After seven years of not staging a major hair show, the Philippine branch of the multinational beauty company L’Oreal returned with a vengeance through its Professionnel global hair care brand’s presentation titled Unleash the Future You. The hair show was held on 27 July at the Grand Ballroom of Okada Manila hotel in Parañaque City, featuring world-renowned hair stylists and colorists Min Kim and Raman Bhardwaj. [caption id="attachment_163215" align="aligncenter" width="1620"] World-Renowned hair stylist and colorist Raman Bhardwa (middle).[/caption] [caption id="attachment_163216" align="aligncenter" width="1620"] L'OREAL Professionnel global ambassador Min Kim.[/caption] “It’s our biggest and grandest,” declared L’Oreal Philippines Professionnel products division general manager Brian Duruin in his opening remarks. “We’re here to celebrate the resilience of our professional hair industry in its continued recovery in the post-pandemic era.” He then lauded the efforts of salon owners and workers in hurdling the obstacles brought by the Covid-19 pandemic, from trying out online hair consultations to offering the same services in limited capacities. “You are not just survivors, you are victors.” Hair coloring advice and demo Bhardwaj, who is L’Oreal Professionnel India’s artistic ambassador, opened the show with his models in all-black outfits, including actress Coleen Garcia. He demonstrated on stage, using a dolly head, how he achieved the two looks featured in his collection. He also gave practical advice, such as making sure to do a consultation with clients because it is an opportunity to build a clientele. Then Kim, as L’Oreal Professionnel global ambassador, took the stage by storm with her models in all-white outfits, including social media personality Bella Racelis. She also did a demo on how she achieved the looks in her collection while talking about French balayage. It is a hair coloring technique that takes root from the French word for “sweep.” “The first time I tried balayage, I thought it was terrible,” admitted Kim, who’s been an expert hair colorist based on Fifth Avenue in New York City. “I was more into foiling. So I started investing on my education. I realized it was balayage that was terrible, it was me who was terrible.” She then mastered the art that has made her clients happy and satisfied. Kim also met the press backstage before the show and shared how it feels like to be on top her game: “The fact that I’m an Asian woman representing the largest beauty product in the world is I’m super proud of. It’s something that I want to continue to help empower women, not just Asian women but women from all over the world." The post Mane attractions appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Funny old world: The week’s offbeat news
From a lion on the loose around Berlin to Indonesia's most controversial newlyweds... Your weekly roundup of offbeat stories from around the world. Bye, bye Bella It has been a dog of a week for man's best friend. Take Bella, the Mexican mongrel who survived two months adrift in the Pacific with her owner Australian sailor Timothy Shaddock. He said the pair survived "many, many, many bad days" on their storm-struck boat with only rainwater to drink and raw fish he caught to eat. But Bella, who shared his unrelenting sushi diet, kept his spirits up. "That dog is something else," he told reporters. "She is a lot braver than I am. She's amazing." So amazing in fact that Shaddock left the stray behind to return to Oz. Cue a growling kennel of consternation at the captain "abandoning" his shipmate. Walkies will never be the same The days of carefree pooping on the pavement could be over for French poodles after a hardline mayor introduced mandatory DNA testing to track dirty dogs. Robert Menard said he was forced to act after street cleaners counted 1,000 turds in the center of the southern town of Beziers. Police can now analyze doggy dejections to tail owners who fail to pick up after their pets. They will be made to pay 120 euros ($135) to clean up the mess. Just barking Two Indonesian dog owners who married their mutts in a lavish "wedding" in a Jakarta mall faced howls of disapproval. The pair shelled out 200 million rupiah ($13,350) -- more than 40 times the minimum monthly wage -- on the bash, in which they dressed their Alaskan Malamutes in traditional Javanese costumes. It didn't help that one of the women worked for President Joko Widodo, who has been lecturing the rich about not flaunting their cash as the country's wealth gap widens. "It's wasting money and defying