Isaac Go exceeded expectations of Coach Tab

Isaac Go is a surefire top three pick in the oncoming 2019 PBA Draft. That is quite a rise for a player once called "big, fat kid." Back in 2016, Go was challenged by then first-year head coach Tab Baldwin to get fit. "I told Isaac, 'You're not gonna eat rice anymore.' He said to me, 'But my mom will get upset with me if I don't eat rice,'" Coach Tab shared then. "And I told him, 'I'm already upset with you that you're telling me that." Still, the 6-foot-7 did what his mentor had asked of him and, slowly but surely, began harnessing his potential. And for Baldwin, seeing how far Go has come is nothing but a pleasant surprise. "I didn't expect a lot from George in the beginning. All I knew was he was intelligent," he said. The now 23-year-old never stopped working, however, and little by little, opened the eyes of his American-Kiwi mentor. "He has respect from everybody on our team because he is a person who gives everything he has to give. We want more athleticism, we want more speed, we want more quickness, he tries," the latter shared. He then continued, "He gives everything he's got." The foundation of how Go did all that was his mind. "The one thing that we all depend on is his intellect, his basketball IQ, and his calmness under pressure," Coach Tab said. And so, there may very well be yet another Blue Eagle going in the top three of the rookie selection process - a Blue Eagle who always tried his best to respond to whatever challenge put in front of him by Tab Baldwin. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

PBA: Losing skid worries coach Yeng as no. 1 NLEX enters playoffs

Despite being the no. 1 seed in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup playoffs, NLEX’s road to the quarterfinals is not exactly inspiring. The Road Warriors lost their last two games of the elimination round and no. 8 Northport was one of the teams that beat up NLEX. “Hindi ko rin alam nangyari eh. We’re just playing badly. The last two games were our worst games,” head coach Yeng Guiao said. “It’s kind of worrying to me kasi we should be peaking at this point, but pababa yung laro namin. I think that’s a reason to worry,” he added. Still, not all is lost for NLEX. Being the no. 1 team means that the Road Warriors have been pretty good all tournament long. Being no. 1 also comes with a twice-to-beat advantage. That playoff bonus should come in handy for NLEX. “I guess it’s also good for us to have lost the first game. We know we have a twice-to-beat advantage, we know that false sense of confidence that we probably had the last time is going to be erased because they beat us,” Guiao said. “We know we have a hard game because they already know they can beat us so we will need all the intensity and preparation to beat NorthPort. Of course, even if you have a twice-to-beat advantage, your mentality is you only have one chance,” Coach Yeng added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: With suspension of players, “silly” things banned at SMB

Even with a shot at a Grand Slam, San Miguel Beer will not tolerate its players doing anything “silly.” The Beermen slapped Arwind Santos, Kelly Nabong, and Ronald Tubid with indefinite suspension following a fight in practice that also included former import Dez Wells. [Related: PBA: SMB suspends Arwind, Nabong, and Tubid for fighting] San Miguel announced its official update hours before taking on TNT in a crucial game to wrap up the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup elimination round. The Beermen ended up taking the loss and they will start the playoffs in a do-or-die situation against Barangay Ginebra. San Miguel’s shot at a second Grand Slam is officially in jeopardy. “We have to accept the reality because we cannot tolerate the incident that happened to us,” head coach Leo Austria said. “Although it’s internal, we have to do something that could give us some reminder, a strong signal, that nobody’s above the policy of the company,” he added. Despite the incident, morale is high on the part of the Beermen says Austria. Despite once again facing an opponent with a twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs, the Grand Slam chase is still pretty much on. However, suspending three players, including a former MVP, is a stern reminder for the Beermen to not do anything that will harm the team. “Maybe a minor setback, but moving forward I think it will help us a lot because it’s a strong signal for everybody in the team na they cannot do something silly, okay?” Austria said. “And supposed to be every one should think of the team bago yung sarili nila. It’s a strong signal for everyone,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
