MPBL: Davao wins fourth straight, spoils Binan s last home game

BIÑAN -- South top seed Davao Occidental-Cocolife spoiled Biñan-Luxxe White's last home game this 2019-20 Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Season, 72-66, Thursday night at the Alonte Sports Arena here. June Mocon registered 15 points -- all from the three-point area -- on top of three rebounds and a steal as the Tigers upped their standings to 25-4, picking up their fourth straight win. Chester Saldua followed suit with 12 markers and seven boards while Marco Balagtas and Emman Calo connived for 21 points. "Biñan's second group played really well. I tip my hats off to them, they really played well," said Davao coach Don Dulay. Jed Mendoza's freebies at the 1:42 mark of the payoff period trimmed the Heroes' deficit to just four, but they missed all but one of their remaining shots. Trailing 47-29 midway through the third period, Biñan launched a fiery comeback, ending the quarter on a 14-1 burst, to cut the deficit to just five, 43-48. Mendoza led Biñan with 18 points, six boards, and six dimes, while Kyle Neypes and James Castañares chipped in eight markers apiece. The Heroes concluded the season at 10th place in the Southern division behind a 12-18 slate. In the earlier contest, Bacoor City trooped back to its winning ways, toppling Iloilo United, 79-68. The Strikers ended the elimination round at second place in the Southern division at 24-6 while the Royals slipped to fifth place in the same conference behind an 18-12 card. "Our players could have easily said that we have number two locked in so we could have an easy night off but there are no nights off to build championship habits," said Bacoor coach Chris Gavina. Mark Pangilinan spearheaded the Strikers with 16 points on 4-of-6 shooting from deep while Michael Mabulac tallied a double-double of 10 markers and 10 boards. Gab Banal also contributed 11 points while Ian Melencio added eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Leading by just three in the payoff period, Banal and Melencio connected on back-to-back triples from the top of the arc to give Bacoor the lead for good, 77-68 at the 1:06 mark. Al Tamsi paced Iloilo with 18 points, four rebounds, and three dimes while Richard Escoto and Aaron Jeruta combined for 25 markers. In the first game, Jeckster Apinan went berserk in overtime to lift Makati-Super Crunch over GenSan-Burlington 91-90. Apinan buried the buzzer-beating layin off the dish of Cedric Ablaza to give Makati the much-needed victory after losing four of their last five games. The Jose Rizal University product scored 10 of the 12 Super Crunch points in overtime and ended with monster numbers of 29 points on a 9-of-14 clip, 13 rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block. "Jeckster is one of the leaders of the team. He's been a very good offensive and defensive player. A good attitude on and off the court," head coach Beaujing Acot said. On the other hand, Mikey Williams scored all of the Warriors' 11 markers in extra period to finish with 21 points and seven assists. Tied at 79, Jong Baloria and Cristopher Masaglang exchanged sorry misses to send the game to overtime. Ablaza added 21 points, seven boards, three dimes, two steals and two blocks for Makati while Baloria had 12 markers. Robby Celiz came through for GenSan with 13 points, 17 rebounds, five assists, and three blocks while Pamboy Raymundo just missed triple-double with 13 markers, 10 assists, and nine boards. Makati improved its win-loss record to 22-8, snapping its two-game slump while the Warriors slipped to 16-12, leaving the window open for Cebu-Casino Ethyl Alcohol to enter the post-season. DeRozan scores 25, Spurs rally from 18 down, beat Raptors

By Ian Harrison, Associated Press TORONTO (AP) — DeMar DeRozan scored 25 points, Rudy Gay had 15 and the San Antonio Spurs rallied from an 18-point deficit to beat the Toronto Raptors 105-104 on Sunday (Monday, PHL time). San Antonio used a big fourth quarter to win for the third time in four games. Derrick White scored 13 points for the Spurs, and LaMarcus Aldridge had 11. DeRozan also collected eight rebounds and four assists while topping 20 points for the 11th straight game. San Antonio trailed 82-69 to begin the fourth but opened the quarter with a 19-5 run, taking an 88-87 lead on Aldridge’s layup with 6:34 to play. The Spurs led 100-91 with 2:37 left, but Kyle Lowry, Norman Powell and Serge Ibaka each made 3-pointers as Toronto tied it 100-100 on Ibaka’s shot from distance with 1:17 left. Siakam broke the tie by making the second of two free throws with 41 seconds left, but Marco Belinelli replied with a 3 for the Spurs, making it 103-101 with 28 seconds remaining. After a Toronto timeout, Siakam missed a shot that would have tied the game. San Antonio’s Lonnie Walker IV grabbed the rebound, Lowry fouled DeRozan, and the former Raptors star pushed the lead to four points by making a pair from the line. Lowry replied with a deep 3, cutting the deficit to one, and Aldridge missed a pair of free throws with four seconds left, but Siakam’s long 3-pointer bounced off the backboard at the buzzer. DeRozan missed his first three free throws but made 11 straight the rest of the way. He didn’t score until 1:25 remained in the first half and attempted just three shots in the first two quarters, but made six of nine attempts in the second half. Ibaka had 21 points and a season-high 15 rebounds, and Lowry had 16 points and a season-high 15 assists for the Raptors. Ibaka’s double-double was his career-best eighth straight. He’s the third Toronto player to achieve the feat. Chris Bosh did it five times and Donyell Marshall did it once. San Antonio’s comeback spoiled the returns of Siakam and Powell, each of whom had missed 11 games since a Dec. 18 (Dec. 19, PHL time) win at Detroit. Powell scored 20 points and Siakam had 15, including 12 in the first quarter. FAMILY FIRST While battling San Antonio’s Bryn Forbes for a loose ball in the third, Lowry landed heavily on Toronto’s baseline, just in front of where his family was seated. Lowry got up and gave his son a kiss on the cheek, then returned to the court. TIP-INS Spurs: Playing in Toronto as a visitor for only the second time, DeRozan received loud applause when he was introduced before the game. Fans rose for a standing ovation when DeRozan was honored with a tribute video during a first-quarter timeout, part of Toronto’s 25th anniversary celebration. Raptors: Toronto is still without center Marc Gasol, who has also been out since Dec. 18 (Dec. 19, PHL time), and guard Fred VanVleet, who sat for the third straight because of a strained right hamstring. UP NEXT Spurs: Visit the Miami Heat on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time). Raptors: Visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time)......»»