God," one angry Twitter user wrote as the backlash grew. "Common sense has gone, trampled by the desire to show off." Bedroom Olympics With Paris being the "City of Love", you can see why some might worry how the cardboard beds the athletes will sleep on at next year's Olympics will stand up to the rigors of the planet's most high-performance physiques. But the beds' Japanese maker Motokuni Takaoka tried to prove that they can take "several people" at the same time by jumping up and down on one to calm claims that the singles were "anti-sex". "They can support several people on top", which is what can happen "when someone wins a medal", Airweave founder Takaoka said. Motivation Kyrgyz style It's summer holiday time in Kyrgyzstan, but heaven help any government minister who tries to kick back. "There shouldn't be a single minister lying on the beach in shorts and sunbathing. Don't let me see this," warned Kamchybek Tashiyev, the head of the Central Asian nation's feared GKNB security service. The spymaster, the iron fist of President Sadyr Japarov, has also outlawed lie-ins. He said he wanted to see ministers at their desks by 6:00 am. "We must work hard. We must not rest... If you become ministers, then work," he growled. How this has gone down around the cabinet table is not known. But the former Soviet republic has seen three revolutions and numerous political crises in less than two decades. Ich bin Lion Berliner To Berlin, where police feared a lioness was on the loose after a man filmed what appeared to be a big cat chasing a wild boar down a suburban street. Worried locals were urged to stay indoors, with one dog owner telling German media: "I have two little dachshunds. They are probably ideal lion food." Wild pigs are a menace around the German capital, with one famously filmed stealing a computer from a man sitting in a city park, with the chase going viral. Wags inevitably wondered if the boar had taken the lion's laptop. But police called off the hunt for the lion after 24 hours, saying the mystery beast was probably a boar. Berlin's dachshunds can finally breathe easy. The post Funny old world: The week’s offbeat news appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
NU Lady Bulldogs will get 8 slots on national volley team
At least eight players from National University will see action for the new Philippine women’s volleyball team set to participate in three international tournaments this year. Newly-appointed head coach Norman Miguel told Daily Tribune on Sunday that the team has already committed to the Philippine National Volleyball Federation’s call for the formation of a new national squad. The Lady Bulldogs, who finished runners-up in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85, have already withdrawn their participation in the coming Shakey’s Super League National Invitationals later this month. “We are not participating in the SSL Invitational because NU players committed to PNVF National Women’s Team tournaments this August,” Miguel said. Brazilian head coach Jorge Souza de Brito will select the Lady Bulldogs that will compose the majority of the national team competing in the two legs of the ASEAN Grand Prix in Da Lat, Vietnam and Chiang Mai, Thailand next month. The Nationals will also play in the Asian Volleyball Confederation Asian Sr. Women’s Championship in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand opening on 2 September. “It’s not the whole NU team. I think at least eight players from NU will be part of the National Team to play in the Grand Prix in Vietnam and Thailand and the AVC Asian Senior Women’s in Thailand also,” Miguel said. “But as of this time (we don’t know who will be selected yet), probably when we start the training that’s the time Coach Jorge and the other coaches will decide who will be included in the roster. But most probably it would include the core of NU’s first six.” UAAP Season 84 Rookie of the Year and Most Valuable Player Bella Belen, Alyssa Solomon, setter Lams Lamina, Sheena Toring, Vangie Alinsug and Erin Pangilinan are expected to be included in the list of names for the national team. It will be the second time that the PNVF and NU will strike a national team partnership after the botched 2022 squad that was supposed to join the Asian Volleyball Confederation Cup which the country hosted last year. The federation released 12 of the NU players included in the 14-woman Nationals due to ‘commitment issues.’ Club team Creamline replaced the dissolved national squad. It is uncertain, however, if the new national team will also be representing the country in the Hangzhou Asian Games slated to run from 28 September to 8 October. Ecuadoran woman who woke up during wake is really dead now
