Skin bleaching in Africa: A factfile

Skin bleaching, or lightening, has become popular in many African countries. Here's a factfile: Creams Skin creams are by far the most popular form of bleaching. They work by inhibiting production of melanin, the pigment produced by exposure from the sun. Ingredients include hydroquinone, steroids, lead and mercury. Such creams may be safe in specific doses for a limited amount of time. But they may be dangerous when used for extended periods or in high concentrations, say experts. "What you find is that people use the products for much longer than they're supposed to and so they start getting those really harmful side effects," said Dr. Rasheedah Adesokan...Keep on reading: Skin bleaching in Africa: A factfile.....»»

Boxing: Nietes, Palicte will both be training at Wild Card for upcoming title bout

Filipino super flyweight contenders Donnie 'Ahas' Nietes and Aston 'Mighty' Palicte will be facing off for the vacant WBO Super Flyweight World Championship on the upcoming HBO and 360 Promotions-presented SuperFly 3 card on September 8th (September 9th, Manila time) at The Forum in Los Angeles, California.  The all-Filipino world title showdown will be the second one this year, and more than anything, it's a testament to the level of boxing talent in the Philippines.  This particular one however, puts the protagonists in a peculiar predicament.  Aside from being fellow Negros natives, Nietes and Palicte will both be based at the famed Wild Card Gym for their respective training camps.  The 27-year old Palicte, who's signed under Roy Jones Jr.'s boxing promotion, began training at the California-based boxing gym run by legendary trainer Freddie Roach back in 2016, the same year that he made his US debut.  This will be Palicte's third bout in the United States.  "Siguro mahirap sa mga cutman ko, sa trainer ko, pero alam na nila kung anong gagawin, bahala na sila." Palicte said.  Palicte trains under former Filipino boxing world champion-turned-trainer Rodel Mayol, who in turn, helps out with Team Nietes and ALA Promotions whenever they're in the United States. Like Palicte, Nietes and ALA have always set up camp at the famed gym.  The 36-year old Nietes made his US debut back in 2015, and has fought there twice since, most recently defending the IBF Flyweight World Championship at SuperFly2 back in February.  The Wild Card Gym has become somewhat a home away from home already for both Nietes and Palicte, and while they're on a collision course, it seems like they will both sharing the same training grounds.  For Nietes, it's just a matter of scheduling.  "I-[sort out lang] yung time namin," Nietes told ABS-CBN News' Steve Angeles. "Na hindi kami mag-abot sa training camp, siguro morning siya, hapon ako, para hindi lang kami mag-sabay sa training." Whatever happens in this fight, the Philippines gets a new world champion, and it can be considered a win for the Wild Card Gym.    H/T: Steve Angeles, ABS-CBN News.....»»

Warriors GM Myers: Goal is to have Cousins in the Playoffs

NBA.com staff report The Golden State Warriors stunned the NBA world this summer by signing All-Star big man DeMarcus Cousins. Adding a big man of his caliber to the two-time defending NBA champions doesn't seem fair to most -- but it's worth remembering that Cousins is still recovering from the Achilles injury that halted his season with the New Orleans Pelicans in late January. Cousins recently told ESPN's Marc J. Spears that he's shooting to return by training camp in late September. Whenever he does step back on the court, the Warriors will have an almost unprecedented collection of talent featuring two MVPs (Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry), three career 20-point scorers (Durant, Curry, Cousins), another career 19-point scorer (Klay Thompson) and a Defensive Player of the Year (Draymond Green) with 27 All-Star appearances between them, all under the age of 30. For Warriors GM Bob Myers, the long-term goal -- Cousins contributing in the 2019 playoffs -- is what matters most. He said as much yesterday, writes Mark Medina of The Mercury News: “The goal for us is to have him in the playoffs,” Myers said at halftime of the Warriors’ 87-81 summer-league win on Sunday over the Houston Rockets. “That doesn’t mean we’ll wait until the playoffs. When he’s ready to play, he’ll play. We just don’t know when that will be.” The Warriors might have some clarity soon. Myers said that Cousins plans to get reevaluated later this month on his progress since sustaining the injury with the New Orleans Pelicans on Jan. 26 against Houston. Shortly after the Warriors agreed to a deal with Cousins last Monday, Cousins told The Undefeated he planned to return in time for training camp in late September. Shortly after signing his contract in Las Vegas on Friday, though, Cousins changed his message that fits more with what the Warriors want. “I think the surgery is anywhere from eight to ten months from the time you have it,” Myers said. “For us, it won’t be, ‘We need you to get out there tonight. It’ll be ramping it up slowly. You can’t really tell with a guy until they get on the court and does certain things.” ... The Warriors did not immediately dismiss concerns about Cousins’ injury, though, when his representatives contacted Myers last Monday. Myers said his camp allowed the Warriors to look into Cousins’ medical records. The Warriors lost free-agent center JaVale McGee to the Los Angeles Lakers on July 1 and fellow backup big man/free-agent Zaza Pachulia is reportedly headed to the Detroit Pistons. That leaves second-year center Jordan Bell and third-year center Damian Jones in line for the lion's share of center minutes while Cousins mends. The Warriors are expected to re-sign restricted free agent Patrick McCaw and add forward Jonas Jerebko, who was waived by the Utah Jazz recently. In addition, they drafted guard/forward Jacob Evans and reportedly reached a deal to keep fourth-year forward Kevon Looney......»»

