Beauty philosophy that surpasses time
Beauty, as it has evolved, goes beyond looks -- it discerns and does good. And for practicing such a philosophy, the Filipino brand Human Nature proves both timeliness and timelessness as it marks 15 years in the industry. Through a stylized gallery at Odd Cafe in Makati, the homegrown brand showcased its flagship beauty innovations, its newest limited-edition line and its recently launched breakthrough face care products. A new generation of influencers who embody the brand’s vision and are passionate about collaborating with authentic and purpose-driven brands graced the event. “Fifteen years ago, we started with a dream of introducing the promise of beauty that is kind to the skin, local communities and planet. Today, we are the pioneer local brand in the country to come up with a full range of natural and clean beauty and personal care innovations made by Filipinos for Filipinos. We are where we are today because of our fellow Filipinos who believe in us. So, in this milestone event, it’s you whom we celebrate!” Human Nature founder and president Anna Meloto-Wilk said. In celebration of its 15th-year milestone, Human Nature launched its thoughtfully made, limited edition design that embodies everything we believe in — the depth and diversity of the Filipina’s beauty that glows from within. Its design takes inspiration from the art style of Cubism, expressing women’s beauty in a multi-dimensional way through a play of elements. The brand also introduced its newest face care innovations for day-to-night natural glow. The Sunflower Beauty Oil with Bakuchiol (P299.75) will surely give that youthful glow from an expertly crafted concoction of new skincare superstar Bakuchiol. The well-loved Sunflower Beauty Oil is known to bring 25 beauty miracles. Get radiance beyond compare with Vitamin C + Hya Calamansi Radiance Serum (P495), which boasts of plant-based vitamin C and locally sourced calamansi. “Human Nature takes pride in crafting world-class local products that are all at least 95 percent natural, effective and free from harmful chemicals – allowing you to enjoy nurturing glow from head to toe. But there’s more to this glow than what meets the eye, just as how we believe that beauty is more than skin-deep,” Human Nature co-founder Camille Meloto-Rodriguez noted. Core advocacies Each product is expertly formulated by Filipino scientists and are 100 percent manufactured locally. Whenever possible, the brand uses locally grown ingredients no matter the cost to help homeland and local farmers thrive (Pro-Philippines). Going beyond profit, the brand dreams for the working poor to rise out of poverty and help create a new middle class. HABI jurors laud skill and artistry of piñaand abaca competition winners
Celebrating innovation and creativity among today’s young weavers, Habi: The Philippine Textile Council announced the winners of its two prestigious weaving competitions for piña and abaca, which were chosen by some of the top names in Philippine textile and fashion, and showcased at the highly attended Likhang Habi Fair in Makati City on 13 to 15 October. Topping the Lourdes Montinola Piña Competition, which received over 30 entries, was Marilyn Almero of La Herminia Piña Weaving, for her “Peacock” piece, which also won her the special Filip + Inna Innovation Award and P50,000. First runner-up was Raquel Eliserio for her “Piña Ina” creation, who took home P30,000; while second runner-up was Anna India Legazpi of Heritage Arts and Culture, who also took home P20,000, for her “Argyle Pattern on Piña Seda.” The Nadres Outstanding Young Weaver Award and P20,000 cash prize went to 26-year-old Zairel Rebusta, a weaver at La Herminia Piña Weaving from Aklan, one of Habi’s regular exhibitors. “The outstanding feature [Rebusta’s] piece is that it’s full ringgue — a gauze-like open weave. This is seldom done and resulted in a very light and soft textile. The insects laid in with the suksuk method are random, which is not easy to do,” said Adelaida Lim, Habi president emeritus. All piña and abaca entries underwent meticulous inspection by a distinguished group of jurors composed of heritage advocates, notable fashion designers and distinguished artisans and craftsmen. Now on its sixth year, the Lourdes Montinola Piña Competition is the country’s premier piña weaving contest. Named after local textile champion Lourdes Reyes-Montinola, chair emeritus of the Far Eastern University, the competition invites local artisans from all over the Philippines