UAAP: Paul Desiderio, the captain who brought UP back to the Final Four

In University of the Philippines' historic Final Four-clinching victory, Paul Desiderio was lit. Atin ‘To Papasok ‘To pic.twitter.com/LhhwhQGX4M — Mico Halili (@micohalili) November 14, 2018 👀 #AtinToPapasokTo pic.twitter.com/kwwtVFjMce — ABS-CBN Sports (@abscbnsports) November 14, 2018 Funny to think that months before UAAP Season 81, UP almost didn't have this man. After Desiderio's spectacular Season 80 filled with buzzer-beaters and iconic mantras, the temptation of foregoing his fifth year and immediately entering the professional ranks was strong. But then, he sacrificed his good numbers and decided to go for his one last #UPFight. "Nag-sacrifice ako noon sa last year ko. Yun nga pinagisipan ko kung babalik ako o hinde. My personal goal, sinakripisyo ko para sa team," he said referring to his lifelong PBA dream. "Pero worth it naman. Kaya sobrang saya," Desiderio said moments after their 97-81 victory over De La Salle University. The road to Final Four of UP was not a smooth ride. Their first round campaign which ended at a 3-4 slate casted doubts on their chances. "Mayroong doubts din noon, pero yun nga, dapat labanan namin ngayon," said the Cebuano standout. But as the season progressed, the Fighting Maroons peaked. It was a spectacular sight for Desiderio. They were crushing a Final Four contender. Their supporters were abounding. The chants were deafening. During the dying moments of the match, Desiderio can't help but rush to his mentor Coach Bo Perasol. With a huge smile on his face, he hugged Perasol so tightly. "Coach Bo parang tatay ko yan. May times nga na nagaaway kami, di naman nag aaway pero di kami nagkakaintindihan tapos may times na kalagitnaan ng season lagi kami nagusap anong gagawin namin so yun, naging successful yung plano namin," he said. From being part of the team as early as the winless days of Season 76, Desiderio is now the captain of the third-seeded team in Season 81. "Syempre napakasarap na start ako ng 0-14, tapos ngayon Final Four may chance pa mag Finals. May chance pang mag champion kung ganun, so buhay pa kami. Buhay pa ang UP," he said. Truly, Desiderio's decision to stay for UP is worth it. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @the9cruz.....»»

UP BRIGHT! Akhuetie s sights still set on UAAP 81 championship

Bright Akhuetie's arrival in the University of the Philippines in 2016 was the biggest news for every Diliman frustrated faithful. He was seen as the answer to UP's campaign back to relevance. People even started saying that given his performance then back in the NCAA, Akhuetie can bring UP to the Final Four and the championship. Whenever he heard those comments back in 2016, he has always said that he is not making any promises and he will just do his best. Fast forward to 2018 in UAAP Season 80 when UP has finally landed in the Final Four, Akhuetie is still sticking to his rhetoric.  "No promises but all I promised was to give it my best every day to make sure we get to where we wanna go to. And I really appreciate the fact that we got this today, so we're one step closer to achieving our dream," he said moments after their Final Four-clinching victory over De La Salle University. In their historic win, he produced 16 points and 20 rebounds. So far in the season, he is averaging 18.9 points, 14.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. Maybe this is 'his best' that he is talking about. Whatever it is, it's enough to bring them to the Final Four. But to the UP community, don't celebrate all out yet because for Akhuetie, reaching the Final Four is just an inch closer to the ultimate goal. "We take it one step at a time. Like I said, it's a step closer to our dream which is to win a championship, so one step at a time," said the MVP frontrunner. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @the9cruz.....»»

PBA: Tenorio, Gin Kings quick to move on to Game 4

While it was Justin Brownlee that did most of the heavy liftin to bring back Barangay Ginebra from an 18-point deficit in Game 3 of the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup semifinals, it was actually LA Tenorio who hit the final marginal basket to keep the Gin Kings' title defense alive. Tied at 103, Tenorio hit the go-ahead floater with 14 seconds to go. And after Ginebra forced a Magnolia miss, Tenorio also hit the last two free throws to seal the final tally. "Na-shoot siya eh," Tenorio said on his final field goal. "Well opportunity yun na nabigay sakin on that particular possession, might as well take it di ba? Everyone is expecting Justin to get the ball. We got nothing to lose in that possession, I was just thinking of being aggressive and see what was gonna happen," he added. Tenorio was terrible all game long for the Gin Kings, struggling to find his shot. While LA did finish with 14 points for the game, 11 of them came in the final period to help Ginebra pull through. "Actually struggling ak othe whole game, medyo iba yung pakiramdam ko today eh. But that's not an excuse," he said. "I think the whole team was really focused today but I cannot say na we really played well," he added. Despite cutting their Manila Clasico deficit in half, Tenorio and the Gin Kings are not quite happy yet. It's just one game after all. "We only got one game, inside the locker room after the game it was nothing, we moved on right away and are thinking about Friday's game right away," Tenorio said.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Brownlee after saving Ginebra again: 'We ll be all right'

Justin Brownlee was the personification of the "Never Say Die" attitude Wednesday for Game 3 of the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup semifinals. Ginebra's super import scored a career-high tying 46 points, 18 in a pivotal third quarter run, to will the two-time champion Gin Kings back from the dead in Manila Clasico. Brownlee almost single-handedly brought Ginebra back from an 18-point second half deficit and the Gin Kings' bid for a three-peat is still going. "I don't know man," Brownlee said, almost in disbelief of his own superhuman effort to save the series for Ginebra. "That's Never Say Die attitude. The fans, they got into the game and they gave us a boost of energy. We just wanted to keep it going, it's fortunate that we got the win, that's the most important thing," he added. Thins were not looking pretty for Ginebra at halftime. Mark Barroca scored 12 points to spark a late rally for Magnolia late in the second period and the Hotshots took full control of the game. Brownlee was the only one keeping Ginebra at that point, scoring 19 at the break. At the end of the third period and another 18 points later, he brought Ginebra back. To cap it all off, it appeared that Brownlee had a hand in Paul Lee's game-winning triple for the Hotshots. "We just find out if we stick together and stay positive," Brownlee said. "I think, we'll be all right. We'll overcome any adversity we have," he added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
