PBA: Almazan plays clutch as Meralco downs Magnolia

Raymond Almazan delivered at crunch time to tow Meralco to a 98-92 win over reigning champion Magnolia on Saturday in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Big Dome. The Bolts forward played the hero’s role in the last two and a half minutes of the ballgame, sinking the go-ahead triple and pouring 12 of his 19 points in the fourth period. Almazan broke a 92-92 deadlock with a trey with 2:27 remaining and added a split from the foul line to spark Meralco’s closing 6-0 run.  “It's a good start to the conference for us. It's a very, very satisfying win because we know we're going up against the defending champions,” said Meralco coach Norman Black. “We also knew they're a very good defensive team and we had to play good defense to be able to beat them.” Chris Newsome finished with a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds while import Allen Durham flirted with a triple-double with 21 markers, 14 boards and eight assists for Meralco. Almazan had 19 points, 13 rebounds and a crucial block on Mark Barroca’s layup in the last 17 seconds to crush the Hotshots’ desperate attempt to salvage the game. Meralco stated off slow and trailed, 33-49, in the second quarter before coming back in the second half. Ian Sangalang gave Magnolia its last taste of the lead 92-86, off a jumper with 4:40 left before Meralco answered with a 12-point swing. “I thought our defense really kicked in in the fourth quarter,” said Black. “We were able to slow them down and stop them on a lot of plays that made a lot of difference in the game.” Romeo Travis had 22 markers and nine rebounds while Paul Lee had 20 for the Hotshots. Barroca finished with 18 and Peter June Simon got 12 for Magnolia.   The scores:  Meralco (98) -- Newsome 22, Durham 11; Almazan 19, Pinto 9, Faundo 8, Amer 7, Salva 4, Quinto 3, Hugnatan 3, Caram 2. TERRIFIC 12: Lance says there’s no beef after minor spat with Beermen

MACAU — PBA players somehow continue to get under the skin of Lance Stephenson in the East Asia Super League’s The Terrific 12 tournament. First it was TNT’s David Semerad and on Saturday during the semifinals against the Beermen, Stephenson got some minor spats with Chris Ross and Kelly Nabong. The Liaoning star was in a trash talking contest with Nabong. Lance was also called for a double technical foul with Ross in the third period after a Stephenson basket put the Flying Leopards up, 55-32. Stephenson is taking a pretty easy approach despite the shenanigans against him though. “I played hard all the time, I did it with the best of them. Other guys will come out there and play their hardest against me,” Stephenson said. “They know they’re playing against me, so I just gotta be smart,” he added. When Stephenson feels like opposing players are out to get him, he will stand up to protect himself. However, he insists he’s not taking things personal and everything’s good after the game. “I gotta protect myself. I don’t want to fight but I’m gonna protect myself,” Stephenson said. “It was no hard feelings, no beef. We shake hands after the game. We’re playing hard to win, once the game is over, shake hands and go our ways,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Black lauds Almazan’s ‘best game’ since joining Meralco

Meralco head coach Norman Black had nothing but praise for big man Raymond Almazan’s game on Saturday. The mentor felt that Almazan delivered his breakout game since joining the Bolts back in May of this year with clutch plays in Meralco’s 98-92 opening day victory over defending champion Magnolia in the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup at the Big Dome.    ”This is probably the best game of Raymond Almazan since he joined our team,” said Black of his ward, whose fourth quarter explosion spelled the difference in the duel. Almazan broke a 92-92 deadlock with a trey in the last 2:27 of the match and added a split from the foul line to fuel Meralco’s late game barrage. He capped his night with a crucial defensive stop, swatting away Mark Barroca’s layup attempt with 17 ticks left that crushed the comeback hopes of the Hotshots.    “Kasi pinaghandaan ko din eh. 100% na (dapat) ready physically and mentally, so kailangan eh. Di na rin tayo pa-bata eh,” said Almazan, who is fresh from a tour of duty with Gilas Pilipinas in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China. "May mga bagong batang pumapasok—mas malakas, mas bata, mas athletic. So kailangang i-rise up natin yung game natin." Almazan finished with 19 points -- 12 coming in the payoff period -- in 7-of-11 field goal shooting.   “I'm happy for Raymond, I'm happy that he came out and really came up with some big plays for us tonight,” said Black. Almazan also grabbed 13 boards, had two assists and a block for Meralco. Black just hopes that Almazan would stay healthy throughout the conference. “Last conference he joined us after he was out with an injury for 10 weeks. Everybody expected him to come back and play well immediately, but a lot of people didn't know that about a week after, he re-injured his calf in practice, which set him back,” said Black. “Then when he finally recovered from that, he got sick and was out for another four days. He really could not get his bearings in the last conference, but I wasn't really concerned about that 'cause I knew he was new to the team and he really didn't know the system that well,” added Black. “But we've had a chance now to get him comfortable with the team.”   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles  .....»»

