Mbappe scores 2 as PSG moves 7 points clear; Depay injured

By Jerome Pugmire, Associated Press PARIS (AP) — Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain moved seven points clear at the top of the French league with a resounding 4-0 win at 10-man Saint-Etienne on Sunday. Midfielder Leandro Paredes scored his first PSG goal before Mbappe's brace took his club career tally to a whopping 102 a few days before his 21st birthday. An eventful game saw Neymar hold his head in his hands after a rare penalty miss, and the ultra-efficient Mauro Icardi scored yet another clinical goal. In Lyon, star striker Memphis Depay and midfielder Jeff Reine-Adelaide were coming to terms with serious knee injuries that could keep them out for the rest of the season. Both players ruptured knee ligament during a 1-0 home defeat to fourth-place Rennes. Saint-Etienne played 65 minutes with 10 men after midfielder Jean-Eudes Aholou’s sending off. It proved an easy win for Thomas Tuchel's side, which has played one game less than second-place Marseille approaching the midseason winter break next weekend. As Mbappe ran through and smacked the ball into the bottom left corner in the 90th, Saint-Etienne fans were in raucous party mode. Flares were lit and fireworks let off. The referee blew full time straight from the restart, choosing not to play any additional time. He had interrupted the game for about a minute early in the second half to let smoke from flares dissipate. A fan group at Saint-Etienne was celebrating its 20th anniversary and notified the club, referee and stewards know beforehand with the game passing off peacefully. Paredes netted with a volley from the edge of the penalty area in the 10th, with Saint-Etienne goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier beaten by a deflection off a defender. Saint-Etienne’s chances were severely reduced when Aholou was sent off in the 25th for a crude two-footed lunge on Paredes. After Mbappe had a goal correctly ruled out for offside, Ruffier twice made fine saves from Neymar. Mbappe read Neymar’s first-time pass well and fired the ball under Ruffier's body in the 44th. Ruffier denied Neymar twice with his legs and PSG winger Angel Di Maria hit the post — within 10 minutes of the second half. After Neymar was tripped by Mathieu Debuchy, he sent Ruffier the wrong way from the spot but the ball hit the right post in the 62nd. The ice-cool Icardi confirmed his status as PSG’s new arch-poacher in the place of Edinson Cavani, adroitly clipping home a half-volley at the back post from left back Layvin Kurzawa’s cross in the 74th. RISING STAR, INJURED STAR Eduardo Camavinga scored an accomplished late goal as Rennes won 1-0 at Lyon to move up to fourth place. The injuries to Depay and Reine-Adelaide overshadowed 17-year-old Camavinga's latest stellar performance. He shot to prominence with an outstanding performance against PSG in August. Then age 16, he set up a goal and demonstrated a staggering range of passing as he pulled the midfield strings in a 2-1 win. Now he is celebrating his first league goal, and the way he took it will only have served to remind Europe's leading clubs what a precocious talent Rennes has in its team. The goal came in the 89th minute after he collected a pass wide on the left. Camavinga advanced confidently at pace toward goal, with his head up. Drawing center half Joachim Andersen out of the penalty area, Camavinga cut past him with a sudden change of direction, then held off two other defenders before slotting the ball past goalkeeper Anthony Lopes and in off the left post. Rennes is one point behind third-place Lille, having played one game less. Lyon slipped down to eighth spot after a second straight home defeat. Also Sunday, seventh-place Bordeaux lost 1-0 against Strasbourg, with striker Ludovic Ajorque netting for the visitors in the 11th minute. It was Ajorque's sixth goal of the season and moved the Alsace-based side up to 13th place......»»

