2018 PBA Draft Baller Breakdown: Bong Quinto

Ever since he was a young boy who grew up playing 3-on-3 streetball in Barangay Pasong Tamo, Quezon City, Kierjohn “Bong” Quinto dreamed about making it to the PBA. Tomorrow, his lifelong dream will finally be realized. The only question is, which team will draft the NCAA’s best small forward? STRENGTHS At 6’1”, Quinto was a match up problem for any team that faced the Letran Knights. Because of his strength, there was nobody in the NCAA who could handle him in the post. Quinto would attack the defense any way he wanted. If the defender was smaller, he would usually back him down and shoot a fadeaway. If the defender was bigger, he would face-up and make a powerful move towards the basket. Either way, it was easy money for Quinto. In his fifth and final season with the Knights, Quinto ranked 8th in scoring averaging 15.1 points a contest. He also averaged 8.1 rebounds and 6.5 assists, solid all-around numbers that earned him a spot in the Mythical Five. Prior to participating in Season 94, Quinto helped the Batangas City Athletics win the inaugural MPBL Championship, proof that he is experienced enough and ready for the physicality of the big boys in the PBA. WEAKNESSES At 6’1”, Quinto might be too small to be a forward in the PBA. Right now, he is labelled as a “tweener”. So, assuming he would have to play shooting guard, there’s a lot of aspects in his game that he has to work on. The first and obvious thing would be his shooting. Quinto only took 22 three-point attempts the entire NCAA season and made seven of them. He also rarely took mid-range jumpers because he didn’t have to. His shooting is a huge question mark as of the moment. In order to be effective in the pros, Quinto will have to show everybody that he has a shot because his “bully ball” style of play will not work on every one at this level. Another thing he will have to improve on is his speed. Although Quinto has shown surprising athleticism at times especially when he would dunk the ball during fast break opportunities where he found himself uncontested, his speed does not blow you away. If he really does makes the transition to the two in the PBA, he might have to shed off some excess pounds to be able to keep up with explosive guards like Chris Newsome or Terrence Romeo.    .....»»

Lillard scores 24, Blazers hold off NBA-best Raptors 128-122

By Anne M. Peterson, Associated Press PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Damian Lillard had 24 points and the Portland Trail Blazers snapped a two-game slide with a confidence-boosting 128-122 victory over the NBA-leading Toronto Raptors on Friday night (Saturday, PHL time). Zach Collins scored 16 points and Seth Curry added a season-high 13, including three key tbhree-pointers at the start of the fourth quarter. Both were part of a Portland bench that outscored Toronto's reserves 58-26. Kawhi Leonard returned after missing two games and had 28 points for the Raptors (23-8), who played without All-Star point guard Kyle Lowry. Danny Green added 19 points and 11 rebounds, matching his season high with five triples. Portland led by 16 in the fourth quarter but Leonard and C.J. Miles made consecutive three's to pull the Raptors to 117-113 with 2:44 left. Lillard hit a three-pointer for Portland before Leonard had another three and Fred VanVleet made a layup to get Toronto to 120-118. CJ McCollum and Al Farouq-Aminu answered with consecutive three's to extend Portland's lead to 126-118 with just under a minute to go. Leonard dunked on the other end, but the Raptors couldn't get any closer. Portland was in first place in the Western Conference after beating Washington on the road back on Nov. 18 (Nov. 19, PHL time) to improve to 11-5. But the team lost eight of 11 going into Friday night's (Saturday, PHL time) game to tumble into ninth in the conference. The Raptors, meanwhile, had lost just three previous games on the road this season. The victory snapped a six-game Portland losing streak to the Raptors. Lowry sat out with a left thigh bruise. VanVleet started in his place and finished with 21 points. Lowry led the Raptors with 23 points in a 113-93 win over Golden State on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time). The victory was costly, however. Jonas Valanciunas dislocated his thumb in the game and required surgery. He will be in a cast for the next four weeks. Valanciunas was averaging 12.8 points and 7.2 rebounds a game. Portland was coming off a pair of losses on the road to Houston and Memphis. The Blazers went up 42-31 in the first half after Meyers Leonard's alley-oop dunk from Evan Turner. Portland led by as many as 13 and went into the break in front 58-50. Leonard, who was 0-for-5 from the field in the first half, had eight points to open the third quarter and his jumper got the Raptors to 59-64. But Leonard picked up his fourth foul later in the quarter and went to the bench for a while. OG Anunoby's jumper closed the Raptors to 82-80 but Collins answered with a three-pointer for the Blazers. After Portland had a 91-89 edge going into the fourth, Curry made a pair of three-pointers and the Blazers pushed the lead to 101-90. Curry hit another triple to give Portland a 107-93 advantage. TIP-INS Raptors: Former Oregon Ducks forward Chris Boucher was called up from the G-League on Thursday (Friday, PHL time). He will help fill the void created by Valanciunas' absence. ... It was the third of a four-game road trip for Toronto. Trail Blazers: It was Portland's third straight win at home. ... There was a sizable contingent of Raptors fans and several Canadian flags at the Moda Center. One group sang along loudly to the Canadian national anthem before the game. UP NEXT Raptors: Play at Denver on Sunday (Monday, PHL time). Trail Blazers: Portland has a one-game road trip to play the Clippers on Monday (Tuesday, PHL time)......»»

