Mapua spreads its wings wider for third win in a row in NCAA 95

Mapua University has flown to even greater heights in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament after imposing its will on Jose Rizal University, 83-63, Friday at Filoil Flying V Centre. Laurenz Victoria continued with his scoring tear, pouring in 24 points in this one just as prized rookie Paolo Hernandez turned in his best outing yet with 20 markers, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. "Si Paolo, talagang alam na naming maaasahan namin," head coach Randy Alcantara said. Just like they have in their back-to-back wins before this game, the Cardinals rode the shoulders of those two just as the Heavy Bombers were rallying late. With their team clinging on to an eight-point edge with under three minutes remaining, Hernandez and Victoria connived for all but two points in a 14-2 finishing kick that eventually ended as a 20-point win - their biggest yet thus far in the tournament. Their biggest win is the latest in a three-game winning streak coming off a 0-5 start to the season. "Three straight wins, we're happy, we're satisfied. Tinrabaho ng players ko 'to," coach Randy said. The frontcourt of Christian Bunag and Warren Bonifacio also pulled their weight for Mapua with the former finishing with 10 points and eight rebounds and the latter ending with eight markers and 10 boards. For the Heavy Bombers, Agem Miranda topped the scoring column with 19 points while rookies Marwin Dionisio and JL Delos Santos also added 14 and 10 markers, respectively. Running out of gas in the endgame, however, they fell to 3-5 in the standings. Impact rookies allow Mapua to gun down EAC, go streaking in NCAA 95

All of a sudden, Mapua University has gone streaking in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament, adding Emilio Aguinaldo College to its just recently created list of victims via a 76-66 victory, Tuesday at Filoil Flying V Centre. The Cardinals actually found themselves in a close contest after two quarters and were only up by one, 35-34, early in the third. It was at that point, though, that they unleashed a terrifying 21-0 tear that blew the game wide open in their favor courtesy of a 56-34 lead late in the quarter. The Generals would not be able to threaten the rest of the way. With the double-digit decision, Mapua has now won its last two games. This, after starting the season with five losses in a row. "Hopefully, makatulong itong dalawang sunod na panalo," first lieutenant Yong Garcia said post-game. "Galing kami sa 0-5, down ang mga bata, pero ang focus lang namin is one game at a time." Just like in their breakthrough win just last Saturday, Laurenz Victoria was key in this one, dropping all but three of his 10 points in their massive surge in the third quarter. He was then flanked by prized rookies Cyril Gonzales and Paolo Hernandez with the former finishing with 13 points and three rebounds and the latter ending with 11 markers, three boards, two assists, and two steals. There's bad news for the Cardinals, however, as, with the decision no longer in question, Jasper Salenga incurred a disqualifying foul. That means he will have to serve a one-game suspension in their next outing opposite Jose Rizal University on Friday. "Disappointed si coach Randy sa last part ng game," coach Yong said, also explaining that head coach Randy Alcantara decided to go directly into the locker room to talk to his wards rather than go to the customary post-win interview. " Ginusto niyang bigyan ng chance yung iba para mabigyan ng confidence, pero 'di naging maganda ang resulta." For EAC, JC Luciano topped the scoring column with 12 points to go along with seven rebounds. At the wrong end of that terrifying tear in the third quarter, however, they absorbed their sixth loss in seven games. BOX SCORES MAPUA 76 - Gonzales 13, Hernandez 11, Victoria 10, Bonifacio 8, Serrano 8, Lugo 7, Garcia 5, Gamboa 4, Salenga 4, Bunag 2, Jabel 2, Nieles 2, Aguirre 0, Dela Cruz 0, Nocum 0. Mapua takes fight out of Arellano to finally take flight in NCAA 95

