Old School Power Rankings 2018-19: Weeks 3 and 4

By Scott Wraight, NBA.com It was bound to happen, right? The King was never, ever going to give up his throne to anyone else. Period. Because of that, we had to separate him from the rest of the field and give out a new ranking: ATHO (All To His Own). So unless something crazy happens during the season -- or an injury -- No. 1 will have an asterisk of sorts. Now that the chase has opened up for everyone else, it should make for an interesting and intriguing run to the finish line, asterisk be damned. Notes: - Statistics are through games of Nov. 15 (Nov. 16, PHL time) - Any player who turns 32 during regular season can be added to rankings. - Check out previous rankings - Send comments to my email. If it's good -- and clean -- it may appear in a future column. Be sure to include your first name and city. ATHO. LeBron James (33), Los Angeles Lakers Previous rank: 1 Latest stats: 6 games, 27.5 ppg, 7.0 rpg, 6.2 apg Season stats: 27.6 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 7.2 apg Wednesday's (Thursday, PHL time) 44-point performance against the Trail Blazers was the one. That was the one that pushed the King into his own tier, his own neighborhood, his own ranking. He just refuses to make it fair for everyone else. That's how good he is. In addition to Wednesday's (Thursday, PHL time) superior effort, James has gone for 25 or more in eight of the last 10. _______________________________________________________________ 1. Marc Gasol (33), Memphis Grizzlies Previous rank: 4 Latest stats: 7 games, 16.4 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 4.6 apg Season stats: 15.9 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 4.1 apg After eclipsing 15 points in just three of the first six, Gasol has surpassed the mark in four straight, which included Wednesday's (Thursday, PHL time) effort in which he tied a career high with six three's. Of course the splits over the last seven left us puzzled. In four wins, Gasol went for 21.0 ppg, 9.8 rpg and 52.2 3PT%. In three losses: 10.3 ppg, 7.7 rpg and 0-for-8 from deep. 2. Chris Paul (33), Houston Rockets Previous rank: 3 Latest stats: 8 games, 16.0 ppg, 4.9 rpg, 7.1 apg Season stats: 17.0 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 7.5 apg We were ready to move Paul to the top of the list until Thursday's (Friday, PHL time) effort: 10 points (4-for-10 shooting) and seven assists against the Warriors. In two previous games, Paul managed 21 and 26 on 15-for-25 shooting. Of course four previous contests saw him combine for just 39 points on 15-for-47 (31.9) shooting. It's been a bit of a roller coaster ride in November. 3. LaMarcus Aldridge (33), San Antonio Spurs Previous rank: 2 Latest stats: 7 games, 14.1 ppg, 12.9 rpg, 1.6 apg Season stats: 17.4 ppg, 11.0 rpg, 2.4 apg He's scoring at home while rebounding on the road. In three home games, Aldridge went for 21.0 ppg and 9.3 rpg. In four road games, he averaged 9.0 ppg and 15.5 rpg. Aldridge has been hot and cold this month, failing to score in double figures in two of seven and scoring 20 or more just twice. One consistent has been the board work, grabbing 10 or more in five straight. 4. JJ Redick (34), Philadelphia 76ers Previous rank: 7 Latest stats: 7 games, 17.9 ppg, 1.4 rpg, 3.7 apg Season stats: 18.2 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 3.5 apg Redick is feeling it of late, pouring in 20 or more points and hitting at least three three-pointers in three consecutive games. Coincidentally, he's started the last three games after beginning the season on the bench. We've also taken notice of Redick's volume of long-range shots, making 3.0 treys a game and attempting 8.3 -- both career highs. 5. Lou Williams (32), LA Clippers Previous rank: Just missed Latest stats: 6 games, 21.3 ppg, 2.7 rpg, 5.7 apg Season stats: 19.4 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 4.1 apg Hello there, newbie. Williams, who just turned 32 on Oct. 27, sprints up the list on the strength of five games with 20 or more points -- all while averaging less than 30 minutes (29.4) per game. In fact, the only game he didn't go for 20, he added 10 assists. Digging deeper, the last time Williams failed to break double-figure scoring was Nov. 20, 2017. 6. Kyle Lowry (32), Toronto Raptors Previous rank: 5 Latest stats: 6 games, 13.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 10.0 apg Season stats: 16.1 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 10.7 apg Lowry, who finally saw his streak of games with 10-plus assists end at nine, has been a bit of a road warrior over the last handful of games. In his last three home games, he averaged 9.3 points, 8.7 assists and 40.0 FG%. In three road games, Lowry managed 18.0 points, 11.3 assists and 46.3 FG%. 7.  Wesley Matthews (32), Dallas Mavericks Previous rank: 6 Latest stats: 5 games, 12.4 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.4 apg Season stats: 16.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg, 2.4 apg After starting the season with six straight double-figure scoring games, Matthews has gone for 10 or more in just three of the last seven. He missed one game with a hamstring injury and had to leave Wednesday's (Thursday, PHL time) game after just 21 minutes with the same injury, so that'll skew the numbers a bit, which is why he only fell one spot. 8.  Taj Gibson (33), Minnesota Timberwolves Previous rank: NA Latest stats: 7 games, 12.4 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 1.9 apg Season stats: 11.3 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 1.4 apg Gibson started the season sluggishly, failing to score more than 13 points in any of the first 10 games. Since then, the gritty veteran has gone for 15 or more in three of the last five. Also in those first 10 games, Gibson managed to snag nine or more boards just once. He's done that three times in the last five contests. 9.  Dwight Howard (32), Washington Wizards Previous rank: NA Latest stats: 7 games, 12.6 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 0.4 apg Season stats: 12.6 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 0.4 apg After missing the first seven games of the season with a back injury, Howard is starting to get into a groove. In addition to scoring in double figures in four straight, he has snatched eight or more rebounds in five of the last six. His return to the lineup might also be a reason the Wizards have started to turn things around, winning four of their last six. 10. Goran Dragic (32), Miami Heat Previous rank: 9 Latest stats: 4 games, 16.0 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 4.5 apg Season stats: 17.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 4.8 apg The theme song from Facts of Life keeps running through my head: "You take the good, you take the bad ..." That rings very true with Dragic, who in his four games had three with 20 or more points and one with a goose egg on 0-for-7 shooting. Now, we won't pile on since we realize he missed a pair of games with a knee injury. Just missed the cut: Paul Millsap, JJ Barea, Dwyane Wade, Al Horford, Jeff Green The views on this page do not necessarily reflect the views of the NBA, its clubs or Turner Broadcasting......»»