UAAP 82: Lady Warriors deal Lady Maroons 35th defeat in a row

ANTIPOLO -- University of the East denied University of the Philippines from earning history at its expense, pulling off the 68-66 victory Saturday in the UAAP Season 82 Women's Basketball Tournament at Ynares Center here. Queen Ordas drilled the go-ahead three-point play that put the Lady Warriors up, 66-63 with 1:43 left to play as the Lady Maroons failed to convert on their end. With UP forced to foul in the waning seconds, Princess Pedregosa calmly sank her charities to make it a five-point game, 68-63 for UE with 11.6 ticks on the clock. Pesky Pesquera buried a trey on the other end to cut the lead down to two, but the Lady Warriors were just too slick as the Lady Maroons failed to foul as the buzzer horned. UE finally snapped its four-game losing skid to win its breakthrough victory this year, while keeping UP winless at 0-5 and continuing its 35-game losing skid. "Syempre, yun ang pinaka-pressure sa amin na may losing streak sila. Rebuilding kami pero yung players namin, mas beterano kaysa sa UP, kaya kung kaya naming kunin, kunin dapat namin," said coach Aileen Lebornio. Tin Cortizano led the Lady Warriors with 19 points, seven rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block, while Nins Cuadero got 14 points and nine boards. Pedregosa also did her share with 13 points and 10 rebounds, Ordas got nine points and 11 boards, as Lebornio lauded the standout showing of playmaker Jearzy Ganade, who tallied nine points, 12 assists, and five rebounds for UE. "Last four games namin, doon kami pinapatay. Sabi ko sa kanya, dalhin mo yung team. Wag kang matakot magkamali. Pag nagkamali ka, mali ko yun," said Lebornio. Pesquera topped the Lady Maroons with 22 points on a 4-of-7 shooting from deep, to go with her 10 rebounds and four assists, while Stiff Larrosa had 16 points, four boards, and two dimes. UAAP 82: UP clamps down on Suerte to claim third straight W

ANTIPOLO - The University of the Philippines did not try its luck, Saturday at Ynares Center here, pulling out all the stops to cool down Rey Suerte before pulling off a 62-56 triumph over University of the East. The Fighting Maroons set all of their sights on Suerte, the one-and-done star who has taken the UAAP 82 Men's Basketball Tournament by storm, to score their third consecutive victory and fourth overall in five games. "Our intention was really to limit his output," head coach Bo Perasol said post-game. At the other end, Javi Gomez de Liano waxed hot from the get-go, firing seven of his 15 points in State U's blazing 12-3 beginning. Bright Akhuetie and Kobe Paras then joined in on the fun as UP built up a lead of as much as 13 in the second quarter. The Red Warriors regrouped at the half, however, and even came as close as one point, 56-57, inside the last two minutes. It was at that point that Paras found a wide open Jaydee Tungcab at the corner who wasted no time swishing home the triple. That, as well as a split from the stripe and then a defense that allowed no more makes finished off the Fighting Maroons' wire-to-wire win that keeps them at solo second. Paras wound up with a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double while Akhuetie stuffed the stat sheet with 16 markers, five boards, three assists, three steals, and a block. Tungcab also added four points all while serving as the primary defender to Suerte who was frustrated to only four makers in 2-of-15 shooting to go along with four turnovers. "In the end, it was Jaydee that saved us with his three in the corner and his game-long brilliance in defending Rey Suerte helped us a lot," coach Bo said. Ricci Rivero, Noah Webb, David Murrell, and James Spencer also did their part against the talented transferee from University of Visayas who was coming off a 31-point outing against De La Salle University, including the game-winner. In Suerte's stead, Senegalese powerhouse Alex Diakhite paced UE with monster numbers of 21 points, 17 rebounds, and five assists. Missing their main man, though, they were unable to build on their breakthrough win and dropped down to 1-4. BOX SCORES UP 62 - Akhuetie 16, Ja. Gomez de Liano 15, Paras 12, Rivero 7, Tungcab 4, Ju.
