La Salle stays spotless in Filoil Preseason after dropping UE

De La Salle University is yet to falter in the 2018 Filoil Flying V Preseason. Alvin Pasaol and University of the East did their best, but the Green Archers just leaned on total team effort to fend them off for a 71-62 decision on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre. Returning player Mark Dyke topped the scoring column for the Taft-based team with 18 points on top of nine rebounds and flanking him were twin towers Taane Samuel and Justine Baltazar who had 12 and 11 markers, respectively. The Red Warriors were still in the game to start the final frame only to see Samuel and Baltazar impose their will inside to fuel La Salle to what was ultimately their fifth win in as many games in the tournament. Pasaol paced UE with 20 points. They put up another good fight which eventually ended as their second straight loss in four starts. Meanwhile, Colegio de San Juan de Letran sent a statement to NCAA rival Jose Rizal University with a 23-point beatdown, 94-71. Bong Quinto was unstoppable and finished with 17 points while JP Calvo masterfully orchestrated the attack with 18 markers of his own to go along with seven assists, five rebounds, and two steals to help the Knights improve to 3-2. On the other hand, the Heavy Bombers remained winless through six games despite the best efforts of Darius Estrella who had 17 points to his name. PBA: Ta-try kong kunin –- Guevarra on eyeing 5th Slam dunk title

BATANGAS CITY –- Phoenix high-flyer Rey Guevarra just got his fourth Slam Dunk title in five years Friday. Once again, the 31-year old forward dazzled the crowd that trooped the Batangas City Sports Coliseum here to watch the 2018 PBA All-Star Games with his aerial display of athleticism, which included a slam dunk over a man and a motorcycle. Currently, Guevarra is just a title away from tying the feat of legendary Slam Dunk contest phenom KG Canaleta. Now, the question is, will the Letran product gun to equal Canaleta’s five titles?     “In God’s time,” he answered, when asked about shooting for Canaleta’s record, which the current Meralco veteran did in 2005-2007, 2010 and 2012. “Tingnan ko kung kaya ko pa next year.” Guevarra, who made a three-peat from 2014 to 2016 before relinquishing his throne to Chris Newsome of Meralco last year, bested Renz Palma in the sudden death, 40-39, after a 75-75 deadlock in the final round.     Definitely, there is no stopping Guevarra.    “Kung mabigyan ako ng chance siyempre pupunta ako talaga, ta-try kong kunin (ulit ang title),” he said.       --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

PBA: Napagod sila sa dance number -- Guaio on beating Luzon All-Star

BATANGAS CITY –- Smart PBA All-Stars head coach Yeng Guiao credited his boys for a job well done despite playing with a short rotation that became even thinner with Allein Maliksi’s early exit in the opening quarter. His Magnificent Seven, excluding Maliksi who played a meager four minutes before calling it a night, defeated the 11-man PBA Luzon All-Stars, 152-149, Friday in the 2018 PBA All-Star Games at the Batangas City Sports Coliseum here.             But the victory didn’t just come because of Terrence Romeo’s 48 points and 11 assists or Jio Jalalon’s triple-double of 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 dimes. Guaiao shared the secret of their success. The Luzon All-Stars were just plain exhausted. Not because of the game’s quick pace or because of their effort to chip away a 20-point deficit in the third. “Ang sikreto yung Luzon selection masyadong napagod sila. Kahit marami sila, sila ang napagod. Kasi ang haba ng dance number nila so nasunog sila dun,” said Guiao, citing their opponents entertaining performance before the start of the match. The Luzon All-Stars led by team captain and choreographer Arwind Santos were fun to watch in their almost four-minute dance number highlighted by their own rendition of the popular K-Pop song Bboom-bboom by Momoland. But it was an exhausting effort as far as Guiao is concerned.          “Buti kami maikli lang kasi konti lang kami kaya na-preserve namin ang energy namin,” he said. “Bandang huli napagod na rin kami. May lead kami coming into the last few minutes, naubos yung lead namin kasi pagod na nga ang mga bata,” Guiao continued. “Pero mabuti na lang the lead was enough to give us a cushion.” “We almost went into overtime but again that’s really for the enjoyment of the crowd. Buti na lang hindi nag-overtime kasi pagud na pagod na rin kami,” he said.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»