Clippers edge Spurs for 3rd straight victory

By Beth Harris, Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lou Williams hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 40 seconds remaining and the Los Angeles Clippers beat the San Antonio Spurs 116-111 on Thursday night (Friday, PHL time) for their first three-game winning streak of the season. The Clippers improved to 7-1 at home after blowing leads of 14 points in the second quarter and 10 in the fourth. The Spurs were the third high-powered team in a row beaten by the Clippers, who edged Milwaukee and defending NBA champion Golden State in a pair of overtime wins. Williams led Los Angeles with 23 points off the bench. Danilo Gallinari added 19 points and Tobias Harris 18. Montrezl Harrell stole the ball from DeMar DeRozan in the corner and Gallinari got fouled at the other end. He made four straight free throws and Williams hit two to seal the win. DeRozan scored 34 points for the Spurs, who dropped their third in a row. Rudy Gay added 19 points off the bench. The Spurs tied it up 107-all on a pair of free throws by LaMarcus Aldridge, who had 16 rebounds. Williams pump-faked Bryn Forbes and let fly a three, having missed his two other attempts in the game. DeRozan scored on a drive to get the Spurs to 110-109, but they got no closer. Harrell scored the Clippers' first six points of the fourth to get them back to a double-digit lead, 96-86. DeRozan missed two free throws before Patty Mills and Marco Belinelli hit back-to-back three-pointers that closed the Spurs to 96-94. San Antonio got within one early in the third on basket by DeRozan. He twice scored to put them within two. But every time the Clippers answered to stay ahead, with their second unit scoring 10 of their final 12 points for a 91-84 lead after three. The Clippers opened the second quarter with a 15-2 run that produced their largest lead of 44-30. Harrell scored seven in a row. PBA: Just like old pal LeBron, Travis thankful for second chance after botched clutch free throws

