Old School Power Rankings 2018-19: Weeks 15-16

By Scott Wraight, NBA.com It almost happened. The King almost surrendered the throne and his crown. But thanks to an impressive performance, the kingdom avoids disarray -- for now. Over the past month or so, it's becoming clear that we have a slight separation of powers, with the Big Three putting some distance between themselves and the field. But that could change depending on how a certain big man responds to his new surroundings in Toronto. And now that he's back and healthy, that gritty guard in Houston could quickly ascend the ranks. - NOTE: Statistics are through games of Feb. 8 (PHL time) - Any player who turns 32 during regular season can be added to rankings. - Check out previous rankings. 1. LeBron James (34), Los Angeles Lakers Previous rank: 1 Latest stats: 3 games, 23.3 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 10.0 apg Season stats: 27.0 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 7.4 apg James must have sensed he was about to lose his spot at the top of the mountain, as he quickly responded with an impressive triple-double against the Celtics (we'll overlook the 1-for-5 from the free-throw line). The King hasn't shown much rust since returning from a long-term groin injury, but others have elevated their game. 2. LaMarcus Aldridge (33), San Antonio Spurs Previous rank: 2 Latest stats: 7 games, 24.4 ppg, 11.6 rpg, 2.6 apg Season stats: 21.1 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 2.5 apg If not for James' triple-double on Thursday (Friday, PHL time), Aldridge would've claimed the throne. That's what happens when you grab double-doubles in five of the last seven, and go for 30-9 and 22-9 in the other two. In fact, over his last 10 games, he's only had one subpar performance (13 points and five rebounds on Jan. 24, PHL time). 3. Lou Williams (32), LA Clippers Previous rank: 3 Latest stats: 8 games, 23.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 6.9 apg Season stats: 19.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 5.2 apg We didn't forget. Williams started the stint with his first career triple-double. If that wasn't enough, he poured in a career-high 39 four games later. If that wasn't enough, he added 31 two games after that. Despite closing out the period with a relative stinker (10 points in 17 minutes), Williams is averaging 24.5 in February after 20.4 in January. 4. Marc Gasol (34), Toronto Raptors Previous rank: 5 Latest stats: 6 games, 18.0 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 3.7 apg Season stats: 15.7 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 4.7 apg It was another mixed bag for Gasol, who managed two games of 24 or more, two games of 18-19 points and two games between 8-11 points. We fully expect Gasol to step up now that he's playing on a team in the Raptors with serious title aspirations, as he should be able to integrate nicely with both the offense and defense. 5. Rudy Gay (32), San Antonio Spurs Previous rank: 8 Latest stats: 8 games, 16.5 ppg, 6.0 rpg, 3.1 apg Season stats: 14.4 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 2.5 apg Shooting 50.5 from the field and 52.2 from beyond the arc, Gay turned in six games of 15 or more points. He's now managed to score in double figures in 12 straight while shooting better than 50 percent in eight of those contests. No wonder he's shooting a career-best 52.2 percent from the field. 6. J.J. Redick (34), Philadelphia 76ers Previous rank: 4 Latest stats: 3 games, 16.7 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 2.7 apg Season stats: 18.3 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.8 apg A small sample size is the reason for Redick's slip, as he failed to make any big impressions in his three games. He did, however, shoot 42.3 from deep (11-for-26) while scoring 13 or more in all three. But he'll need to pocket more 20-point games if he hopes to climb back to where he was. 7. Kyle Lowry (32), Toronto Raptors Previous rank: 6 Latest stats: 5 games, 14.2 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 8.4 apg Season stats: 14.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 9.3 apg In three wins, Lowry averaged 17.3 points and 9.3 assists. In two losses, he averaged 9.5 points and 7.0 assists. But the shooting remains a big issue. Lowry's 40.6 FG% is his lowest since 2012-13 (40.1) and his 32.5 3PT% is his lowest since '09-10 (27.2). On a positive, Lowry's 9.3 assists per game easily rise to a career-best mark. 8. Jeff Green (32), Washington Wizards Previous rank: Just missed Latest stats: 7 games, 19.9 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 3.1 apg Season stats: 12.6 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 1.9 apg Shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 42.3 from three-point range, Green went for 20 or more points in five of seven games, including four straight -- his longest such stretch all season. Green's stellar run has been boosted by increased playing time; he's averaging 35.7 minutes in three February games after averaging 30.5 minutes in 14 January games. 9. Chris Paul (33), Houston Rockets Previous rank: NA Latest stats: 5 games, 15.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 7.2 apg Season stats: 15.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 7.9 apg Paul finally returned to action Jan. 27 (Jan. 28, PHl time) after missing 17 games with a hamstring injury. He's managed to turn in five straight double-figure scoring games to go along with six or more assists in four of the games. There's a little rust, but we like what we see, especially the 2.4 steals and 47.2 FG% during the span. 10.  Al Horford (32), Boston Celtics Previous rank: 10 Latest stats: 7 games, 14.6 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 5.1 apg Season stats: 12.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 3.8 apg Horford started the stint on fire, turning in back-to-back double-doubles for the first time this season. Yes, you read that right. In addition to the double-doubles, he shot 60.3 percent from the field and 2.3 blocks, including a season-best six blocks in last Monday's win over the Nets. Just missed the cut: Rajon Rondo, Dwyane Wade, Trevor Ariza, Marco Belinelli The views on this page do not necessarily reflect the views of the NBA, its clubs or Turner Broadcasting......»»