Mapua University has always given it all in the NCAA 95 Men's Basketball Tournament and, at long last, that was more than enough for a well-earned win, 73-64, at the expense of Arellano University, Saturday at Cuneta Astrodome. Laurenz Victoria turned in a career game with 29 points in efficient 8-of-13 shooting from the field and 12-of-15 shooting from the line, shooting the Cardinals to their very first win after six games in the season. "Masaya kasi, siyempre, saan pa ba ako pupunta. Naka-focus lang talaga kaming makuha yung unang panalo at tinrabaho ng lahat ng players," a beaming head coach Randy Alcantara said post-game. With the two teams going at it inside the last two minutes and their lead at a precarious two points, 66-64, it was also the veteran guard whose fadeaway jumper detonated a 7-0 blast to put the game away once and for all. Victoria had four points in that finishing kick while rookie Paolo Hernandez accounted for the other three and wound up with 14 markers and seven rebounds. Arvin Gamboa and Noah Lugo then chipped in nine and six points, respectively, as Mapua took full advantage of their aggressiveness throughout - going 26-for-37 from the charity stripe. "Sabi nga ni coach Randy, kahit natataloy tayo, 'di tayo makukuntento kaya kada practice, kada laro, talagang pinaghihirapan namin," Victoria said as they finally barged into the win column at 1-5. Now sporting the same slate are the Chiefs whose effort in this one was fronted by Archie Concepcion with 13 points. MPBL: Pacquiao cousin lifts Caloocan past Bacolod

The Caloocan Supremos - Victory Liner thrilled the home crowd in the Caloocan Sports Complex by putting the hurt on the Bacolod Masters Sardines, 89-74, in Thursday action at the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Lakan Season. The victory, a third straight at home, propels the Supremos to 4-5 in the standings while the Negrenses drop to 3-6. Rene Pacquiao's 14-point, 10 rebound night earned him player of the game honors. "Iniisip namin depensa, kase doon kami nananalo," said Pacquiao, who is a second cousin of MPBL founder and Senator Manny Pacquiao. The Supremos held Masters Sardines to just 39 percent from the field. Another key stat of the game was Caloocan outrebounding their foes, 50-33. Bacolod homegrown Paolo Javelona was on song right off the bat with four three-pointers in the first quarter alone. But Pacquiao was in form as well with all of his 14 markers in the first half as the home team led 43-34 at the half. Bacolod suffered a blow in the second quarter when starter Justin Alano picked up a fourth foul in the second quarter, limiting his minutes for the rest of the contest. Caloocan got four quick treys, two from Paul Sanga and two from JC Escalambre, to grab a 68-49 lead with a minute to go in the third period. At the start of the 4th Caloocan led 68-51. From then on Damian Lasco helped confirm the win with ten of his 14 points in the final ten minutes for Caloocan. Bacolod can console themselves with the fact that Paolo Javelona was in beast mode, scoring 30 points, but it just wasn't enough. The middle game featured Basilan Steel Jumbo Plastic smothering the Mindoro Tamaraws, 105-89, with an awesome display of firepower. The Southern Tagalog club has helpless in the face of the Steel's scoring juggernaut, with Shaquille Alanes hanging up 16 points, Irven Palencia contributing 14 and Jerald Bautista good for 12. Basilan showed their intent with a 30-point second quarter to take a 43-35 halftime lead. The Steel turned the screws in the third quarter with production by Palencia and Michole Solera to lead 71-57 at the end of the period. Bobby Balucanag's alley oop was the highlight of that run. Basilan didn't take their foot off the gas in the final quarter as they go to 6-3 while Mindoro suffer a 5th loss in eight. Gab Dagangon was adjudged best player with a dozen points and as many rebounds for the Steel. Mindanao can take solace in the fact that Rodel Vaygan had yet another stellar outing with 28 points and 10 caroms. In the afternoon game Makati Super Crunch dominated the Bicol Volcanoes LCC Malls in the fourth to win, 83-75. Makati delivered a 25-point second quarter to sieze a 36-28 halftime advantage, with Joseph Manlangit pouring in seven points in that period. Bicol showed fighting spirit with back-to-back triples from Alwyn Alday and Jerome Garcia to take a 67-65 lead halfway through the fourth. An Alex Nueva bucket made it 69-65. Then Makati stormed to a 15-0 run including seven straight points by Joshua Torralba to lead, 80-69, while Bicol struggled with poor shot selection in the face of a withering Makati press. With 35 seconds left Volcano Rhaffy Gusi was thrown out of the game with a bizarre hack on Vincent Importante's face while guarding him. It remains to be seen if he will be suspended for the disqualifying foul. Despite poor free throw shooting in the endgame Makati hung on for victory. Jeckster Apinan led Makati with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Chris Lalata's 14 points was tops for LCC Malls. Bicol slump to 5-5 after a third straight setback. Meanwhile Cholo Villanueva's Makati keep pace with the leaders of the North Division with a 6-1 record......»»

