Delightful discovery: Wilbert Rossas a sensitive singer-songwriter
If you need (or want) to balance off JK Labajo’s roaring, moaning, shrieking, cussing singing in his latest blockbuster single “Ere”, go for Wilbert Ross’ EP album Lampara, recently released by Viva Music on major music platforms. An actor just like Labajo, Ross emotes pain, loss and acceptance of one’s dire straits with restrained anger and without cursing. Ross wrote four of the six songs in the album — none of which, by the way, is titled Lampara. The album’s title is really an announcement of Ross’ intention for his music and lyrics to be a guiding light for the multitude, so to speak. The album’s lead song is “Handa Ako,” which he performs serenely with indie singer Mika Salamanca. “Byahe Ng Buhay”, meanwhile, takes listeners on a lyrical journey through life’s ups and downs. “Dramatic Actor” combines melodious vocals with a touch of drama. “Benteng Ukit” could have been rendered in a frenetic, howling style, but, sorry, that’s not Ross’ style of singing. The song is about self-inflicted wounds, and Ross wrote it during a bout with clinical depression at the height of the pandemic. The two other cuts in the album are “Nakangiti” and “Andito Lang Ako.” It was as a contestant at ABS-CBN’s singing contests Tawag ng Tanghalan of It’s Showtime and Pinoy Boyband Superstar that Ross took his first steps into showbiz. He was in his teens, fresh from Davao, and still using the surname “Rosalyn,” which seems to be the surname of his stepfather. Ups and downs At the recent media launch for Lampara, Ross shared that his Chinese biological dad left the family during Ross’ childhood. His mom is Indonesian. His biological dad passed on two years ago, but Ross got to meet him as a grown-up once or twice. The tall, soft-spoken, very articulate (in Tagalog) Wilbert began to use “Ross” as a showbiz surname when he was recruited to join the second batch of the singing and dancing boy group Hashtags for It’s Showtime. Ross said he has been writing songs for years now and recording them as a soundtrack for some of his acting assignments, such as the Puregold supermarket chain’s web series Ang Lalake sa Likod ng Profile which ended last July. He has no love life at this point, he said, which seems to be a requirement in Pinoy showbiz to sustain interest in an actor’s career. And the stars have to write about the ups and downs of their romances on their social media accounts. Labajo’s shrieking songs of pain would have sounded senseless if he and ex-girlfriend beauty queen Maureen Wroblewitz did not publicly hint about the agonies wrought by their soured relationship on their social media accounts. Ross the actor also wants to be known as a singer-songwriter. He has a marked supporting role in Viva Films’ Nokturno, topbilled by Nadine Lustre. Viva submitted the movie for this year’s Metro Manila Film Festival but it failed to make the cut. There’s another singer-songwriter who roars and howls about her angst: Cool Cat Ash, whose real name is Ashley Aunor. She’s the daughter of Lala Aunor, a member of the “Apat na Sikat” group of teen idols in the ‘70s. Perfect timing It’s perfect timing that the QCinema International Film Festival is being held in November. The festival screens a good number of foreign films that were released to critical acclaim sometime this year or last year. The next big showbiz event that comes after it is the Metro Manila Film Festival, during which only Filipino movies are shown all over the country. The MMFF usually presents only eight films, but this year there are 10 official entries. Those who love foreign films can have their fill of world cinema (60 films this year!) before the MMFF fills the theaters with all-Filipino fare for 10 days during the holiday season. The QCinema International Film Festival, now on its 11th year, runs 17-29 November. The opening film is the Golden Lion winner in this year’s Venice Film Festival, Poor Things. Keeping it together
It’s no longer unusual, nowadays, for a family to have one or both parents working in another country, or for grown children to relocate abroad for work or start their own family. Single parenting is also quite common, right along there with blended families and LGBTQ unions with kids. Yet even when families are together in one place — one home, compound, neighborhood or city — it takes a lot to stay “together,” literally and figuratively. Perhaps sensing the threats to what is recognized as society’s basic foundation, our government in 1992 decided to declare the last week of September as Family Week, as mandated by Proclamation 60 signed by then President Fidel V. Ramos. Ramos wanted the week to emphasize the importance