Family: UK teen who joined Islamic State has baby in Syria

LONDON, United Kingdom --- The family of a British teenager who ran away to join the Islamic State group and now wants to return to the U.K. said Sunday she has given birth to a baby boy. The family's lawyer said 19-year-old Shamima Begum and the baby are in good health. In a recent interview with The Times newspaper, Begum said she had previously lost two babies to illness and malnutrition. News about Begum and her desire to go back to Britain have ignited a debate in the U.K. about how to deal with citizens who joined IS and want to leave Syria now that the extremist group is on the verge of collapse. Fatherhood becomes Mike Tan

If there was one good thing about working long, unpredictable hours during tapings, Mike Tan said, it's that it unwittingly prepared him for all the sleepless nights that come with being a parent to a newborn baby. Mike and his nonshow biz wife welcomed their firstborn, a baby girl, last November. "I have no issues staying awake in the wee hours of the night, because I'm already used to it," he told the Inquirer at a recent press conference for GMA 7's new fantasy series, "Kara Mia." The Kapuso talent described himself as a "very hands-on father," who enjoys tending to his baby. "I feed her, change her diapers and put her to sleep," he said. "I try to do it as much as I could, ...Keep on reading: Fatherhood becomes Mike Tan.....»»

UAAP 81 Football: Four Tamaraws score as FEU drops UE, 4-1

Far Eastern University picked up a massive opening day win as they trounced University of the East, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at the FEU-FERN Football Field in Diliman, Quezon City. Coming off their worst campaign in years, finishing seventh in UAAP Season 80, FEU looked every bit like the program that once won back-to-back titles as they dominated a contender in UE. Early on however, it looked like the Red Warriors were primed to get on the board first after a foul inside the box from FEU resulted in a penalty attempt from for UE. Red Warriors striker Mar Diano flubbed the penalty attempt however, as his shot hit the cross bar and bounced out. Immediately on the other end, it was FEU who drew first blood, with rookie Jermi Darapan scoring in the 29th minute. Three minutes into the second half, former Baby Tamaraws star Chester Gio Pabualan announced his arrival into the men’s tournament with a header to give the Tamaraws a 2-0 advantage. Opening day was a good one for tournament rookies, as the Red Warriors managed to pull one back in the 51st minute courtesy of first year-wingback Champ Marin, who became the fourth rookie to score a goal in the first matchday. The Tamaraws regained momentum as they widened their advantage to 3-1, courtesy of a free kick conversion from Nicky Canonigo in the 60th minute. FEU continued to pull away in the 66th minute, with Alex Rayos blasting one from way outside the box to make it a three-goal advantage for the Tamaraws. "Winning the first game of the season is the most important," said head coach Bobae Park. "Our players, I know they're also a little bit nervous, but they just tried their best, and their spirit is together."  With the win, FEU joins UST at the top of the early leaderboard with a win and three points each. .....»»

FEU will have to wait longer for Flying RJ s liftoff in UAAP Srs.

RJ Abarrientos has played his last game for Far Eastern University-Diliman High School. Whatever happens, though, Abarrientos is certain he will keep wearing green and gold. This, even though, as it turns out, it is yet to be determined if he can seamlessly transition from being a Baby Tamaraw to becoming a Tamaraw. “Si RJ, Grade 11 pa lang siya, no, so kailangan niya munang tapusin yung high school,” head coach Allan Albano told reporters after they were booted out on Friday. Yes, apparently, Abarrientos may very well have to wait a year before being eligible to play for Morayta’s Seniors squad. As he himself put it, “Siguro nga po, baka mag-sit out muna ako.” He is currently completing Grade 11, but because he’s already 19-years old, he will no longer eligible to play next season in the UAAP Juniors where the age limit is 19. That means that, while the all-around guard is finishing up with high school, he will not be able to play for their varsity teams. Of course, there’s also an option for Abarrientos to take the Philippine Educational Placement (PEP) Test that grants students an opportunity to accelerate from a certain level to another. Still, he is well aware that is a long shot – and he may very well have to sit out for a while. Whatever happens, though, the nephew of Philippine basketball legend Johnny “Flying A” Abarrientos said that he believes patience is a virtue. “Sa akin naman, hindi ako nagmamadali. Kung anong ibibigay sa akin na opportunity, kung level up yun sa Seniors, ready naman akong anytime na ipasok ni coach Olsen [Racela],” he shared. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

