Lacuna introduces new MPD chief
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna formally introduced to City Hall officials and employees yesterday the new acting director of the Manila Police District (MPD) in the person of Col. Arnold Thomas Ibay, who she believes will ably intensify the maintenance of peace and order in the city. In presenting the new MPD chief, Lacuna said Ibay is an old hand in the premier police district who has held various positions. He left the district for about a year and has come back to hold the top police post in Manila. “Under his leadership, he is expected to intensify peace and order in the city,” Lacuna said. The mayor also cited the forthcoming huge events in the city, namely the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections and the observance of All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day or Undas. She said she and Ibay already met regarding measures that have to be putin place to ensure the peaceful and orderly conduct of the said occasions. Ibay was made to host the regular flag-raising last Monday wherein he introduced the lady mayor. Lacuna, for her part, asked Ibay to momentarily stay with her as she formally introduced him to officials and employees of Manila City Hall, jesting that being a man of few words, he forgot to introduce himself. Meanwhile, Lacuna called on city government workers to use the week as another chance to render the best possible public service, saying the qualityof the work they do is a reflection of their love not only for their jobs, but also for their fellowmen and the city in general. ARI in troika to build Visayas wind project
Aboitiz Renewables Inc. or ARI, the renewable energy arm of Aboitiz Power Corp., Singapore-headquartered Vena Energy, and Cebu-based Vivant Energy Corp., have teamed up to develop, build, and operate a 200-megawatt or MW wind project in the Visayas. The project, dubbed as San Isidro Wind Power Project, will be built in San Isidro, a fourth-class coastal municipality in the Province of Northern Samar. It will be undertaken by the joint venture company that the parties formed called Lihangin Wind Energy Corp. Construction starts Q4 2023 As disclosed in the separate stock reports of ARI and Vivant Energy on Wednesday, which are both publicly listed companies, the wind plant will begin construction within the last quarter of the year. It is scheduled to be completed by early 2025. “We are excited to partner with Vena Energy and Vivant Energy so that together, we can contribute to the Philippines’ clean energy aspirations. This undertaking demonstrates ARI’s progress in growing its renewable energy capacity to 4,600 MW,” ARI president and chief operating officer James Arnold Villaroman. “Each of these investments is an important step to achieving a 50:50 balance in our renewable and thermal portfolios. We are very excited about these opportunities to contribute to the country’s energy transition journey,” he added. Meanwhile, Emil Andre Garcia, president and COO of Vivant Energy, reiterated that their undertaking will “bring us closer to the goal to expand our RE portfolio to 30 percent by 2030.” “We welcome this opportunity to partner with two leaders in renewable energy development who share our vision of helping the country attain energy security while promoting renewable energy and contributing to countrywide development,” Garcia said. Most diversified AboitizPower presently has the largest and most diversified local renewable energy platform in terms of installed capacity under its operational control. Keeping it together
It’s no longer unusual, nowadays, for a family to have one or both parents working in another country, or for grown children to relocate abroad for work or start their own family. Single parenting is also quite common, right along there with blended families and LGBTQ unions with kids. Yet even when families are together in one place — one home, compound, neighborhood or city — it takes a lot to stay “together,” literally and figuratively. Perhaps sensing the threats to what is recognized as society’s basic foundation, our government in 1992 decided to declare the last week of September as Family Week, as mandated by Proclamation 60 signed by then President Fidel V. Ramos. Ramos wanted the week to emphasize the importance of the family as “the foundation of the nation” and “as a basic autonomous social institution,” as well as recognize “the sanctity of family life,” as stated in the Constitution of the Philippines. The world may transform in many ways, but the need for family will never change. “No matter how much life changes and the concept of family evolves, it may continue to benefit human health and wellness by offering a sense of belonging and support,” it aptly states in an article on Better Help, which also enumerates the factors affecting family life as “advancements in technology, changing cultural norms, new priorities and advanced forms of communication fueled by the internet.” The sense of belonging one gains from being part of a family — whether it is in a traditional setup, adoptive or “chosen,” a new kind of family defined in these modern times — has a profound impact on one’s well-being. With government providing the impetus for today’s families to connect or reconnect during the annual Family Week, it is up to each one of us to take steps to keep ours together in these fast-paced, nomadic, dysfunctional times. In the local setting, we already see so many signs of the changing dynamics among families. We could wade through studies to figure out all the issues affecting our core