Ligue 1 2019-20: PSG set to dominate once again

By Samuel Petrequin, Associated Press PARIS (AP) — After winning its sixth French championship in seven years last season, Paris Saint-Germain is expected to continue its dominance in what at times can look like a one-team league. For the Qatari-backed PSG, the minimum requirement remains the same: win the French league. PSG's ultimate goal is also unchanged: win the Champions League after years of repeated failures. With its 500-million euro budget — more than five times that of last season runner-up Lille — huge sponsorship deals and top-class players, PSG simply has no rival in a league lacking strength in depth. On paper, Thomas Tuchel's team looks even stronger than last season, when it was crowned champion with five games to spare despite a late dip of form. Amid persistent rumors that Neymar will leave the club and return to Barcelona, PSG remains a formidable attacking force with the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani and Angel Di Maria. It also strengthened its backline this summer with the addition of Dortmund defender and France Under-21 international Abdou Diallo, while recruits Idrissa Gueye, Ander Herrera and Pablo Sarabia will provide midfield stability and experience. Sarabia, Herrera and Diallo were included in Tuchel's starting XI last weekend as PSG sealed a seventh consecutive Trophee des Champions — the French equivalent of the Charity Shield — with a 2-1 win over Rennes. PSG took pride in the win, insisting on the importance of the trophy, the 40th since the club's inception back in 1970. But in reality, the only title that really matters in the French capital is the Champions League. Success in Europe's top competition has so far proved elusive for PSG, which has never been beyond the quarterfinals since Qatari backers QSI started funding the club with huge investment eight years ago. In the past three seasons PSG has gone out in the Round of 16, twice wasting strong first-leg leads. The last time it was against Manchester United in March, when PSG became the first team to be eliminated from the competition after winning the away leg 2-0. "We need to carry on in the league, we need to extend our domination," Mbappe said. "We lost two national Cups (last season), we will try to recover them. And there is the Champions League. We have come to a halt in recent years, it's up to us to find a solution and reach a new milestone." More than the offseason recruits, Leonardo's return as sporting director could be the decisive ingredient that was missing in PSG's quest for European glory. Leonardo, who became PSG's sporting director for the first time in July 2011 and held his role until May 2013, has been given full powers by club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi. At a club where star individuals often appear more important than the team itself, Leonardo's return will mark a change of style in the players' management. A disciplinarian, Leonardo has warned Neymar that he would not let him go unless a juicy offer arrived and has reportedly criticized the Brazil star in front of his teammates after he reported late for PSG's pre-season training. "I don't have the key that is going to open the door to the Champions League," Leonardo said in an interview with Le Parisien newspaper. "Who has it? Not me. I just want to be clear about our goal: the club is THE great institution at the heart of the entire project." PSG starts the defense of its title on Sunday at the Parc des Princes against Nimes. Lille hosts Nantes, Marseille plays Reims at home and Lyon travels to Monaco on Friday night in the season's opening game. NO MONEY, BIG GOALS After a calamitous season, Marseille's main goal is to return to the Champions League under new coach Andre Villas-Boas. Three years after American billionaire Frank McCourt pledged to revive the 1993 Champions League winners, Marseille failed in its bid to qualify for Europe's top competition and did not even get a spot in the Europa League. Villas-Boas subsequently replaced Rudi Garcia and, despite very limited funds to spend on new players, has promised to deliver quickly in his bid to restore Marseille's past luster. "I don't want to lose time with excuses," he said. "I'm hoping for a podium finish." Villas-Boas has lured 29-year-old forward Dario Benedetto from Boca Juniors and hopes he will be able to keep Valere Germain, Florian Thauvin, Dimitri Payet and Luis Gustavo at the southern club. "We don't have money, it's a shame but it's a reality," Villas-Boas said. "We have some problems related to Financial Fair Play regulations. Now I'm waiting anxiously for the end of the English transfer market because that could change everything for the other teams." STARS' EXILE Nicolas Pepe and Nabil Fekir have become the latest big names to depart the French league as the talent exodus to foreign clubs continues. After scoring 22 league goals for Lille, Pepe left for Arsenal while World Cup winner Nabil Fekir joined Real Betis from Lyon. Lyon's new coaching setup of sporting director Juninho and coach Sylvinho have yet to find a replacement for Fekir, who left in the wake of other top players including Tanguy Ndombele and Ferland Mendy......»»