Lazio beats Inter on penalties to reach Italian Cup semis

By Daniella Matar, Associated Press MILAN (AP) — Lazio beat Inter Milan on penalties in the Italian Cup quarterfinals on Thursday, a result that will do little to dispel reports that Antonio Conte is in talks to become the next Nerazzurri coach. Lautaro Martinez and Radja Nainggolan had spot kicks saved as Lazio won 4-3 on penalties after the match ended 1-1 following Mauro Icardi's stoppage-time equalizer. Lazio will next play AC Milan. Atalanta faces Fiorentina in the other two-legged semifinal. It is the third successive year Lazio has reached the semifinals. It lost to Milan on penalties last season, while it beat Roma in 2017 but lost the final to Juventus. "If there was a team that should've won, it was Lazio," Immobile said. "We deserved it, then there was that penalty incident which forced us to postpone our celebrations. ... Now we hope to get our revenge on Milan." Inter goalkeeper Samir Handanovic pulled off a number of great saves to keep his side in the match but was surprised when Immobile's shot was deflected past him in the 108th minute after the Lazio forward had played a smart one-two with Felipe Caicedo. Matters almost went from bad to worse for Inter as defender Kwadwo Asamoah was shown a red card for a tackle on Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. However, the referee downgraded it to a yellow on video review. VAR came to Inter's assistance again when it was used to award a penalty for a Milinkovic-Savic foul on Danilo D'Ambrosio, after the referee had initially awarded a free kick. Lazio defender Stefan Radu was sent off for dissent and Icardi kept his cool under immense pressure to convert the penalty with the last kick of extra time. He also netted another penalty in the shootout, as did Marcelo Brozovic and debutant Cedric Soares for Inter. Handanovic saved from Riza Durmisi but Immobile, Marco Parolo and Francesco Acerbi were successful from the spot and Lucas Leiva converted the decisive penalty. It was Inter's third successive defeat and will pile the pressure on coach Luciano Spalletti. Earlier on Thursday, Conte was spotted walking past the Inter offices in the center of Milan. The former Juventus and Italy coach has been out of a job since being fired by Chelsea and he refused to respond to questions if he was in contact with Inter......»»