An elderly Ecuadoran woman who woke up inside a coffin at her own wake -- sparking a viral video, of course -- has now died for real, authorities said Sunday. A video posted on social media last week shows Bella Montoya, 76, in her open coffin breathing heavily while two men assist her. Her son, Gilbert Barbera, said she had been banging on the inside of the casket, desperate to get out as her relatives mourned her. She had been erroneously declared dead on June 9. After the ordeal at the wake, Montoya was kept in the hospital in the town of Babahoyo. She died of a stroke on Friday, the regional health department said. "This time my mother really did die," Barbera was quoted as saying by the newspaper El Universo. "My life will not be the same." The Health Ministry has ordered a probe into how she was declared dead in error the first time. Local news reports said Montoya suffered from a condition called catalepsy, in which a person loses sensation and consciousness and the body becomes rigid. Louis Vuitton braves rain on its Italian island paradise
Louis Vuitton valiantly battled pounding rain on an Italian island paradise while presenting its cruise collection Wednesday night, the weather sending celebrity guests underneath umbrellas and dampening a hairdo or two. But when you're the flagship brand within the powerhouse LVMH portfolio, with a guest list that includes Catherine Deneuve, Cate Blanchett, and Emma Stone, what's a little rain? Bad weather was likely not top of mind when the storied luxury label led by Nicolas Ghesquiere chose the tiny Isola Bella, a jewel of an island in the azure waters of Lake Maggiore, as an appropriately jaw-dropping venue for its Cruise 2024 collection. But the rain arrived nonetheless, forcing the show originally planned for the island's formal terraced gardens to take place within the baroque Palazzo Borromeo, still owned by the family of the same name whose noble ancestry dates to the 13th century. "It's the one thing Nicolas can't control, is the weather," the editor-in-chief of Vogue Thailand, Ford Laosuksri, told AFP after the show, as guests lingered to sip bubbly while hoping (in vain) for the rain to stop. Laosuksri was wearing a crocheted floral top and sandals -- an endearing if not foolhardy gesture amid the steady rain. "I didn't want to ruin my velvet shoes," he confided. Ghesquiere, Louis Vuitton's artistic director since 2013, sent models through the ornate, high-ceilinged rooms of the 17th-century palazzo in eclectic, futuristic creations for which he is celebrated. Some looks recalled scuba gear adorned with avant-garde ruffling, while others felt like fencers' uniforms, protective with thick quilting over the chest. Fabric was cinched tight like an accordion at the bodice of a sleeveless dress with color blocks in royal blue and yellow gold, imparting texture and movement, while a shiny black dress came with a drawstring neckline that called to mind a popular handbag by the brand. Sweaters became more airy with a translucent stripe at the midriff, while three chiffon gowns cut on the bias -- in dusty pink, sea green and baby blue -- sported exaggerated puffy sleeves worthy of the Edwardian age. "It was beautiful, it was flowy but still powerful," said Philippine actress Heart Evangelista. Louis Vuitton's event was the first-ever fashion show allowed on Isola Bella, a former fishing village transformed by the Borromeos into a sumptuous paradise fit for royalty. Kings, queens, and emperors have been guests at Palazzo Borromeo over the years, including Queen Victoria, Napoleon and Josephine, and even Prince Charles and Princess Diana in 1985. On Wednesday celebrities and influencers from around the world -- including US actress Jennifer Connelly and Felix from K-Pop's Stray Kids -- descended on the island. Trying not to slip, guests took cover under the transparent umbrellas provided by the brand before escaping into the palazzo. Following the show, some guests stood on benches and posed for pictures under the watchful gaze of centuries of Borromeo elders whose portraits line the walls. Cruise collections are designed to offer warm-weather wardrobes for jet-setters lucky enough to escape to sunny locales during the drab winter months. In recent years, they have become destination events, with brands choosing more and more exotic spots to backdrop their luxury looks. Louis Vuitton's show comes on the heels of Dior's, which showed a Frida Kahlo-inspired cruise collection in Mexico City Saturday, and Chanel's earlier this month at Hollywood's Paramount Studios. Ex-Solsona SB member in hot water (2)
