UST trots out Mark Nonoy as first-ever HS baller in PBA D-League

University of Sto. Tomas just fell short of the Final Four in the UAAP 81 Juniors Basketball Tournament. And so, one-and-done sensation Mark Nonoy has played his last game as a Tiger Cub. He finishes his first and only season in the Juniors with per game counts of 21.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, 6.0 assists, and 2.6 steals. For the recruit from La Carlota, Negros Occidental, however, this is far from the end as he will waste no time and move on up to the school’s Seniors squad. “Bukas, magte-training na ako sa Seniors. Walang pahi-pahinga,” he told reporters after their season-ending loss last Sunday. That means that last Monday, Nonoy was already getting at it with the likes of Growling Tiger veterans Marvin Lee and Renzo Subido and youngsters Sherwin Concepcion and Brent Paraiso. That transition, however fast it was, was a no-brainer for the UST coaching staff. “Number one, magfi-fit siya sa sistema at ngayon makaka-adjust na siya agad. Ngayong first years niya, gusto lang naming makitang nandun lang siya,” Bonnie Garcia, head coach for the Juniors and assistant coach for the Seniors said. He then continued, “Baka second, third year niya, it will be his time na talaga kasi Marvin Lee and Renzo Subido, graduate na.” Alongside getting to play with his future teammates in college, Nonoy is already preparing to wage war alongside the rest of the black and gold in the upcoming 2019 PBA D-League. Yes, the 18-year-old playmaker, UST’s point guard of the future, will be balling in the D-League. Once he enters the court there, he will become the first-ever high school student-athlete to have played in the eight-year-old league. For now, however, coach Bonnie said all UST wants Nonoy to do is to take in the next level of play. “Gusto naming maintindihan na niya yung higher level of basketball. Mag-oobserve siya dun para maintindihan niya,” he shared. He then continued, “Para pagdating na ng UAAP season, ready to play na talaga siya.” Whatever it is, Espana’s triple-double machine vows to be ready and raring to go at it with more experienced opponents. “Alam ko pong kaya ko naman doon. Sanay naman ako sa kalye na kung sino-sino ang kalaban,” he said through chuckles. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Nonoy-led UST goes streaking to end UAAP 81 Juniors

Tomas as they have scored their first back-to-back wins in the 81st Season of the UAAP Juniors Basketball Tournament. Nonoy stuffed the stat sheet as always in just 20 minutes as the Tiger Cubs had their way against De La Salle Zobel, 85-64, on Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Centre. The one-and-done sensation collected 16 points, seven assists, and seven rebounds, and two steals to lead his team to its first winning streak in the tournament. “We always wanted to end the season on a winning note especially sa mga seniors namin,” a beaming head coach Bonnie Garcia said. He was joined by Vince Dolendo and Jomar Amador in the 13-0 run that turned a two-point edge to a 27-12 advantage in their favor late in the first quarter. Both the double-digit lead and the momentum would remain with UST the rest of the way. Amador and Dolendo wound up with 15 and six points, respectively, as they completed their campaign with a 7-7 standing. The Tiger Cubs missed out on the Final Four, but coach Bonnie said he is nothing but satisfied with his maiden season as mentor. “Overall, we were short of the Final Four, but we had a very good season. too late lang nag-pick up ng steam yung team,” he said. For the Junior Archers, Luis Subido topped the scoring column with 14 points. They fail to make the playoffs for the third year in a row with a 4-10 record. Meanwhile, University of the East got the better of the University of the Philippines Integrated School once more, 80-76. Hefty big man Jesse Sullano posted a powerful 29-point, 17-rebound double-double while forwards Mike Flores and Leo Almacen merged for 22 markers, 12 boards, and 11 assists. Main man Shane Dichoso also contributed seven points, 15 rebounds, and six assists to make sure the 2-12 Junior Warriors did not finish the season at the bottom of the standings. PBA: Alex Compton s return effectively kills dismissal rumors

Amidst reports that he was dismissed as the Alaska Aces head coach, Alex Compton is back, effectively ending weeks-long speculation. Compton of course, is fresh off his fifth PBA Finals loss, which made the rumors more believable. The coach, who is now sporting a beard just arrived in Manila yesterday after spending time with family in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the United States. In that area of the continental United States, temperatures dipped to as low as -33° Celsius, which is a few degrees lower than the temperature in Antarctica due to a phenomenon as polar vortex.  Compton's arrival was just on time to lead his team to their Philippine Cup debut.  However, they ended the game on the wrong side of the story, losing 85-72 to the red-hot Rain or Shine Elasto Painters. "Last time I checked, I was just coaching the game. But we just lost and shot 29 percent. So I don’t know, I might get a phone call later. So yeah, we just have some work to do. I’ve been gone. That FIBA break’s gonna help us out," quipped the coach. Compton also added that if the news had been true, he would have been contacted first by team owner Wilfed S. Uytengsu and governor Dickie Bachmann.  "He’s awesome to work for. He will sit me down and tell me when it’s time. And then, when it is, if it is, whatever happens, then great. But I know I can trust that. Really, I mean, I read it and I was like, oh wow! But I thought, you know, I was gone for two weeks, and we had a tuneup game and I wasn’t there. And no coaches just leave in the pre-season. So it’s a natural rumor to start. It’s fine, but yeah," the mentor said. In his return, the Aces were given a rude awakening by coach Caloy Garcia's squad, which seemed to emphasized the four starters Alaska was missing. Jvee Casio, Vic Manuel, Simon Enciso, and Kevin Racal were injured, leaving Chris Banchero the only regular starter to face the music. It does not mean that the Aces used it as an excuse though, as Compton shared that the remainder of his roster were indeed talented PBA players. With a two week break after their third game, the approachable American hopes to use the league-mandated FIBA break to get their legs going once more and become that hard-nosed team people are used to. However, he does ask the Alaska fanbase to be patient, as being undermanned could lead to underwhelming results. "It’s probably gonna be a while, I can tell you that. A while doesn’t mean eight more months or something, that’s not what it means. It just means a while. Hopefully, it would be great," Compton said. "I’d be so happy if this conference we got everybody back. And that’s... Libre naman mangarap eh. So hopefully, we’ll get them back this conference. But it’s also not good when guys are really banged up to force them to play when they’re injured, then it gets worse, and then you really ultimately hurt yourself longer."   __   Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary......»»