to join and proudly exhibit their talents in weaving, dyeing, embroidering, and embellishing piña. The competition aims to keep this traditional craft alive, as well as further promote appreciation and use of Philippine textiles. Training the spotlight on the use of abaca, Habi also held the 2nd Eloisa Hizon Gomez Abaca Weaving competition, which celebrates the well-loved and versatile abaca fiber, as well as its namesake — a prominent Kapampangan who actively encouraged the use of Filipino textiles, and is mother to popular haute couture ‘70s fashion designer-turned-monk Gang Gomez, now known as Dom Martin Gomez, OSB. Winners of the abaca weaving competition include Anna India Legazpi, who won under the Applied Abaca Category; Agustin Tawi Sudaw, for the Abaca Ikat Category; and Edgar Cornito’s “Beyond the Horizon” piece under the Pure Abaca Category. All winners took home P50,000 each as part of their prize. “The innovation really stood out — it’s something different all the way, and what’s beautiful is that you see the innovation coming from the young,” said one of the competition’s judges, Vicky Vizcarra Amalingan-Sales, chair of S.C. Vizcarra Inc., a major brand synonymous with fine, handcrafted bags and home items made of wicker. For the Piña Weaving competition, Sales was joined on the juror panel by no less than Far Eastern University chair emeritus Lourdes Montinola herself; Felicidad Nadres, founder of EN Barong Filipino Inc.; textile designer, heritage conservationist and social activist Patis Tesoro; and author and heritage advocate Felice Sta. Maria. Meanwhile, on the juror panel for the abaca competition were the daughter of Eloisa Hizon Gomez, Erlie Gomez Manaloto; top designers Ditta Sandico, Noli Hans, Barge Ramos and Filip + Inna creative director Len Cabili. All competitors also showcased their works at the recently concluded Likhang Habi Market Fair, the annual three-day exhibit, bazaar, and educational event highlighting the country’s weaving culture. Starting as a 12-booth event back in 2009, Likhang Habi now has over 100 participants, drawing huge crowds year after year. “The idea of our fair is to really go out to the weaving communities and encourage them to come,” says Habi chair emeritus Maribel Ongpin. “Most are now self-sufficient, and we now have a waiting list.” The post HABI jurors laud skill and artistry of piñaand abaca competition winners appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
Bianca Umali to star in ‘Encantadia’ spin-off series ‘Sang’gre’
Bianca Umali is currently “booked and busy,” especially now that she is confirmed to be a part of the highly-anticipated spin-off series Sang’gre. On 23 October, Umali confirmed in a televised interview that she would play Terra, the daughter of the major character Danaya, in the spin-off. “Hindi ko hiniling pero pinagkaloob pa rin sakin (I didn’t ask for it but it was given to me), that’s why I’m very, very thankful... I assure [you] that they will not be disappointed; I will not fail anyone,” Umali said, thanking her supporters and her home network for trusting her with this big project. The 23-year-old actress added that she has been working hard on her character as if she were preparing for a Marvel movie. She is currently undergoing training in arnis, the same weapon used by Danaya in the 2005 and 2016 versions of Encantadia. “I am preparing my physique for it, I am preparing my skills for it, and I have been studying everything about Encantadia,” she said. The actress revealed that she dreamt of being a part of the 2016 reboot, but she wasn’t called in for an audition nor she was considered for a role. “Na-realize ko na kaya pala, hindi pala dapat ako nalungkot nung mga oras na ‘yon na akala ko hindi ako kasali kasi meron palang ganito, meron palang para sa akin” (I realized that I needn’t have been sad that I wasn’t able to join, because eventually there was something also for me). During the San Diego Comic-con in July, resident GMA director Mark Reyes revealed the series concept art, to which Umali commented with a leaf emoji that hinted at her upcoming role in the series. Encantadia’s spin-off series has been officially in the works for a long time. In January 2022, Reyes posted a screenshot of a Zoom meeting with the show’s creative team on Instagram. Based on Reyes’ Instagram post, Encantadia’s creative team is composed of seasoned and talented individuals in the industry, including Encantadia creator Suzette Doctolero, screenwriter and National Artist for Film and Broadcast Arts Ricky Lee, creative heads RJ Nuevas and AliNokom-Dedicatoria, and writers Anna Aleta, Ays de Guzman and Jake Somera. Encantadia is a 2005 classic fantasy television series that revolves around four sisters or sang’gres tasked to be the new keepers of powerful gemstones. It starred Iza Calzado, Sunshine Dizon, Karylle and Diana Zubiri. A reboot was released in 2016, featuring Kylie Padilla, Glaiza de Castro, Gabbi Garcia and Sanya Lopez. Solons want probe on boat ramming incident off Pangasinan
