Lyon draws 0-0 with Barcelona in last 16 of Champions League

LYON, France (AP) — Lyon kept Barcelona's vaunted attack in check as the sides drew 0-0 in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday. Lionel Messi failed to add to his six goals so far in the competition, while Luis Suarez had the goal gaping but sliced a shot wide with 20 minutes left after latching on to Jordi Alba's pass from the left. When Messi picked out Sergio Busquets five minutes from the end, the midfielder's rasping shot from the edge of the penalty area drew a fine save from Anthony Lopes. "It's always good to go away from home and not concede," Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet said. "Lyon played well but their keeper was very good." Messi had the goal in his sights in the last minute with his second free kick of the night, but struck it into the wall and did the same with the rebound. Both goalkeepers did well in a contest free of any cynical or heavy fouling, with Barcelona's Marc-Andre ter Stegen making two fine saves inside the first 10 minutes from midfielder Houssem Aouar and forward Martin Terrier. Although Lyon spent much of the half chasing Barcelona's slick midfielders, Barca's approach play too often broke down around the penalty area. Suarez was the biggest culprit, wasting several promising moves with unusually hurried passes. Coach Ernesto Valverde's side won the Spanish league last season and leads it again. But Barcelona has not reached the Champions League final since winning the competition for the fifth time in 2015. In the night's other match, Liverpool and Bayern Munich also drew 0-0 in a match between five-time champions. The return legs are on March 13. Missing its best forward Nabil Fekir through suspension, Lyon started with Moussa Dembele as the central striker with Memphis Depay playing behind him. Terrier, cutting in from the left, was the most dangerous of Lyon's forwards. Lyon almost scored after five minutes when Aouar showed great technique to receive a pass on the edge of the area, neatly make space and shoot low to the right. Ter Stegen got down well to push his shot away and moments later made an even better save to tip Terrier's powerful shot one-handed onto the crossbar. As usual, Messi was elusive to mark and often found good positions. But he had a largely frustrating first half, failing to test Lopes with a free kick and two shots. When his trickery did work, notably with an excellent scooped pass over the defense in the 39th, the disappointing Dembele fluffed his shot. Terrier shot wide seconds before the break and Depay finally got involved when he curled a shot wide in the 52nd. A tactical switch from Lyon coach Bruno Genesio saw Depay moved wide left, with Terrier through the middle and Dembele on the right. It gave Lyon greater mobility but made it at risk from a swift Barcelona counterattack. On one of those, Suarez finally found some room to turn in the penalty area, but impressive defender Leo Dubois nipped in to block his shot. After Messi had an angled drive comfortably parried by Lopes near his front post, Valverde brought on Philippe Coutinho for Dembele. Barcelona's players stepped it up and finished the match with a greater sense of urgency as they hunted a valuable away goal. Lopes cut out a dangerous Alba cross, saved from Coutinho and narrowed the angle when Messi ran onto Suarez's pass. "We tried to push them away from the middle, as they are less of a threat from the wings," Dubois said. "The result is fine for us; we still have a chance to progress even if we know it will be tough. We have the ability to go far.".....»»

To take on Ronaldo, Atletico could unleash attacking trio

By Tales Azzoni, Associated Press MADRID (AP) — Atletico Madrid could unleash an attacking trio in an effort to finally outdo Cristiano Ronaldo in the Champions League. Atletico coach Diego Simeone will be able to call on Antoine Griezmann, Diego Costa and Alvaro Morata when his team hosts Juventus in the first leg of the last 16 on Wednesday, in what will be Ronaldo's first match in Madrid since leaving Real Madrid last year. Ronaldo faced Atletico four straight seasons in the Champions League while wearing Real Madrid's jersey, succeeding every time — in two finals (2014 and 2016), one quarterfinal (2015) and one semifinal (2017). He has scored 22 goals in 31 matches against Atletico in his career, including a hat trick in the first leg of the 2017 semifinals. Simeone, known for his great defensive squads, may look for his attack to try to neutralize Ronaldo this time. He used Griezmann, Costa and Morata together on Saturday in the team's 1-0 win at Rayo Vallecano in the Spanish league. Griezmann and Morata started the match, and Costa — coming off a long injury layoff — entered in the second half. It was the first time Simeone could use all three players together, as Morata signed from Chelsea in the recent transfer window and Costa hadn't played in nearly two months because of a foot injury that required surgery. "I like it," Simeone said after seeing them against Vallecano. He will have all three players available again for Wednesday's first leg against Juventus at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium, but he didn't say whether he will use them all from the start. "Obviously it takes time, it takes work, and an extraordinary physical condition from all three players," Simeone said. "Hopefully at some point we will give them more playing time together." Costa would likely be left off the team if Simeone doesn't go with the trio, considering he was sidelined for a long time. If Costa plays, he would take over the central striker position, with Morata moving to one of the sides, opposite Griezmann. "Costa allows Morata to play more freely, in a more comfortable position for him," Simeone said. "And Griezmann will remain an important player for us, taking advantage of every chance he has in front of him." Atletico was already playing with the three forwards when Morata set up Griezmann's winner on Saturday, although Morata was playing closer to the goal at the time, with Costa a bit further back. "Diego and Griezmann are two of the best forwards in the world, they have shown that already," said Morata, the former Real Madrid striker who joined Atletico after a disappointing stint with Chelsea. "It's easy to play with them, it's easy to adapt. I'm the last one to arrive, so I'm the one who has to adapt." Having all three available could be key for Atletico the rest of the season. In addition to the Champions League, Atletico remains in the title race for the Spanish league title, trailing leader Barcelona by seven points after 24 matches. This year's Champions League final will be held at Atletico's home stadium......»»

ONE Championship: Amid ‘Split’ Judges, Gina Iniong Relieved To Win With Conviction

Gina "Conviction" Iniong is finally back in contention for the ONE Women’s Atomweight World Championship.   She returned to the World Title picture following a split decision victory over the previously unbeaten Jihin "Shadow Cat" Radzuan at ONE: CLASH OF LEGENDS, which took place from the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday, 16 February.   The Benguet native dictated the tempo from the get-go. She continually landed her patented right hand over and over, and then mixed her striking attack with well-executed takedowns.   A late third-round surge from the Malaysian put Iniong at the edge of her seat when the judges’ scorecards were read.   Though confident she did enough to win, the Filipina was surprised to hear that a split decision was to be announced after three grueling rounds.   Fortunately for her, the result went in her favor.   “To be honest, I got nervous when they announced that it was a split decision,” said Iniong, who improved her mixed martial arts record to 8-4.   “I thought it should have been won by unanimous decision. I almost lost my breath when I heard that, but it’s okay. I think I did well. I was able to execute our game plan during the fight.”   After going 1-2 in her last three outings, a close loss is something “Conviction" could not really afford.   Iniong’s hopes of one day becoming the first Filipina World Champion in mixed martial arts is still very much alive, and she certainly needed that win to stay the course.   "It was a big relief,” she admitted.   “I struggled in my last bouts, so it feels really good to get back on track. Hopefully, this is a start of another run for me at the belt.”   "I was confident that I did enough to get my hands raised in the end. [Jihin] Radzuan is a tremendous warrior, and I wasn't expecting this to be an easy fight at all. Thankfully, our game plan worked.".....»»
