PBA: Standhardinger on SMB: “When we play hard, it’s hard to beat us“

The real San Miguel finally showed up. After a shock loss to Columbian to start their 2019 Philippine Cup title defense, the Beermen recovered rather quickly, pummeling Brgy. Ginebra Sunday at the Big Dome. While San Miguel once again got a dose of good old NSD late in the fourth period, the Beermen were dominant almost throughout, leading by as many as 23 points. The shock loss to the Dyip didn’t necessarily serve as a wake up call for San Miguel according to forward Christian Standhardinger. It’s just that when the Beermen are playing at least just near to their full potential, they’re almost pretty impossible to stop. They played well enough Sunday and they took down one of their chief contenders to the title. “I don’t know about a wake up call,” Standhardinger, who led all scorers with 26 points, said after the game. “I’m just happy we played good today and we played hard. When we play hard, it’s hard to beat us,” he added. Now missing Alex Cabagnot and Terrence Romeo to injury, the Beermen still had more than enough star power to dominate. And when the remaining stars, which included him with guards Chris Ross and Marcio Lassiter, found their mark against the Gin Kings... well the result speaks for itself. “It was good, as you saw, everyone played hard,” Standhardinger said. “Like I said, when we go hard, it’s hard to stop us. But we do have to go hard everytime andd we have to adjust and sacrifice for the team,” he added.   — Follow this writer on Twitter, @paullintag8.....»»

La Salle still spotless in Philippine Baseball League

Coming off an 11-8 win over IPPC a day ago, the De La Salle Green Batters heated up at the right time before romping the UP Fighting Maroons in just seven innings, 18-8, last Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium. With the win, the Green Batters are just one win away from an elimination round sweep in the Philippine Baseball League. In addition, La Salle clinched the top seed in the semifinals. But for long-time La Salle head coach Joseph Orillana, he was just glad as the Green Batters stepped up after reigning UAAP Athlete of the Year Kiko Gesmundo suffered a shoulder injury. "Masaya ako para sa team. Sabi ko sa kanila, kahit wala si Kiko, kailangan nila mag-step up. Hindi naman puwede na aasa lang kami sa seniors. Kanila na ito e," said Orillana as Gesmundo's first inning dive resulted to a shoulder sprain. The Fighting Maroons, who are coming off their first win of the season last Saturday, were able to keep pace with the league-leaders -- even picking up a 5-4 lead in the fifth inning. Errors, though, plagued UP at the bottom end of the inning while a 2-RBI single by left baseman Paolo Casas served as the go-ahead run. It did not stop there as the Green Batters, who were already up 11-8 entering the seventh inning, punch in seven more runs - capped by Mark Tuballas' errand pitch that hit Diego Lozano with the bases loaded that resulted to the walk-off stoppage. Tuwi Park was once again spectacular for La Salle, going 3-of-4 at-bat with five RBIs. Anton Acuna and Casas had three and two RBIs, respectively. Graduating infielder Boo Borandiaran earned the win for La Salle, pitching the last two innings -- fanning two batters. "Hopefully, sa UAAP magamit namin siya as pitcher," said Orillana as Barandiaran rarely pitched after his sophomore year. "Pinag-fofocus namin siya sa second [base], may times this season na magiging reliever siya. Hindi namin siya binibigla kasi galing siya sa injury." Earlier in the day, the Ateneo Blue Eagles snapped their two-game skid after escaping the UST Golden Sox, 13-12. Gino Tantuico connected on the first home run of the tournament during the first inning. In the last game of the triple-header, the Adamson Soaring Falcons kept their semis hopes alive after blasting the NU Bulldogs in seven innings, 19-3. Adamson will have to await the results of the games on Saturday, January 26 to see if it makes the Final Four......»»

