PBA: Patience is a virtue for Calvin, Phoenix

With star forward Calvin Abueva struggling against Meralco, Phoenix head coach Louie Alas could have easily shut down the Beast for the night. In some ways he did, but when Rookie of the Year Jason Perkins fouled out, the Pulse Fuel Masters had no choice but to have Abueva back in the game. It paid off the have the Beast in the end, as Calvin eventually hit the game-winning putback in overtime as Phoenix survived the Bolts in a thriller. Abueva only made two baskets all game, both came in the extra five minutes. Calvin finished wiith nine points on 2/13 shooting. “Really, patience is a virtue. Actually understatement eh, yung masama yung laro. Walang shinoot,” Alas said of Abueva. “Pero good thing yung mga assistant coach ko sabi, ‘coach pagpasensyahan mo, kailangan mo yan sa dulo.’ And it happened, it happened. Sa kanya yung winning basket,” he added. Phoenix looked like it had no business winning the game against Meralco, especially in regulation. The Pulse Fuel Masters lost an early 18-point lead and failed to cash in on multiple attempts to break an 83-all deadlock in the fourth quarter. Come overtime, Phoenix was down one after giving up a clutch three from Chris Newsome with 11 seconds to go. “I have to give credit sa resiliency ng mga players ko,” Alas said. “Siguro isang overtime pa, puro cramps na yan. Sabi nga sa akin ng assistant coach ko, 'coach, tigil na natin yung full court pressure.' But sabi ko, 'doon tayo nagli-live up.' So we just have to finish it. Kahit ilang overtime mangyari,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