Juve out of cup, Roma s Dzeko sent off after ref incident

By Daniella Matar, Associated Press MILAN (AP) — Four-time defending champion Juventus lost in the Italian Cup quarterfinals on Wednesday, while Roma lost 7-1 at Fiorentina and had forward Edin Dzeko sent off after appearing to spit at the referee. Juventus is on course for a record-extending eighth successive Serie A title and had won the league and cup double in the past four seasons, but it surprisingly lost 3-0 at Atalanta. Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri was also sent to the stands for dissent shortly before halftime after throwing his coat to the floor in anger at something in the buildup to Atalanta's second goal. "It was right to send me off, I was losing my temper and the refereeing was impeccable during the whole match," Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri said. "Compliments to the referee. At that moment I paid for my anger. The lads are feeling low, but now we'll grit our teeth. These matches can happen. There's nothing to blame the guys for, especially given what they've done up until now." Fiorentina will play Atalanta in the two-legged semifinal. The other match pits AC Milan against either city rival Inter Milan or Lazio, which face each other on Thursday. Atalanta had not beaten Juventus since a 2-0 victory in the Italian Cup in 2004, with five draws and 21 defeats in all competitions since that victory. Both teams lost key players to injury in the 27th minute, as Josip Ilicic and Giorgio Chiellini limped off. Ten minutes later Chiellini's replacement, Joao Cancelo, was caught in possession by Timothy Castagne, who sprinted forward and smashed it into the far bottom corner to give Atalanta the lead. Duvan Zapata doubled Atalanta's lead two minutes later with his 16th goal in his past 10 games. The Bianconeri tried to fight back after the break but couldn't find a way past a determined Atalanta performance and Zapata sealed the result with his second of the match four minutes from time. DREAM FOR CHIESA, NIGHTMARE FOR DZEKO Fiorentina forward Federico Chiesa scored his first career hat trick against Roma, which was already 4-1 down when Dzeko was shown a straight red card in the 72nd minute after arguing with referee Gianluca Manganiello and then appearing to spit at him. Dzeko could be facing a lengthy ban if Manganiello confirms he was spit at in his official match report. Roma has struggled this campaign after selling the backbone of its squad in the offseason, but had won four of its past five matches. However, it started badly and Chiesa netted twice in the opening 18 minutes and also hit the post. Aleksandar Kolarov got one back for Roma in the 28th but Luis Muriel restored Fiorentina's two-goal advantage shortly after. Roma was better at the start of the second half but its defense let it down again and Marco Benassi extended Fiorentina's tally before Dzeko lost his head. Chiesa completed his hat trick in the 74th before going off minutes later to a standing ovation. There was still time for substitute Giovanni Simeone to score twice. It was the first time Roma had conceded six goals or more in an Italian Cup match since May 1961, also against Fiorentina. However, Roma coach Eusebio Di Francesco said he will not resign. "In my head there is never that thought," he said......»»

Popovich ties Riley for road wins; Spurs beat Wolves 116-113

By BRIAN HALL,  Associated Press MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 points, Rudy Gay added 22 and the San Antonio Spurs held on to give coach Gregg Popovich another milestone victory in a 116-113 win against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). The win was the 520th on the road in Popovich's career, tying him with Pat Riley for the most in NBA history. It also continued San Antonio's mastery of Minnesota. The Spurs have won 16 of the past 18 games between the teams. Marco Belinelli added 19 points off the bench for San Antonio, which was playing without leading scorer DeMar DeRozan because of left ankle soreness. Karl-Anthony Towns had 23 points for the Timberwolves, but was limited to 21 minutes because of foul trouble. Derrick Rose chipped in 23 points and Taj Gibson added 14 points and 11 rebounds. Minnesota lost for the third time in four games. Another matchup between the familiar foes was tight throughout, with 27 lead changes and 17 ties. It also featured a heavy dose of fouls on both sides. The teams combined for 53 personal fouls and 67 free throws. Towns played only 6:13 in a scoreless first quarter, but Minnesota's bench helped make up for his absence. Towns re-entered and had 14 points in the second. He picked up his fourth foul less than two minutes into the second half, and again went to the bench. Josh Okogie had six points and Jeff Teague added five as Minnesota used a 14-1 run to take a 77-67 lead. The Spurs responded with a 13-2 spurt of their own as Davis Bertans hit a pair of 3-pointers. The Wolves led 90-88 to start the fourth, but Bertans opened the quarter with another 3. San Antonio led by seven in the fourth, but Minnesota clawed back to within one with 30.3 seconds left on Rose's layup. Belinelli hit two free throws and Rose's 3 at the buzzer was off the mark. TIP-INS Spurs: Popovich is third in NBA history with 1,224 wins overall. He passed Jerry Sloan for third place on Jan. 10. . San Antonio entered 4-17 this season when trailing after three quarters. Timberwolves: Tyus Jones missed the game with a left ankle sprain sustained Tuesday at Philadelphia. Robert Covington missed his eighth straight game with a right knee bone bruise. . Andrew Wiggins passed Sam Mitchell (7,161) for second place on the franchise's career scoring list. Wiggins has 7,174 points. Kevin Garnett is first with 19,201 points in a Wolves uniform. . After scoring his 10,000th career point on Tuesday, Rose got his 3,000th assist on Friday. . Minnesota announced that Jerry Sichting was hired as an assistant coach. It is Sichting's third stint with the Wolves. He spent 10 years with the team from 1995-2005 and two seasons from 2007-09. UP NEXT Spurs: Return home against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday. Spurs rally from 19 down, beat Mavs 105-101

