Olynyk s putback off Wade s miss lifts Heat past Wiz 113-112

By Howard Fendrich, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Kelly Olynyk’s putback of Dwyane Wade’s missed jumper produced the go-ahead basket with 0.2 seconds left Thursday night (Friday, PHL time), lifting the Miami Heat to a ragged 113-112 comeback victory over the Washington Wizards, who were without new center Dwight Howard for their season opener. 🚨GAME WINNER ALERT🚨@KellyOlynyk puts the Wizards away! pic.twitter.com/Euoik9BCIq — Miami HEAT (@MiamiHEAT) October 19, 2018 Olynyk was booed every time he touched the ball, on account of a past playoff fracas with the Wizards back when he was with the Boston Celtics. But he certainly got to enjoy the way this game ended, after Miami trailed by as many as nine points. Josh Richardson led Miami with 28 points, Rodney McGruder added 20, and the Heat hit consecutive three's late in the fourth quarter. With Howard sidelined by a sore backside, the Wizards were led by old standby John Wall, who delivered 26 points and nine assists. He and fellow All-Star guard Bradley Beal, who scored 20 points, accounted for Washington’s last eight points. But with a 112-111 lead, Wall missed a 26-foot pull-up jumper, giving Miami a chance. Wade’s shot with about three seconds left was off the mark, but Olynyk grabbed the rebound and his layup won it. The Heat were playing on the second night of a back-to-back — they lost at Orlando on Wednesday (Thursday, PHL time) — and Wade appeared in both games, scoring nine each night. He shot a combined 7 for 24. Wizards coach Scott Brooks put an emphasis on pleading with his players to shoot more three's this season. Didn’t work. At least not in Game 1. Washington was only 7-for-26 from beyond the arc. Wall led the way with 18 points as Washington went into halftime ahead 59-58. And after Miami briefly went up in the third quarter, the Wizards used a 10-point run midway through the period to enter the fourth with an 89-85 edge. They couldn’t hold on. TIP-INS Heat: Coach Eric Spoelstra was asked about Wade, 36, appearing in both ends of a back-to-back to open the season. “Right now, it’s Game 2. He wants to play. We want him to play,” Spoelstra said. “And he’s in great shape, he feels good, so he’s able to go.” ... G Wayne Ellington (ankle) was active but did not play. Wizards: Ian Mahnimi started for Howard, but picked up his fourth foul 15 seconds into the third quarter. By quarter’s end, four Wizards — three starters — each had four personal fouls. ... F Kelly Oubre Jr. was the first substitute used by Washington, entering for Otto Porter Jr. midway through the first quarter. TOLIVER’S DEBUT WNBA All-Star Kristi Toliver made her regular-season debut as an assistant coach on Scott Brooks’ staff. “I love her. Our staff loves her. Our players feel the same way,” Brooks said. “She adds value to our program. She’s very talented. She loves the game. She’s passionate. And she wants to learn. She has this incredible desire to get better.” NO HOWARD This was the first game Howard missed for a health reason since the 2016-17 season. He appeared in 81 of 82 games last season with Charlotte, missing one because of a suspension. “He’s getting close,” Brooks said. “We just don’t feel like he’s quite there yet. Like I said a few weeks ago, we’re in no rush. We just want to make sure that he’s comfortable — we’re comfortable — going forward.” UP NEXT Heat: Host Charlotte on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) in their home opener. Wizards: Host Toronto on Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) in a rematch from last season’s playoffs. The Raptors eliminated the Wizards in the first round......»»

San Beda now NCAA 94 top-seed after imposing will on LPU

San Beda University has had to wait a long time just to get back at Lyceum of the Philippines University in the elimination round. The Red Lions finally exacted their revenge on Thursday at the Filoil Flying V Centre, forcing the Pirates to play at their pace for majority of the matchup before falling back on their championship experience in the endgame for a well-earned 75-68 win. Robert Bolick, of course, spearheaded the attack and had running mate Javee Mocon as well as promising rookie James Canlas right beside him as the defending champions seized the top-seed for the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Baskeball Tournament. As the top-seed, they will be facing off with fourth-seed University of Perpetual Help in the next round. “I’m happy that the guys played well today. Hopefully, we play more consistent in our next games,” head coach Boyet Fernandez said. It was Canlas’ layup that punctuated the 17-9 run that broke the game open and built up a 35-24 San Beda lead in the second quarter. Bolick and Mocon then joined in on the fun in the third, conspiring for a 12-2 rush that boosted their team in front, 51-33, at the midway mark of the quarter. The Pirates didn’t quit and ramped up the pressure in the final frame with MJ Ayaay’s fastbreak layup pulling them within 68-73 with 36.8 ticks to go. After Spencer Pretta turned the ball over, though, the Red Lions’ graduating guard made good on two free throws to put the game away. This is the first time in the last two years that Bolick and company have triumphed over their new challengers in the eliminations. “We’re happy we got this one and that the monkey is finally off our backs. Ang daming nagsasabing we cannot beat them,” their mentor said. In the end, the King Lion had 18 points, five rebounds, and two assists while Canlas had his own 18 markers and six boards. Mocon and Donald Tankoua both contributed double-doubles as well with the former finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds and the latter ending with 15 markers and 14 boards. More than that, however, it was the defense that keyed the defending champions’ big-time win. Indeed, the best defense in the league suffocated LPU to way below their 87.6 points per game and CJ Perez to way below his 19.2 markers per game. Perez only had nine points to go along with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals in this one while Mike Nzeusseu topped the scoring column with 16 markers and six boards. Unable to break free from their opponents’ suffocating defense, the Pirates sank to 15-3 and settled for the second-seed. They will be matchup up opposite Colegio de San Juan de Letran. NCAA: Perez, LPU excited to play in their first-ever Final Four