Aldridge leads sharp-shooting Spurs past Grizzlies, 145-115

By Clay Bailey, Associated Press MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — LaMarcus Aldridge scored a season-high 40 points, DeMar DeRozan added 26 points and 10 assists, and the San Antonio Spurs shot 67% from the field in a 145-115 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night (Tuesday, PHL time). Trey Lyles finished with 17 points and Dejounte Murray scored 14 for the Spurs. The point total and shooting percentage were season-bests for San Antonio. Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 22 points for Memphis, while rookie Ja Morant finished with 19. Jonas Valanciunas had 18 points and 12 rebounds as Memphis lost for the third time in the last four. The Spurs were uncanny in their shooting accuracy from the start, connecting at 79% in the first quarter — and that included missing their final two shots in the period. The 46 points by the Spurs in the first were the most ever surrendered by the Grizzlies in a quarter. The Spurs would build the lead to 19 in the half as Aldridge had 28 points, converting 12 of 17 shots. There were occasions in the third quarter where Memphis got the deficit under double digits, and Morant provided a couple of highlight dunks. But the Spurs maintained a comfortable advantage through three quarters. San Antonio was still shooting 66% at that point. The San Antonio lead would reach 23 in the fourth before both teams emptied their benches. TIP-INS Spurs: Hit 19 of their first 22 shots. The streak of made baskets went so long that once Aldridge missed a shot late in the first quarter, it drew a loud cheer from the Memphis faithful. … Aldridge reached at least 30 points for the fourth time this season. … Marco Belinelli had 10 points. Grizzlies: Valanciunas returned to the starting lineup after missing Saturday’s (Sunday, PHL time) game against Sacramento with right foot soreness. He recorded his 16th double-double. …The 145 points given up by Memphis were the most this season. The previous high was 138 by Dallas on Nov. 9 (Nov. 10, PHL time). UP NEXT Spurs: Travel to Dallas to play the Mavericks on Thursday (Friday, PHL time). Grizzlies: Play at Oklahoma City on Thursday (Friday, PHL time)......»»