SEA Games success a historic feat for PH beach spikers

It was one Southeast Asian Games to remember for the Philippine women's and men's beach volleyball teams.  For eight days, the country's top sand court players put up a valiant stand in front of their home fans at the Subic Tennis Courts. Rallying with the battlecry #Sambansa, their efforts were rewarded.       The women's team of Sisi Rondina, Bernadeth Pons, Dzi Gervacio and Dij Rodriguez fulfilled their goal of bringing the country back to the podium for the first time in 14 years.     It was a breakthrough for Jude Garcia, Jaron Requinton, Edmar Bonono and James Buytrago, as they gave the Philippines' its first-ever men's beach volleyball medal.              "This has been such a historic feat for Philippine Beach Volleyball and we dedicate this win to our fellow Pinoy athletes who have sacrificed a lot to pursue what they love doing the most. We also dedicate this win to our Philippine Volleyball Community, who has continuously given us the strength and support to power through. Maraming salamat, Pilipinas!," said team manager Charo Soriano. With five victories and gallant efforts in losses against traditional powerhouses Thailand and Indonesia in the single-league competition, the Rebisco-backed Philippines side matched the 2005 bronze medal finish by Fil-Ams Heidi Ilustre and Diane Pascua.   There's no way for the Filipinas but to go up, not only in the next SEA Games in Vietnam two years from now but also in future international competitions such as FIVB World Tour 1-star tournaments.      "We are so thankful for our sponsor, unang una ang Rebisco. Natupad pangarap namin na makapaglaro ng maayos dahil sa kanila," said Gervacio.  In a tough eight-team men's field, the Filipinos made it to the semifinals for the first time since 2007 behind Parley Tupaz and Rhovyl Verayo.   After bowing to Thailand in the semis, the Philippines nipped Singapore, 2-1, for the bronze medal, as Garcia and Requinton took charge in the golden match.      Following the Christmas holidays, the Philippine sand court standouts will immediately resume training as they prepare for tough battles in domestic and the FIVB World Tour 1-star tournament this May.        For more updates about the Philippine beach volleyball team, please check its social media accounts @pilipinasbeachvolleyball on Instagram and Facebook, and @phbeachvolley on Twitter......»»

ONE: Rodian Menchavez vows to redeem himself after loss at ONE: MARK OF GREATNESS

Rodian "The Redeemer" Menchavez knows what he needs to work on following his setback at ONE: MARK OF GREATNESS. The Filipino Brawler's Lab representative locked horns with "The Big Heart" Yoon Chang Min last Friday, 6 December where he lost via guillotine choke at the 1:45 mark of round two. To Menchavez's credit, he held his own against Yoon in the early going of the contest until he lost steam, which eventually led to his downfall in the second stanza. “I’ll also be focusing on getting more wind because I also struggled with that. I think I can hang with him anywhere, but I lacked in conditioning. I was already fading out in the first round,” Menchavez said.  “When the second round came, I couldn’t carry my weight anymore and I was running after my breath. Nothing surprised me with what he did, I was just struggling with my conditioning.” The game plan, according to Menchavez, was to keep the bout on their feet, a strategy that backfired the moment “The Big Heart” imposed his will on the ground.  It was something “The Redeemer” quickly owned up to.  “I’ll admit that I lacked in preparation. I didn’t take home the victory and I apologize to everyone who believed in me,” Menchavez said.  “We wanted to keep it on the feet. We worked really hard on that, but we really lacked preparation on the ground. But I’ll be back.” The defeat was his second straight loss in The Home of Martial Arts. He was stopped by "The Underdog" Li Kai Wen in just 10 seconds at ONE: PINNACLE OF POWER in June 2018. Still, Menchavez remains in high spirits as he targets redemption next year, but not before he celebrates the holidays with his loved ones. “The plan now is to go home, rest, and celebrate Christmas. After that, we’re back to the grind.".....»»

ONE: Ramon Gonzales gets quick turnaround, returns at ONE: AGE OF DRAGONS

Ramon “The Bicolano” Gonzales asked for a quick return to the ONE Championship stage following his last setback at ONE: AGE OF DRAGONS last month in Beijing, China – and it looks like the matchmakers at ONE heard his request.  The Filipino karateka gets the ball rolling for the Philippines next year as he takes on Elipitua “The Magician” Siregar of Indonesia at ONE: A NEW TOMORROW on 10 January at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.  “I really want to bounce back quickly for all my supporters and everyone who never stopped believing in me,” Gonzales said.  In his clash with “Wolf Of The Grasslands” Hexigetu, Gonzales was clearly outmatched in all areas of the match, resulting in a shutout unanimous decision loss.  For the 32-year-old who won his last three matches before that loss, there is nowhere to go but up. The key now is to show that the loss does not define him, and that his best has yet to come. “I promise to always be at my best moving forward, to show that I am always improving in all facets of the game.”  But it is not only Gonzales that Filipinos should be excited for. An explosive main event opens the year for ONE Championship as ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang “The Iron Man” Jitmuangnon defends his strap against former champ Jonathan “The General” Haggerty in a rematch.  They first clashed in the co-main event of ONE: DAWN OF HEROES last August in Manila, where Rodtang came away with a convincing unanimous decision win in front of a very receptive Mall Of Asia Arena crowd.  The Home Of Martial Arts returns to action on 10 January for ONE: A NEW TOMORROW at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.....»»