of the family as “the foundation of the nation” and “as a basic autonomous social institution,” as well as recognize “the sanctity of family life,” as stated in the Constitution of the Philippines. The world may transform in many ways, but the need for family will never change. “No matter how much life changes and the concept of family evolves, it may continue to benefit human health and wellness by offering a sense of belonging and support,” it aptly states in an article on Better Help, which also enumerates the factors affecting family life as “advancements in technology, changing cultural norms, new priorities and advanced forms of communication fueled by the internet.” The sense of belonging one gains from being part of a family — whether it is in a traditional setup, adoptive or “chosen,” a new kind of family defined in these modern times — has a profound impact on one’s well-being. With government providing the impetus for today’s families to connect or reconnect during the annual Family Week, it is up to each one of us to take steps to keep ours together in these fast-paced, nomadic, dysfunctional times. In the local setting, we already see so many signs of the changing dynamics among families. We could wade through studies to figure out all the issues affecting our core foundation, but we believe one may truly gain more understanding by examining our own experiences. Here, we share the views of people in our sphere, in answer to our query: What do you consider as the biggest challenge for your family in these trying times? Gigie Arcilla, Editor-in-chief Dealing with young adult children presents the challenge of establishing boundaries as they seek independence and transition into adulthood. Striking a balance between support and autonomy, as well as providing guidance while allowing room for growth, can be difficult, especially for a single parent. Even if someone has health insurance, no one can deny how debilitating and expensive getting sick is. Without health, quality of life is decreased. You also cannot work (no work, no pay for freelancers such as myself) if you are sick. Gratefully, none of us in the family are currently seriously ill. It’s just that given that these trying times are also marked by corruption, medical gaslighting, new diseases and viruses and climate change, health problems have become even more threatening. My sister is busy with work, and so is my father. My mom is left alone at home with my cats. But, she goes to the gym to occupy herself and to see her friends. Even on rare occasions that everyone is together, dining out, for example, people look at their phones every few seconds. London Fashion Week throws spotlight on young designers
After New York, the fashion world descends on London from Friday, showcasing big names such as Burberry but also the work of young designers who could become household names of the future. Last year's event, billed as a comeback after disruption due to the Covid pandemic, was overshadowed by the death of Queen Elizabeth II and 10 days of national mourning. This year, more than 80 designers are set to present their spring/summer 2024 collections, with around 50 catwalk shows and other presentations. "It's going to be five really exciting days full of creativity," said Caroline Rush, chief executive of organizers the British Fashion Council (BFC). Fashion bible Vogue rolled out the red carpet on Thursday night for a gala launch event. But in the world of fashion, London is enduring a post-Covid slump, with inflation -- the highest in the G7 at 6.8 percent in July -- and Brexit combining to create a depressed economic backdrop. That has left the British capital trailing Paris, Milan, and New York in the fashion week stakes. In a sign of its loss of influence, even British former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham has crossed the Channel to present her designs in Paris since last year. Fresh UK funding On Wednesday, the UK government announced £2 million ($2.5 million) to support young designers, which will go to the BFC's existing NewGen program. The scheme, which over the last 30 years has supported the best young fashion designers, aims to launch the high-end global brands of tomorrow. The UK government funding will go towards the staging of five fashion weeks over two years, said the BFC. Previous recipients include the legendary Alexander McQueen, who died in 2010. On Saturday, the Design Museum in London is presenting an exhibition celebrating young NewGen talents, and the energy they have brought to the industry. "REBEL: 30 Years of London Fashion" showcases about 100 designs, some of which have gone down in pop culture history. This year, about 20 designers