MPBL: Pasaol takes charge for Zambo in Game 1 victory over Batangas

DAVAO CITY -- Fifth seed Zamboanga Family's Brand Sardines gutted out a 78-74 victory over fourth-seeded Batangas-Tanduay, to take Game One of the 2019-20 Chooks-to-Go MPBL Lakan Cup best-of-three quarterfinals, Monday at the Rizal Memorial Colleges Gym here. It was Davaoeno Alvin Pasaol who led the charge for Zamboanga, finishing with 17 points, five rebounds, two steals, one block, and an assist. With the crowd cheering them on largely thanks to Pasaol, Zamboanga led by 10, 42-32, early in the third canto. Trailing 76-67 with 3:37 left in the game, the Athletics launched a spirited comeback, scoring six straight points, capped by Jeff Viernes's two freebies with 28.8 ticks, to slash their deficit to just three, 76-73. Then on the other end, Alvin Pasaol's inbound was stolen by Jayson Grimaldo. A scramble for the loose ball occurred and Viernes was fouled by Anton Asistio. However, Viernes split his charities with 15.3 seconds remaining, 76-74, before Robin Roño was fouled. Roño calmly sank both free throws before Viernes missed two triple attempts to end the match. "We need to stay composed kasi playoffs na ito. Good thing we stuck on our defensive plan in the end. We made stops, we controlled the rebounds and hit the crucial free throws," head coach Britt Reroma said. Roño added 13 markers and eight rebounds while Aaron Black chipped in 11 points, four boards, and three dimes. Harold Arboleda chalked up 10 markers and seven rebounds as well. Viernes paced the Athletics with 18 points, six rebounds, and five assists while Jhaymo Eguilos had 16 markers and nine boards. Adamson takes down Ateneo to take next step in UAAP 82 stepladder

Adamson High School is onto the next rung of the UAAP 82 Boys Basketball stepladder playoffs after turning the lights off of Ateneo de Manila High School, 84-75, Wednesday at Filoil Flying V Centre. The inside-outside combo of Season MVP Jake Figueroa and John Erolon worked wonders for the Baby Falcons who scored their second straight win against the Blue Eaglets to stay alive and stake claim to the seat opposite twice-to-beat Far Eastern University-Diliman. It definitely didn’t come easy, however, as the San Marcelino-based squad actually fell victim to a blazing 20-6 beginning by their opponents. Figueroa and Erolon kept coming, though, and Adamson slowly but surely clawed its way back into the contest. Only down three heading into the final frame, it was then Joshua Barcelona’s turn to come up big as he joined forces with their main men in a 20-2 tear that put them on top, 75-60. Ateneo didn’t quit just yet, but only came as nine in the last five minutes. In the end, Figueroa posted a powerful 15-point, 22-rebound double-double to go along with four blocks, four assists, and two steals while John Erolon also added 16 markers, five boards, and five dimes. With that, the Baby Falcons move on to a taller task of challenging the second-seeded Baby Tamaraws. The schedule of that showdown is yet to be determined. For the Blue Eaglets, Forthsky Padrigao showed the way with 22 points, eight assists, seven rebounds, and four steals while Joaquin Jaymalin chimed in 20 markers. Lebron Lopez and Josh Lazaro also had a fine finish to their first years with the former finishing with 13 points, seven blocks, and four rebounds and the latter ending with 12 markers, 10 boards, six rejections, and three assists. BOX SCORES ADAMSON 84 - Erolon 16, Figueroa 15, Dominguez 13, Quinal 13, Guarino 11, Barcelona 10, Cosal 6, Hanapi 0. ATENEO 75 - Padrigao 22, Jaymalin 20, Lopez 13, Lazaro 12, Espinosa 4, Ladimo 2, G. Salvador 2, Corral 0, De Ayre 0, Nieto 0, Pangilinan 0, M. Salvador 0. Even after UAAP 82 exit, Padrigao has no regrets about sacrificing for Ateneo

