NBA: Miami s Jones wins slam dunk contest; Hield tops 3-point shootout

CHICAGO (AP) —  Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. celebrated his 23rd birthday by winning the All-Star Slam Dunk Contest, edging Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon in a memorable showdown that required two tiebreaker jams. Jones and Gordon each got a perfect 50 on both of their dunks in the final. Then they got two more perfect scores on their first jam in the dunk-off. Jones then took off from just inside the foul line and threw down a windmill jam with his left hand, drawing a 48 from the panel of five judges. After a short discussion with Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal, Gordon brought out 7-foot-5 Boston Celtics rookie Tacko Fall and positioned him near the basket. He then took the ball from Fall's hands on his way to a thunderous dunk. The United Center gasped as the courtside NBA stars celebrated. But Gordon was awarded a 47, giving the victory to Jones. Gordon also lost a memorable dunk contest to Zach LaVine in 2016. Earlier, Sacramento Kings guard Buddy Hield made a late surge to win the NBA 3-Point Contest. Hield nailed a two-point money ball from the corner to finish with 27 points, edging Phoenix Suns All-Star Devin Booker by one in the final round. Hield is one of the few bright spots for struggling Sacramento, averaging 20.4 points while shooting about 39 percent from 3-point range. Washington's Davis Bertans opened the second and final round with a 22, before Booker eliminated him. Defending champion Joe Harris of the Brooklyn Nets and Chicago's Zach LaVine were eliminated after they failed to crack the top three in the first round. Five racks with five balls each were set up around the perimeter — two in the corner, two on the wings and one up top. Four of those racks had four balls worth one point each plus a multi-colored two-point ball. The other had nothing but moneyballs. There were also two green balls worth three points set up six feet behind the 3-point line......»»

Former champion Dwight Howard leads field in 2020 NBA Slam Dunk Contest

NEW YORK, Feb. 4, 2020 – Former Slam Dunk champion Dwight Howard of the Los Angeles Lakers returns to the competition for the first time in 11 years as he headlines the field of four players who will take flight in the 2020 AT&T Slam Dunk on Saturday, Feb. 15 (Sunday, Feb. 16 in the Philippines) at the United Center in Chicago. Howard is joined by two previous second-place finishers, Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic and Derrick Jones Jr. of the Miami Heat, as well as first-time participant Pat Connaughton of the Milwaukee Bucks. The 35th AT&T Slam Dunk is part of State Farm® All-Star Saturday Night, which also features the Taco Bell® Skills Challenge and the MTN DEW® 3-Point Contest.  All-Star Saturday Night will air live on TNT and ESPN Radio in the United States at 8 p.m. ET.  NBA All-Star 2020 will reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages. Howard, the 2008 Slam Dunk champion, will compete in the event for the first time since 2009, when he made the last of three consecutive appearances.  Gordon’s dazzling runner-up performance in 2016 included three straight perfect scores of 50.  Jones Jr., who turns 23 on the same day as AT&T Slam Dunk, finished second in 2017.  Connaughton is seeking to become the first Milwaukee player to win Slam Dunk.  AT&T Slam Dunk takes in place Chicago for the first time since 1988, when the Chicago Bulls’ Michael Jordan memorably outdueled the Atlanta Hawks’ Dominique Wilkins to win his second consecutive Slam Dunk title. Here is a closer look at the 2020 AT&T Slam Dunk participants: • Pat Connaughton, Bucks (1st appearance): The 6-5 guard is in his second season with Milwaukee after spending his first three NBA seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers.  Connaughton (CONN-uh-ton) recorded a max vertical leap of 44 inches at the 2015 NBA Draft Combine, tied for the third-highest mark in event history.  He was selected as a pitcher by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft. • Aaron Gordon, Magic (3rd appearance): Gordon returns to AT&T Slam Dunk for the first time since 2017.  The 6-9 forward ranks third on the Magic in scoring (13.6 ppg) and second in rebounding (7.2 rpg) in his sixth NBA season. • Dwight Howard, Lakers (4th appearance): Howard is an eight-time NBA All-Star selection, eight-time All-NBA Team selection and three-time Kia NBA Defensive Player of the Year.  The 6-10 center ranks 14th in NBA history in both rebounds (13,553) and blocked shots (2,120). • Derrick Jones Jr., Heat (2nd appearance): As a rookie in the 2016-17 season, Jones became the first player to compete in AT&T Slam Dunk and play in the NBA G League in the same season.  Since then, the undrafted Jones has earned a full-time role in the NBA.  Nicknamed “Airplane Mode” for his leaping ability, the 6-7 Jones won a national dunk contest for high school players in 2015.    2020 AT&T Slam Dunk Rules In the two-round event, participants can perform any dunk they choose.  The players have a maximum of three attempts to complete each dunk in both the first round and the final round.  Five judges score every dunk on a scale of 6 to 10, resulting in a high score of 50 and a low score of 30.  The judges will be announced at a later date. All four competitors get two dunks in the first round.  The two players with the highest combined score for their two dunks advance to the head-to-head final round.  Both players get two dunks in the final round.  The player with the highest combined score for his two dunks in the final round is crowned the 2020 AT&T Slam Dunk champion.  Click here for a complete explanation of the rules.  .....»»

