PVL: Cool Smashers seek payback on Angels

Defending champion Creamline gets a chance to exact revenge at Reinforced Conference championship tormentor PetroGazz in an explosive duel of powerhouse teams on Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference. Expect fireworks inside the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan when the unbeaten Cool Smashers and the Angels troop on the court for their 6:00 p.m. encounter that will air live on LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, iWant and via livestream. Led by do-it-all imports Wilma Salas and Janisa Johnson, PetroGazz dethroned Creamline in a hard-fought best-of-three Finals series that went the full distance. But the Cool Smashers have shown that they have already moved on from that setback as they swept their first four matches in the season-ending tournament including emphatic straight set victories over Air Force, Motolite and Chef’s Classic. Creamline is coming off a four-set win over BanKo on Wednesday with Alyssa Valdez scoring 26 points with significant contributions coming from Risa Sato, Jema Galanza and Michele Gumabao. Unlike the Cool Smashers, PetroGazz had a shaky start after opening its campaign with a four-set loss to BanKo before bouncing back against BaliPure last week. The Angels will need the A-game and collective effort of the whole team led by Paneng Mercado, Jeanette Panaga, Jovielyn Prado, Jonah sabete and Cherry Nunag to measure up with Creamline.       --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

PVL: Cool Smashers keep unbeaten slate intact

Defending champion Creamline recovered from a third set meltdown as the Cool Smashers grabbed their fourth straight victory, 25-10, 25-19, 17-25, 25-23, over BanKo on Wednesday to remain undefeated in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Alyssa Valdez led four Creamline players in double figures with 26 points built on 18 kills, six service aces and two kill blocks. The Cool Smashers kept a tight grip of the solo lead after a hard-fought game that started two hours late after the first two games in the triple-bill playdate went into five sets.   “We have a lot of histories with Banko every time since the first season, lagi kaming nagtatapat sa semis tapos maglalaglagan kami. I guess kilala na namin isa’t isa, yung mga tendencies, capabilites, abilities, more than the skills,” said Valdez, who added 15 digs. “May puso talaga [ang BanKo]. They play with heart, mahirap talunin ang ganung klaseng team,” she added. Jema Galanza posted 16 points, Michele Gumabao got 12 while Risa Sato chipped in 11 markers for Creamline, which pounded 54 attack points behind Jia Morado’s 22 excellent sets. The Cool Smashers had a chance to close the match in the third set when they built an 11-3 lead before the Perlas Spikers got their momentum back, sparking a 10-0 assault to take a 13-11 advantage on their way to handing Creamline its first set loss of the conference. The Cool Smashers again got a scare from BanKo early in the fourth set before tying the frame at 14. The two squads engaged in a seesaw battle with Perlas Spikers veteran Sue Roces tying it at 21. Creamline answered with three straight points to move at match point before BanKo threatened to extend the set with the Cool Smashers committing consecutive errors, 23-24. Gumabao ended the match with a kill block on Nicole Tiamzon.          Dzi Gervacio led the Perlas Spikers, who fell to 2-2 slate, with 16 points with all but one coming off spikes while Kathy Bersola and Tiamzon had 13 and 10, respectively.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

PVL: Cool Smashers manhandle Red Spikers, win third in a row

Still flawless. Defending champion Creamline annihilated hapless newcomer Chef’s Classics, 25-12, 25-5, 25-15, on Sunday to remain unscathed in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Alyssa Valdez showed her steady service game in a long trip at the service line while Jema Galanza had a field day picking her attacks against the Red Spikers' brittle defense to power the Cool Smashers to their third straight victory in as many games without dropping a single set. The Creamline kept a tight hold of the solo lead.   Valdez had 16 points off 8-of-12 attacks, seven aces and a kill block for the Cool Smashers, who finished the game in just 66 minutes. Galanza had 11 markers with all but one off spikes and added four excellent receptions while Michele Gumabao and Celine Domingo posted 10 and seven points, respectively, while combining for seven of Creamline's 11 kill blocks.   “In today’s game, this is the first game din na nakalaban namin Chef’s Classics yung mystery on how to play against them nandoon kami,” said Valdez. “Kasi every time, parang most of the teams na nakalaban namin laging first game nila except Chef’s Classics kasi they had a game yesterday.” “Mas nakapag-aral din kami at mas napaghandaan namin, napanood din namin game nila kahapon so mentally we’re also prepared,” she added. “Nangibabaw mental toughness na tapusin yung game.” Creamline head coach Tai Bundit had the luxury of trying new rotations as the Cool Smashers displayed a volleyball clinic in their short work of Chef’s Classics. Creamline cruised in the third frame much like in their emphatic demolition of the newbie squad in the first two sets. The Cool Smashers started their beat down early with Valdez having a long stay at the service line as Creamline built a 16-1 separation before Jingay Bangad stopped the Red Spikers’ bleeding with a hit. Chef’s Classics was able to reach double-figure output before Galanza closed the frame with a kill block       Valdez continued her long stay at the service line in the second frame, this time serving 20 times in a row as the Cool Smashers opened a 19-1 gap before Nieza Viray gave the Red Spikers a respite with a tip. Chef’s Classics scored two attacks, a kill block and two free points off Creamline’s errors in the Red Spikers’ forgettable second set outing.     Chef’s Classics absorbed its second straight defeat after suffering a sweep at the hands of Motolite on Saturday. Viray scored seven points while Bangad got five markers for the Red Spikers.    --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Dortmund starts Bundesliga campaign with 5-1 win v Augsburg