are benefiting from the NewGen program. Most are recent graduates, but who have already managed to dress some of the biggest stars. Outfits by Ukrainian designer Masha Popova have been worn by singer Dua Lipa. Di Petsa has dressed actress Zendaya. Among the more established names are 16Arlington, JW Anderson, Molly Goddard, Richard Quinn, Roksanda, and Simone Rocha. But Burberry, the London fashion house founded in 1856, remains the most eagerly awaited show. It takes place on Monday afternoon and will be only the second collection for British creative director Daniel Lee, following on from his February show. The ex-Bottega Veneta designer replaced Riccardo Tisci a year ago. Sales have soared in China for the brand with the distinctive check print. On the final day, Tuesday, Ukrainian designers will present their collections, with London once again hosting Ukrainian Fashion Week due to Russia's invasion. The BFC is also trying to make London an increasingly inclusive venue for catwalk shows. It has launched a survey aimed at all those working in the sector, with questions on their gender, sexual orientation, religion, and social background. "The audit is long overdue and marks the first step towards the vital measurement of the UK fashion industry's collective progress towards the goal of fair representation," the BFC said. The results will be announced later this year. Another must-see fashion event in London is the exhibition "Gabrielle Chanel. Fashion Manifesto", which opens on Saturday at the V&A museum. It retraces the 60-year career of "Coco" Chanel, featuring some of her greatest creations that revolutionized women's wardrobes. Barbie Forteza, David Licauco light up ‘Maging Sino Ka Man’
GMA’s hit stars Barbie Forteza and David Licauco of Maria Clara at Ibarra fame will bring back their sizzling chemistry to the television in Maging Sino Ka Man, the series adaptation of the ‘90s blockbuster hit of the same title and which catapulted Sharon Cuneta and Robin Padilla to new heights in their career back in the day. The highly anticipated romantic-action series will premiere 11 September and will run from Mondays to Fridays at 8 p.m. on GMA Telebabad and at 9:40 p.m. on GTV. It is directed by Enzo Williams (Ang Probinsyano). The Kapuso Primetime Princess and Pambansang Ginoo will play Monique and Carding, two very different people who fall in love with each other. It’s a rich girl-poor boy love story jampacked with action thrills and romance. The series also features Juancho Triviño as Gilbert Arnaiz, Faith Da Silva as Cleo Ramirez, Mikoy Morales (2023 Cinemalaya Best Actor) as Gordon a.k.a. Libag and Rain Matienzo as Tetay. Also part of the roster of its exciting cast are E.R. Ejercito as Boss Frank, Jeric Raval as Alex, Jean Saburit as Shonda, Juan Rodrigo as Miguel, Antonio Aquitania as Jonas, Jean Garcia as Belinda Salazar, Al Tantay as Osmundo and Tonton Gutierrez as George. At the most recent grand media conference, Williams described his experience directing the series as “not that hard.” “It’s not that challenging kasi ang galing nilang dalawa, to be honest. Working with Barbie, working with David — andiyan na ang chemistry nila eh, parang kaunting guidance na lang. So it’s not that hard,” he said. The director also expressed admiration for Forteza. “Barbie, I think she’s one of the best actresses I worked with.” This will definitely further amp the excitement among Forteza’s cult following as she will also play a male character in Maging Sino Ka Man. In the story, she also plays a dude named Dino as her disguise. For this, the actress studied Hilary Swank in Boys Don’t Cry, where Swank won an Oscar for her sensitive and complex role as a transman. This shows how serious Forteza is in her work for the series. Meanwhile, Licauco at the presscon admitted some challenges in his role as Carding, specifically the way the character talks as exemplified by Padilla in the hit movie: crass, crude and a thug. “As you know from the movie, mabilis magsalita si Carding. Matigas. As you can hear now, medyo mabagal talaga ako magsalita. I think iyon ang pinaka-challenging for me. But, of course, with the help of my director, I think…hopefully, nabigyan ko naman ng justice iyong character,” he replied to the question posted by a media member. Forteza also revealed that the series was created precisely for her and Licauco. “Personally, umeere pa lang Maria Clara at Ibarra, kumbaga napansin kami ng mga boss,” she said. “And they were already thinking of a follow-up project na para sa amin bilang artista. Sobrang fulfilling iyon, syempre. And kami (she and Licauco) naman po, in return, gagawin naman po ang best namin para mapaganda rin ang seryeng ito.” The creative team behind this 2023 remake of Maging Sino Ka Man is composed of creative director Aloy Adlawan; senior writers Benjamin Benson Logronio and John Kenneth de Leon; head writer Mark Duane Angos; brainstormer Louize Andrei Al-Shehri. Maging Sino Ka Man is made possible under the supervision of GMA senior vice president for Entertainment Group Lilybeth G. Rasonable; vice president for Drama Cheryl Ching-Sy; assistant vice president for Drama Helen Rose S. Sese; senior program manager Camille D. Hermoso; and executive producer Darling Pulido-Torres. Gello Marquez drops self-titled debut album