Last year, Lyceum of the Philippines University went straight to the Finals in the NCAA after sweeping the elimination rounds. This Season 94, after dropping three games against University of Perpetual Help, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, and San Beda University, the Pirates will have to go through the tough Final Four format before they get the chance to avenge their heartbreaking bridesmaid run last season. Second-seed Lyceum's situation may not look as pristine as last year's, but CJ Perez thinks going through the eye of the needle will be better for them. "Sa aming lahat, excited kami maglaro sa Final Four. And yun nga, mas maganda itong ganito kasi kailangan mong dumaan sa mga adversities na kailangan mo lagpasan ang Letran muna," said Perez as they are set to face the third-seed Letran on October 26 for the semifinals. This, even though in their game against San Beda on Thursday, the Pirates struggled with the Red Lions' zone defense. Perez who usually scores 19.1 points per game was limited to only nine points. When asked about it, Perez bared that he was not feeling good about his game right from the get-go. "Actually 'di yung sila yung naka-stop sa akin. Feeling ko sarili ko yung nai-stop ko kasi yun nga, pagpasok pa lang ng game, parang 'di ko ramdam na magaan yung katawan ko today. Feeling ko ang tight ko ngayon so parang pumasok sa utak ko tapos nawala ako sa focus," said Perez after playing his last eliminations game in his college career. San Beda led by as much as 20 points late in the third quarter, but Lyceum was able to inch within five points with less than a minute to go in the game. Ultimately, however, things didn't go their way as turnovers got the best of them. Still, Perez didn't point fingers at anyone. "Sa mga ganitong talo hindi kami nagsisisihan, wala kaming excuses. Siguro yun yung na build na culture sa Lyceum. Kahit na nagtatalo, walang nagsisisihan, walang excuses, kaya mas maganda mag move forward kung yun yung na build na culture sa amin," he shared. "Pero may bawi naman yan eh, 'di naman every game talaga Pasko eh. 'Di naman laging Pasko," he added. His game today may have been uncharacteristic, but he assures that come the semifinals, the CJ Perez that fans all know of will be back. "Andito naman yung tunay na CJ Perez. 'Di ko naman talaga mabubuhat yung team kung ako lang talaga. So kailangan lang mag work together. Siguro sabihin natin bad day siguro kaya ganun pero I'm okay naman," he said......»»

Finally, that LPU monkey is off of San Beda s back in NCAA 94

The last time San Beda University defeated Lyceum of the Philippines University in the elimination round was in 2016. Since that time, the Pirates have had the number of the Red Lions – again, in the elimination round. The traditional powerhouse finally got one over the upstart contenders on Thursday, imposing its will en route to a well-earned 75-68 win. This is the first time in the last two years that they have triumphed over their new challengers in the eliminations. For that, of course, San Beda is nothing but glad. “We’re happy we got this one and that the monkey is finally off our backs,” head coach Boyet Fernandez told reporters post-game. He then continued, “Everybody’s been saying that we cannot beat LPU so that was really our motto for today. Naging barometer namin yun and I’m happy the guys stepped up today.” Humble as always, coach Boyet deflected credit for the win to his boys. “I salute the boys and sana, we continue playing this well,” he said. In fact, the always amiable mentor even gave credit to other coaches. As he put it, “I do thank the coaches from other teams because I watch their games. I say how the two teams beat Lyceum so I think we got the cue from that.” Coach Boyet was referring to University of Perpetual Help and Colegio de San Juan de Letran, which both beat LPU before the Red Lions. “Ayan naman ang trabaho at saka ng scouting,” he said. Nonetheless, the defending champions still had nothing but respect for the felled foes. “It’s a tough game, they’re a really tough team. Good job to coach Topex [Robinson] and the rest of the LPU team,” their head coach said. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»