Senators are eyeing to investigate the fatal ramming incident off the waters of Agno, Pangasinan, which resulted in the deaths of three Filipino fishermen last 2 October. In a radio interview, Senator Francis Tolentino pressed the need to conduct a Senate special investigation on the ramming incident to help establish the country's “archipelagic sea lane” and further prevent a repeat of the incident in the future. “Ang pakay dito ay ang pagbubuo ng archipelagic sea lanes. Ang ibig sabihin po nito ay iyong talagang daanan—dito dadaan yong mga barkong domestic, foreign at international vessels na malalaki, nang sa ganun alam ng ating mangingisda kung saan dadaan at makakaiwas sa isa’t isa (The intention here is to establish archipelagic sea lanes. That means, thiw Ould really determine where the domestic ships or huge foreign and international vessels should pass through so that Filipino fishermen would know and they could avoid the vessels),” Tolentino, who chairs the Senate committee on justice and human rights, told reporters on Saturday. Tolentino said he is weighing the idea of whether to start the investigation while still waiting for reports from concerned entities required by international rules. He then stressed that the “incident could have been avoided if the archipelagic sea lane in the Philippines had already been determined.” Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa earlier said he is planning to file a resolution to investigate the recent ramming incident between a Filipino boat and a foreign vessel off Pangasinan. “We will file a resolution to investigate who is really responsible for this. It’s a very unfortunate incident because you know fishermen went there for a living right and they ended up dying. It has to be investigated thoroughly by our authorities,” he said. Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Rear Adm. Armando Balilo told reporters on Friday that they have sent personnel to Singapore and reached out to the local Port State Control authority there “to inspect: the Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker, MV Pacific Anna. “The inspection should be targeted in the vessel compliance with the regulations of SOLAS Chapter V (safety of navigation); the result of their inspection could be used in our investigation,” Balilo said. He added that the PCG has also sent a formal request for the Marshall Islands Flag State to launch its own investigation into the incident. “We expect with this formal request the Flag State of Marshall Island will conduct a safety investigation in compliance with the IMO’s Casualty Investigation Code Chapter 6 that the state of the ship involved in a very serious maritime casualty is responsible for ensuring that a marine safety investigation be conducted and completed,” said Balilo. He said that the result of these investigations will be used to pursue claims and damages for the victims, survivors, and owner of FFB Dearyn, the Filipino boat that capsized in the incident. The PCG earlier said that the fatal sea collision was likely an accident. Dela Rosa, however, said all possibilities should be looked into “to determine everything.” “We have to leave no stone unturned sa pag-conduct ng investigation. So, kailangan talagang ma-determine ‘yan baka mamaya nga di natin alam (so we really need to determine the facts surrounding the incident),” he said. “I hope it was a plain accident. So that walang ibang (there’s no other) political or geopolitical implications. I hope, really,” he added. PBBM says govt will not tolerate agri hoarders as rice smugglers apprehended
