From humble origins in GenSan, Manny Pacquiao s MPBL is now a nation-wide league

With the second season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League kicking things off, Tuesday evening, its steady rise to popularity continues Following a successful inaugural season with ten teams, the playing field has expanded exponentially in the second season, now with 26 teams vying for the title of MPBL National Champion, as well as a very, very valuable piece of hardware. (READ ALSO: MPBL: National Champions to get trophy worth ten million pesos) And as the semi-professional league continues to grow, it’s amazing to think that it all started with a ‘pa-liga’ in General Santos City. The brainchild of eight-division boxing world champion-turned Philippine Senator and avid basketball enthusiast Manny Pacquiao, the MPBL wasn’t always a nation-wide league. “Itong MPBL kasi, the original name is Manny Pacquiao Basketball League, and we piloted it sa GenSan,” Pacquiao explained during the opening day of the 2018-2019 MPBL Anta Datu Cup, Tuesday at the Araneta Coliseum. “Nag-pilot kami ng ten seasons, parang pa-liga ko lang doon tapos open siya and maraming sumali. Nagkaroon kami ng 18 teams, hanggang ten seasons yun, ang premyo namin ay 1 million.” After seeing that the league had potential, Senator Manny decided to take it to another level. “Maganda naman yung resulta, tapos pinag-aralan ko ng mabuti kung ano yung mga dapat gawin, yung titignan natin, and then nung na-complete ko yung ten seasons, in-apply ko sa national.” “[Pwede na ‘to] sa national, i-apply ko, ila-live ko sa TV.” Pacquiao added. After two years of brainstorming and preparation, the MPBL as we know it now was born. Pacquiao added that he decided to replace “Manny Pacquiao” with “Maharlika Pilipinas” so as not to stir anything up, given his political status. From a simple league in General Santos to a nation-wide league that features 26 teams from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, all bannered by former professionals, collegiate hoop stars, and homegrown talents, the MPBL is definitely living up to what Pacquiao envisioned it to be: a platform for even more FIlipinos to showcase their basketball skills at a high level. "Nagsimula lahat sa isang pangarap, na mabigyan ng pagkakataon ang mas maraming Pilipino na makapaglaro ng basketball sa professional level..." Gerald Anderson on MPBL stint: ‘Mas pangarap ko ‘to kaysa mag-artista’

Gerald Anderson was alongside ABL champion and UAAP MVP Ray Parks Jr. as one of the faces of the 2018 Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League Anta Datu Cup. Come opening day on Tuesday at the Araneta Colseum, however, unfortunately, the Kapamilya star was unable to make his long-awaited debut. Anderson stood from the sidelines in street clothes as the rest of the Marikina Shoemakers downed the General Santos Warriors, 88-81. Asked why he wasn’t suited up post-game, he answered, “Yung usual injury ng player. Nagkataon lang na nangyari sa akin week before (first game ng MPBL).” As it turns out, the Ikaw Lang ang Iibigin star suffered a hamstring injury not even a week before the MPBL’s opening day. “Sinubukan ko gawin lahat. Medyo malungkot at broken-hearted nga ako kanina,” he shared. He then continued, “Matagal ko ‘to inabangan, but ganun talaga.” And so, Anderson will have to wait nine more days to finally get to play in the semi-pro league. From now until then, Marikina will do nothing but look for big things from their Filipino-foreigner. As head coach Elvis Tolentino put it, “Aside kay Yves [Sazon], kay Gerald, malaki expectations ko.” The good news for the Shoemakers is that Anderson is only ready and raring to return their trust in him – especially as it is his dream to play with them. “Kung mataas expectation niya sakin, lalo na ako kaya nga kung walang taping, may (training) session ako sa bahay,” he said. He then continued, “Iba na ‘to e. ‘Di ‘to basta-bastang liga. Mas pangarap ko nga to kesa mag-artista e.” Hopefully, his dream finally turns into reality when Marikina takes on Muntinlupa in Laguna on June 21. --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @riegogogo......»»

Japeth, Romeo lead netizens’ Gilas 3x3 Dream Team; Lassiter, Rosario complete cast

Japeth Aguilar headlined ABS-CBN Sports’ recent poll of Filipino netizens’ Filipino Dream Team for a 3x3 tournament following Gilas Pilipinas’ gallant stand at the 2018 FIBA 3x3 World Cup. The Ginebra forward led all candidates with 28 mentions on our Facebook and Twitter polls as of 11:30 AM, while TNT star and 3x3 fan favorite Terrence Romeo was close behind with 26 combined votes. San Miguel gunner Marcio Lassiter and KaTropa Troy Rosario, a member of the recent Pinoy 3x3 squad at the FIBA World Cup, were tied at 20 to complete the dream squad. Two high-scoring swingmen, and two mobile bigs who can stretch the floor while gobbling up those rebounds is definitely a good combination for 3x3’s electric style of play. The current iteration of the Pinoy 3X3 squad was the strongest one yet,  made up of Christian Standhardinger, RR Pogoy, Stanley Pringle, and Troy Rosario but fell just short of qualifying into the next round of eliminations of the 2018 FIBA 3X3 World Cup, but the host squad put up a good fight, even stunning no. 6 Brazil in the Filipinos’ lone win in the tournament. How would you think the 'new' squad will fare? Barely missing the cut is rejuvenated Alaska big man Vic Manuel, who amassed a total of 19 points in the online poll. San Miguel center and four-time MVP June Mar Fajardo garnered 16 votes to place sixth, while Stanley Pringle and Calvin Abueva were tied at 14 mentions each. Beermen Arwind Santos (12) and Christian Standhardinger (11) round out the top 10 of the poll. POLL: After Gilas Pilipinas' gallant stand in the FIBA #3X3WC...