By Dave Jackson, Associated Press DALLAS (AP) — Davis Bertans hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:41 left, and the San Antonio Spurs rallied from a 19-point first-half deficit to beat the Dallas Mavericks 105-101 on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time). The Spurs blew a six-point lead in the final period, but Bertans made his third three-pointer of the quarter for a 99-96 lead and San Antonio led the rest of the way. Bertans finished with 12 points. Six Spurs scored at least 12 points, led by Marco Belinelli's 17. After Bertans' triple, LaMarcus Aldridge scored on a tip shot with 1:07 left to extend the lead to five. Wesley Matthews' three brought Dallas within two, but DeMar DeRozan hit a 20-footer at the other end and Belinelli sealed it with free throws. Luka Doncic led Dallas with 25 points, adding eight rebounds and eight assists. He became the first rookie since Stephen Curry in 2010 to score 25 or more points in five straight games. After trailing by 19 during the first half, San Antonio tied it at 80 on Belinelli's driving layup with 11:06 to play. DeRozan gave the Spurs their first lead 27 seconds later, setting up a three-minute stretch in which the lead changed hands seven times. DeRozan hit back-to-back mid-range jumpers for a 94-90 lead, and he fed Aldridge for a dunk that extended the Spurs' advantage to six. Doncic answered with two baskets and an alley-oop pass to DeAndre Jordan that tied it. Doncic's most impressive stretch came in the middle of the third quarter. Trailing by double digits from the opening minutes of the game, the Spurs opened the second half on a 12-6 run to get within 62-57. Doncic then almost single-handedly kept Dallas in the lead for the rest of the quarter, scoring or assisting on the Mavs' next 12 points to help Dallas maintain a five-point lead going into the fourth. Dallas has lost five of seven, and three of its last four at home after losing only three of its first 18 at American Airlines Center. The Mavericks are also 0-6 in games without J.J. Barea, who is out for the season after Achilles tendon surgery. The Mavericks led 23-4 early and made seven three-pointers in the first quarter. San Antonio closed within 56-45 at halftime by ending the half on a 17-9 run. SMITH OUT AGAIN Mavericks guard Dennis Smith Jr. missed his fourth consecutive game amid trade rumors, this time with coach Rick Carlisle saying Smith was sick and away from the arena. Smith missed the previous three games with what was listed as back tightness. Told of a Twitter exchange between Smith and a couple in a restaurant at lunch earlier in the day, Carlisle said, "I don't have any knowledge of that. My trainer told me he was sick and he's going to be out tonight. I've told you what I'm going to tell you about it." TIP-INS Spurs: Rudy Gay returned to the starting lineup after missing the last five games with a sprained left wrist, scoring 14 points. Belinelli came back after missing one game with a left knee contusion. Mavericks: The team sold out its 700th consecutive regular-season game, dating to Dec. 15, 2001. ... Matthews became the sixth player in Mavericks history to make 600 three-pointers when he drained one at 9:06 of the first quarter. UP NEXT Spurs: At Minnesota on Friday (Saturday, PHL time). Mavericks: At Indiana on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time)......»»
