Alyssa, Aby wants more ‘consistent’ nat’l team

NAKHON RATCHASIMA---A true, solid national volleyball team. This what Philippine team standard bearers Alyssa Valdez and Aby Marao are hoping to form as they "take the initiative" to meet up with current members as well as aspiring players even when their respective leagues are in season and there is no international event scheduled yet. Consistency, according to the duo, is what's needed by the national team which blew away winnable matches against higher ranked teams to end up ninth overall in the Asian Volleyball Confederation Asian Cup. Japan and China were locked in the battle for the championship late Sunday. Australia and Iran, which narrowly escaped the Philippines' cla...Keep on reading: Alyssa, Aby wants more ‘consistent’ nat’l team.....»»

UAAP: Coach Tab upset over inappropriate refereeing vs Ateneo

Coach Tab Baldwin expressed his disappointment over how the referees handled the game during the low points of Ateneo's blowout win over NU at the Araneta Coliseum Saturday evening. Baldwin implied that the three-man crew was partial towards the trailing Bulldogs, who were down by as much as 27 in the contest. He stated examples of the supposed bias of the three referees, who allegedly let NU give out excessive contact with the Blue Eagles players.  "I'd like to know why the foul count skews considerably when you have a big lead. I'd like to know why players are allowed to push off, when we're denying them the basketball for full court throughout the game," the former Gilas Pilipinas coach said after the game. "And they warned us for flopping. I'd like to know what is the rationale in the referee's minds to change the way they referee because the score changes. And those are questions somebody should answer." The mentor however clarified that what the referees did was out of a culture, something that he has consistenly seen in his 35-year coaching career.  He then added that that kind of officiating must not stoop down to the collegiate level. "You should referee on the possession, on the merits of the possession. And nothing else. If there's any other agenda working in referee's minds, it's inappropriate. Baldwin made it known that he was not happy, even though they got the win, and hopes that things will called right down the middle.   "[I]t annoys the hell out of me. Obviously, I'm sitting here like I should be happy, but I'm pissed off." __ Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary.   .....»»

PBA: San Miguel pours it in third period to halt Columbian

The San Miguel Beermen showed off their shooting prowess as they drilled 23 three-pointers to down the Columbian Dyip, 143-119, in the continuation of the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum Friday evening. They tie a PBA record for most three-pointers made in a game, achieved twice by the TNT KaTropa franchise, which they last did on Jan. 14, 2009, coincidentally against the Beermen, per PBA chief statistician Fidel Mangonon III.  Down by two in a back-and-forth first half, 64-66, San Miguel exploded in the third quarter, finishing the period on a very high note, as they closed the final 7:28 with a 34-11 blitz and never looked back to improve to a 2-1 record. Columbian meanwhile drops to 0-6. Arwind Santos started off the gates very quickly, scoring 19 points in the opening period on 7/11 shooting, including a scorching 5/8 clip from downtown. The former league MVP finished this outing with 29 markers, and seven threes, coupled with five rebounds and four blocks.  San Miguel's Gilas Pilipinas trio of Marcio Lassiter, Christian Standhardinger, and Alex Cabagnot meanwhile combined for a 61-point effort, including six three-pointers from Marcio and three from Alex.  "That's one thing na sinasabi ko sa kanila. We stressed yung offense. the problem is our defense. In the first half we gave up 64 points and that's not a sign of good D. Fortunately our offense is superb. Happy because we won the game but sad we're not playing good defense," San Miguel coach Leo Austria said after the game.  Jackson Corpuz meanwhile paced Columbian's offense with 28 points, and was followed by import Akeem Wright's 22. Jerramy King and Rashawn McCarthy added 22 points and 18, respectively. AZ Reid meanwhile flirted with a quadruple-double, posting 16 points, 17 rebounds, 11 assists, and six steals.  THE SCORES: SMB (143) -- Santos 29, Lassiter 28, Standhardinger 21, Reid 16, Nabong 14, Cabagnot 12, Pessumal 11, Ross 7, Heruela 5. Mamaril 0, Vigil 0, Ganuelas-Rosser 0, Agovida 0, de Ocampo 0. Columbian (119) -- Corpuz 28, Wright 22, King 22, McCarthy 18, Khobuntin 7, Escoto 6, Cabrera 5, Celda 2, Reyes 2, Gabriel 2, Cahilig 2, Sara 2, Tubid 1, Ababou 0.  Quarter scores: 34-26, 64-66, 107-84, 143-119.  __   Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary. .....»»

NCAA: Why wasn t Joel Cagulangan ever in Batang Gilas?

Joel Cagulangan was ranked the top point guard in all of high school in the NBTC 24 a year ago. There, he stood alongside the likes of Kai Sotto, SJ Belangel, and Will Gozum. Unlike those three, however, Cagulangan has never worn the flag in international competition. Just why is that? The 18-year-old said he himself doesn’t know – because he has never been contacted by Batang Gilas. “Wala naman po akong narinig na ni-contact nila ako o sila coach,” he shared. He then continued, “Gusto ko po sana (mag-Batang Gilas) kaso mas gusto ko mag-focus sa NCAA.” Cagulangan has been doing just that in the ongoing Season 94, leading College of St. Benilde-La Salle Greenhills to the top spot in the standings in its title defense. And on Friday, he turned in a 38-point masterpiece, a career-best in scoring to go along with nine rebounds and seven assists. Through it all, the graduating guard reminded everybody that he is a scary sniper as all but two of his points came from behind the arc. “Sabi kasi ng coaches na off lagi ang shooting ko so after (ng talo namin) sa Mapua (last Tuesday), shooting lang nang shooting. Buti, nagkakumpyansa ulit,” he shared. Indeed, Cagulangan took that loss, just their second of the season, to heart and did his all to make sure his team bounced back. And more than his career performance, he was happy to see total team effort. “Mas magandang feeling talaga na buong team yung nag-contribute,” he expressed. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
