Petron downs F2 Logistics to keep unbeaten streak

BIÑAN CITY --- Reigning champion Petron brushed off a sluggish start to beat archrival F2 Logistics, 22-25, 25-16, 25-16, 25-20, and remain unscathed after four outings in the Philippine Superliga All-Filipino Conference Saturday at the Alonte Sports Center here. Aiza Maizo-Pontillas led the Blaze Spikers’ charge with 19 points highlighted by 17 kills while Bernadeth Pons displayed her all-around game with 16 markers, 21 digs and five excellent receptions. Sisi Rondina added 11 markers including an incredible four-kill block performance for Petron. “Alam namin na importante 'yung game ngayon para makita namin kung nasaan na kami as a team. Naging maganda na 'yung execution namin noong huling tatlong set kaya happy kami,” said Blaze Spikers coach Shaq Delos Santos.   The Cargo Movers slid to 3-1 card despite the 12-point effort of Cha Cruz and libero Dawn Macandili’s incredible 31 digs and 10 excellent receptions. Meanwhile, Cignal hung on tight to survive gritty Generika-Ayala in thrilling five sets, 26-24, 17-25, 25-22, 20-25, 17-15, to regain its winning ways. Despite squandering a 2-1 set lead and trailing in the fifth set, the HD Spikers never wavered, especially skipper Rachel Anne Daquis, who erased the two match point advantages of the Lifesavers to tie the decider, 15-all. Then, Bang Pineda committed an attack error before AC Masangkay delivered the final blow that helped Cignal escape the cardiac game. The HD Spikers were emotional after improving their record to a 2-2 win-loss record as they bounced back from a frustrating setback to Foton last Wednesday, where head coach Edgar Barroga was slapped with a red card and sent to the penalty box. In the Collegiate Grand Slam, University of the Philippines (UP) and Far Eastern University (FEU) avoided an upset ax to pluck their second victory. The Lady Maroons suffered a second-set meltdown, but recovered just in time to pull off a 25-6, 21-25, 25-16, 25-22 victory over Colegio San Agustin (CSA)-Binan while the Lady Tamaraws brushed off a first-set scare to tally a 25-21, 25-16, 25-11 win over De La Salle University-Dasmarinas. Rookie Nicole Magsarile shone with 15 points built on 12 attacks and three aces while fourth year Justin Dorog dropped 14 hits for UP, which claimed its second win. Aie Gannaban and Marist Layug also chipped in 11 and 10 hits, respectively, while skipper Tits Carlos had nine points laced with 10 digs to underscore the Lady Maroons fluid, well-balanced offensive execution. After being limited to only six points in the first set, the Eagles drew strength from their home crowd as they erected a 20-13 lead in the second set. The Lady Maroons managed to slice it to within two, 20-22, but Dorog committed an attack error that gave the Eagles the set point, 24-20. Dorog tried to atone for that blunder with a successful hit before Lency Duarte scored a block to give the Eagles their first set win in the tournament. The Lady Maroons got their acts together in the third set and convincingly took the 2-1 set lead, but the Eagles continued to put up a gallant fight in the fourth set as they turned 17-21 cushion to a one-point lead. Fortunately for UP, Layug and Magsarile delivered the crucial blows to reach match point, 24-21, until Gannaban hit the game-winning quick attack......»»

The Cool Smashers star limped out of the court in the second set before heroically returning in the third to carry her team from a 19-23 deficit to a resounding sweep as Creamline improved to a 7-2 win-loss record, tied with BanKo at second spot behind Ateneo-Motolite (9-2). Valdez finished with game-high 17 points off 10 attacks, five aces and a couple of kill blocks laced with 11 digs for the Cool Smashers, who recovered from a five-set loss to the Lady Eagles two weeks ago. She played through pain until midway in the second set before subbing out.   With her team down, 10-15, in the third Valdez returned to action and immediately scored an attack to rally her team to an amazing fightback. Pau Soriano sparked Creamline’s run in the closing stretch of the third set, scoring on quick attack before Valdez pounded back-to-back hits to cut their deficit to 22-23. PVL: Nothing to worry about -- Valdez on injury scare

Creamline star Alyssa Valdez assured her teammates and fans that she’s doing fine despite playing through pain on her right ankle in the Cool Smashers’ straight sets win over Tacloban in the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Open Conference. “Siguro kailangan lang ng strengthening and rest. Tomorrow back to regular programming do strengthening. Nothing to worry about,” said Valdez, who led the Cool Smashers to a 25-16, 25-16, 26-24, win over the Fighting Warays Wednesday that hiked their record to 7-2 tied with idle BanKo at second spot. Valdez limped out of the court in the second set and had her right foot bandaged. The Cool Smasher felt some pain after a bad landing in the opening set.    She said that she has been nursing the nagging injury for quite some time. “Hindi ko rin alam sa paa ko pasulpot-sulpot (yung sakit). It’s been going on, matagal na rin. I think matagal na ito talaga,” admitted Valdez, who also had 11 digs. “As much as possible we do a lot of therapy. I mean ginagawan naman ng paraan during trainings but I guess today gusto lang niyang sumulpot.
