PBA: 20 points for Yap as ROS drives past NLEX

Rain or Shine gets the better of its former coach again. The Elasto Painters beat Yeng Guiao and the NLEX Road Warriors Friday, taking a 96-87 win in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup at the Cuneta Astrodome. ROS, still without Raymond Almazan, became one of the early winners in the new season’s opening week. Almazan, who infamously went AWOL last season, sat out due to a minor injury. Five players scored in double figures for the Elasto Painters in a big team win. James Yap started the new year strong with 20 points while rookie Javee Mocon added 13 points.  — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Alab Pilipinas re-ignites in ABL after repulsing Macau

Once more in the continuation of their title defense in the 2018-2019 Asean Basketball League, Alab Pilipinas came off a loss, came through in the next game, and came away with a big-time triumph over another contender. Renaldo Balkman’s game-long brilliance coupled with total team effort in the endgame proved to be the difference on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre as the Filipinos turned down the lights on visiting Macau, 106-99. The two teams were going at it for majority of the matchup until Balkman, PJ Ramos, and Pao Javelona got together for a 10-1 run bridging the third and fourth quarters that built up an 82-73 edge for the home team. Of course, the Black Bears would only battle back and pulled within two points inside the last six minutes only to see Balkman and Ramos connive yet again, this time alongside Ray Parks Jr., Ethan Alvano, and Caelan Tiongson in a 16-3 answer that re-increased the Alab lead to 106-91. Both the lead and the momentum would remain with them until the final buzzer. In the end, Balkman 37 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and three assists while fellow Puerto Rican reinforcement Ramos contributed his own 21-marker, 14-board double-double. Parks Jr. also did damage with 13 points and 10 assists while point guards Javelona and Alvano merged for 16 markers, 14 dimes, and eight rebounds. This strong showing was nothing but a welcome development as, just five days ago, the Filipinos fell for the second time in the last four games. With the bounce back win, though, the defending champions remained alone atop the leaderboard now at 7-2. On the other hand, Macau dropped to 6-5 in the standings despite the best efforts of Anthony Tucker who had 22 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds to his name. PBA: Almazan’s ROS return delayed with ankle injury

Raymond Almazan’s long-awaited return to Rain or Shine has been pushed back. After infamously going AWOL towards the end of last season, Almazan was all set to come back for the Elasto Painters in 2019. However, as RoS got its first win of the season Friday against NLEX in the Philippine Cup, Almazan sat out. He was forced to, as Raymond is dealing with a sprained ankle. “Natapakan ko sa paa si Norbet [Torres] sa practice,” Almazan said. “Panay kaliwa na rin yung tapilok ko dati. Tapos yung mga old injuries ko, nakita sa MRI eh. Alam ko may tumubong bone spur. Sa kakalaro ko siguro, minsan kahit masakit nilalaro ko eh,” he added. Despite his new injury, Almazan assures that he’s fine. If there’s one frustration for him however, is that this new injury came when he was named to be part of the Gilas Pilipinas pool once again. Hopefully, he recovers and gets his conditioning back in time. “Hindi naman siya ganoon kalala,” Almazan said on his injury. “Medyo nakaka-disappoint kasi mabibigyan ng bagong tsansa [on Gilas] tapos bigla na naman injury. Sana talaga makabalik ako ng mabilis. Yun talaga,” he added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: James Yap proves he’s still got big game

Looks like James Yap is not done. Signing a fresh three-year deal with Rain or Shine in the offseason, Yap started 2019 with a masterful performance, leading the Elasto Painters to a first win in the Philippine Cup against NLEX. Yap fired four triples on his way to a game-high 20 points. While he’s getting up there in age and the game miles starting to pile up, Yap says it pays off to always stay ready. “Ako naman kasi, ready lang. Nagpapa-kundisyon naman ko sa sarili ko,” Yap said. “Sinabihan din ako ni coach na ready ako this conference, so tumatak sa isip ko yun. Kumbaga excited din ako. Kailangan ready, kasi sinabihan ka din ng coach mo,” he added. After an early exit in the previous season’s Governors’ Cup, Yap says him and his team are focused. Rain or Shine’s early prep has paid off, leading to a nice start in the new season. “Actually hindi kami masyado nakapag-pahinga nung offseason, halos tuluy-tuloy yung practice namin. Pumunta kaming Bahrain, naglaro kami dun, mga kalaban namin tatlong import,” Yap said. “Siguro nadala namin in this game, and then syempre nung na-out kami last conference, di naman namin makakalimutan yun. Every practice, nakikita ko lahat kami focused kasi kailangan bumawi. Alam namin lahat ng player kung anong pakiramdam nung ma-out, di makapasok sa quarterfinals,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Kevin Alas sees improvement in NLEX return

Returning NLEX Road Warriors guard Kevin Alas sees that his team and even himself still need fine tuning as the action in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup continues to unravel. Alas, who is playing in his first game since tearing his anterior cruciate ligament last March, came off the bench and contributed 12 points and 4 assists in 29 minutes of playing time. However, his side was not able to carve out a win against the gritty Rain or Shine Elasto Painters side, falling 96-87 at the Cuneta Astrodome Friday evening. “It felt good pero syempre I wanted the win sana kasi we've been doing well sa offseason. They were the better team, personally. But sa akin personally it felt good kasi 8-10 months ako nawala,” said Alas. The team also paraded new big man Poy Erram, who added 10 markers and 5 rebounds to the team. Though it may it may not be impressive numbers in Erram's debut for his new squad, the former Ateneo big man sees opportunity, as he stressed improvement of chemistry with one another. Alas also shared that he was almost sleepless in anticipation of his return, as it was comparable his feelings before his own pro debut some few years back. With his return to the squad, Alas knows he still has a lot to improve upon as he will only get better in time. “I felt comfortable naman kanina. Pero siguro yung hangin ko kulang pa kasi iba yung hangin na nakukuha mo sa practice iba eh so kanina I felt kulang na kulang pa yung hangin ko,” he shared.   Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary. .....»»

Rain or Shine rides James Yap’s hot hand to frustrate NLEX

Rain or Shine rode on a vintage performance by James Yap to open its Philippine Cup campaign on a good note, thwarting NLEX, 96-87, Friday in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup at Cuneta Astrodome. Yap turned back the clock, uncorking three straight long bombs to wrest the lead from the Road Warriors in the first half and finish with 20 points and three assists, leading the Elasto Painters in scoring for the first time since pushing them to a semifinals berth July last year. "We had good ball movement, we shared the scoring, and James stepped up big time," said Rain or Shine coach Caloy Garcia. The ElastoPainters kept their iron grip on the lead with the help of Javee Mocon who fir...Keep on reading: Rain or Shine rides James Yap’s hot hand to frustrate NLEX.....»»
