Prop Bets Popular for Super Bowl, but NFL Wants Them Gone

ATLANTIC CITY, New Jersey --- Many Americans in places where sports betting is legal for the first time are beginning to make wagers on the Super Bowl, including prop bets on the performances of individual athletes. But if the National Football League had its way, bets on things like passing touchdowns for New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady or rushing yards for Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley would be restricted --- or even outlawed as too risky and vulnerable to manipulation or cheating. Proposition bets --- also known as prop bets --- are less popular during the regular season but gain steam during the Super Bowl each year as a way to bet on the outcome of more ...Keep on reading: Prop Bets Popular for Super Bowl, but NFL Wants Them Gone.....»»

Patriots make 3rd straight Super Bowl, beat Chiefs 37-31 OT

By Barry Wilner, Associated Press KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The New England Patriots are headed to their third straight Super Bowl, once more thanks to Tom Brady's brilliance. The five-time NFL champion guided the Patriots 75 yards after winning the overtime coin toss, and backup Rex Burkhead's 2-yard TD lifted New England past Kansas City 37-31 for the AFC championship Sunday night. The drive against an exhausted defense was reminiscent of when the Patriots beat Atlanta in the only Super Bowl to go to OT two years ago. New England (13-5) benefited from two critical replay reviews and made its ninth Super Bowl with Brady at quarterback and Bill Belichick as coach. Awaiting them in Atlanta are the Los Angeles Rams, who won 26-23 in overtime in New Orleans for the NFC championship. The Rams last made the Super Bowl in 2002 while based in St. Louis, losing to the Patriots. It's the first time both conference title games went to OT. The last time both visitors won conference championship matches was 2012......»»

Jesus keeps up scoring spree as Manchester City dump Wolves

MANCHESTER, England --- Gabriel Jesus kept up his scoring spree for Manchester City with two goals in a 3-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League on Monday, moving the champion back to within four points of Liverpool. The Brazil striker has seven goals across three competitions in the past nine days for City. His opening goal against Wolves was a 10th-minute tap-in following a left-wing cross from Leroy Sane, who was sent free by a searching ball forward from center back Aymeric Laporte. When Wolves defender Willy Boly was sent off in the 19th minute for a dangerous tackle on Bernardo Silva, it quickly became a damage-limitation exercise for the vi...Keep on reading: Jesus keeps up scoring spree as Manchester City dump Wolves.....»»

Jesus keeps up scoring spree, Man City beats Wolves 3-0

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is keeping a close eye on Gabriel Jesus now the young striker's family are no longer with him in England. Maintaining his hot streak in front of goal should keep the Brazilian's spirits high. The 21-year-old Jesus scored twice in City's 3-0 win over 10-man Wolverhampton Wanderers in the Premier League on Monday, extending his spree to seven goals across three different competitions in the past nine days. Whether he can retain City's sole striker spot ahead of club great Sergio Aguero, who started on the bench after a recent illness, remains to be seen but Jesus cannot be doing any more to impress his manager, Pep Guardiola. "I know Sergio Aguero is an amazing player and helps me a lot," Jesus said. "When Sergio plays he helps the team, and when I play I want to help as well. "I play better now and to score goals is important to me." And having two in-form strikers can only boost City's chances of reeling in Liverpool in the Premier League title race. Liverpool's lead was trimmed to four points by City's win over Wolves, for whom the match was a damage-limitation exercise from the moment center back Willy Boly was handed a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Bernardo Silva in the 19th minute. By then, Jesus had tapped in a left-wing cross from Leroy Sane, who was found by a searching ball forward from center back Aymeric Laporte, to put City in front in the 10th minute. Jesus added his second goal from the penalty spot in the 39th after Raheem Sterling was fouled by Ryan Bennett. City piled on the pressure in the second half — it finished the game with 76 percent possession — but had only one more goal to show for it, with Conor Coady glancing a header into his own net from substitute Kevin De Bruyne's cross. Since losing back-to-back league games around the Christmas holiday to drop out of the lead and, at one point, be seven points behind Liverpool, City has been in relentless form — winning five straight matches in all competitions and scoring 24 goals in the process. Among them was a 9-0 win over third-tier Burton in the English League Cup, when Jesus scored four times. Guardiola spoke ahead of the game about the club needing to rally around the striker because he might start to find life difficult after his mother, two older brothers and nephew returned to Brazil following an extended stay in Manchester to help Jesus acclimatize. And teammates Sane and Sterling could not have handed him easier opportunities to continue his scoring run. Wolves were potentially tricky opponents for City, given their strong record against the top six in the league. Nuno Espirito Santo's team drew against City at home in August and recently beat Tottenham. Boly's straight red card put paid to any chance of an upset at Etihad Stadium and Wolves failed to have a shot on target. And neither Boly nor Espirito Santo had any complaints about the decision, with the defender having got the ball in a challenge with Silva only to catch him with the follow-through. "The game 11 vs. 11 was the same as 11 vs. 10," Guardiola said. It was the 16th time this season that City has scored three or more goals. This latest victory moved the champion five points clear of third-placed Tottenham, which lost at home to Manchester United on Sunday. Liverpool will also be wary of City's improved form. "All we can do is win our own games," Guardiola said. "We spoke many times in the last hours about this to our players. We cannot control what they do. We can control what we do. The only way to do that is by being there. Maybe one day they fail and we try to be there. "But you can be sure if we don't win, they will be champions.".....»»