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. reiterated that the government would not tolerate smugglers plaguing the agriculture sector as the government has already apprehended four rice traders for alleged smuggling and hoarding of rice. Speaking during the distribution of rice in Taguig on Wednesday, Marcos said the government will not tolerate those who take advantage and harm our livelihood and the entire agricultural sector. Marcos Jr. cited Republic Act No. 10845, which allows for the imprisonment for life and double fines for those proven to be smuggling agricultural products, including all associated taxes, duties, and charges. He also highlighted Republic Act No. 7581, which imposes heavy penalties on individuals caught illegally stockpiling supplies. Marcos also said that the government has charged four violators for violating the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act, the Rice Tariffication Law, and the Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act of 2016. "We have now filed charges against San Pedro Warehouse and Blue Sakura Agri Grain Corporation, F.S. Ostia Rice Mill, and Gold Rush Rice Mill for their actions," Marcos said. He also emphasized that there is no rice shortage in the country and placed the blame squarely on smugglers, hoarders, and price manipulators for the fluctuating prices. "You know, there shouldn't be any problem with rice. We have an abundant supply. Our buffer stock, as they say, our reserves are at 30 days, and it's steadily increasing," Marcos said, adding that the country would have more than 70 days of rice buffer after the harvest. President Marcos Jr. also commended the efforts of ordinary citizens engaged in urban farming initiatives in Taguig. He applauded projects like the BGC Community Farm, situated in the heart of Bonifacio Global City, and the City Farm led by student Anna Beatriz Suavengco, showcasing the cultivation of vegetables in an urban farm in North Signal, Taguig. The Taguig Agriculture Office was not left out of the President's praise, as he lauded their extensive efforts to promote urban gardening in communities. No idle hours at franchise-less but booming ABS-CBN
Content supplier ABS-CBN seems to be amply rewarding the stars and talents who have chosen to stay put with the company after it lost its broadcast franchise. The loyal ones are hardly without a project that keeps them busy and (hopefully) well-compensated for what they do best. These stars include Maricel Soriano, Angel Aquino, Kathryn Bernardo, Andrea Brillantes, JM Guzman, Belle Mariano and screen sweetheart Donnie Pangilinan, Chie Filomeno, Kaori Ozuma and Anthony Jennings. Actors, hosts, singers, record producers and comic talents who have stayed with the network remain “well-oiled” cogs in the ABS-CBN entertainment machine. With Cory Vidanes and Lauren Dyogi as the media company’s top honchos, as well as production divisions that conceptualize and execute projects from beginning to end (such as Dreamscape, JRB Creative Production, Project 8 and Rise), there are no idle hours in the ABS-CBN corporate offices and studios. There are also directors (such as FM Reyes, Emmanuel Palo, Richard Arellano and Jojo Saguin), creative managers (such as Carmi Raymundo and Jay Fernando) and musical scorers who get projects one after the other even if only on a contractual basis. Romantic leading men A change of mindset and attitude has occurred among the big stars. They have become really professional entertainment artists who have realized they don’t have to play lead roles all time. They remain adored and respected even when they portray vicious personalities who make life hard for the lead characters. They can then reemerge in their next projects as virtuous lead characters. Romantic leading men Ian Veneracion and JM de Guzman did contemptuous characters in the action series Iron Heart, topbilled by Richard Gutierrez, Jake Cuenca and Albert Martinez. The show is slated to end in two weeks (with major scenes shot in Japan though the series’ main setting is Cebu). De Guzman has just attended the media conference for the series Linlang (Deception), which he headlines along with Paulo Avelino and Kim Chiu. A major supporting actor in the new series that begins airing on 5 October is Maricel Soriano, whose “special participation” in the afternoon series Pira-pirasong Paraiso started only a few weeks ago. Soriano portrays a well-off grandmother in Pira-piraso and Linlang. Linlang is helmed by FM Reyes, who directed the ongoing ABS-CBN and TV 5 co-produced afternoon series Nag-aapoy na Damdamin. The new series is a suspense-thriller that will stream exclusively on Prime Video, available in the Philippines and in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Linlang has only 14 episodes, and new episodes drop every Thursday at midnight. Surely favorable to the finances of stars and talents is the invariably large cast of ABS-CBN series these