By Ciaran Fahey, Associated Press BERLIN (AP) — Borussia Dortmund began its bid to wrench the Bundesliga title from Bayern Munich with a 5-1 rout of Augsburg on Saturday. Encouraged by Bayern's 2-2 draw with Hertha Berlin in the league opener on Friday, Dortmund was keen to deliver a statement to the seven-time defending champion. But Dortmund was still settling into the game with Mats Hummels back in defense when Florian Niederlechner scored in the first minute for the visitors. Hummels, back after a successful three years in Munich, was among those badly positioned to deal with Nils Pedersen's cross for Niederlechner. Paco Alcacer was in the right place to reply two minutes later, prodding the ball home after Augsburg goalkeeper Tomas Koubek's foot deflected Marco Reus' cross into his path. Reus drew a good save from Koubek as Dortmund pushed for more, but the hosts had to wait till the 51st for Jadon Sancho to break the deadlock. Sancho shot beyond the flailing Koubek after Augsburg's defense failed to deal with Axel Witsel on the left. Alcacer set up Reus for 3-1, two minutes before the Spain striker fired inside the right corner for his second. Witsel crossed for substitute Julian Brandt to complete the scoring in the 82nd and mark his Dortmund debut with a goal. "We were surprised early on, but we stayed calm," Dortmund coach Lucien Favre said. "We were better after that with 78% ball possession. We increased the tempo even more in the second half." LEVERKUSEN DRAMA Bayer Leverkusen defeated promoted Paderborn 3-2 but the home side was fortunate not to have Wendell sent off in the first half when he used his hands to save Sven Michel's goal-bound strike before the line. Play continued and Streli Mamba converted the rebound to level for 2-2 in the 25th. Wendell was then shown a yellow card when a red card and penalty would have been more beneficial to Paderborn with 65 minutes of the game remaining. Kevin Volland claimed Leverkusen's winner in the 69th. Cologne also lost on its return in a 2-1 defeat at Wolfsburg. BREMEN PARTY SPOILED Werder Bremen overtook Hamburger SV with the most appearances in the Bundesliga as it played its 1,867th game in Germany's top flight. But Fortuna Düsseldorf was in no mood to join in the home side's celebrations and took advantage of defensive mistakes to win 3-1. It was Düsseldorf's first win in Bremen since 1977. Freiburg scored three late goals in a 3-0 win over Mainz. NEW FACES Borussia Mönchengladbach coach Marco Rose and Schalke counterpart David Wagner each had to be content with a point from their Bundesliga coaching debuts in an error-strewn 0-0 draw in the late game. Altogether, eight coaches were to take or had taken charge of their first Bundesliga games over the weekend. Union Berlin coach Urs Fischer - like the club - was to make his league debut against Leipzig on Sunday......»»