Mark Dennis del Castillo, one of the accused in the P23-million botched social housing project in Solsona, Ilocos Norte, reached out to Daily Tribune on Wednesday, 10 May, to air his side of the story. Del Castillo, in a recorded interview, says that the project papers were started in 2016 when De Lara was the mayor but initiated during the administration of Mayor Alex Calucag. Del Castillo claimed that De Lara was still the mayor when he started processing the papers on the project while Calucag was still an ABC president. When the administration changed, Calucag gave the go signal to the project with him and Del Castillo going to the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s regional office to ask for their help. Del Castillo says that what the local government unit will do is indicated in the memorandum of agreement between the LGU and DSWD. In December 2016, Del Castillo was in Hawaii when the funds were deposited to the account of the Neighborhood Association for Shelter Assistance, the group of housing recipients. “It was not on my account that the funds were deposited and, thus, I do not have the authority to withdraw such money. Because the only signatories there are the MSWDO (municipal social welfare and development officer), the representative of the regional office in the person of Ms. Cynthia Ablog, who is the provincial operations officer of DSWD, and the President and the Treasurer of NASA. They are the ones who withdrew the money, not me,” Del Castillo says. Del Castillo clarified the P21 million given to him by them, referring to the above-mentioned individuals. Withdrawal came sometime between January of 2017 and Del Castillo helped them all throughout the process. It was required by the DSWD to open an account for NASA. Del Castillo says he borrowed P10,000 to open the account with LandBank. Yet they haven’t returned the money to him. Del Castillo says he does not see anything wrong there. Cynthia Ablog, Bella Ballesteros, Reynald Campanano and Mr. Raymundo were the people who opened the account. Withdrawal slip clarified In the interview, Del Castillo admitted that he deposited the P21 million to his account. He explained that officers of NASA told him to go to LandBank-Laoag Rizal. When he arrived in the bank, officers of NASA hand-carried and handed the money to him. “It is not true that I clandestinely asked the officers of NASA to sign the withdrawal form. Why would I be the one to hand them over the withdrawal slip? I am not a bank employee,” Del Castillo adds. According to Del Castillo, he deposited the money to his account for safe-keeping and in less than a week, all materials were paid. He was also accompanied by members of NASA and DSWD and all the receipts are now with DSWD. On 25 August 2022, the DSWD wrote a demand letter to Del Castillo, Campanano, Raymundo, Ablog and Ballesteros, informing them that based on the joint validation and inspection conducted on 20 to 29 July 2022 by the LGU of Solsona and the DSWD, P3,835,701.97 of the funds for the said project were not utilized and unliquidated. In the said demand letter signed by DSWD Regional Director Marie Angela S. Gopalan, the agency gave the respondents 10 days to return the money. Del Castillo, however, alleges that the LGU did not fulfill the technical aspect of the project as they did not provide an engineer, foreman and skilled workers. Being the Committee Chairman on Housing, he provided for the wages of a foreman, a skilled worker and two laborers. “I indicated all my expenses to the DSWD and if we base it on computations and all, the DSWD is the one who owes me money worth P5 million,” he says. Del Castillo says he applied for a loan and until now he’s still suffering because of the loans. He says all the materials that were not included in the program of work and the bill of materials were provided by him. Liza Soberano zeroes in for Hollywood spot in style
Liza Soberano continued doing the rounds in Tinseltown, this time stunning the crowd as she rocked a Mark Bumgarner custom Balintawak gown. The 25-year-old Soberano, who left the Philippines in a trail of controversial statements against local show business, was among the Filipinos who graced the Gold Gala honoring Asian creators recently at the Music Center in Los Angeles, California. Looking every inch the modern Filipina, Soberano donned the gown that featured sparkling studs with butterfly sleeves, a sheer outer layer, and a translucent midriff. She met in the same gathering Filipinos who excelled in their respective fields like Lea Salonga, Fil-American celebrities Bella Poarch (social media), Geena Rocero (modeling), and Patrick Starr (make-up). NU, UST try to boost twice-to-beat chances
