PBA:Wow mali! Guiao gets the wrong Semerad

ANTIPOLO CITY --- NLEX head coach Yeng Guiao was not happy with Talk ‘N Text forward David Semerad’s rough play on his big man Poy Erram in the last seconds of the fourth quarter with the game already decided. The fiery mentor approached Semerad after the final buzzer and made him know that his actions were not necessary. “Di ko naman siya inaway, napagsabihan ko lang kasi nagrereklamo si Poy. The game was already decided, tapos na, tinu-twist pa rin ni Semerad yung arm niya eh nasaktan daw siya. Sabi niya parang mababali,” said Guiao on Wednesday after the Road Warriors absorbed an 87-102 beating at the hands of the KaTropa in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup at the Ynares Sports Center here. Erram fouled out with just 13.1 second remaining in the game that’s already under wraps after he warded off Semerad while jostling for position. Erram approached the referee complaining about Semarad twisting his arm on the said play.   Guiao didn’t take it sitting down. “So sabi ko, ‘That’s not necessary’ sa ganoong situation, the game was already won,” he said. “Wala namang necessity to be that rough or rugged. Nagreklamo si Poy sa akin so I just needed to put the message across.” Unfortunately, Guiao got the wrong Semerad. It turned out that the mentor confronted David’s twin brother, Anthony, the whole time.     “Akala ko ba, yung kanina? Eh wala naman akong pakialam kung sino sa kanila yun. Pwede na yun di ba?” said Guiao, drawing a good laugh from reporters during the postgame interview. “Wala naman akong pakialam sa kanila kung sino man. Ikwento na lang niya sa isa,” continued Guiao. “Wala akong pakialam kung napagkamalan ko sila. Alam na nila yun kung sino yun.” The good thing here, for Guiao, he got the message across.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Financial case a cloud over unprecedented City titles feat

By Rob Harris, Associated Press LONDON (AP) — After the FA Cup was raised aloft by Manchester City's players, the Wembley Stadium pyrotechnics didn't cast a cloud over the team's unprecedented sweep of English soccer's men's trophies. The only shadow came from the investigations by soccer authorities into leaked documents that allegedly show the game's costliest squad was assembled thanks to mechanisms employed to try to circumvent spending regulations. A 6-0 rout of Watford on Saturday, delivered by players who cost more than $200 million in transfer fees, ensured the FA Cup joined the Premier League trophy, League Cup and Community Shield already in City's possession. The only piece of silverware missing is from the competition City could be banned from next season: the Champions League. City arrived at Wembley reeling from UEFA investigators last week sending the governing body's judges a file into how the Abu Dhabi-owned club sought to allegedly dupe the governing body to comply with Financial Fair Play. And the team left the national stadium with manager Pep Guardiola seething to face questions about the cloud over City's feat. "We are not guilty (until) proven," Guardiola said. "Would I say this club makes a step forward from the big investment from Sheikh Mansour? Definitely. Can you do that without top players? No way. That money helps to buy the incredible players we have? Yes. "After that we wait. If we are punished, we will accept it. But I listen to my chairman and my CEO, they give me the arguments for why they are under investigation and I trust them. When they tell me we were fair, we did it absolutely following the rules, I'm sorry, I believe them. If the opponents and contenders believe that's it's just the money ... it is OK they will be a problem." Guardiola is the only City figure publicly responding to questions about the FFP investigation, despite not being a director. Leaving Wembley, City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak only gave a thumb's up when asked about the club's potential Champions League ban. Leaks of internal correspondence published by German outlet Der Spiegel last year showed how City used companies linked to the Abu Dhabi ownership to boost revenue in an attempt to curb losses and comply with UEFA regulations. City hasn't disputed the authenticity of the documents. The Football Leaks group also published details showing how Roberto Mancini, who managed City from 2009 to 2013, received more pay from a team Sheikh Mansour owns in Abu Dhabi to work as a consultant than from the Manchester club. Mancini was the last City manager to win the FA Cup in 2012. City hasn't responded to questions sent by The Associated Press in November asking if Guardiola had any similar arrangements to Mancini, and the manager was infuriated to be asked Saturday if he received any payments from Abu Dhabi. "Do you know the question you are asking me — if I receive money from another situation today?" Guardiola said. "Do you think I deserve to make this kind of question ... the day I won the treble, if I received money from another situations?" Guardiola is yet to provide an answer. City did not respond to a follow-up text message on the issue......»»

PBA Finals: Terrence takes last shot at haters after first title

Terrence Romeo has been the subject of criticism for much of his PBA career. He’s been called a lot of harsh things and he’s being mainly attacked for his lack of team success and his supposed attitude problem. Romeo still has some things to work on in terms of controlling his emotion but Terrence finally crossed out a major bucket list entry by winning his first PBA title. After San Miguel’s Game 7 win over Magnolia in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup Finals, Romeo is now a champion and Terrence couldn’t help but take one last shot at his detractors. Gusto ko lahat sabay-sabay sila sabihin nila,” he added. Romeo was man enough to admit that the constant hate thrown towards him affected his psyche particularly when he was piling up points but failed to pile up wins. When he was traded to TNT, supposedly his first real chance at a championship, things unraveled so fast and the situation actually got worse for Terrence. “Actually naapektuhan ako before kasi three years kong hinawakan sunud-sunod yung scoring champion. Binigay ko yung best ko every conference pero one-time lang ako nakaabot ng semis,” Romeo said. “Lahat ginagawa ko hindi ko maabot yung dream ko. So ayon, nalipat ako ng Talk ’N Text. Pagdating ko ng Talk ’N Text ganon din, hindi rin ako umabot ng semis,” he added. Finding his way to San Miguel Beer, Romeo discovered a home and has learned to embrace his role behind the team’s more established stars. Sacrificing individual honor, Terrence finally got the dream he’s been chasing for a long time and it’s all worth it. “At least, para sa akin nafulfill ko pa rin na naging part ako ng champion team na may natulong pa rin ako,” he said. “Siguro naniniwala ako, pinanghawakan ko na lang na si God talagang may plano para sa isang tao. So inantay ko lang talaga yung perfect timing niya kung kailan niya ibibigay sa akin. Eto na yung time na yon kaya lahat ng haters ko mag-ingay,” Romeo added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