Idol Philippines season 1 alumnus Gello Marquez is ready to serenade music listeners with his newly released debut album under Star Music. “Dati nangangarap lang ako na magkaroon ako ng sariling kanta, ngayon album pa yung ibinigay. Sobrang overwhelming para sa akin na nangyayari ang lahat ng ito,” Gello said during his album launch held 7 September. The self-titled album has seven Filipino tracks including “Hanap Kong Baby,” “Kumot At Unan,” “Duda-duda,” “Kaibigan,” “Teddy Bear,” “Torpe,” and his first single “Penpen” released last month. The easy listening tracks were chosen based on his affinity for old songs. “It’s a modernized version of old songs kasi sobrang love ko ‘yung mga lumang kanta,” said Gello on his album. The young actor-singer, previously seen in He’s Into Her and Love Bites, compares love to a game of hiding feelings and trying to find it in the song “Penpen.” Inspired by the Filipino game “Penpen de Sarapen,” “Penpen” was composed by Allan G. Alveyra Jr. and Karl James Fabregas. Gello also previously released the music video for “Penpen,” which features a love triangle between him, BGYO member Akira Morishita and former Pinoy Big Brother Otso housemate Ashley del Mundo. Students to PBBM: Focus on inflation, education, public transport
Mau Manuel, a Gen-Z college student, asked what he wanted to hear from the second State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. today, said the government should focus on inflation, which is hurting a lot of Filipinos. “Siguro, iyong i-prioritize talaga 'yung inflation ng prices, kasi 'yun talaga ang currently natin na nararamdaman,” the 21-year-old college student told the Daily Tribune. In June, inflation was at 6.7 percent, a decrease from May's 7.4 percent. Manuel added that it is better for Marcos Jr. to prioritize first the country’s issues rather than his foreign trips. “I think mag focus na lamang siya sa bansa,” he said. “Kasi laging pangako siya ng pangako na may purpose 'yung travel yet wala naman akong naririnig na bumabalik (He always makes promises about the purpose of his travel but we don't seem to be gaining anything from it.)” Marcos Jr. had a total of 11 foreign trips since he started his six-year term last 30 June 2022, and is scheduled to go to Malaysia on 25 July. Education problems Meanwhile, some student-leaders urged the administration to address the root cause of problems in the education sector. “Bilang isang mag-aaral, nakakadismaya na ang edukasyon ay nagiging pribelehiyo na" (As a student, I am dismayed that education has become a privilege), said Marie Nerona, a 20-year-old college student, adding that the inaccessibility to free and quality education compromises the future of marginalized children in the country. “Karapatan natin ito, ngunit ang kakulangan sa pagtalakay ng isyu sa pagdaan ng panahon ay nagiging hadlang upang magkaroon o makamit ang kalidad na edukasyon para sa lahat” (We have a right to education, but the lack of discussion on the issue prevents us from achieving quality education for all), she stressed. With myriad problems bedeviling the educational system like the controversy over ROTC (in 2022, Marcos Jr. included the return of the mandatory ROTC in his legislative agenda), lack of resources in public schools and tuition increases, the Nerona said she is looking forward to how the President will address education in his speech. Transport challenges A student-commuter also voiced out his concerns over the country's transport system, an urgent problem that he said the President should address on his second year in office. Ashley Cruz, a college student who commutes going to school, cited the two main problems in the country’s transport system -- the phaseout of traditional jeepneys and the daily traffic. “Hindi naman urgent ang pagbabago ng jeep dahil marami pa rin namang sumasakay sa nakagisnang jeep” (The jeepney mordernization program is not urgent since many still ride the traditional jeepneys), the 21-year-old college student told the Daily Tribune. Last March, transport sector groups held a week-long strike against the move to phase out