UAAP Season 81: Eh dun na kami kilala -- Cheng on DLSU swag

Graduating De La Salle University hitter Des Cheng roared as she walked backwards while staring at Ateneo de Manila University’s Kat Tolentino following a monster block in the second set. It was Cheng’s classic swagger that volleyball fans just love to love or hate depending on which side they're on.      But the open spiker cleared that it just came out naturally, especially in this kind of exciting and intense match between two proud schools.    “’Di ko alam kasi siyempre, hello! It’s Ateneo-La Salle. So parang kahit anong sabihin mo may rivalry talaga kahit sabihin mong wala,” said Cheng, who scored 13 points in the defending three-time champion Lady Spikers’ 25-14, 25-17, 16-25, 25-19, victory over the Lady Eagles Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the MOA Arena. Cheng was very animated during the match smiling, laughing, doing the finger wag and whatever gesture she could think of to celebrate a point. Hindi ‘yung every point makakapuntos ka tapos tatahimik ka tapos parang, ‘Yeheey!’ ganun lang,’” said Cheng, who added 14 receives and nine digs for an all-around performance. The veteran expected that non-DLSU supporters would think that the Lady Spikers went over the top with their on-court reactions but this is what they’re known for and they are not gonna change that. Des Cheng breaks out the finger wag ☝ #UAAPSeason81Volleyball — ABS-CBN Sports (@abscbnsports) February 17, 2019 “Eh dun na kami kilala bakit kailangang (i-hold back),” said Cheng. “’Dun kami kilala eh. Sabihin nyo na mayabang kami, swag kami, whatever kung ano ang pagka-interpret nyo it’s OK. Eh kasi yun na ang pagkakakilala nyo sa amin eh di dun nyo na kami i-ano talaga. Pero hindi kami mayabang. Ayun lang po talaga.” Even head coach Ramil De Jesus got into the celebration during that second set highlight, exchanging high-fives with Cheng.       The mentor, according to Cheng, actually asked her to be the spark plug and energizer of the team. “Kasi kailangan. Sabi ni coach, ‘Hindi gagalaw ang team mo kapag walang mag-spark.’ Meaning, kailangan may gagalaw para magi-spark sa kanila tapos susunod lang sila. Kaya kapag nakapuntos ako parang kahit hindi nga ako nakapuntos naga-ano ako na ‘Yeheey, yeheey!’ ganun-ganun,” she said. “Kasi kailangan nila yun kasi kapag walang isang tao na ganoon sino ang magli-lead sa kanila.” And to end her night, Cheng finished off Ateneo with an ace... and a finger wag as exclamation point.   Des Cheng. UAAP Season 81: Naga-adjust pa lang kami -- Bagunas

National University top hitter Bryan Bagunas admitted that the Bulldogs are still adjusting with the absence of starting setter Kim Dayandante.    The Bulldogs’ struggles were just too obvious after suffering a shocking 12-25, 18-25, 17-25, loss at the hands of Far Eastern University Saturday in the UAAP Season 81 men’s volleyball tournament at the FilOiul Flying V Centre in San Juan. Bagunas was the only NU player in double digits with 15 points on a 14-of-37 spiking clip.     “Siguro sa ngayon naga-adjust pa lang kami kasi late na nasabi na di makakapaglaro si Kim eh. Mga three days before this game saka sinabi na di makakapaglaro si Kim so nandun ang adjustment namin ngayon,” said Bagunas. Dayandante was dropped from the roster after the eligibility screening. Rookie Joshua Retamar got a baptism of fire as starter, tallying 18 excellent sets in 82 attempts. “Sa set play naga-adjust pa kami kasi sa mga laro namin sa labas ang ginagamit namin si Kim Dayandante nga so wala pa yung jell namin sa (bagong) setter namin,” Bagunas added. Another problem that plagued the ASEAN University Games gold medalists is the number of errors they committed. NU threw 32 points off their miscues. “Isa pa rin ‘yun ang errors na ‘di namin na-control na naman. Nandoon na naman ‘yung sakit namin bumabalik,” Bagunas said. “Siguro kailangan pa naming ma-maintan ‘yung dati na nali-lessen namin ang error namin.” Still, the Bulldogs remained positive despite the loss. “Sabi naman nila coach Dante (Alinsunurin) start pa lang ito hanggang May pa ito,” said Bagunas. “’Di pa rito natatapos ang season so umpisahan uli namin sa training. Talagang pupukpukin na namin ang jell namin para sa next game.” NU will face University of the East next week.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