days. For instance, Iron Heart features in major roles Albert Martinez, Dimples Romana, Christian Vasquez, Sofia Andres, and young actors Enzo Pineda, Louise Abuel (who is male) and Iggy Boy Flores. It has had as guest actors Maja Salvador, Sue Ramirez, Meryl Soriano, Maricel Laxa, Joem Bascon, Pepe Herrera, Roi Vinzon, Carmen Soo, Fabio Ide, Richard Quan, Ruby Ruiz, Anna Luna, Ruben Soriquez, Krystal Brimner, Cris Villanueva, Alex Medina, Anna Marin, child star Althea Ruedas, Al Tantay, Diether Ocampo, Karina Bautista, Victor Silayan, Kyle Echarri and Lou Yanong. The show also has four directors: Richard Arellano, Lester Pimentel Ong, Wang Yan Bin and Ian Loreños. As for Linlang, its support cast includes Karla Estrada, Jaime Fabregas, Raymond Bagatsing, Albie Casiño, Jake Ejercito, Heaven Peralejo, Adrian Lindayag, Race Matias, Benj Manalo, Lovely Abella, Frenchie Dy, Ross Pesigan, Hanna Lexie, Juno Advincula, Connie Virtucio, Lotlot Bustamante, Meann Espinosa, Danny Ramos, Bart Guingona, Vance Larena and Marc McMahon. Celebrating 77 Years of Danish-Philippine Diplomatic Relations through creativity
On 28 September, Denmark and the Philippines marked 77 years of strong diplomatic ties by emphasizing their shared passion for design and creativity. To honor this milestone, the Royal Danish Embassy Manila staged two projects that capture the fusion of Filipino creativity and uniqueness of Danish design, reflecting the richness of the countries’ longstanding relationship. Bridging our countries through LEGO One of the most symbolic representations of this mutual appreciation for creativity is the iconic LEGO – a Danish brand that has found its way to the hearts of many Filipino families, collectors, builder communities, and creative enthusiasts. You can also meet talented Filipinos working in LEGO headquarters in Denmark, driving design processes for various LEGO sets that land on toy store shelves worldwide. Venturing into the heart of the Philippines' historical richness, Danish Ambassador FranzMichael “Dan-Dan” Mellbin and Philippine Ambassador Leo Herrera-Lim explored the Philippines in bricks at the iMake History Fortress LEGO Education Center. The Education Center, nestled in historic Fort Santiago, is a joint project by the Royal Danish Embassy Manila, the Intramuros Administration, and Felta Multimedia, Inc and serves as an exhibition of historical and cultural landmarks in the Philippines – all built using LEGO. The center also conducts workshops to train the youth in architecture, design, engineering, and creativity using LEGO Education modules. Guided by the shared vision of fostering strong connections, the Ambassadors, along with Intramuros Administrator Joan Padilla, Felta Brand Activation Officer Jed Abiva-Sazon, Mme. Eva Fischer-Mellbin, and Mme. Fides Herrera-Lim, took the lead in building a symbolic bridge using LEGO as a representation of the strong connection of the two countries spanning over seven decades. Filipino art LEGO-fied From architectural wonders, LEGO bricks were creatively used as building blocks for classic masterpieces of Filipino maestro and National Artist, Fernando Amorsolo. Project AMORsolo, a mosaic LEGO exhibition by Pinoy LEGO Users Group (PinoyLUG) pays homage to the enduring legacy of the first Filipino National Artist. The exhibit replicates Amorsolo’s iconic paintings “Bayanihan”, “Dalagang Bukid”, and “Early Traders” using LEGO. To support PinoyLUG and masterpieces of Fernando Amorsolo, the Embassy hosted a Project AMORsolo installation in October 2023. During the event, PinoyLUG also unveiled a LEGO brick mosaic based on the iconic Danish artwork “Anna Ancher and Marie Krøyer on the beach at Skagen” by Michael Ancher, specially designed for the celebration. Gracing the event were members of the Amorsolo family including the artist’s daughter Slyvia Amorsolo Lazo and grandson Fernando “Nandy” Amorsolo Lazo, who now leads the Fernando C. Amorsolo Art Foundation dedicated to the promotion of the maestro’s unique style and artistic vision. Named after a playful combination of the Filipino artist’s name and the Spanish term for “love” (amor), Project AMORsolo was born out of interest of PinoyLUG’s members during the pandemic to build projects that go beyond LEGO’s usual notion of “play”, but also represents the Philippines’ rich art and creative culture. Project AMORsolo has been showcased in the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Manila City Hall, and shopping malls around Luzon, and now at the Danish