PBA: Clutch Paul Lee shows up on both ends to save Magnolia s title chances

Magnolia was on the brink of an epic Finals collapse. The Hotshots have lost all of their 17-point lead in Game 5 of the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup Finals and Romeo Travis' strong drive for a go-ahead layup was emphatically denied by Best Import Mike Harris. Alaska's Kevin Racal has dived for the loose ball but somehow, someway, Paul Lee managed to snag the leather and dribble his way to an open baseline. Lee, the newly-awarded PBA Best Player of the Conference, shot a mid-range jumper in rhythm. He swished it and gave the Hotshots a 79-78 lead with 1.3 seconds to go. It was his only score in the second half as he finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Magnolia would go on and win, taking a crucial 3-2 lead in the Finals. "I took the chance eh, kasi wala na eh down kami. Yung small details na ganun, yung mga 50-50 ball, yun yung mga nagpapanalo ng laro. Nakuha and then na-convert ko, so it gave us a win," Lee said on his series-defining save. "Struggle ako buong series offensively, pero yung coaching staff and the whole team, lagi nila sinasabi na next shot, next shot, papasok din yan. Tinira ko lang, luckily yung timing maganda siya. Sobrang bait talaga ni Lord alam mo yun? Sa kanila na eh, tapos ganun yung naging end nung game. Wala na akong hiling, napaka-gandang panalo nun," he added on his version of The Shot. A couple of plays before, Lee had another brilliant save that helped set up Game 5's wild finish. Down two, Lee managed to stop a 3-on-1 Alaska break before finding Ian Sangalang on the other end for a game-turning three-point play. That play gave Magnolia a 77-76 lead with 18 seconds to go. "I won't give up in any play, hanggang walang pito or di stop yung game. Yun naman tinuro samin from the start, hanggang di pumipito or walang deadball, tuluy-tuloy lang," Lee said. "Ayun nag-end up sa magandang play pa ganun lang yung mentality namin," he added. With Game 6 on the horizon, Lee knows it's going to be doubly hard and he wants the Hotshots to try and stay sharp. A title is on the line after all. "It's gonna be hard next game, yun yung pinaka mahirap na game. We need to prepare and of course wag namin kalimutan na mag-enjoy din sa laro," Lee said.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Sangalang on Game 6: 'Pipilitin na namin makuha'

Ian Sangalang sure knows how to time his big performances. In a game where import Romeo Travis had perhaps his worst showing of the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup Finals, Sangalang had his best, leading the Magnolia Hotshots in scoring with 20 points on 61 percent shooting to go on top of six rebounds. More importantly, Sangalang was clutch too as his crucial three-point play inside the last 20 seconds gave Magnolia, 77-76 lead. "Unang-una, nung nandun kami sa court akala mo talo ne eh, pero thankful ako sa mga teammates ko kasi sila yung nagtrabaho dun sa kabilang court eh," Sangalang said, describing the play where Paul Lee had to stop a 3-on-1 Alaska break before he connected on the and-one play on the other end. "Hindi sila nag-give up. Sila yun eh, hindi na ako yun," he added. A win away from clinching the title, Sangalang knows it's going to be harder than ever and so Magnolia has to maintain its level of focus and concentration. The Finals has been marked with intense and physical action on both ends and it's going to take another hearculean effort from the Hotshots to close this one out. "Next game kailangan mag-focus talaga kami, kasi kita niyo naman yung game na yun hindi ganun kadali," Sangalang said. "Tulungan lang kami. Alam kong hindi ganun ka-easy, lalo na kalaban mo Alaska. Hindi ganun kadali pero pipilitin na namin makuha," he added.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Rivers leads Chargers to last-second comeback win over KC

By Dave Skretta, Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Philip Rivers led the Chargers to a pair of touchdowns in the final minutes, then hit Mike Williams for the go-ahead 2-point conversion with 4 seconds remaining to give Los Angeles a 29-28 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night. The Chargers (11-3) trailed 28-14 before Justin Jackson scored with 3:49 to go, then forced Patrick Mahomes and Co. into a quick punt. Rivers went right back to work, throwing a fourth-down dart to Travis Benjamin and getting some help from a questionable pass-interference penalty on their final drive. The flag on Kendall Fuller gave the Chargers first-and-goal at the 1 with 8 seconds to go, and Williams hauled in a juggling catch along the sideline. And faced with an extra-point for overtime, coach Anthony Lynn went for the win and Williams was all alone in the end zone. Not only did the Chargers clinch a playoff berth, they forged a first-place tie with the Chiefs (11-3) in the AFC West while ending a nine-game losing streak to their longtime division rivals......»»

