Joshua Pacio admits to shortcomings in close title loss to Yosuke Saruta

JAKARTA, Indonesia---Filipino Joshua Pacio was the first to admit his shortcomings against Japanese Yosuke Saruta in their world title fight Saturday night. Pacio lost by split decision to yield the strawweight belt to the gritty Saruta in only his first title defense, just four months after winning it. Shortly after the grueling fight, Pacio could only wish he had done things differently. "I know my shortcomings in the fight. I felt I was too defensive and he (Saruta) just kept coming forward. Yes, he was able to take me down but he wasn't able to take control of me that long," Pacio told reporters in Filipino. The Team Lakay star, who just turned 23 on January 10, thinks Saruta's...Keep on reading: Joshua Pacio admits to shortcomings in close title loss to Yosuke Saruta.....»»

Boxing: Manny Pacquiao looks for first WBA title defense against Adrien Broner

Eight-division boxing world champion and current reigning WBA (Regular) Welterweight World Champion Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao returns to Las Vegas for the first time in two years as he looks to defend his title for the first time against American four-division world champion Adrien Broner at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Saturday evening (Sunday morning, Manila time).  Pacquiao, who turned 40 just last December, continues to defy age as he goes for an impressive 15th world title defense.  Many believe that even at his advanced age, Pacquiao still has what it takes to compete at the highest level of the sport.  The boxer-slash-senator is coming off one of his most impressive performances in a long while, knocking out Argentinian brawler Lucas Matthysse in seven rounds to capture the WBA's secondary welterweight world title.  Now, Pacquiao makes his highly-anticipated return to the boxing capital of the world as he looks to successfully defend the title against a tough challenger.  Broner, eleven years Pacquiao's junior, is also looking to add another milestone to his already impressive resume, as the Ohio native is looking to capture his fifth world championship in as many weight divisions.  Aside from a fifth world championship, AB is also looking to break a back-to-back streak of winless bouts after losing to Mikey Garcia and then going to a draw with Jessie Vargas.  A win for Pacquiao could mean even bigger things in the future, with the rumblings being that a rematch against Floyd Mayweather Jr. could be in the works, should the Filipno boxing icon take care of business on fight night.  For Broner, a win over Pacquiao instantly becomes the biggest on his resume and he once again holds world title gold, nearly four years after his last world champioship win. .....»»

PBA: Wright and Phoenix finally showing maturity

ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal — Phoenix badly wanted maturity to come with their growth as a team, especially after the Fuel Masters somehow botched a twie-to-beat edge as the no. 2 seed to end last season in teh 2018 PBA Governors’ Cup. Early in the 2019 Philippine Cup, it appears that the Fuel Masters have found some of that maturity and are using that to win close games in the All-Filipino. Two games into the new season, Phoenix already has two overtimes. The Fuel Masters won both, allowing them to take over first place so far. “Phoenix of the past would’ve lost that game,” Wright said of their overtime win against TNT Saturday at the Ynares Center here. “After Pogoy hit that shot to tie the game, we would’ve crumbled by then. But we stuck together, we’re becoming more experience and we’re becoming more of a veteran team,” he added. Another great sign for Phoenix has been the team’s conditioning. Also known as a pressing team, the Fuel Masters have shown great endurance despite playing back-to-back overtime games. Phoenix certainly looked like the fresher team during the extra five minutes in separate wins against Meralco and TNT. “I’m just happy we won, because like you said, back-to-back overtime games. We really have to dig down deep in those kind of situations. I’m happy that we looked like the more conditioned team,” Wright said. “We came off an overtime game so we’re much more experienced in that department than they are. Luckily they’re tired towards the end of the game and they were starting to miss their shots. That’s just credit to our strength and conditioning coaches and how we run our practices. We thought we’re in really good shape today,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

ONE Championship: Edward Kelly gets stopped by Christian Lee in Jakarta

Filipino mixed martial artist Edward "The Ferocious" Kelly had no answer for the aggressiveness of Singaporean star Christian Lee, as he fell via TKO in the second round of their featherweight rematch at ONE: Eternal Glory, Saturday evening at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia.  Lee was the aggressor from the get-go as he immediatley looked to take Kelly down to the ground.  Kelly found himself trapped in a head in arm choke, and Lee used the lock to bring the fight to the ground.  Once there, it was all Lee, as the 20-year old former world title challenger transitioned into mount and eventually stopped Kelly via ground and pound in the first round.  A much different result from their first meeting wherein Lee was disqualified after a slam that left Kelly unable to continue was ruled illegal.  After the match, Lee called for another shot at Martin Nguyen and the ONE Featherweight World Championship.  The 34-year old Kelly drops to 11-6 in his career.  Lee meanwhile, improves to 11-3. .....»»