UAAP Jrs: Suspension fuels Terrence Fortea s hot hands

The NU Bullpups are in the UAAP Juniors' Basketball Finals for the eighth straight time, thanks primarily to the scintillating shooting display of guard Terrence Fortea. Fortea made the game look like target practice, scoring a career-high 30 points, all coming in the first three quarters.  He was also efficient at it, hitting 9 of his 17 attempts, including 7 of 14 from beyond three-point distance in the Bullpups' 94-72 win over the Adamson Baby Falcons. "He really played well talaga. kumbaga day in day out naman talaga he really tries his best to play his best," said the second-year coach of the squad. "Ang maganda sa kanya yung attitude niya towards practice, attitude everyday, he always gives his best. So no doubt," he added. But for the 18-year-old, his lights-out performance would not have been possible if not for the confidence his teammates bring day in and day out. "Sa team namin... kasi yung tiwala ng teammates ko nandoon naman eh. So bale, wala akong kailangan isipin na baka mawala sila ng kumpyansa pag sumasablay ako. Nandun naman yung tiwala," shared the 5'11" sharpshooter. Fortea was in fact handed a one-game suspension for a disqualifying foul he committed against De La Salle-Zobel a few weeks back, and it had served as a springboard for him to become a more accurate shooter. "Meron din talaga kasi yung, dun sa nangyari. Suspension ako tas parang sobrang daming na-realize rin. 'Yung maturity na realize ko para sa akin," Fortea exclaimed. With NU targeting its first title for the first time since 2016, all eyes will be set on a very stacked NU squad, now enjoying the services of fellow national team mainstays Carl Tamayo and Gerry Abadiano, who were redshirted in the loss against Kai Sotto and the Ateneo Blue Eaglets last year. Fortea will be expected to lead the way, and shared his motivation for his teammates. "Gusto naming bumawi talaga. Kasi two straight loss na sa finals eh. Parang ngayon sobrang motivated talaga kami. Prepare lang kami lagi. Kung sino man makalaban sa finals bibigay lang namin yung lahat." __ Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary......»»

UAAP: Sotto too much for FEU as Ateneo sets up Finals date with NU

As expected, Kai Sotto and Ateneo de Manila High School were pushed to the limit by Far Eastern University-Diliman. Only, Sotto and the Blue Eaglets did nothing but push back as they got the better of the Baby Tamaraws for a 90-82 decision on Friday at the Filoil Flying V Centre. The runaway Season MVP remained a force in this one, posting a 22 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. “Na-(mild) sprain ako nung first halk so nung time na wala akong ginagawa, nag-isip akong mabuti paano ako mag-bounce back sa second half,” he told reporters post-game. None of Cedrick Ona, Chiolo Anonuevo, and Mario Barasi had an answer for him, especially in the second half where he dropped 19 points. Right there with him was rookie playmaker Ian Espinosa who had 19 points, four assists, and three rebounds as well as second-year swingman Joaqs Jaymalin who had 17 markers of his own. The defending champions were in complete command for majority of the matchup, but FEU-Diliman didn’t quit and pulled to just within seven, 80-87, with 42.6 ticks to go. “With only five guys coming back from our championship team, kitang-kita naman sa endgame na kailangan pa namin ng experience,” coach Reggie said. It was at that point, though, that Sotto and Geo Chiu made good on three of four free throws to seal the deal for their team. And so, just as top-seed Nazareth School of National University took care of business earlier, so did Ateneo. With that, the Blue Eaglets will clash with the Bullpups once more for all the glory beginning on Monday. For the Baby Tamaraws, RR Tolentino topped the scoring column with 19 points to go along with 14 rebounds while main man RJ Abarrientos also added 17 markers, eight boards, and five assists. PBA: Paul Lee has happiest birthday ever despite loss

Even though the Magnolia Hotshots fell to 0-3 after a James Yap game-winner, Paul Lee still thinks there will be something to look forward to on his birthday tomorrow, Valentine's Day. The Best Player of the Conference of the 2018 PBA Governors' Cup will be celebrating his 30th birthday  as a member of the Gilas Pilipinas pool in practice tomorrow morning. Lee said he will then have a simple dinner with his family along with a very special guest, the couple's new treasure, daughter Tokyo. Tokyo, who just turned four months old last Feb. 8, will be celebrating her daddy's special day for the first time, which has clearly made the spitfire guard all the more exciting Thursday. "['Y]un ang pinaka-maganda dun, 'yung magbi-birthday ako na may baby. So, wala ng mas okay pa doon. 'Yun na ang pinakamasarap na feeling, na birthday ko na mangyayari," Lee said after the Hotshots' 75-74 loss against red-hot Rain or Shine Wednesday evening. Now talking about the game, the UE alumnus thought that the game was over after he hit a difficult step-back jumper which gave his team the 74-72 lead with 6.1 left. So... ayun, we have a break after this game so we need to figure out kung ano talaga 'yung problema ng team, or kung ano 'yung dapat naming gawin. So we have time para ma-figure out," shared Lee.  As the whole league heads to a two-week break to give way for Gilas' most important stretch, he did note that his teammates are already in win-now mode and is confident that they could bounce back from their setbacks. "...[N]apag-usapan namin kanina sa dugout, kailangan 'yung sense of urgency andoon na talaga. Siguro alam naman ng lahat kung ano 'yung sitwasyon namin ngayon, so there's no point na magre-relax pa kami or what," Lee mentioned. __   Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary. .....»»

Newborn baby pulled from storm drain in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG --- Rescue workers in South Africa pulled a newborn baby from a storm drain in a four-hour operation that ended with whoops and cheers from onlookers. Rescue Care Paramedics, one of the groups that helped to extricate the infant girl in Durban, says it is unclear why the baby was "dumped" and that police are investigating. The group says emergency responders went to the scene on Monday after residents heard a baby crying from deep inside the concrete storm drain. It says the area was dug up and a chisel and hammer were used to break into the drain.