UAAP Season 81: They’re not an easy team -- Okumu on UE

University of the Philippines head coach Godfrey Okumu was not surprised when it took his wards five grueling sets to shoot down the pesky University of the East. The mentor, actually, expected that kind of tough match. “No, we’ve always struggled with UE,” said Okumu after the Lady Maroons’ 25-12, 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12, escape over the Lady Warriors Saturday to open their campaign in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre. The sophomore coach recalled the same struggle they had against UE during their pre-season meeting in the Philippine Superliga Collegiate Grand Slam.     “I remember last season I was sitting here the same way we won against them. When we played in the PSL we won 3-1 but it was all struggle,” he said. UP needed to come back from a 1-2 match deficit before hanging tough in the tight fifth set behind the veteran trio of Isa Molde, Tots Carlos and Justine Dorog.   “Siyempre naga-adjust din sila sa amin. And lumakas din naman sila compared last season,” said Molde, who had 23 points with 19 coming off kills. “Lalaban at lalaban din naman sila kasi may iba sa kanila na ga-graduate na eh.” Okumu also stressed that UE’s best asset is its floor defense and the presence of graduating libero Kath Arado. The defense specialist scattered 32 digs and had 18 receptions. Me-Anne Mendrez got 18 digs while Judith Abil posted 21 receives. “They have a good libero, she’s doing a good job. We have to accept that it’s very hard to play against a very strong defense,” he said. “We have to think on how we will execute in spiking. They played well and they are a very good team. They’re not an easy team.” UP hitter Tots Carlos shared the same sentiment. “Iba kasi talaga kapag mayroon kang first ball eh. Sobrang galing ni Kath kaya medyo nahirapan kami kaya medyo nag-lay low din kami sa defense namin so nahirapan kami lalo na laging nagi-struggle ang setter kaya nahihirapan din siyang mag-distribute,” she said. Okumu also rued UP’s atrocious number of errors. The Lady Maroons threw away 42 points off their miscues. “The sets we won we’re very, very up to standard but the sets we lost we gave away balls easily, and we have many unforced errors that we should correct. That’s what we talked about the unforced errors,” he said. “I think in the fifth set the opponent had one unforced error and we have around five or six,” Okumu added. “You can see the difference there and we need to work on that.”     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Eduard Folayang Relishes Chance To Defend World Title With Kevin Belingon In Japan

When ONE Lightweight World Champion Eduard "Landslide" Folayang flies to Japan for ONE: A NEW ERA, he will not be doing so alone.   The Filipino mixed martial arts icon is ecstatic he will be competing on a card which will also feature his Team Lakay brother and ONE Bantamweight World Champion Kevin "The Silencer" Belingon, as they both are scheduled to battle a pair of legends on Sunday, 31 March at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.   Folayang will defend his World Title against Shinya "Tobikan Judan" Aoki in the main event, while Belingon will defend his belt against Bibiano "The Flash" Fernandes on the undercard.   Just the experience of preparing for two World Title bouts in what is arguably the biggest ONE Championship card ever assembled is enough of a motivation for Folayang.   "I am very happy to headline ONE: A NEW ERA. Any athlete would want to headline this event. I am just grateful to ONE Championship for giving me this opportunity to be the main event," said Folayang.   "I have an added inspiration by having Kevin Belingon on the same card. We can share outputs with each other on how we can emerge victorious in Japan. It will be a fun night."   Team Lakay, the renowned gym from the mountains of Baguio, didn't get to start the year the way they hoped for.   Joshua "The Passion" Pacio had his ONE Strawweight World Title taken by Yosuke "Tobizaru" Saruta on 19 January by split decision in the main event of ONE: ETERNAL GLORY at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia.   Six days later, Geje "Gravity" Eustaquio dropped the ONE Flyweight World Title in front of his home crowd. He lost to his old rival Adriano "Mikinho" Moraes by way of unanimous decision in the main event of ONE: HERO'S ASCENT at the Mall Of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.   That is why keeping both belts in the Philippines will be integral for Folayang and Belingon, although "Landslide" admits that it's easier said than done.   "The goal is to successfully defend both belts in Japan," he confessed. "It is so easy to think and say, but it’s very hard to do. We will do our best to bring the belt back home to the Philippines.".....»»