foundation, but we believe one may truly gain more understanding by examining our own experiences. Here, we share the views of people in our sphere, in answer to our query: What do you consider as the biggest challenge for your family in these trying times? Gigie Arcilla, Editor-in-chief Dealing with young adult children presents the challenge of establishing boundaries as they seek independence and transition into adulthood. Striking a balance between support and autonomy, as well as providing guidance while allowing room for growth, can be difficult, especially for a single parent. You also cannot work (no work, no pay for freelancers such as myself) if you are sick. Gratefully, none of us in the family are currently seriously ill. It’s just that given that these trying times are also marked by corruption, medical gaslighting, new diseases and viruses and climate change, health problems have become even more threatening. Cervical, breast cancer awareness stressed
Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna called on all women residents of the city to be aware of the illnesses common to women as she pushed for the early detection of cervical and breast cancer. Lacuna aired the message as she was joined by Manila Health Department chief Dr. Arnold “Poks” Pangan, Vice Mayor Yul Servo, Department of Public Health Undersecretary Ma. Rosario Vergeire and Philippine Cancer Society Inc. program director Romeo Marcaida during the Intensified Cervical Cancer Screening for Manila City Hall employees held at the City Hall’s Freedom Triangle yesterday. In the said event, Lacuna described as “alarming” the fact that breast and cervical cancer are among the top killers in the country nowadays. She said that public hospitals have the capability to detect cancer at an early stage but lamentably, it is usually too late for many when the said illness is detected. As she also encouraged all female employees to have themselves tested, the mayor expressed concern over the increase in cases of cervical cancer, which is considered a “silent killer,” which manifests in its late stage already. The lady mayor urged all women in Manila to have themselves checked as she also called on parents to have their children aged nine to 14 vaccinated against human papillomavirus, the virus that causes most cervical cancers as well as some cancers of the anus, vulva, vagina and oropharynx or the back of throat including base of tongue and tonsils. She urged women aged 30 to 49 to have themselves screened for breast and cervical cancer where any abnormality may be detected at once. This was announced at the closing minutes yesterday of 24 Oras, the primetime newscast on GMA 7 that Enriquez anchored for 19 years. His fellow anchors Mel Tiangco, Vicky Morales and Emil Sumangil couldn’t hide their sadness as they read the network’s statement announcing Enriquez’s passing on 29 August. Enriquez spent a total of 29 years on the GMA Network, as news anchor of 24 Oras and its predecessor Saksi, and as host of the long-running investigative docudrama Imbestigador and head of its regional and radio subsidiaries. He became a household name with his unique brand of delivering the news, which commanded authority but was not too formal, allowing him to inject casual remarks. Born Miguel Castro Enriquez on 29 September 1951, the multi-awarded broadcaster began his career as a staff announcer at the Manila Broadcasting Company in 1969. He went on to work as disc jockey, reporter, desk editor, program director and station manager in various stations, including Radio Mindanao Network where he steered to success DWKC 93.9 on FM radio as station manager and DJ. Enriquez left RMN in 1994 and joined GMA in the same year to lead its radio operations, but was soon convinced by his GMA bosses to be a news anchor. He first worked on-cam in the network’s coverage of the 1995 senatorial elections. The veteran radio-TV anchor went on medical leave in December 2021 to undergo kidney transplant. In a previous interview, Enriquez shared that aside from battling diabetes, he also underwent heart bypass surgery in 2018. After his medical hiatus, Enriquez headlined GMA-7’s Eleksyon 2022: The GMA News and Public Affairs’ Election Coverage with fellow GMA News pillars Mel Tiangco, Vicky Morales, Arnold Clavio, Howie Severino and Jessica Soho. Shortly after, he returned to his regular programs on GMA’s flagship AM radio station Super Radyo DZBB 594. Enriquez also hosted Super Balita sa Umaga and Saksi sa Dobol B. Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has initiated several key infrastructure projects in Catbalogan, Samar in line with his commitment to help pave the way for development and progress in the area through continued collaboration with the local government led by Gov. Sharee Ann Tan. The senator’s support in these initiatives as vice chairperson of the Senate Committee on Finance was highlighted by his presence during the Adlaw han Barangay 2023, a significant part of the Samar Day Celebration, on Friday, 11 August. One of these activities is the opening of the Tandaya Hall in Catbalogan City where Go participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony together with Samar Governor Tan, Vice Governor Arnold Tan, BHW (Barangay Health Worker) Partylist Representestive Natasha Co, Catbalogan City Mayor Dexter Uy and other local officials. The inauguration was also witnessed by 24 mayors and vice mayors together with their councilors, and 951 barangay captains and their kagawads. Go was also instrumental in the construction of the New Catbalogan City Hall, a new Sports Complex, and the Lagundi-San Andres Access Road. Makati resists Taguig City attempt to takeover 14 public schools at EMBO