Defending champion National University and University of Santo Tomas would rather downplay the angle of a hyped-up rivalry and just focus on what’s at stake when they cross paths once again in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan. Sharing the second spot with identical 9-3 win-loss records, both Final Four-bound squads have an opportunity to better their chances of claiming the last twice-to-beat advantage with a victory in their scheduled 11 a.m. battle. The Tigresses are on a four-game roll after five outings in the second round and are looking to take advantage of their momentum to complete an elimination head-to-head sweep of the Lady Bulldogs. UST was the last team to complete the Final Four cast after eliminating Far Eastern University from contention to join league-leading twice-to-beat De La Salle University and Adamson University in the next round. The Tigresses snapped NU’s 20-game winning streak that spanned three years in their first meeting in a thrilling come-from-behind fashion, 25-23, 27-25, 17-25, 22-25, 15-11, last 4 March. Head coach Kungfu Reyes knows that the Lady Bulldogs are out to exact revenge against them but he doesn’t want his players to get too emotional and lose focus. “We want to play volleyball and not play for the occasion. We can’t let the hype (of the game) get into our heads, otherwise, we’ll be overwhelmed,” Reyes said. “We must remain on target, on the dot, because NU surely will be.” Top Most Valuable Player contender Eya Laure, who dropped 28 points against FEU, Imee Hernandez, Regina Jurado and Milena Alessandrini will again be at the center of the Tigresses march to replicate their first round win over the Lady Bulldogs. But NU is far from the shaky team it once was. The Lady Bulldogs have also piled up four consecutive victories after their back-to-back losses at the hands of the Lady Spikers to end the first round and at the start of the second. NU has not dropped a set since then. Reigning MVP and last year’s Rookie of the Year Bella Belen acknowledges that the Lady Bulldogs are eager for payback but they need to keep their emotions in check. “We are really eager to get back at UST because they defeated us in the last round. But we need to be composed,” Belen, who had 21 points in a sweep of winless University of the East last Saturday, said. “We have to be relaxed. If we get overeager we risk committing errors.” Helping out Belen are Alyssa Solomon, Ces Robles, Vange Alinsug, setter Lams Lamina and libero Jen Nierva. Meanwhile, the sliding University of the Philippines and UE clash at 3 p.m. The Fighting Maroons are on a nine-game losing skid for a 1-11 card while the Lady Warriors try to barge into the win column after failing in their first 12 attempts. In men’s play, unbeaten NU (12-0) seeks to move closer to an outright Finals seat in a showdown against UST (10-2) at 9 a.m. while UE (4-8) looks to remain in contention for a semis seat when it clashes against UP (1-11) at 5 p.m. The post NU, UST try to boost twice-to-beat chances appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Games Sunday: (MOA Arena) 9:00 a.m. --- UST vs FEU (m) 11:00 a.m. --- UST vs FEU (w) 3:00 p.m. --- La Salle vs Ateneo (w) 5:00 p.m. --- La Salle vs Ateneo (m) Defending champion National University booked a Final Four seat after a cakewalk win, 25-5, 25-15, 25-13, over the hapless University of the East in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena. It took the Lady Bulldogs just 79 minutes to capture their fourth straight victory for a 9-3 win-loss record to climb to solo second spot in the standings. NU joined twice-to-beat league-leading De La Salle University (11-1) and Adamson University (9-4) in the next round leaving University of Santo Tomas (8-3) and Far Eastern University (6-6) scrambling for the last Final Four seat. Reigning Most Valuable Player and last year’s Rookie of the Year Bella Belen made a living on the service line, landing six of the Lady Bulldogs’ total 13 aces to finish with 21 points. Belen smashed 13 spikes and had two kill blocks while tallying six excellent receptions. Ten other NU volleybelles chipped in on offense as head coach Karl Dimaculangan had the luxury of fielding in all his available players. Alyssa Solomon had eight points while Vange Alinsug and Sheena Toring