Residence. Wielding the power of design together Both events contribute to the Embassy’s “Design Matters” campaign. This aims to celebrate and increase awareness on Denmark’s design values and drive for innovation while appreciating the Philippines’ artistic heritage and ingenuity. Danish design, characterized by simplicity, functionality, and minimalism, is a way of life. The campaign aims to inspire Filipinos about the beauty and practicality of Danish design, connecting it to the Filipino tradition of craftsmanship and vibrancy. Since September, the Embassy has featured testimonials, parallel design concepts, and collaborative efforts to integrate design thinking into policies. The Embassy looks forward to continue supporting the Philippines in cultivating a deeper appreciation for design and translate creative ideas to meaningful efforts set to improve Filipinos’ lives. ‘Senior High’ and ‘Fractured’: Youth is not wasted on these young stars
The shows Euphoria, Elite and 13 Reasons Why offer depictions of the so-called Generation Z that baffle, shock and titillate their audiences. The young people in these shows succumb to the call of their sexual urges, wantonly take prohibited drugs and drink themselves to catatonia. Raging hormones fuel their pursuit of YOLO (you only live once) moments and defiance of authority figures. That same sense of edgy, confused, tension-filled environment of sex and drugs are also in the local shows Senior High and Fractured, which follow the footsteps and narratives of their international counterparts in highlighting the many versions of truths and lies in the lives of their young characters. Central hook In Senior High, the stories of teenagers of different economic backgrounds in a private high school, their struggles with authority figures, and a big tragedy-mystery that needs to be resolved are the central anchor and hook. The made-for-TV campus that is Northford High looks and screams “mahal ang tuition.” Students are all in crispy Ivy League-inspired uniforms, and the typical school cliques are well- represented. What has been presented so far in the show’s 25 episodes are a tragic death, bullying, mental health, video scandals and online gossip accepted as gospel truth, homoeroticism, drugs, sexual predation and anger issues with parental and other authority figures. In the acting department, top-tier performances come from Andrea Brillantes, who plays the roles of twin sisters; JK Labajo, who brings a true rich-boy sophistication to his role; Elijah Canlas and Miggy Jimenez, both lending juicy and saucy touches to their juvenile delinquent characters; Kyle Echarri, exuding a becoming softness and knight-to-the rescue vibe; and Daniela Stranner, a delicious alpha mean girl. Among the authority figures, Angel Aquino, Mon Confiado, Anna Abad Santos and Baron Geisler -- in a career-defining performance – are superb. Senior High scratches the surface of teen troubles. As more episodes come, one hopes the problems of today’s youth get a more thorough dissection an a broader, more compassionate perspective. [caption id="attachment_191711" align="aligncenter" width="525"] The cast of ‘Fractured’[/caption] Trapped vloggers In Fractured, a group of popular, influential vloggers are invited to an is island resort to make content about it. The vloggers get their biggest plot twist when they are all marooned in what seems like a deserted part of the island resort. Aside from the elements, they have to contend with scarce food and water, the uncertainty of rescue and other looming dangers. Three episodes on, what makes Fractured an interesting watch is the deft manner by which the personal lives, problems, insecurities and dark sides of the vlogger characters are revealed. Since tensions among them are at an all-time high, catfights between femme vloggers erupt. Two of the macho vloggers assert alpha status, while a different and groovy kind of love blossoms between two male vloggers. Aside from the writing and glossy look of the show, the acting by Seth Fedelin, Francine Diaz, Kaori Oinuma, Daniela Stranner, Raven Rigor and Sean Tristan are also compelling come-ons. For all the chaos and darkness in Senior High and Fractured, we also witness real friendships forged by the young characters, love at its most romantic or bittersweet, and realizations and redemptions even. Youth is not wasted on the younger ones, after all. The post ‘Senior High’ and ‘Fractured’: Youth is not wasted on these young stars appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»