Forthsky Padrigao was invited to the 2020 Basketball without Borders Global Camp running from February 14 to 16. The primetime playmaker sacrificed his spot in the annual gathering of the top young talent from all over the world so he could lead Ateneo de Manila High School in its do-or-die game against Adamson High School. Only, Padrigao and crew came up short on Wednesday. With the Blue Eaglets’ campaign coming to a close, his calendar has just opened up quite a bit. Still, he has no regrets about making such sacrifice. “Definitely, no regrets kasi ‘di porket ni-sacrifice ko ‘tong isang bagay, magiging successful na ako rito sa isa,” he said. He then continued, “In life, we take risks and sa risks na yun, if we succeed, then good. If we don’t, then we learn from that.” Indeed, the 5-foot-11 court general has, without a doubt, learned a lot from his first season as the blue and white’s main man. “Yung chemistry ko with (Lebron Lopez and Josh Lazaro), medyo surface level pa lang, pero siguro, throughout the summer, mas magiging maayos chemistry namin,” he said. And with that, Padrigao says he and Ateneo will be back for more for his last go-round in high school. As he put it, “Definitely, gutom na gutom kami. But let’s see what awaits us.” —— Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Middleton, Bledsoe help Bucks beat Kings minus Antetokounmpo?

By JIM HOEHN Associated Press MILWAUKEE (AP) — Khris Middleton and Eric Bledsoe scored 28 points apiece to lead the Milwaukee Bucks past the Sacramento Kings 123-111 on Monday night, as the Bucks won without new father Giannis Antetokounmpo. Antetokounmpo, the reigning MVP, missed the game after he and his girlfriend welcomed their first child, a son whose birth he announced earlier Monday on his Twitter account. Milwaukee trailed 90-88 after three quarters, but opened the final period with 13 consecutive points as Sacramento missed its first five shots. Bledsoe capped the run with back-to-back 3 pointers to put the Bucks up 101-90. Bogdan Bogdanovic hit two free throws to pull the Kings within 103-97 with 5:58 remaining, but the Bucks pushed the lead back to 111-100 on a 3-pointer by Donte DiVincenzo. Harrison Barnes had 23 points and De’Aaron Fox added 17 for the Kings, who had won four of their previous five. Brook Lopez added 20 points for the Bucks, who improved their NBA-best record to 46-7. Milwaukee is 4-6 when trailing after three quarters. Sacramento, which trailed 38-24 after one quarter, took its first lead at 57-56 on Nemanja Bjelica's layup with 37 seconds left in the half. After making 16 of 31 shots in the first quarter, including 5 of 12 from beyond the arc, the Bucks were just 6 of 21 in their 19-point second quarter. TIP-INS Kings: Forward Jabari Parker, acquired at the trade deadline from Atlanta – where he missed 20 of his last 21 games with a right shoulder impingement – was inactive Monday for the third consecutive game with Sacramento. Coach Luke Walton said there is a chance Parker could play Wednesday at Dallas. Bucks: Milwaukee signed veteran forward Marvin Williams on Monday and waived forward Dragan Bender. Williams, in his 15th season, averaged 6.7 points and 2.7 rebounds in 41 games with Charlotte this season. The 6-foot-8 Williams, the second overall pick in the 2005 draft by the Atlanta Hawks, has averaged 10.3 points and 5.2 rebounds over his career. Bender averaged 3.7 points in seven games with the Bucks and also played in 13 games for the Wisconsin Herd of the NBA G League. UP NEXT Kings are at Dallas on Wednesday. Bucks are at Indianapolis on Wednesday......»»

UAAP 82: Umandal confident to lead UST post-SEA Games

Jau Umandal is about to get a much bigger role for UST in the UAAP Season 82 men's volleyball tournament. As the Tiger Spikers look to make a return to the Final Four following a one-year absence, Umandal's development after a stint with the Philippine national team could prove crucial. Umandal was part of the Philippine team that won silver in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games. "Sobrang laki ng confidence ko, and sobrang laki ng role ko para sa team," Umandal told ABS-CBN Sports. "Kasi galing ako sa national team sa SEA Games, yung nanalo tayo sa Thailand sobrang laking confidence sakin na maglaro sa UAAP dahil sa experience na nakuha ko," he added. Before the SEA Games, the Philippines had a a two-week camp in Japan, which proved to be worth it as the national team took down five-peat seeking Thailand in the semifinals before bagging a historic silver medal. As great as that is though, not all players have the privilege to play for tha national team and Umandal is taking the responsibility to guide the Tiger Spikers using his national team experience. "Ituturo ko sa kanila yung mga natutunan ko, mga mechanics na natutunan ko sa Japan, kung paano gawin mga bagay na mapapadali lang," he said. "Tinuturo ko yun sa kanila sa training, gina-guide ko sila lagi lalo na yung mga bata kasi sa program namin, iba na set up namin mas mabilis. Ni-level up na namin," Umandal added. — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