got six and five markers, respectively, for the Lady Bulldogs. NU opened its mauling with a 9-0 blitz in the opening frame, setting the pace for the clinical beating. The Lady Bulldogs outspiked the Lady Warriors, 34-17, and limited their errors to just 14. “We’re very happy we get to apply what we trained for, especially on service,” Belen said. “We minimized our errors and just stuck to our game plan.” The win also gave NU an added boost heading to its much-awaited rematch against UST, which snapped its 20-game winning streak in the first round, on Wednesday. UE remained winless after 12 starts. Van Bangayan led the Lady Warriors with seven points while Ja Lana had five. Meanwhile, the three-peat-seeking Bulldogs easily dismantled the Red Warriors, 25-16, 25-17, 25-20, to move within two wins from completing an elimination round for an outright Finals appearance. Buds Buddin and Nico Almendras led NU to its 12th win in as many games with 14 and 12 points, respectively, while Ken Malinis got 10 markers. Owa Retamar tallied 22 excellent sets for the Bulldogs. UE despite the loss remained in contention for a semifinals berth albeit already on the brink of elimination with a 4-8 slate. Giles Torres had eight points while Joshua Pozas got seven for the Red Warriors. The post Lady Bulldogs book semis seat appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Lea tops website’s list of famous Pinoy singers
Lea Salonga topped the list of “20 Famous Filipino Singers” collated by the website singersroom.com. recently. While the choice for the “Miss Saigon” and “Les Miserable” star was hard to contest, some of the entries in the list were subject to debate – mainly by netizens whose idols may not be on the list. Still, the website, obviously coming from the point of view of an outsider, got it right when it said Filipino music “has been celebrated for its emotional depth, catchy melodies, and relatable lyrics that speak to the human experience.” It also pointed out that the choices were based on popularity. A brilliant excuse for omitting such beloved singers like Basil Valdez, Zsa Zsa Padilla and Rico J. Puno. “In this era of globalization, the influence of Filipino music is continuing to spread and gain recognition, making it an exciting time for Filipino singers and music enthusiasts alike,” the website added. It, however, included Bella Poarch, the Fil-American singer and multimedia personality. If that was the yardstick, then maybe Vanessa Hudgens and Olivia Rodrigo should have been there, too? Anyway, finishing second to Salonga at No. 2 was “Asia’s Songbird” herself Regine Velasquez followed in order by Gary Valenciano, Jed Madela, Apl.de.ap, Sarah Geronimo, Arnel Pineda, Ice Seguerra, KZ Tandingan, Moira dela Torre, Kyla, Kuh Ledesma, Jonalyn Viray, Poarch, Freddie Aguilar, Rachelle Anne Go, Sharon Cuneta, Francis Magalona, Bamboo and Angeline Quinto. UST’s Hernandez is UAAP Player of the Week
UST’s Imee Hernandez imposed her will in the middle in a rock-solid performance to power her team against Ateneo de Manila University on Saturday, 16 April in the UAAP Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament at the PhilSports Arena. Hernandez punished the Blue Eagles with quick attacks and provided solid defense for the Golden Tigresses with her blocking. When the dust settled, Hernandez notched a career-best 24 points on 19 attacks, three blocks, and two service aces as UST stopped Ateneo, 25-22, 25-20, 27-29, 25-21. Scoring efficiently on a 19-of-31 attack clip, Hernandez helped lead the Golden Tigresses to their third straight win as they rose to an 8-3 win-loss card, tied with Adamson and defending champ NU at No. 2. Hernandez and company likewise strengthened their chances of finishing in the top two of the standings, which merits a twice-to-beat incentive in the Final Four. With her strong outing, Hernandez earned the citation as the Collegiate Press Corps UAAP Player of the Week presented by San Miguel Corporation and Philippine Sports Commission with MNL Kingpin, Tinapayan Festival, and Jockey as minor sponsors. Hernandez bested other candidates like teammate Eya Laure, La Salle’s Angel Canino, Ateneo’s Faith Nisperos, and reigning MVP Bella Belen of NU for the citation handed out by print and online scribes covering the beat from 12-16 April. "'Yung mindset ko talagang gawin lang 'yung role ko, kung ano 'yung dapat kong gawin sa loob ng court and syempre ipakita 'yung maturity na dapat mayroon kaming mga seniors," said Hernandez. "Hindi titigil, hindi kami masa-satisfy sa ganito lang. Kailangan malampasan namin palagi. Sabi ni coach [Kungfu Reyes] kailangan everyday nalalampasan mo 'yung ginawa mo today." This marks the second week in a row that a Tigress won the weekly citation, as Laure earned the honor for the period of 29 March to 2 April, before the UAAP took a break for the Holy Week. NU boosts semis bid
