JONES CUP: Matty Ice wins it for Ateneo against Chinese Taipei

Because of a questionable call, Ateneo de Manila University found itself trailing by two to Chinese Taipei with 3.1 ticks to go in their matchup in the 2018 William Jones Cup. And so, for their final play, the Blue Eagles left no doubt as Matt Nieto coolly converted the game-winning triple that took down the host country, 77-76, on Saturday at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in Taiwan. Nieto ended with 13 points, none bigger than the triple with a defender draped all over him in the dying moments. This, coming from the other end where Thirdy Ravena appeared to have tipped the ball loose from Ying Chung-Chen, but was instead called for a foul. Chen made good on his two free throws, putting Chinese Taipei Blue up, 76-74, with 3.1 seconds remaining. Head coach Tab Baldwin had the perfect play, however, as the ball was inbounded to Ravena who then found Nieto for the big-time trey that silenced the home crowd and bolstered the young UAAP champions’ bid for a podium finish in the regional tournament. William Navarro impressed for the second straight game with 11 points and six rebounds while Angelo Kouame and Tyler Tio also chipped in eight markers each. Ravena turned in his worst scoring output in the tournament with just seven points, but made his presence felt elsewhere with five rebounds and four assists. Still, the hero is Nieto who let the Philippines stayed alive for a podium finish. Ateneo, 5-2, tries to claim its place there up against Iran B on Sunday. PBA: Brownlee can’t be stopped as Ginebra closes in on Finals

Ginebra’s tidal wave in the first half proved to be more than enough to move it one win away from the Finals of the 2018 PBA Commissioner’s Cup. Justin Brownlee was a man on a mission from the get-go and spearheaded the Gin Kings’ wire-to-wire 75-72 win over Rain or Shine on Saturday at the MOA Arena. The American reinforcement dropped 44 points to go along with 16 rebounds, six assists, and five steals and was an unsolvable riddle for all of Gabe Norwood, Ed Daquioag, and Maverick Ahanmisi. Just in 23 minutes in the first half, he already had 25 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. By himself, he outscored the Elasto Painters who could only muster 23 points as a team. Still, Rain or Shine put up a last stand with Beau Belga’s long-range missile and Reggie Johnson’s short stab pulling them to within 72-74 with 9.8 ticks to go, but LA Tenorio’s split from the stripe coupled with James Yap’s missed triple tries closed the door on them for good. “What a brilliant comeback by Rain or Shine. We played a pretty game in the first half and then we made a bunch of mental mistakes (in the second half),” head coach Tim Cone said. “We just held on by our fingernails.” In the end, Ginebra’s lead that was once at 25 points proved to be more than enough for a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five semifinals. Tenorio was the only other Gin King in double-digits with 13 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists. “We got a little bit too Justin-reliant. We have to be better at responding to what happened in the second half,” Cone said. They try to close out the Elasto Painters and claim the first Finals berth in the tournament in Game 4 on Monday at the Araneta Coliseum. Reggie Johnson paced Rain or Shine with 13 points and 22 rebounds while Raymond Almazan also contributed 12 markers and nine boards. Ginebra averts meltdown, beats Rain or Shine to close in on finals spot

Barangay Ginebra blew a big lead before holding off Rain or Shine, 75-72, to take a 2-1 lead in the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup semifinals Saturday night at Mall of Asia Arena. The Gin Kings let a 25-point lead slip away as the top-seeded Elasto Painters came to within two, 74-72, after a quick basket by Reggie Johnson off a baseline inbound pass with 9.8 seconds left. Ginebra playmaker LA Tenorio had the chance to put the game out of reach but he uncharacteristically split his free throws, leaving the door open for Rain or Shine but James Yap missed two deep 3-pointers before time ran out. "What a brilliant comeback by Rain or Shine. Coach Caloy (Garcia) got them ready at h...Keep on reading: Ginebra averts meltdown, beats Rain or Shine to close in on finals spot.....»»