Late in the Lakers' home game against the Atlanta Hawks Monday morning in Manila, LeBron James found himself at the foul line to shoot two clutch free throws. If the King makes two, the Lakers take the lead. If he makes one, game is tied. James missed both. Fortunately, Kyle Kuzma ended up with the offensive rebound and while the second-year forward also ended up missing his go-ahead floater, LeBron slammed the follow up to finally put the Lakers up one. [Related: James' dunk lifts Lakers to 107-106 win over Hawks] Los Angeles ended up winning the game to be above .500 for the first time in the current NBA season. Later that day in Manila, LeBron's old buddy Romeo Travis found himself at the foul line late in Game 2 of the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup semifinals against Ginebra. Romeo makes two and the Magnolia Hotshots take a five-point lead to ice the game. If he makes one, his team is still up by two possessions with four seconds to go. Travis missed both. Fortunately, the former Best Import somehow found himself grabbing the offensive rebound and he was fouled again. Travis missed the first free throw anew but made sure to make the second one. Magnolia ended up winning the game and the Hotshots are now up 2-0 in the best-of-5 semis against the reigning two-time champions. "Yeah, I actually watched the game. I may have jinxed myself. He [LeBron] had a second chance, I had a second chance. He made the most of it and I made the second free throw and we ended up winning the game," Travis said of his trips to the foul line. "I just missed them you know? I thank God for second chances. I missed three and luckily they came in pairs and I'm thankful to make the last one to seal the game. I'm just thankful for second chances. Everybody don't get them so I'm thankful for the second opportunity to seal the game," he added. Save for some spotty moments late in Game 2, Magnolia's composure has been incredible so far in this series. The Hotshots have weathered multiple storms from the Gin Kings and now they find themselves on the brink of the Finals. As long as Magnolia keeps playing to win, there should be no reason why they can't advance, especially after putting up back-to-back masterful performances against Ginebra. "They're just a resilient team and they have great players so they'll always make a run. We just have to stay composed," Travis said of the Gin Kings. "Late in the game we got out of our sets, I believe we were trying to not lose instead of winning the game. When you start playing to not lose, you get a little tight. We didn't run our offense the way we should and so that's how they were able to make a run," he added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

James dunk lifts Lakers to 107-106 win over Hawks

By Beth Harris, Associated Press LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James scored 26 points and dunked for the winning basket in the final seconds, lifting the Los Angeles Lakers to a 107-106 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday night (Monday, PHL time). Kyle Kuzma added 18 points for the Lakers' fifth win in six games. Kuzma's layup tied the game at 104-all with 1:34 to go. Kent Bazemore was called for a technical at the end of that play and Kuzma made the free throw for a 105-104 lead. Vince Carter dunked to put the Hawks back up 106-105. James got fouled at the other end and missed both. But the Lakers got the offensive rebound and Kuzma charged into the paint amid three defenders for a shot from the left side. It missed. James was waiting on the right, dunking for a 107-106 lead. LBJ powers it home to give LAL the lead late! #LakeShow pic.twitter.com/gBSwV1jBIy — NBA (@NBA) November 12, 2018 Taurean Prince led the Hawks with 23 points, Bazemore added 21 and Trae Young had 20 for Atlanta, which still has just one road win on the season. Alex Len's dunk started a 7-0 run that put Atlanta ahead 102-98 in the fourth. James' basket drew the Lakers within one, but then he missed two long jumpers on the same possession. The Hawks trailed by nine to start the fourth. Their first three baskets in the fourth came on three-pointers by Prince (two) and Young (one). The Lakers dominated the third, outscoring Atlanta 32-22 to take an 84-75 lead into the fourth. But Atlanta kept coming, hitting three consecutive three-pointers to start the fourth when James was on the bench for the Lakers. Len's dunk gave the Hawks a 99-98 lead, just the second time they led in the second half. James' dunk that tied the game midway through the second quarter got started with Rajon Rondo. He tossed up an alley-oop pass that Brandon Ingram batted back as he ran out of bounds to a trailing James, who provided the thunderous finish. The Hawks raced to a 9-0 lead to start the game, their largest lead of the night. The Lakers missed their first three shots and Ingram committed two turnovers. TIP-INS Hawks: They haven't beaten the Lakers at Staples Center since March 4, 2016. ... Prince was called for a flagrant-1 foul on James in the first quarter. ... James scores 25 as Lakers top Kings 101-86

By Rob Gloster, Associated Press SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — LeBron James scored 25 points and recently signed Tyson Chandler had 12 rebounds as the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Sacramento Kings 101-86 Saturday night (Sunday, PHL time). The Lakers, who began the season with three straight losses, moved to .500 (6-6) for the first time this season by holding the Kings, who entered the game averaging 118 points per contest, to their lowest scoring total of the season. It was only the second time Sacramento has been held below 100 points this season, and it marked the first time Los Angeles had held an opponent below 100. James hit three three-pointers and had seven rebounds. He only had two assists, though he often fed teammates for open shots that missed — including Lonzo Ball, who was 2-for-10 from the field. Chandler, playing in his second game with the Lakers, logged 23 minutes and scored three points. Los Angeles has won four of its last five. De'Aaron Fox had 17 of his 21 points in the first half to lead the Kings, who shot 35 percent from the field and went 6-for-25 on three-pointers. The Lakers were ahead by six points at the half and held a 76-65 lead entering the fourth quarter. They built that lead to 20 points at 88-68 before the Kings responded with a 10-0 run, but Sacramento got no closer. TIP-INS Lakers: The previous low by a Lakers opponent this season was 110 points. ... Ball missed all six of his three-point attempts, most of them wide open. ... Drummond, Johnson pace Pistons to easy win over Hawks