3 key takeaways from ONE: FIRE & FURY

It was another explosive night for ONE Championship as it opened 2020 in the Philippines in the most exciting way possible. On Friday, 31 January, ONE: FIRE & FURY went down in Manila, Philippines with a bang, and the martial arts world was left begging for more action. With another event in the bag, here are three key takeaways from the Mall Of Asia Arena.    Joshua Pacio’s Skills Are Growing At A Blistering Pace Any strawweight who watched Joshua “The Passion” Pacio defend his World Title against Alex “Little Rock” Silva should be concerned, especially with the 24-year-old Filipino closing all the holes in his game.  Pacio looked crisp on the feet as always, but it was his ground game that turned out to be the difference in this match.  The Baguio City native was confident to roll with one of the best grapplers in the organization and, at times, he was even on the offensive, attempting a guillotine choke and a heel hook in the bout.  “Yes I was surprised. We all know the level of Silva’s grappling, so Joshua really surprised me with the confidence that he showed in the bout – he was even the one attacking at times,” Team Lakay coach Mark Sangiao said.  With Pacio picking up confidence on the ground game to compliment his world class striking, the rest of the division looks in trouble.    “Thunder Kid” May Be The Next Big Strawweight Lito “Thunder Kid” Adiwang said in the past that entertaining fans is just as important as winning.  On Friday, he proved it was not just lip-service.  Adiwang was a burning ball of energy and then some as he needed just one round to dispatch Pongsiri “The Smiling Assassin” Mitsatit in the lead card of the night.  The 26-year-old rocked his Thai counterpart early on before raining down heavy ground and pound from the mount. Though Mitsatit survived the initial onslaught, Adiwang still finished the bout in style as he locked on a kimura and forced the submission.    The Lightweight Division Keeps Getting Deeper  Eduard “Landslide” Folayang found out firsthand how difficult his climb back to the pinnacle of the ONE Lightweight division will be after absorbing a razor-thin split decision loss to Pieter “The Archangel” Buist in the co-main event of the evening.  At age 36, Folayang has been adamant in saying he still wants to regain his World Title, and for two rounds he looked good against the bigger Dutchman.  All it took, though, was one well-timed head kick from Buist early in the third to change the direction of the match for good as the Combat Brothers standout turned the bout to his favor and later stole the victory.  Aside from Buist, who targets a showdown with ONE Lightweight World Champion Christian “The Warrior” Lee, the division also boasts top talent like Saygid Guseyn “Dagi”  Arslanaliev, Eddie “The Underground King” Alvarez, Lowen Tynanes, and Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki for starters. .....»»

Team Lakay s Adiwang, Iniong victorious at ONE: FIRE & FURY prelims

Team Lakay got off to a 2-0 start in the preliminary card of ONE: FIRE & FURY iwith Lito “Thunder Kid” Adiwang and Gina “Conviction” Iniong both getting big wins, Friday evening at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.  Explosive strawweight Adiwang lived up to the hype as he needed just over three minutes to submit Thailand’s Pongsiri “The Smiling Assassin” Mitsatit. Lito Adiwang ???????? makes it 2-0 for Team Lakay with a slick kimura submission against Pongsiri Mitsatit! ???????? #WeAreONE #ONEChampionship #FireAndFury pic.twitter.com/iZIiFp2k1n — ONE Championship (@ONEChampionship) January 31, 2020 After feeling each other out, Adiwang blasted Pongsiri with a kick to the body and a flurry of punches that had the Thai striker rocked and in survival mode. Adiwang unloaded a barrage of elbows, but Pongsiri was able to survive the Pinoy’s onslaught.  Adiwang shot in for a takedown and was able to bring the action to the ground, but Pongsiri managed to reverse positions and control the Pinoy from the back.  The 27-year old Baguio native trapped Pongsiri’s arm and timed his transition well, securing the modified kimura lock and forcing the tap, reminiscent of what his teammate Joshua Pacio did to the same Thai opponent.  The stoppage came at the 3:02 mark of the first round.  This comes after the ONE Warrior Series contract winner made a splash in his main card debut at ONE: CENTURY back in Japan, defeating Senzo Ikeda, also via submission.  Adiwang improves to 11-2 in his professional career with seven consecutive wins.  In a women’s atomweight contest, Iniong used her superior wrestling and grappling skills to grind out a Unanimous Decision win over India’s Asha “Knockout Queen” Roka.  Gina Iniong ???????? gets Team Lakay off to a hot start with a unanimous decision win over Asha Roka! ???????? #WeAreONE #ONEChampionship #FireAndFury pic.twitter.com/zRbSRdnIZz — ONE Championship (@ONEChampionship) January 31, 2020 Iniong, a 2019 SEA Games Kickboxing gold medalist, opened with a takedown and kept Roka grounded all throughout the opening round.  Roka offered up a bit more resistance in the second round, but Iniong proved to be the stronger grappler, threatening for a guillotine choke late in the round.  It was all Iniong again in the final round as she was able to take Roka down at will to secure the clear-cut decision win.  Iniong improves to 9-4 in her career as she earns back-to-back victories.  In the opening bout, Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres wasn’t as fortunate, as she was rendered unable to continue after taking a pair of unintentional knees to the groin, leading to a No Contest. .....»»