Michel scores 3 TDs, Patriots roll past Chargers 41-28

By Kyle Hightower, Associated Press FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — Sony Michel ran for 129 yards and had three touchdowns and the New England Patriots beat the Los Angeles Chargers 41-28 in the divisional playoffs on Sunday to earn their eighth straight trip to the AFC championship game. New England (12-5) will play at Kansas City in next week's AFC title game. The Patriots beat the Chiefs 43-40 in Foxborough in Week 6. The Patriots finished 9-0 at home this season. It is the 13th conference championship game appearance by the Patriots during the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era. "It's going to be a good game," Brady said of the rematch with the Chiefs. "They're a good team. We played them earlier this year. I know everybody thinks we suck and, you know, we can't win any games, so we'll see. It'll be fun." The Chargers (13-5) haven't reached the AFC title game since the 2007 season. Quarterback Philip Rivers finished 25 of 51 for 331 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He is 0-5 in games played in Foxborough, including 0-3 in the postseason. Brady finished 34 of 44 for 343 yards and a touchdown. He improves to 8-0 as a starter against Rivers, who drops to 1-8 against New England all-time. James White tied Darren Sproles' NFL postseason record with 15 catches, totaling 97 yards. New England scored on its first four possessions of the game to build a 35-7 halftime lead. Julian Edelman had nine catches for 151 yards. The Chargers added three touchdowns in the second half , but it was much too late. Los Angeles lost for just the second time on the road (8-2) and first time outside Los Angeles this season. In its past four trips to the playoffs, Los Angeles has lost in the divisional round. "We dug ourselves a hole in the first half," Chargers coach Anthony Lynn said. "One game doesn't define where we are as a football team." Rivers seemed poised to keep Los Angeles in the game, connecting with Keenan Allen for a 43-yard score on Los Angeles' first offensive possession. It was the longest touchdown of Allen's career, including the postseason. It turned out to be just a blip. The Chargers punted the four other times they had the ball in the first half. The Patriots were efficient throughout the opening 30 minutes, going 5 for 5 in the red zone, 5 of 6 on third down and committing only one penalty. New England didn't go three-and-out for the first time until its fifth offensive touch of the day when it punted with 3:32 left in the second quarter. But Ryan Allen's 48-yard punt was fumbled by Desmond King , sending the ball rolling toward the sideline. The referees ruled the ball went out of bounds before New England's Albert McClellan appeared to recover it. But the play was reversed after a challenge by Bill Belichick. The turnover proved costly, with the Patriots scoring just four plays later when Michel crossed the goal line from 5 yards for his third touchdown of the half. New England established the run early, creating big holes in a Chargers defense that ended the regular season ranked ninth in the NFL, allowing just 106 rushing yards per game. Michel carried 16 times for 105 yards in the first half. He set the tone early, scoring from 1 yard on the opening possession of the game. It capped a 14-play, 83-yard drive in which he rushed five times for 15 yards and had a 9-yard reception. The Patriots added scoring drives of 67, 58, 87 and 35 yards. MILESTONES Michel became just the second Patriots rookie in franchise history to have a rushing touchdown in the postseason. He joined fellow Georgia alum, Robert Edwards, who ran for a touchdown as a rookie in New England's 1998 wild-card loss to Jacksonville. Michel also became the first New England player with two rushing TDs in the first quarter of a playoff game since LeGarrette Blount did it in the 2013 divisional-round win against Indianapolis. Brady extended his postseason record with his 15th career 300-yard passing game. Next is Peyton Manning with nine. STREAKING Brady has a touchdown pass in 13 straight postseason games, tied for the third-longest streak since 1950. Only Brett Favre (20) and Brady himself (18 from 2001-11) have longer streaks. INJURIES Chargers: Safety Adrian Phillips was helped off the field early in the first quarter with an arm injury, but returned. Receiver Mike Williams jogged off the field after a collision in the first quarter. Patriots: Guard Shaq Mason left the game in the fourth quarter......»»