Chinese youths trade city-living for ceramics
China's "Porcelain Capital" Jingdezhen is attracting droves of young people drawn to the city of artisans in search of an escape from the urban rat race among its ceramics workshops. The picturesque eastern city home to China's best-known porcelain has seen an influx of young professionals seeking to learn an ancient art taught there for more than a thousand years. Times are tough for young people in China, with youth unemployment at record highs, sluggish economic growth and, for many, the opportunities their parents' generation enjoyed are simply not attainable. But in Jingdezhen they find something different: low rent, a slower pace of life and a proximity to nature in a city of just 1.6 million inhabitants, very small by Chinese standards. From her one-bedroom apartment on the seventh floor, He Yun, a 28-year-old illustrator, enjoys a panoramic view of the surrounding green hills for just 500 yuan ($68) a month. She arrived in Jingdezhen in June after being laid off and found a place where she didn't feel "any pressure". "I came because on social media everyone was saying that it was a great place for craft fans, like me, and that there was a scent of freedom," she said. "When I lost my job, I stayed at home and got depressed. But once I arrived here, I found that it's super easy to make friends." "No more need to set the alarm in the morning," she smiled. "I have zero pressure now!" - 'Looking for meaning' - A typical day for He starts with a laid-back breakfast, before heading to a workshop to make her ceramic candle holders and necklaces, which are then fired in one of the city's many kilns. "At the end of the afternoon, we go to the surrounding villages and swim in the streams to relax," she said. "I put my work on Xiaohongshu" -- a Chinese app similar to Instagram -- "where people contact me to buy. But we mainly sell at the market," she said. Between trendy cafes, boutiques and stands offer glasses, bowls, cups, teapots, plates, necklaces or earrings. Chen Jia, 24 with dyed red hair, makes feminist pendants in the shape of sanitary napkins. A music graduate who arrived in June, her first jobs as a piano teacher and in a milk tea shop and cafe weren't to her liking. "I am looking for meaning in my life," she said. "Many young people today no longer want to clock in at work at a fixed time." China's transformative economic rise was built on the backs of a growing middle class, who were promised they could enjoy the trappings of prosperity and give their children a better life if they worked hard enough. But the country's millennials and Gen Z have faced altogether different prospects: youth unemployment has reached a record level, exceeding 20 percent according to official figures, and pay is low. It's in that context that the "tangping" counterculture has thrived. Literally meaning "lying flat", it's come to represent a general rejection of society's expectations, giving up a great career and money to concentrate on a simple life and pleasures. And Jingdezhen has become a haven for those seeking just that. At the Dashu pottery school, around 20 students work with clay on their pottery wheels or chat as they sip iced lattes. Training costs 4,500 yuan a month ($617), a very affordable price. "Many young people cannot find work" explained the 39-year-old director who calls herself Anna. "They come here to reduce their anxiety." "Ceramics are very accessible. In two weeks, they can produce simple works and sell them at markets." - 'New life' - One of them, Guo Yiyang, 27, resigned in March from a well-paid job as a computer programmer. After working overtime for years, he said he wanted to "take a breather". "In big cities... you just work. You don't have your own life," he said, adding he "never again" sees himself working that way. "The desire for another way of life" is also what motivated Xiao Fei, 27, a former interior designer who resigned and came to Jingdezhen in June. "I didn't have time for myself," she said. "I came home tired and I didn't want to talk to others." "I feel happier, more free and I meet people who have the same ideals." According to Chinese media, 30,000 young urbanites lived in Jingdezhen in 2022. Few stay long-term but Xiao already knows that she doesn't want to go back. "After tasting this new life, I don't want to go back to an office job at all." ehl-oho/je/mtp/sn/pbt © Agence France-Presse The post Chinese youths trade city-living for ceramics appeared first on Daily Tribune......»»