PVL: Cool Smashers snatch back-to-back wins

Defending champion Creamline displayed its firepower anew as the Cool Smashers spoiled the debut of Motolite, 25-14, 25-15, 25-14, on Wednesday for their second straight win in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Veterans Michele Gumabao and Alyssa Valdez picked up from where they left off as they paced Creamline in its clinical beating of Motolite to climb at solo top spot. PVL: Cool Smashers eye back-to-back wins

Alyssa Valdez and the rest of defending champion Creamline brace for a tough battle against Motolite on Wednesday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. The Cool Smashers cruised past returning Philippine Air Force in straight sets last Sunday. But this time, Creamline knows that Motolite poses a tougher challenge considering the recruitment it did during the preseason when it tapped Fil-American setter Iris Tolenada. “Ako, ang masasabi ko lang. Ang Motolite, mag-iiba siguro ang rotation,” said Valdez. Tolenada, who helped Pocari Sweat alongside Myla Pablo rule the defunct V-League in 2016, will make her long-awaited return in the 4:00 p.m. match that will air live on LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, iWant and via livestream. “It's going to be an interesting game kasi for the longest time, si Iris yung nakikita natin na setter na medyo mas matangkad sa most na setters na nakikita natin. So, it's going to be an interesting match on Wednesday,” said Valdez. The Tolenada-Pablo tandem will be backed by a very young core led by Isa Molde, Tots Carlos, Thang Ponce and Marist Layug all raring to bounce back from a forgettable fifth place finish in the six-team Reinforced Conference. However, the Cool Smashers aside from parading a star-studded lineup will bring in the momentum of their emphatic, 25-23, 25-20, 25-15, win in the conference opener. Michele Gumabao hopes to sustain her fine form after scoring 14 points the last time out along with Valdez, Risa Sato, Jema Galanza and top setter Jia Morado.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles  .....»»

PVL: Cool Smashers begin repeat quest

Creamline jumpstarts its title-retention bid against a comebacking Philippine Air Force side as the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Open Conference gets underway on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan. Bannered by super star hitter Alyssa Valdez and prized setter Jia Morado, the crowd-favorite Cool Smashers begin their road to redemption after surrendering the Reinforced Conference title to PetroGazz almost a month ago. Game time is at 2:00 p.m. and will air live on ABS-CBN S+A Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD SkyCable Channel 183, iWant and via livestream. Creamline will parade the same solid core of veterans Michele Gumabao, Risa Sato, Jema Galanza and libero Mel Gohing. Also back for another tour of duty are young stars Heather Guino-o, Kyle Negrito and Celine Domingo while Fille Cainglet-Cayetano is making a comeback after sitting out the import-laden conference. Although facing a Jet Spikers squad which skipped the previous conference, Valdez knows that Air Force remains a dangerous foe.    “We can’t blink whenever we play against Air Force,” said the three-time Conference Most Valuable Player. “They’re smart, they’re very well-experienced team. In volleyball if you have those experiences mas dumadali ang laro.” The Jet Spikers are back in the fold after sitting out the Reinforced Conference. Air Force will field a battle-hardened crew led by setter Wendy Semana, Joy Cases, May Ann Pantino, Judy Anne Caballejo and middle Dell Palomata.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Bigger tires in store for Formula One

By Jimmy Golen, Associated Press NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — Formula One tires are getting a makeover to make them look more like the ones auto racing fans can buy for their own cars. The circuit will switch to 18-inch tires beginning in the 2021 season, one of a series of changes it is making as it embarks on a new contract with the Italian tire-maker Pirelli that begins next year and runs through 2023. F1 has used 13-inch tires for decades. "The change ... is designed to more closely align Formula 1 tires with street tires, allowing an even greater degree of technology transfer between them," the company said. Other changes where the rubber meets the road: No more heating blankets, narrower front tires and tires that will degrade more slowly, a modification that could drastically affect race and pit stop strategy. Some of the changes were announced by the F1 last year. Pirelli shared more details with The Associated Press this month during an event for the 2021 America's Cup; the company is a sponsor and technology partner with the Italian challenger Luna Rossa. "Formula One is the pinnacle of the technology in motor racing," Marco Crola, the Chairman and CEO of Pirelli North America, told the AP at the New York Yacht Club in Newport before the America's Cup challengers gave an update on their progress. "This one is exactly the same in water sports." Pirelli noted that the bigger tires will have far-reaching effects on the build of the car. The 13-inch models, with their high sidewalls, served as half of the suspension for the car, and the 18-inch ones will create more aerodynamic resistance. "The move to a new size is a significant change for the teams, as it's not just as simple as swapping a 13-inch tire for an 18-inch one," the company said in a statement to the AP. "Plenty of work has to be done to understand the challenges involved." Some details remain to be sorted out when FIA, the Formula One governing body issues its regulations. Pirelli will begin testing the new tires later this summer and through 2020 on the Formula Two circuit......»»