Saints rally past Eagles 20-14, will host NFC title game

By Barry Wilner, Associated Press NEW ORLEANS (AP) — When the New Orleans Saints finally found their rhythm, they marched one step closer to the Super Bowl. Using a dominant ball-control offense and a few gambles that paid off, the Saints got two touchdown passes from Drew Brees and two interceptions from Marcus Lattimore in a 20-14 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Brees took the Saints on scoring drives of 92, 79 and 67 yards after falling behind 14-0. Lattimore clinched it when Nick Foles' pass from the Saints 27 deflected off usually sure-handed receiver Alshon Jeffery with about two minutes remaining. A couple dozen Saints players surged off the sideline toward the end zone in celebration, while Jeffery fell face-first to the turf in agony. New Orleans (14-3) will host the NFC title game next week against the Rams (13-4). Los Angeles, which fell 45-35 at the Superdome in November, will try again next week, with the winner going to the Super Bowl. The Saints' win finished off a sweep of the divisional round by teams coming off byes. Wil Lutz added two field goals for the Saints, who last got this far in 2009, when they won the Super Bowl. Philadelphia (10-8) will not repeat as NFL champion; no team has done so since the 2004 Patriots. This was really two games in one. Philly scored on its first two drives as the Saints could do virtually nothing right. After that, it was all New Orleans, but the resilient Eagles kept it close enough that when Lutz missed a 52-yard field goal with 2:58 remaining, they were only one-score behind. Foles, the hero of last year's Super Bowl run, got them in position for yet another late winning score — just like last week at Chicago and last February against New England for the championship. Then, Jeffery couldn't handle a second-down pass, and it was over. Brees had 2-yard touchdown passes to rookie Keith Kirkwood and All-Pro wideout Michael Thomas, who had 12 receptions for 171 yards. UGLY START Maybe the Saints were rusty after their wild-card bye, but they got two first downs, including one by penalty, gained 17 yards, and Brees threw an interception and had a fumble that was recovered by teammate Ryan Ramczyk in the opening period. Meanwhile, Philly gained 153 yards and scored two TDs, and Foles went 8 of 9 for 113. But Foles was intercepted by Lattimore early in the second quarter, and the Saints finally got going. INJURIES In a span of three plays, two starters were hurt and needed to be carted off. First, Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins went down midway in the first quarter, unable to put any weight on his left foot. Two plays later, Eagles right guard Brandon Brooks hurt his right leg and departed. Philly also lost DB Rasul Douglas in the second quarter to an ankle injury, but he was back in the second half. DLs Fletcher Cox, an All-Pro, and Michael Bennett also were sidelined at times before returning. In the fourth quarter, left tackle Jason Peters left. UP NEXT The Saints host the Rams in the late game next Sunday, with the winner going to the Super Bowl......»»

Azkals coach cancels dinner plans with old foe after PH’s 3-0 loss to China

Sour Swede Sven-Goran Eriksson scrapped dinner plans with old foe Marcello Lippi after China thrashed his Philippines side 3-0 on Friday to reach the last 16 of the Asian Cup. China's star striker Wu Lei fired a brilliant double against the Filipino 'Street Dogs' in Abu Dhabi as Lippi emerged victorious in a heavyweight coaching clash. But Eriksson had little stomach for the old pals' act when the septuagenarians embraced after the match. "No, no dinner plans," snapped the former England manager.