Giannis gets 3rd triple-double, Bucks rout Knicks 123-102

By The Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 22 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in his third triple-double of the season, and the Milwaukee Bucks followed their big victory over the Lakers by routing the New York Knicks 123-102 on Saturday night (Sunday, PHL time). Avoiding any letdown two nights after winning a showdown against Los Angeles for the NBA's best record, the Bucks (26-4) made their first six 3-pointers and opened a big early lead that grew to 29 points. Antetokounmpo had secured his triple-double by midway through the third quarter after playing just 23 minutes. Khris Middleton scored 23 points and Kyle Korver had 17 for the Bucks, who are playing without starters Wesley Matthews and Eric Bledsoe because of right leg injuries. They didn't miss them at all. Julius Randle had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Knicks, who lost for the second straight night. ROCKETS 139, SUNS 125 PHOENIX (AP) — James Harden scored 47 points, Russell Westbrook added 30 and Houston beat Phoenix. The Rockets won for the 10th time in 13 games and improved to 20-9. Harden shot 15 of 27 from the field, including 9 of 19 from 3-point range. He leads the NBA with 38.5 points per game and blew past that number with his fourth quarter outburst, hitting his quartet of 3s in a span of about three minutes. Westbrook added 10 assists, and Clint Capela had 14 points and 17 rebounds. The Suns have lost six straight games and fell to 11-18. Kelly Oubre Jr. led Phoenix with 26 points, and Devin Booker had 19. Ben Simmons had 14 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for the 76ers, who snapped a three-game losing streak overall and a two-game skid at home. Bradley Beal had 36 points, eight rebounds and six assists for the Wizards. Washington has lost three in a row and nine of 11. Isaiah Thomas added 20 points, but was ejected with 2:53 remaining for going into the stands. Philadelphia suffered its first two home losses in its last two times out, Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) against Miami and Friday (Saturday, PHL time) versus Dallas. Both teams used zone defenses that neutralized Philadelphia’s offense. CLIPPERS 134, SPURS 109 SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Kawhi Leonard had 26 points, nine assists and seven rebounds in three quarters and won in San Antonio for the first time since leaving the franchise. Leonard was 11 for 16 from the field with four steals and two turnovers in setting a hurried pace the Spurs were unable to match. Los Angeles had six players in double figures, including 21 by Montrezl Harrell and 20 by Lou Williams. Paul George finished with 11 points. DeMar DeRozan, who had 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting in the first quarter, finished with 24 points to lead San Antonio. Marco Belinelli added 17 points. BULLS 119, PISTONS 107 DETROIT (AP) — Zach LaVine scored 33 points and Coby White added 19 to help Chicago outlast short-handed Detroit. The Pistons were without Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose, and the Bulls pulled away late thanks to LaVine's outside shooting. He and White made five 3-pointers apiece. Detroit has lost four straight. Andre Drummond had 19 points and 14 rebounds for the Pistons, who swept the season series against Chicago in 2018-19 but have lost the first three meetings with the Bulls this season. Griffin has been dealing with an illness, and Rose missed the game with left knee soreness. TRAIL BLAZERS 113, TIMBERWOLVES 106 PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Damian Lillard scored 29 points, Hassan Whiteside had 16 points, 22 rebounds and seven blocks, and Portland defeated Minnesota. Andrew Wiggins scored a game-high 33 points for Minnesota. Coutinho stars as Bayern bounces back to rout Bremen 6-1

By Ciaran Fahey, Associated Press BERLIN (AP) — Philippe Coutinho has finally lived up to Bayern Munich's high hopes for the Brazil playmaker. Coutinho scored a hat trick and set up two more goals to help Bayern end its two-game losing run in the Bundesliga with a 6-1 rout of Werder Bremen on Saturday. "That was his game," said fellow goal-scorer Robert Lewandowski, who grabbed two. Substitute Thomas Müller scored the other goal as Bayern bounced back from successive 2-1 defeats to Borussia Mönchengladbach and Bayer Leverkusen. Bremen's visit came just at the right time for the seven-time defending champion. Bremen had lost its previous 20 competitive games against Bayern, 17 in the league and three in the German Cup. Coutinho gave a demonstration of what Bayern had been expecting when it signed him on loan with a purchase option for 120 million euros ($133 million) from Barcelona in the offseason. "It was fun for everyone who was in the stadium," Bayern coach Hansi Flick said of the 27-year-old Coutinho. "The team was delighted for him, that he produced such a performance on the pitch. Three goals scored, two made – that was simply class!" However, Florian Kohfeldt's team gave Bayern a scare when Milot Rashica rifled a shot from outside the penalty area past Manuel Neuer to open the scoring in the 24th minute. Jiri Pavlenka denied Lewandowski in the 40th, when the Poland star only had the goalkeeper to beat, and then saved Coutinho's effort from the rebound. But the Bremen 'keeper was beaten twice before the break. Serge Gnabry gave Coutinho a tap-in in the 45th and the Brazilian set up Lewandowski to break his two-game scoring drought in first-half injury time. Lewandowski had scored in the first 12 games of the season, a record, before an unexpected dry spell. Coutinho's second goal in the 63rd all but sealed the win, but the goals kept coming with Lewandowski grabbing his second in the 72nd, Coutinho setting up Müller in the 75th and completing his hat trick in the 78th. "Today it was important to get the points to move back up the table," Coutinho said. Bayern moved up to fourth with the win. The Brazilian came off to enthusiastic applause in the 82nd for New Zealand's Sarpreet Singh, who came on for his Bayern debut. LEIPZIG TOP Leipzig went top with a 3-0 win at Fortuna Düsseldorf in the visitors' sixth consecutive win. Patrik Schick opened the scoring early, Timo Werner added a penalty and Nordi Mukiele completed the scoring as Leipzig moved two points clear of Gladbach, which can reclaim the lead with a win at Wolfsburg on Sunday. KLINSMANN'S 1ST WIN Jürgen Klinsmann claimed his first win in charge of Hertha Berlin thanks to Vladimir Darida's rocket inside the left post for a 1-0 home victory over high-flying Freiburg. Darida let fly from outside the penalty area to decide a lackluster game in the 53rd. It was Hertha's first win in six league games. "It was hugely important for the team," Klinsmann said. "The heads will be a little lighter." Goals from Marco Reus, Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard and Nico Schulz gave third-place Borussia Dortmund a 4-0 win in Mainz — its fourth consecutive win since its Champions League loss in Barcelona. Cologne defeated nine-man Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 in the Rhine derby and Union Berlin was held to a 1-1 draw at Paderborn......»»
