MPBL: San Juan tightens grip on second spot in Northern Division

San Juan pulled off a crucial win over Paranaque, 87-77, last Wednesday to keep a hold of the second spot in the northern division of the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Datu Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.   Meanwhile, Rizal stunned Imus, 85-73, to keep its flickering hopes for a playoff berth alive.   Despite playing without top gun John Wilson, the Knights showed a lot of firepower left on their arsenal as frontliners Larry Rodriguez and Larry Muyang did most of the damage.   Rodriguez, a PBA journeyman, finished with 18 points and seven rebounds while Muyang had a double-double effort of 11 points and 10 boards as the duo combined forces inside to terrorize the Patriots.   Former PBA champion Mac Cardona had another solid showing by producing 17 markers for the Knights, who picked up their 17th win in 21 games, the same record being held by the Manila Stars.   San Juan, which defeated Manila in the elimination round earlier, will move up to second spot by virtue of the win over the other rule. Only eight teams per division will advance to the quarterfinal round with the top four getting the home court advantage. All playoff matches will be played in a best-of-three affair, which will be paired according to their ranking.   Top teams in the north and south division will play the No. 8 seeds. No. 2 will face No. 7, No. 3 will square off with No. 6 and No. 4 will meet No. 5 in their respective divisions.   The champions in the north and the south will slug it out in a best-of-five series to determine the first ever MPBL National Champion......»»