Games Wednesday: (Mall of Asia Arena) 10 a.m. — FEU vs Ateneo (men’s) 12 p.m. — FEU vs Ateneo (women’s) 2 p.m. — La Salle vs Adamson (women’s) 4 p.m. — La Salle vs Adamson (men’s) Defending champion National University narrowed the Final Four race after a convincing win over Far Eastern University, 25-21, 25-14, 25-23, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City. The Lady Bulldogs assured themselves of at least a playoff for a semis seat with their third straight win that put them in a three-way tie at the second spot together with idle University of Santo Tomas and Adamson University with an 8-3 win-loss record. Alyssa Solomon showed the way in NU’s win that gifted league-leading De La Salle University an automatic ticket to its 13th straight Final Four appearance while booting out Ateneo de Manila University (4-7) of contention. Solomon, the reigning Best Opposite Spiker, dropped 18 points, including 17 attacks. “I’m happy with the result and, at the same time, we still have a lot to improve on. We should never be tired of learning. We also need to be confident every game,” Solomon said as she and skipper Ces Robles faced the media after head coach Karl Dimaculangan declined to grant an interview for the third straight time. Season 84 Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year Bella Belen got 14 points and accounted for 13 of the Lady Bulldogs’ 48 attack points while freshman Vange Alinsug chipped in with 12 markers, 12 digs and two excellent receptions. The Lady Tamaraws were pushed to the brink of elimination in the semis race as they slid to a 5-6 card but not after giving the Lady Bulldogs a scare in the third set. ‘I’m happy with the result and, at the same time, we still have a lot to improve on. We should never be tired of learning. We also need to be confident every game.’ FEU took a 23-21 lead on a Jovelyn Fernandez hit followed by a Solomon attack error. Back-to-back errors by the Lady Tamaraws tied the set at 23 before Belen and Robles sealed the sweep with consecutive attacks. Fernandez and Chenie Tagaod had seven markers each to lead the Morayta-based squad. The Lady Tamaraws still have an outside chance of making it to the semis if they win their last three games in the eliminations and pray that one from UST, Adamson and NU won’t reach nine wins to force a playoff for the last Final Four seat. FEU will face Ateneo, who missed the semis for the first time in 14 years, on Wednesday. In men’s play, three-peat-seeking and unbeaten Bulldogs grabbed a Final Four twice-to-beat advantage after beating the Tamaraws, 28-26, 25-21, 26-28, 25-23, for their 11th straight win. Buds Buddin led four other NU players in double figures with 24 points with all but one coming from attacks and had 22 excellent receptions. Nico Almendras and Kennry Malinis got 17 and 13 markers, respectively, while Obed Mukaba and Gerard Diao finished with 12 each for the Bulldogs’ 29th straight win overall since 2019. “It was a great game. Both teams gave their best, it’s just that we were able to exploit our advantage. Hopefully, we’ll be able to sustain our momentum in our next game,” NU head coach Dante Alinsunurin said. The Bulldogs’ win drew the team to just three more wins to complete an elimination sweep for an outright Finals berth. A sweep by NU will force a step-ladder semifinals. Games Wednesday: (Mall of Asia Arena) 10 a.m. -- FEU vs Ateneo (men’s) 12:00 p.m. -- FEU vs Ateneo (women’s) 2 p.m. -- La Salle vs Adamson (women’s) 4 p.m. -- La Salle vs Adamson (men’s) Defending champion National University narrowed the Final Four race after a convincing win over Far Eastern University, 25-21, 25-14, 25-23, in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 85 women’s volleyball tournament on Sunday at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City. FEU took a 23-21 lead on a Jovelyn Fernandez hit followed by a Solomon attack error. "It was a great game. Both teams gave their best, it’s just that we were able to exploit our advantage. Hopefully, we’ll be able to sustain our momentum in our next game," NU head coach Dante Alinsunurin said. The Bulldogs’ win drew the team to just three more wins to complete an elimination sweep for an outright Finals berth. A sweep by NU will force a step-ladder semifinals.
