the UAAP champions got contributions from up and down the roster, with Dwight Ramos and Troy Mallillin showing the way this time around with the former finishing with 16 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and two assists and the latter ending with 16 markers and six boards of his own. Still, they were actually chasing down the newly crowned kings of the NCAA after one and a half quarters before Ramos sparked a late charge to end the first half. And coming out of halftime, Ateneo just turned it up a notch and only allowed two makes on defense while burning down the nets on offense. Letran would never recover and saw its campaign come to a close without a win. The undefeated Blue Eagles now await the winner of the Visayas-Mindanao group for a semifinal showdown scheduled on March 7 at Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig. SJ Belangel chipped in 10 points as they ran through the gauntlet of UAAP and NCAA Finalists without a loss. Pao Javillonar fronted the effort for the Knights with 15 points. Without Larry Muyang and Ato Ular in this one, however, they didn't have enough firepower to match up with the Blue Eagles. BOX SCORES ATENEO 79 - D. Middleton, Bledsoe help Bucks beat Kings minus Antetokounmpo?

By JIM HOEHN Associated Press MILWAUKEE (AP) — Khris Middleton and Eric Bledsoe scored 28 points apiece to lead the Milwaukee Bucks past the Sacramento Kings 123-111 on Monday night, as the Bucks won without new father Giannis Antetokounmpo. Antetokounmpo, the reigning MVP, missed the game after he and his girlfriend welcomed their first child, a son whose birth he announced earlier Monday on his Twitter account. Milwaukee trailed 90-88 after three quarters, but opened the final period with 13 consecutive points as Sacramento missed its first five shots. Bledsoe capped the run with back-to-back 3 pointers to put the Bucks up 101-90. Bogdan Bogdanovic hit two free throws to pull the Kings within 103-97 with 5:58 remaining, but the Bucks pushed the lead back to 111-100 on a 3-pointer by Donte DiVincenzo. Harrison Barnes had 23 points and De’Aaron Fox added 17 for the Kings, who had won four of their previous five. Brook Lopez added 20 points for the Bucks, who improved their NBA-best record to 46-7. Milwaukee is 4-6 when trailing after three quarters. Sacramento, which trailed 38-24 after one quarter, took its first lead at 57-56 on Nemanja Bjelica's layup with 37 seconds left in the half. After making 16 of 31 shots in the first quarter, including 5 of 12 from beyond the arc, the Bucks were just 6 of 21 in their 19-point second quarter. TIP-INS Kings: Forward Jabari Parker, acquired at the trade deadline from Atlanta – where he missed 20 of his last 21 games with a right shoulder impingement – was inactive Monday for the third consecutive game with Sacramento. Coach Luke Walton said there is a chance Parker could play Wednesday at Dallas. Bucks: Milwaukee signed veteran forward Marvin Williams on Monday and waived forward Dragan Bender. Williams, in his 15th season, averaged 6.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 41 games with Charlotte this season. The 6-foot-8 Williams, the second overall pick in the 2005 draft by the Atlanta Hawks, has averaged 10.3 points and 5.2 rebounds over his career. Bender averaged 3.7 points in seven games with the Bucks and also played in 13 games for the Wisconsin Herd of the NBA G League. UP NEXT Kings are at Dallas on Wednesday. The 35th AT&T Slam Dunk is part of State Farm® All-Star Saturday Night, which also features the Taco Bell® Skills Challenge and the MTN DEW® 3-Point Contest.  All-Star Saturday Night will air live on TNT and ESPN Radio in the United States at 8 p.m. ET.  NBA All-Star 2020 will reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages. Here is a closer look at the 2020 AT&T Slam Dunk participants: • Pat Connaughton, Bucks (1st appearance): The 6-5 guard is in his second season with Milwaukee after spending his first three NBA seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers.  Connaughton (CONN-uh-ton) recorded a max vertical leap of 44 inches at the 2015 NBA Draft Combine, tied for the third-highest mark in event history.  He was selected as a pitcher by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft. • Aaron Gordon, Magic (3rd appearance): Gordon returns to AT&T Slam Dunk for the first time since 2017.  The 6-9 forward ranks third on the Magic in scoring (13.6 ppg) and second in rebounding (7.2 rpg) in his sixth NBA season. • Dwight Howard, Lakers (4th appearance): Howard is an eight-time NBA All-Star selection, eight-time All-NBA Team selection and three-time Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year.  The 6-10 center ranks 14th in NBA history in both rebounds (13,553) and blocked shots (2,120). • Derrick Jones Jr., Heat (2nd appearance): As a rookie in the 2016-17 season, Jones became the first player to compete in AT&T Slam Dunk and play in the NBA G League in the same season.  Since then, the undrafted Jones has earned a full-time role in the NBA.  Nicknamed “Airplane Mode” for his leaping ability, the 6-7 Jones won a national dunk contest for high school players in 2015.    2020 AT&T Slam Dunk Rules In the two-round event, participants can perform any dunk they choose.  The players have a maximum of three attempts to complete each dunk in both the first round and the final round.  Five judges score every dunk on a scale of 6 to 10, resulting in a high score of 50 and a low score of 30.  The judges will be announced at a later date.