FIBA WC: Jawo stresses teamwork for Gilas to advance

Former senator and Philippine national team mainstay Robert 'Sonny' Jaworski says that he would like to see Gilas Pilipinas achieve greater things through teamwork in the sixth window of the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifiers this February. Sporting a 5-5 record, Gilas will have to work hard against Qatar and Kazakhstan, both road games that will ultimately decide whether the national team will advance into the next round of basketball's biggest international competition or not.  Jaworski, who was watching the Ginebra-San Miguel tussle at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum Sunday evening, stated the obvious by calling the next two games critical, but did impart a valuable lesson for coach Yeng Guiao's boys. "Sayang naman. So, we got to bring a lot of things together. And most importantly, yung maasahan ko yung kasama ko. Maaasahan ko yung kakampi ko, yun lang," the 72-year old shared. "The team spirit is very important. Learn as much as possible the good and the bad habits of each other, yun ang importante," he added. Now talking about the game, seeing his former team getting pummeled by the Beermen early on, Jaworski credited a familiar source of energy -- the sixth man -- as the one that helped the Gin Kings trim a 21-point lead to as low as five in the dying seconds of the game. "There were a lot of miscues. That's how the game rolls. Basta ang importante, the game got closer towards the end and I think the crowd made it that." When asked about coach Ginebra mentor Tim Cone's team struggles in the Philippine Cup, Jaworski magnified a key strategy in order to help the team get the wins in the league's most prestigious tourney. "Well, understand that the waterboy is important, so don't just rely on the import, you know? The waterboy is important and so are the other players. Get the pride going through. We cannot just rely on an import." __   Follow this writer on Twitter, @philipptionary. .....»»

PBA: We had to weather the storm -- Lassiter

No lead is safe when you’re against Barangay Ginebra. The Gin Kings almost made San Miguel Beer pay Sunday at the Big Dome. Good thing, Marcio Lassiter was ready to play the firefighter's role in the Beermen's 99-91 escape over Ginebra to barge in the 2019 PBA Philippine Cup win column. SMB squandered a 23-point lead late in the third quarter and watched as the Gin Kings cut their deficit to 89-94 with 1:29 left in the game after LA Tenorio’s trey in Ginebra’s 17-5 scoring spurt. Then Lassiter came to the rescue for the Beermen. The SMB guard nailed a corner three to stop the Gin Kings at their track with 1:15 left. “I’m just lucky that on that play we just kept sharing the ball. So the ball found me on the corner and I was able to knock down,” said Lassiter. “That’s what we want, to keep sharing the ball and regardless of how, you know, we might miss some few shots but we kept sharing it good things happen.” Lassiter finished with 16 points with 4-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc. SMB went up 76-53 with 1:40 remaining in the third period off a three by Von Pessumal. The Beermen entered the payoff period with a comfortable 78-57 advantage. Or so they thought. “I felt like, we had a big lead originally, and we just need to keep our composure. Basketball is a game of runs so they made their run in the end. I give credit to them,” said Lassiter. “Ginebra’s a good team. You can’t discredit them. I give credit to them but we had to weather the storm and put some key stops and some key buckets in to get the win,” he added. The Beermen captured their first win in two games and pulled the Gin Kings down to 1-1.   --- Follow this writer on Twitter, @fromtheriles.....»»

Hamstring injury sidelines San Miguel’s Alex Cabagnot

MANILA, Philippines---San Miguel point guard Alex Cabagnot is out indefinitely after suffering a hamstring injury in the Beermen's previous game in the PBA Philippine Cup against Columbian. Cabagnot said on Sunday that his left hamstring has been bothering him for a couple of weeks and it only got worse in the Beermen's 124-118 loss to the Dyip on Friday. "I hurt my hamstring last game when I dove on the floor but we were trying to catch up so you have to try anything to win the game," said Cabagnot after the Beermen's recent 99-91 win over Barangay Ginebra at Smart Araneta Coliseum. "Whatever happens I just did what I had to do and the worst consequence was I hurt my hamstring ...Keep on reading: Hamstring injury sidelines San Miguel’s Alex Cabagnot.....»»