UAAP Season 81 Finals: UST alumni to fly Rondina and Bicar’s families to Manila for Game 2

Sisi Rondina’s family will get a chance to cheer for the University of Sto. Tomas star in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball Finals series after all. A group of prominent UST alumni upon learning that Rondina’s family in Cebu has no means of travelling to Manila because of budget constraint after the graduating hitter and breadwinner bought a 2-storey pre-selling house in their hometown in Compostela, decided to shoulder their airfare and accommodation expenses. [Related story: UAAP Season 81 Finals: Hindi na kami makakaranas ng hirap -- Rondina]     “It’s the UST community, we’re a family,” a UST alumnus, who requested anonymity, told ABS-CBN Sports in a message on Sunday.      The Season 81 Most Valuable Player, the first Tigress to capture the highest individual recognition since UST legend Venus Bernal bagged it back in Season 69, led the Espana-based squad to a 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, victory over Ateneo de Manila University in Game 1 of the best-of-three championship at the Big Dome on Saturday. Rondina finished with game-high 23 points as she helped the Tigresses move a win away from reclaiming the throne after a nine-year drought. As a gesture of appreciation for her service to the school and for bringing the UST community together, the UST alumni will fly Rondina’s family to Manila in time for Game 2 on Wednesday. In addition, the group will also bring in the family of Tigresses setter Alina Bicar from Samar. The playmaker was also instrumental in UST’s series-opening romp, tallying 19 excellent sets in a superb ball distribution that helped the Tigresses fire 46 attack points.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

A mother’s day message from prison

You don’t have to cry in front of me to let me know how painful it is that your mom and your father are both in jail. When you were still a child, you’ve been asking me why I can’t be like other ordinary moms, similar to the mothers of your classmates – they work 8am to 5pm, see their children off to school, attend PTA meetings, etc. I know now you understand why I’m not ordinary like them. It was even you who said I must have been a superwoman or Darna for doing all the things I did for the people while taking care of our family. UAAP Season 81 Finals: Yes Ate Ging, tayo naman -- Rondina

Prized hitter Sisi Rondina woke up on Saturday with a message coming from one of her volleyball inspirations. University of Sto. Tomas legend Ging Balse-Pabayo gave the graduating skipper a few words of advice as Rondina prepared for Game 1 of the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball best-of-three Finals.    “Umaga pa lang nag-message na sa akin si Ate Ging sabi nya, ‘Lagyan lang talaga ng puso, effort lahat ng gagawin nyo,’” Rondina said. A member of UST’s Season 69 champion team, Rondina just felt overwhelmed that a Tigresses legend took time to give wish her well.    “Sabi n’ya, proud na proud siya sa amin. Sabi ko sa kanya, ‘Yes Ate Ging. Sana makita namin kayo mamaya. Tayo naman,’” continued the Season Most Valuable Player. “Nag-reply siya na, ‘Oo, tayo naman.’” Inspired by words of encouragement from a former Queen Tigress, Rondina played like a woman possessed, wowing the crowd with her explosiveness as UST swept Ateneo de Manila University, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, to draw first blood in their Finals showdown.      The Cebuana-native finished with 23 points with 20 coming off attacks added 12 digs for the Tigresses, who moved a win away from reclaiming the crown it last held in nine years ago in Season 72. Balse-Pabayo witnessed UST’s impressive stand as she was joined by another UST legend in Venus Bernal, the last Tigresses Most Valuable Player award winner (Season 69) before Rondina.   “Ang sarap sa feeling na isa sa mga beterana nagbigay ng tiwala sa amin na kaya namin and naniniwala na makukuha at makukuha namin,” she said. From one queen to another, Rondina stayed true to her word. Now, only one win separates her from fulfilling her promise.     --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

PBA Finals: Stunt backfires as “Spidey” can’t even vote now

Spider-Man was so far from home Friday night. A random man dressed as the Marvel hero stormed the court of the Araneta Coliseum, halting the crucial Game 5 of the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup Finals between San Miguel Beer and Magnolia. He ended up hitting five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo in one of the craziest incidents in league history. Spidey, who was been identified 31-year-old Paolo Felizarta by police, tried to justify the stunt as something that was done in the name of love. “Gusto ko lang po magmahalan tayo,” he said. “Ito lang po talaga pagkakataon para maayos tayo lahat,” he added. Spidey brought a ton of signages on court, which were vehicles to deliver his message pretty much. At the QCPD station 7, some of the signages included messages such as, “Love Philippines” and “Vote Wisely This May 13.” However, the stunt has backfired on Spidey and Felizarta will have no chance to practice what he was preaching. With PBA set to file charges of unjust vexation plus alarm and scandal, Felizarta will be detained at least a week as his case gets processed. He will miss the mid-term elections on Monday.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»
