Harden s 50-point triple-double leads Rockets over Lakers

By Kristie Rieken, Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden had 50 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists, scoring 11 points during a big fourth-quarter run to lead the Houston Rockets to a 126-111 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night (Friday, PHL time). Harden grabbed his 10th rebound with less than 90 seconds left to give him his second triple-double this season and the 37th of his career. LeBron James finished with 29 points for the Lakers, who had won their previous two games. Houston's lead was three after Kyle Kuzma's soaring dunk, but Harden was fouled on a three-pointer and made all three free throws to make it 112-106. Harden then made three-pointers on consecutive possessions to push the lead to 12 and cause Lakers coach Luke Walton to call a timeout. James was in Harden's face on the second one and Harden fell to the court as the ball rolled around the rim for a couple of seconds before dropping in. James added a dunk before Clint Capela and Harden made consecutive baskets to compete the 13-2 run and make it 122-108 to put the game out of reach. It was the first meeting between these teams since Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo got into a fight on Oct. 20 (Oct. 21, PHL time) that led to suspensions for both players and Brandon Ingram. There wasn't an altercation this time around in a game where Rondo sat out as he recovers from surgery to repair a broken right hand. But there was a spate of technical fouls late in the third quarter that led to the ejection of Nene. The Lakers scored six straight points, highlighted by a dunk from James, to get within 74-72 midway through the third quarter. Los Angeles ran off six in a row later in the period to tie it up before Harden ended the run with a jump shot. Nene then received a foul after being knocked to the ground trying to defend Kuzma as he drove to the lane. He yelled at officials and received a technical foul. Kuzma made his free throws but Kentavious Caldwell-Pope missed the technical shot. Nene made a hook shot before fouling Kuzma again on the next possession. He continued to scream at officials and was hit with a second technical foul and was ejected. Harden attempted to calm him down, but Nene continued to be agitated until he was escorted to the locker room. Kuzma made all three foul shots and added a three-pointer with Harden in his face after a triple by Harden to leave the Lakers up 88-87 with 9.9 seconds left in the quarter. Kuzma was called for a foul after that and Walton got a technical for arguing about that call. Harden made the technical shot and Paul added two more free throws to leave Houston up 90-88 after three. TIP-INS Lakers: Kuzma received a technical foul in the first quarter for arguing about a foul call. ... Brandon Ingram missed his fourth straight game with a sprained left ankle. ... Kuzma had 24 points to give him 20 or more points in a career-best six straight games. Rockets: Brandon Knight played in his first game since Feb. 15, 2017, after recovering from surgery to repair a torn left anterior cruciate ligament. He came in with about four minutes left in the first quarter and played about four minutes with one assist and one rebound. ... James Ennis sat out with a strained right hamstring. Mitchell, Jazz roll over short-handed Heat 111-84

By Matthew Coles, Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Donovan Mitchell scored 21 points and Derrick Favors had 17 to help the Utah Jazz romp over the short-handed Miami Heat 111-84 on Wednesday night (Thursday, PHL time). "It started from the tip," Mitchell said after the Jazz led by as many as 42. "We came out strong and didn't let up." Playing against one of his basketball idols probably for the final time, Mitchell unleashed a variety of moves — the crossovers and misdirection dribbles that have prompted comparisons to a young Dwyane Wade. Mitchell has acknowledged he studies film of Wade to develop his own offensive repertoire. On Tuesday night (Wednesday, PHL time), Mitchell took Wade to dinner in downtown Salt Lake City and gifted him a rocking chair. Then, the second-year guard, who said he calls Wade on the phone often and picks his brain, matched up and scored on the 12-time All-Star at least a few times in the blowout. Rodney McGruder paced the Heat with 16 points and Kelly Olynyk had 14 as Miami played without Hassan Whiteside and Goran Dragic. Wade, set to retire after the season, scored six points. Less than two weeks ago, the Jazz also went up big in the first quarter against the Heat, leading by as many as 19 before allowing a 20-0 run and watching Wade sink two free throws to win it in Miami, 102-100. This time, there was no such drama. The Jazz sprinted out to a 34-10 lead on hot shooting and tenacious defense that denied the Heat any easy looks early. Favors went 7-of-8 and had eight boards in 19 minutes, while Rudy Gobert had 10 points and 11 rebounds. Kyle Korver, who has opened up the floor for the Jazz since arriving via trade from Cleveland, made four more three-pointers and scored 16 points. The Jazz have had an up-and-down year by any measure. This win marked Utah's second by 27 points or more in eight days, but the Jazz have also lost games by 33 and 50 points and have yet to reach the .500 mark at home (now 5-6). Even within the same game, the Jazz were nearly unstoppable in the first quarter — shooting 70 percent — but went through long stretches later in the game when they couldn't generate any offense and had a spate of turnovers. They ended up shooting 52.6 percent, including 16-of-32 from three-point range, with 17 turnovers. The Heat have been riding their own rollercoaster. They led by 31 in the second quarter of a win against New Orleans on Nov. 30 (Dec. 1, PHL time) and then trailed by 31 — and more — in the second quarter to the Jazz less than two weeks later. MISSING YOU Whiteside, who left the court for the locker room during the fourth quarter of a home loss to Orlando last week, is still not with the team for personal reasons. He later said he just needed to go to the bathroom, but Miami coach Erik Spoelstra was upset and said the Heat "handled it as a team." Whiteside is expected back with the club on Friday (Saturday, PHL time). Dragic, who has battled a sore right knee for the last six weeks and had it drained in mid-November, missed the game — his 12th scratch of the season. Fellow guard Dion Waiters hasn't played at all since having ankle surgery in January. TIP-INS Heat: Wade, making his last regular-season appearance in Salt Lake City, got a standing ovation when he checked in midway through the first quarter and another when exited the court after the game. ... The Heat's 15 points were a season low in the first quarter for a Jazz opponent. Jazz: Raul Neto missed the game with a sore right leg. ... The win snapped a four-game skid against Miami. UP NEXT Heat: Visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). Jazz: At the Orlando Magic on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time)......»»

HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden had 29 points and seven Rockets scored in double-figures as Houston used a big second-half run and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 111-104 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night (Wednesday, PHL time). Clint Capela added 13 points and seven rebounds before fouling out with five minutes left, and Eric Gordon, who started in place of James Ennis, had 14 points for the Rockets, who shot 49 percent from the field. Houston's bench played a key role in a 24-6 first-half run that erased a 15-point deficit, and then led a charge in the second half. Gerald Green had 13 points, and Danuel House had 12 off the bench. Damian Lillard had 34 points, CJ McCollum scored 22 points and Jusuf Nurkic added 15 points and 10 rebounds for Portland, which shot 44 percent after starting the game by making seven of its first nine shots. Houston used a 25-5 run to end the third and start the fourth quarters, and opened a 100-83 lead on three-pointer by Harden with 6:48 left. House and Green each had five points in the run. The Blazers responded with a 14-2 run and cut the lead to 102-97 when Nurkic made a pair of free throws with three minutes left. After trading baskets, Houston pushed the lead to 107-99 on a free throw by Harden and two free throws by Chris Paul. After Lillard missed a layup, Paul hit two more free throws to push the lead back to 10 points with 1:38 left. Portland got no closer than eight the rest of the way. George has 31 as Thunder roll by Jazz in playoff reprise

By Murray Evans, Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Paul George went 5-of-6 from three-point range and scored 31 points, Dennis Schroder added 23 and the Oklahoma City Thunder beat the Utah Jazz 122-113 on Monday night (Tuesday, PHL time). Steven Adams had 22 points in the first meeting between the Western Conference foes since the Jazz downed the Thunder in six games in the first round of last season's playoffs. Oklahoma City overcame a 4-of-18 shooting performance by Russell Westbrook, who nonetheless managed a triple-double with 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Oklahoma City has won 15 straight regular-season games at home against Utah, although the Jazz did beat the Thunder in Oklahoma City in Game 2 during their playoff series. The Thunder have gone 17-4 since starting this season 0-4. Donovan Mitchell battled foul trouble much of the game but led the Jazz with 19 points, while Rudy Gobert recorded his 23rd double-double of the season with 13 points and 14 rebounds. It was the second straight lopsided road loss in two days for Utah, which fell 110-97 on Sunday (Monday, PHL time) at San Antonio. The Thunder jumped to a 6-0 lead, causing Jazz coach Quin Snyder to call a timeout just 68 seconds into the game. Oklahoma City gradually built its lead to 17 points before settling for a 57-46 halftime advantage. George, who scored 25 fourth-quarter points during a 47-point outburst in a win at Brooklyn on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time), nearly reprised that performance in the third quarter. George hit his first three-point attempt 50 seconds before halftime, then hit his next four shots from behind the arc en route to a 17-point third quarter. That helped the Thunder build their lead to 26 points near the end of the quarter and the Jazz never seriously threatened after that, although they did cut a 29-point deficit to nine in the final minute. Reserve Epke Udoh scored 10 points in nine minutes for Utah. Jae Crowder had 13 points and Derrick Favors had 12 for the Jazz. TIP-INS Jazz: Mitchell hit a halfcourt shot at the first-quarter buzzer for his first points of the game, allowing him to avoid a second straight scoreless first quarter . Gobert was called for a technical foul with 52 seconds left in the third quarter after complaining about a foul call while trying to guard Adams . Ricky Rubio, who had averaged 18.8 points during Utah's previous eight road games, had 10 against the Thunder. Thunder: The Thunder are 14-1 this season against sub-.500 opponents, including the Jazz, who entered the game at 13-14 . Schroder received a technical foul with 6:20 left . The triple-double was the 110th of Westbrook's career. UP NEXT Jazz: Host Miami on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time). Thunder: Visit New Orleans on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time)......»»