FDA warns of toxic skin whiteners

How far would you go to achieve a fair and radiant skin? It appears thousands of Filipinos are willing to take potential health risks on banned beauty products simply because they offer celebrity-like glowing skin and are cheap at that. Take, for instance, skin-whitening and beauty product Goree, which remains popular among Filipino consumers despite findings that it contains high levels of mercury, thanks or no thanks to its affordable price of P150 and hyped efficacy on social media. Notwithstanding warnings from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) against the use of Goree, Ruvilma Entero, who is working overseas, and her friends continued to patronize the product. PBA: Mark Caguioa is now a top-15 all time scorer, but it s more rings he s after

Wednesday night was a historic night for Ginebra Gin Kings guard Mark Caguioa. Aside from helping the Gin Kings to a 134-107 win over Columbian, the decorated vet made history by becoming the 15th all-time leading scorer in PBA history. After finishing with eight points in eleven-and-a-half minutes of action, Caguioa reached a career total of 9,931 points, surpassing PBA great Freddie Hubalde’s 9,927. Truly an amazing feat for the 17-year pro, but at this stage in his career, ‘The Spark’ isn’t too focused on individual honors any longer. After all, the 38-year old has had his share of awards, like a Rookie of the Year trophy in 2001, an MVP trophy in 2012, three Best Player of the Conference nods, just to name a few. Now, the six-time PBA champion is looking to win more rings. “Yung mga individual [feats], I’m okay with it.  Pero you know, when you’re ano na, [at this age], I’m looking for more championships before I retire. Just more championships.” A known scorer for throughout his career, Caguioa maintains that the points will keep coming, but that isn’t his main focus. “Those points, If I play, it will come but I’m not really after anything. So I’m after more championships.” Aside from already taking 15th all-time, Caguioa is also inching closer towards another milestone: ten thousand career points. The 10K Club is a select group of players that include the likes of Ramon Fernandez, Alvin Patrimonio, Robert Jaworski, Benjie Paras to name a few. Just 69 points away, Caguioa could reach that milestone before the end of the conference. But of course, if the Gin Kings want to play even more games, they’ll need to keep winning. Currently sitting at 4-5 and bunched up in the 6-8 seed, Ginebra has two more games left and will have to make sure that they win out. Caguioa maintained however, that his goal isn’t to reach ten thousand career points. For Caguioa, it’s all about the rings. “Like I said, it will come if I play with limited minutes. I will not really go after it. I’m just gonna try to win more championships.”  .....»»

Caguioa downplays milestone, says he’s after more titles than individual feats

It's been almost six years since Mark Caguioa became PBA's poster boy when he won the league MVP in 2012, but that doesn't mean he will be stopped from making history. Caguiao on Wednesday moved into the 15th spot of the all-time scoring list when he reached 9,931 points to surpass 1977 MVP Freddie Hubalde, who had 9,927 points. Getting into the esteemed territory is, of course, a privilege for any player but the 38-year-old Caguioa is looking at the bigger picture.