Taguig City personnel's attempt to take over the 14 schools in ten enlisted men's barrio (EMBO) on Saturday, 12 August was thwarted by a barricade of combined force of residents non-government organizations, Bantay Bayan, and the police. As early as 6:00 a.m. the barricade was put up near the said schools as they get ready for the arrival of those ordered to take over the schools. In a one-page notice to proceed signed by Dr. Cynthia L. Ayles, officer-in-charge of the Schools Division Superintendent of Taguig City, Mr. Alvin I. Riberfa, the authorized representative of Joint Ventures of Best Security Agency, Inc. and Best Arms Security Agency Inc., was directed to assign and deploy the necessary number of security guard to man the public schools. The schools indicated in the notice are Fort Bonifacio Elementary School, Cembo Elementary School, South Cembo Elementary School, Pitogo Elementary School, East Rembo Elementary School, Comembo Elementary School, West Rembo Elementary School, Pembo Elementary School, Makati Science High School, Benigno S. Aquino High School, Tibagan High School, Bonifacio High School and Pitogo High School. However, Makati City General Services Officer Arnold Magpantay quickly directed Jaime M. Dimaano, authorized the representative of Greatstar Security Services Inc. to implement strict security measures and safeguard the property by not allowing the personnel from Taguig City to enter the school premises without written consent from the city government of Makati. The concerned residents, bantay bayan, NGOs, and the police of Makati City immediately deployed their personnel to prevent the apparent takeover without the necessary papers from the city government of Makati and even from the court. When the entourage from Taguig City composed of the Traffic Management Office and the supposed security guards to be deployed arrived they failed to implement the takeover because they could not show any pertinent papers for their action. Earlier, Makati City Mayor Abby Binay said the schools and other facilities at the 10 EMBO barangays are titled with the city government and said it cannot be taken by Taguig City even if they have won the jurisdictional case as per the Supreme Court ruling. Further, Makati City challenged Taguig City to show their numbers to make sure that they can give the necessary services amounting to P9 billion the city has been giving its 322,000 residents that will be under their wings now base on the court ruling. Residents are also wary of the free maintenance medicines, school uniforms and other services Makati has been giving them since time immemorial. The only response the residents has been receiving from Mayor Lani Cayetano is that they can give the necessary services without elaborating where the city government will get it. The biggest food event of the year
Culinary events such as food bazaars, collab dinners among some of the best Filipino chefs in the metro and a pub crawl highlighted the inaugural Manila Food and Wine Festival held from 14 to 28 July. With activities spread out over a month, the MFWF was a culinary tourism celebration presented by the Department of Tourism and the MFWF Team led by Our Awesome Planet’s Anton Diaz, RestoPH’s Spanky Enriquez and Cebu Food and Wine Festival’s Kate Dychangco-Anzani. Its aim, said the organizers, was to introduce the Philippines and establish it as a culinary destination in Asia and the world, similar and at par with Singapore, Hong Kong and Bangkok, Thailand. Opening with grandeur and flair at The Westin Manila, the MFWF saw special guest merchants and innovators from the food and beverage industry, including Luisita Rum, Sebastian’s Ice Cream, Esguerra Kurobuta, Destileria Limtuaco, Karabella Dairy, Macaron Macaron and Mooncakes by the Hungry Chef, joining the grand launch. [gallery columns="2" size="full" ids="165799,165802"] The MFWF offered a plethora of exciting activities, including the festival bazaar at the Grand Atrium of Shangri-La Plaza, a Sunday lunch curation by chef Reggie Aspiras, a Makati Poblacion pub crawl and a food stamping program. One of the highlights of the event was a series of chef collaborations involving some of the best restaurants in Antipolo, Tagaytay, and Metro Manila. Antipolo Evolution, a 12-hands collaboration, took place at Tahanan Bistro. It featured a nine-course dinner prepared by chefs Danilo Botor Puga II of Burrow Cafe, Florence Hässig of Vieux Chalet, Kevin Tuason and Nikki Macaraig of Tahanan Bistro, culinary extraordinaire Editha Singian and Monique Tancongco of Moniquecakesph. Another 12-hands collaboration, Cavite Fresh! was held at My Country House in Tagaytay. It had six talented chefs working together to prepare a meal to remember — Jayjay SyCip of The Fatted Calf, Kalel Chan of Farmer’s Table, Rhea SyCip of Flour Pot Manila, Rhea Rizzo of Mrs. Saldo’s, Anthony Mendoza of Tuny’s and Arnold Gozon of My Country House. Destination dining featuring the freshest produce from Cavite, it turned out a sold-out crowd. Now, this one is different and unique because it puts forward Tsinoy heritage cuisine which, as Chef Sharwin says it, “is rich in culture and history, built on the backs of immigrants scraping by when they were deemed fifth class citizens. It nourished generations of Tsinoys who’ve made their mark on this nation and yet, it’s so undervalued that some Filipinos don’t even recognize it as Filipino. It’s so underrated, that even the ones who were raised on this food don’t dare lift it up.
