PBA: Ginebra beats Magnolia in Game 1 of Manila Clasico quarters

Manila Clasico Game 1 goes to Ginebra. The defending champion Gin Kings managed to hold off Magnolia Saturday in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals, taking an 85-79 win at the MOA Arena. Tied at 75 late in the fourth quarter, it was Ginebra that made the shots that count for an early 1-0 lead in the best-of-3 series. The usual suspects were productive for the Gin Kings, including 20 points from import Justin Brownlee and another 18 from Stanley Pringle, who made his playoff debut as a member of the barangay. Game 2 is set Tuesday at the Big Dome.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Ginebra still has to “outplay” Magnolia to win Manila Clasico

Brgy. Ginebra took a 1-0 lead in the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup quarterfinals Saturday. Holding on for a close 85-79 victory, the defending champion Gin Kings are one win away from a return trip to the semifinals to continue their quest for back-to-back titles. However, Ginebra feels like it didn’t necessarily give a winning performance in Game 1 against the Hotshots. Head coach Tim Cone certainly thinks so. “As much as we won, it feels like a loss because we weren’t able to play the game we wanted to play at all,” he said. “We got frustrated a lot throughout the game and our guys cannot afford to get frustrated. We got to keep our focus on each possession. We got distracted at times. But, again, credit their defense,” Cone added. In order not to absorb a third straight elimination at the hands of Magnolia, Cone says the Gin Kings need to play a whole lot better starting with Game 2 oon Tuesday. Ginebra certainly can’t afford playing the Hotshots’ slow game. “They had to make it kind of an ugly game. They kind of had to muddy it up and they did. They did muddy it up. Again, it was really great discipline at their part and as I said, it really feels like a loss more than a game,” Cone said. “I thought they outplayed us tonight. We ended up winning the game but they outplayed us. We can’t let them outplay us on Tuesday,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

PBA: Pringle delivers in first playoff game for Ginebra

Brgy. Ginebra’s first win in Manila Clasico quarters of the 2019 PBA Commissioner’s Cup meant that Stanley Pringle also got his first playoff win as a member of the barangay. Pringle, acquired by the defending champion Gin Kings in a blockbuster trade earlier this conference, was Ginebra’s top local against Magnolia Saturday. In 41 minutes, Stanley was good for 18 points to go along with four rebounds and a pair of assists. “It feels good,” Pringle said of his first playoff win for Ginebra. “The job’s not done so not really thinking much of it. Just on to the next game,” he added. Now a true member of Ginebra, Pringle finally got to experience what it feels like to be on the barangay’s good side in the playoffs. However, Stanley’s not getting carried away. “It was cool. First game, I’m still locked in and focused on correcting my mistakes, the couple of turnovers I had. I’m not really thinking about anything else. Just worry about Game 2,” he said. “Like I said, touch up on a couple of mistakes we did on defense, fix a couple of ratations. I can’t worry about any calls. I’m just focused on the game and Game 2,” Pringle added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

Tornadoes make it six in a row

Foton cruised to its sixth straight win, defeating Generika-Ayala, 25-16, 28-26, 25-15, behind the heroics of Dindin Santiago-Manabat on Saturday in the 2019 Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference at the Filoil Flying V Centre. Santiago-Manabat had 19 points, all but one from spikes, while her younger sister Jaja added 15 markers, including the match-clinching quick attack for the Tornadoes, who improved to 7-3 win-loss record. Mina Aganon had an all-around game of eight markers, 22 digs and 7 excellent receptions for Foton. “Of course, like I said, this second round is really a game of positioning,” said Foton coach Aaron Velez. “One thing that I like with my players today is they just kept on believing in themselves and then they were able to, although there was a little struggle, they just keep on getting our rhythm and we never lost our focus.” After a hard-fought second set, where Generika-Ayala reached the first set point, Foton looked more aggressive in the third set despite trailing, 4-7. The Tornadoes refused to yield as they turned the tables to their favor before taking a, 21-12, lead en route to the win. Velez, however, admitted that he wasn’t surprised to win the match in straight sets. “No one needs to be surprised, actually,” he said. “Every team in the league has the capacity to win.” Patty Orendain finished with 13 points for Generika-Ayala, which dropped to 5-4.   Meanwhile, Cignal added to Sta. Lucia’s misery after hammering an impressive 25-8, 25-16, 25-22 victory for a 4-5 mark. Opposite Mylene Paat and setter Alohi Robins-Hardy led the way for the HD Spikers with nine attacks to finish with 12 points.  Robins-Hardy chipped in 10 markers laced with four aces and eight excellent sets for the HD Spikers, who turned the match into a rout in the first set. Janine Marciano and May Luna combined for 17 points for the HD Spikers in the match that took an hour and 24 minutes to finish. Roselle Baliton, Joy Dacoron and MJ Philips each had six markers for Sta. Lucia, which slid to 1-9.  .....»»