traditional jeepneys. Cruz also proposed that public utility vehicles, often blamed for traffic in major roads, should be given their own dedicated lane. In order for these problems to be solved, the government should conduct surveys among Filipino commuters and not only base their decisions on government agencies’ suggestions, said Cruz. “Dapat pakinggan nila ang kanilang pinag seserbisyuhan" (They should listen to the public they serve), she added. The Dingdong Dantes-topbilled new drama-thriller series Royal Blood must be GMA 7’s match-up with ABS-CBN’s long-airing Dirty Linen, bannered by Janine Gutierrez and the network’s seasoned stars John Arcilla, Janice de Belen, Joel Torre, Zanjoe Marudo, Tessie Tomas and Angel Aquino. Just like Dirty Linen, Royal Blood is about a wealthy and largely contemptuous but glamorous family — except for Napoy (Dantes), a widower and illegitimate son of the Royales family patriarch, Gustavo (Tirso Cruz III) who insists on having Napoy and his very young daughter Lizzie (child actress Sienna Stevens, a Filipina-New Zealander) stay with the family and live with his siblings who are all younger than he is. (Sidebar: Ramos is the flatmate for a year now of new Miss Universe Philippines Michelle Dee, who has announced that she is bisexual.) Kristoff’s wife is Diana (Megan Young, Mikael’s real-life wife), who was once Napoy’s girlfriend-great love. They have a son, Archie (Aidan Veneracion), who constantly seeks his father’s approval. Andrew (Dion Ignacio) is the ambitious and business-savvy husband of Margaret. Andrew has a rebellious son, Louie (James Graham) with his first wife. Royal Blood premieres on 19 June as a replacement for the romance series Hearts on Ice, topbilled by Xian Lim and Ashley Ortega. Royal Blood is helmed by Dominic Zapata, who also directed Hearts on Ice. The new series airs weeknights at 8:50 p.m. on GMA 7 and at 11:30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday and at 11 p.m. every Friday on GTV. Global Pinoys can also catch the program via GMA Pinoy TV. ‘Dirty Linen’ fancon in US And what is Dirty Linen up to these days? It’s prepping for a fan convention (fancon) in Sacramento, California on 24 June. The venue is the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. The first-ever Kapamilya convention will feature performances by Dirty Linen cast members Zanjoe Marudo, Francine Diaz, Seth Fedelin, Janine Gutierrez and John Arcilla. The fancon will feature a variety of games and activities for guests to participate in immersive exhibits where guests can experience the world of Dirty Linen, an exclusive sneak peek of new episodes and so much more. Tickets are available at Ticketmaster, or fans may call the box office at 916-808-5181 Mondays–Wednesdays from 12 noon to 5 p.m. The event is presented by World Remit and MX3. ‘Love at First read’ Now also airing on GMA 7 is the network’s second collaboration project with Wattpad Webtoon: LUV IS: Love at First Read. The series is bannered by one of the most sought-after Sparkle loveteams today, Mavy Legaspi and Kyline Alcantara, who play the lead roles of Kudos and Angelica/Abby. [caption id="attachment_145498" align="aligncenter" width="525"] PHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF gma-7 | MAVY Legaspi and Kyline Alcantara in ‘Luv Is: Love At First Read.’[/caption] Love at First Read is based on the hit Wattpad webnovel with the same title, which has amassed 23.3 million reads. Written by “Chixnita” (a pseudonym), it follows the story of Kudos, a secret romantic searching for the perfect girl. He finds a diary and believes that its owner, Abby, is the one for him. However, he also meets Angelica, a jaded girl who distrusts men and has no interest in love. They clash at first but as they get to know one another, their feelings begin to grow. Kudos is soon torn between Angelica and Abby — not knowing that they are actually one and the same person. Completing the cast of the adaptation are Josh Ford as Train; Pam Prinster as Hazel; Bruce Roeland as Risk; Larkin Castor as Shield; Therese Malvar as Abigail; Mariel Pamintuan as Sandy; and Gabby and Kiel Gueco as the mysterious Psalm and Philemon, who are Kudos’ cousins. Also starring are engaging thespians Maricar de Mesa as Yumi, Abby’s mom; Jestoni Alarcon as Hector, Kudos’ dad; and Jackie Lou Blanco as Truly, Kudos’ mom. LUV IS: Love at First Read is directed by Mark Sicat dela Cruz with Carlo Cannu as associate director. It airs Mondays to Fridays at 5:40 p.m. on GMA-7. With Maria Regina M. Amigo as head writer, the writing pool is composed of Liberty L. Trinidad, Benjamin Benson A. Logronio and Loi Argel R. Nova. Happily, there is no mayhem or murder in Love at First Read.