Harden s 50-point triple-double leads Rockets over Lakers

By Kristie Rieken, Associated Press HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden had 50 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists, scoring 11 points during a big fourth-quarter run to lead the Houston Rockets to a 126-111 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night (Friday, PHL time). Harden grabbed his 10th rebound with less than 90 seconds left to give him his second triple-double this season and the 37th of his career. LeBron James finished with 29 points for the Lakers, who had won their previous two games. Houston's lead was three after Kyle Kuzma's soaring dunk, but Harden was fouled on a three-pointer and made all three free throws to make it 112-106. Harden then made three-pointers on consecutive possessions to push the lead to 12 and cause Lakers coach Luke Walton to call a timeout. James was in Harden's face on the second one and Harden fell to the court as the ball rolled around the rim for a couple of seconds before dropping in. James added a dunk before Clint Capela and Harden made consecutive baskets to compete the 13-2 run and make it 122-108 to put the game out of reach. It was the first meeting between these teams since Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo got into a fight on Oct. 20 (Oct. 21, PHL time) that led to suspensions for both players and Brandon Ingram. There wasn't an altercation this time around in a game where Rondo sat out as he recovers from surgery to repair a broken right hand. But there was a spate of technical fouls late in the third quarter that led to the ejection of Nene. The Lakers scored six straight points, highlighted by a dunk from James, to get within 74-72 midway through the third quarter. Los Angeles ran off six in a row later in the period to tie it up before Harden ended the run with a jump shot. Nene then received a foul after being knocked to the ground trying to defend Kuzma as he drove to the lane. He yelled at officials and received a technical foul. Kuzma made his free throws but Kentavious Caldwell-Pope missed the technical shot. Nene made a hook shot before fouling Kuzma again on the next possession. He continued to scream at officials and was hit with a second technical foul and was ejected. Harden attempted to calm him down, but Nene continued to be agitated until he was escorted to the locker room. Kuzma made all three foul shots and added a three-pointer with Harden in his face after a triple by Harden to leave the Lakers up 88-87 with 9.9 seconds left in the quarter. Kuzma was called for a foul after that and Walton got a technical for arguing about that call. Harden made the technical shot and Paul added two more free throws to leave Houston up 90-88 after three. TIP-INS Lakers: Kuzma received a technical foul in the first quarter for arguing about a foul call. ... Brandon Ingram missed his fourth straight game with a sprained left ankle. ... Kuzma had 24 points to give him 20 or more points in a career-best six straight games. Rockets: Brandon Knight played in his first game since Feb. 15, 2017, after recovering from surgery to repair a torn left anterior cruciate ligament. He came in with about four minutes left in the first quarter and played about four minutes with one assist and one rebound. ... James Ennis sat out with a strained right hamstring. LPU, Letran outfitter opens first-ever store and showroom

A year after returning to the local market, Team Rebel Sports Pilipinas looks to strengthen its hold with the opening of its first-ever store. Back in 1998, company founder Joel Cu, who was just 21 years old back then, opened a start-up company in Santolan that focused on making sports uniforms. Twenty years later, they are back to where it all began. "We are back in Santolan. We opened our first store here a few blocks from here," recalled Cu. "This showroom is made for our kababayan nating Pilipino. We want to produce good uniforms to our fellow Filipinos. Gumagawa nga tayo ng uniform sa ibang bansa pero ngayon, we are opening ourselves back here," he added. During the 2000s, Rebel decided to shift its model to outsourcing to foreign clients. It proved to be a success as the US and Australian markets embraced the brand. But it felt empty as Cu's main goal was to give Filipinos a local brand they can be proud of. Enter Lyceum Pirates assistant coach Jeff Perlas. "We had this informal chat last year. Sabi ni Joel, 'Jeff, how can we be active in the local sports market?' I was busy in LPU nun," shared Perlas. "For me, one way of promoting a brand is through the athletes. That's the key for this. What I did was we used the players from LPU and other players na kilala natin. From there, we were able to experiment with the power of social media.  "Surprising na last year, umakyat yung sales three-fold. Yung market reacted," added Team Rebel's consultant. PBA club team Northport Batang Pier came knocking a few months later. It was the breakthrough moment they needed. "It's our entry point last year when we rigged the jersey of Globalport," Cu shared. With the local demand growing, Cu and his staff expanded the operations of its factory in Antipolo. Twenty-four hours, seven days a week with a staff of almost 200 people were needed to accomodate the orders. At present, Rebel is the outfitter, not only of Northport, but also of collegiate powerhouses Lyceum and Letran. To cap of Rebel's year, the company opened its first store, a showroom by all accounts, at 290 Santolan Road Corner 5th Street West Crame, San Juan City. And they are hoping that this would help cater to more Filipinos. "The vision for Rebel is to focus on all sports on all levels. Marami pa e. For the public schools, we want to help them out by sponsoring their varsity teams. We are also researching more on how we can give our women's athletes the right uniforms," Cu disclosed. “Hopefully, in 2019, we can offer more to our kababayan.”.....»»