By GEORGE HENRY,  Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — Andre Drummond had 23 points and 11 rebounds, Stanley Johnson added a season-high 22 points and the Detroit Pistons beat the Atlanta Hawks 124-109 on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). In a game that was essentially decided in the first quarter, the Pistons were so dominant that they scored 74 points and led by 23 at halftime with Blake Griffin, the NBA's fifth-leading scorer, 0 for 2 from the field. Drummond's double-double was the 300th of his career, most in the league since his rookie season of 2012-13. The Hawks had nobody capable of matching up with his 6-foot-11, 279-pound frame. Drummond has hit 31 field goals, shot 62 percent and pulled down 54 rebounds in his last three games. The rebuilding Hawks, who feature one of the NBA's youngest rosters, have lost three straight and seven of eight. Jeremy Lin finished with 19 points. Trae added 16, and Omari Spellman had 14 points and 10 rebounds. Griffin didn't take a shot until the 2:20 mark of the second, heading to halftime with seven assists and five rebounds in his first 10 minutes. His first basket, a 3-pointer from the right corner, came with 5:14 to go in the third, pushing the lead to 93-67. He finished with nine rebounds, nine assists and six points. The Pistons, who have won two straight, took their first 26-point lead on Stanley Johnson's three-point play midway through the second. They matched it several times in the third, the last coming in the final minute when Ish Smith's layup made it 103-77. TIP-INS Pistons: Griffin began the night with 273 points, the most for a Detroit player through 10 games since Jerry Stackhouse had 277 in 2000-01. ... Detroit had seven players in double figures. ... . ... G Reggie Bullock finished with 13 points and four assists in 23 minutes. He returned against Orlando and had one point and four assists in 18 minutes after missing the previous two games with an ankle sprain. ... The Pistons hit 12 free throws, 18 less than Atlanta, and had their 19 attempts were 21 less. Hawks: The state of the organization could be summed by the loudest cheer of the night, which came midway through the fourth when Drummond missed two free throws to guarantee fans a promotional card for a free chicken sandwich. ... Alex Poythress had four fouls in six minutes of the first half and spent the rest of the game on the bench. ... Kevin Huerter returned to the team after missing Wednesday's loss to New York for personal reasons and had two points in 29 minutes. Kings come on strong late to beat Timberwolves 121-110

By MICHAEL WAGAMAN,  Associated Press SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Willie Cauley-Stein had 25 points, Nemanja Bjelica scored eight in a row during a big run late in the third quarter and the Sacramento Kings beat the slumping Minnesota Timberwolves 121-110 on Friday night to spoil a huge game for Karl-Anthony Towns. De'Aaron Fox added 16 points and 10 assists for Sacramento. Iman Shumpert scored 17 and Bjelica finished with 14 points and eight rebounds. Coming off back-to-back losses to East powers Milwaukee and Toronto, the Kings led by 15 early in the fourth quarter but had to hold off a late surge by Minnesota to end a three-game losing streak to the Timberwolves. Towns had a season-high 39 points and 19 rebounds on a night when Minnesota's inconsistent offense sputtered much of the way. The Timberwolves trailed by 14 midway through the fourth before Derrick Rose made consecutive 3-pointers to start a 12-0 run. Minnesota had a chance to tie the game but Jimmy Butler missed two free throws with 3:19 left. Sacramento scored the next seven points to pull away. Rose had 21 points, five assists and six rebounds. Butler was a game-time decision but played 41 minutes and had 13 points, eight rebounds and eight assists. The Timberwolves are 0-8 on the road. Sacramento missed 11 of its first 14 shots and fell behind by 12 early in the first quarter. Cauley-Stein helped rally the Kings in the second, scoring eight points as Sacramento took a 63-61 halftime lead. Towns made his first five shots and was 7 of 9 in the first quarter when Minnesota jumped out to a 12-point lead. He cooled off a bit in the second but made two 3s and had 29 points and eight rebounds by halftime. TIP-INS Timberwolves: Two days after setting a franchise record with 20 3-pointers, the Timberwolves failed to find their stroke beyond the arc, going 7 for 25. . Andrew Wiggins (bruised right quad), Jeff Teague (bruised left knee) and Justin Patton (right foot) were held out. Kings: Kosta Koufos made a 19-foot jumper at the buzzer to end the first quarter. .
